outlaws update part 2

OUTLAW UPDATE PART 2

And when I say the outlaws have absolutely no concept of how to plan for the future, I’m not just exaggerating to be funny.  For instance, you know you need propane to cook with every day ( I won’t even get into the fiasco with the heating propane ).  It is a given.  You need X amount of coffee perked up and Y amount of meals to be cooked and it uses Z amount of propane.  The answer is, How Many Propane Bottles Do I Need To Buy When My Obammy Check Come In The First Of The Month.  Not for these morons.  The answer to them seems to be, Why Are We Out Of Fuel Again?  Which I know is a question rather than an answer, but that is how convoluted the outlaws are.  Oh, gee, we are out of cigarettes again.  Ya Think?  How could that have happened?  Ahhh, duh, we are out of diapers again.  The Humanity!  Who would of thunk it?  They run out of Food Stamps THE FIRST FRIGGIN WEEK OF THE MONTH!!!!! Now, the simple answer is these evolutionary dead ends are either smoking crack or gambling it all away.  Or both.  A little bit is that the step daughter really just takes after her mother.  Both refuse to acknowledge the future ( “you can’t enjoy today if you are worrying about tomorrow” ).  This might just be genetic.  But there is vital difference.  Mom let me take care of the future ( although her indifference to it was the reason we broke up ).  Daughter is such an ex-wife clone, living a life of total perceived independence of men ( while happily suckling off the government teet ) that she only attracts the kind of meek castrated male that follows her every dictate.  She doesn’t get anyone to help her because she refuses to believe she is ever wrong about anything.  Both are firmly stuck in the present.

*

Now, this is actually going somewhere.  My point is that this kind of lifestyle involves nothing other than perpetual crisis, a lurching between extra rapid consumed luxuries followed by prolonged shortages of essentials.  They were living this way on grid.  The rent doesn’t get paid, so they are homeless.  The diapers run out so there is a six hour convoluted bus trip to shelters and food banks and churches to get a few as the children leek of day old urine.  The electricity gets turned off.  The kids go without eating a day at a time while mom sees who she can scam out of money while playing “the kid card”.  Which then PARTIALLY goes to food but is otherwise wasted and the cycle starts anew.  They are living the exact same lifestyle here off grid.  All the lights are left on during overcast, no thought given to discharging the battery.  Nothing is pre-bought while visiting town so sometimes there are three trips, wearing out the car and using more gasoline.  They don’t take water bottles every trip, letting it get to the point of running out and requiring yet another trip into town.  Instead of investing in a large tank hose for propane, they keep using disposable bottles.  They cant grasp that a one time expense of $30 saves ten bucks a month, forever.

*

Any moron can move into your home off grid.  They will then consume YEARS worth of investments in weeks for no good reason other than ignorance and laziness.  Beware your outlaws.  To them, no matter how much they pretend to hate the idea of composting toilets or wood stoves or no TV, you are just another source of free everything.

  1. always meant to ask your wonderfully locked head,as you live in an RV,do you use any of the built in appliances? Gas stove, furnace, toilet, water tank?

    1. No. Except for the lights. I don't trust thirty year old propane lines and I don't waste power pumping water when I can use gravity. As long as a trailer doesn't leak, has wiring to the lights, I can improvise everything else. Also, always remember and never forget, I live in the B-POD now. Trailer is just for sitting in the sun to avoid cabin fever.

    1. Not sure your question. My ex-wife is upstairs living with her child, my step-daughter, and the grandkids. Her boyfriend is there also.

    2. oh,I thought all of you lived in the rabbit hole, sorry.Anyway, did you remove the unused appliances for storage? The fridge could be used as an ice box,if you had ice.I'd be ok with 30 yr old gas lines, the water lines would be questionable tho.I'd rather fix the stove and oven, rather than rely on a space heater and a hotplate, whatever you use to cook. And it would give some heat in the winter, makes the gruel go down a bit easier!

    3. In Florida, I'd need an icebox or fridge. Here, I can get away with old school preservation tech's ( condiments, fermintation ) holding up well. Butter stays for weeks, etc. I'm actually thinking of tearing out the old oven and using it as we're now having terrible luck with camping stoves. DON'T buy Wal-Mart units anymore. First one last five years. Last two only five months each. This one from K-Mart is only marginally better.

  4. Reminds me of a post years ago on another blog. Rational couple with deep pantry has kids and grandkids move in ("temporarily"). Pantry is literally a walk-in closet. After a few weeks, couple wisely puts lock on pantry door. Food will be prepared by said couple at meal times. The food was being consumed at an unimaginable rate, and likely some of it was being sold on the side. I always took it as the real reason I stash some of my food in not-so-obvious location- not hiding it from the Golden Horde or gubberment confiscation, I'm hiding it from the people I know who have poor judgment.

Planning and building in some margin for error is not genetic. It is something people can be taught, sometimes the easy way and sometimes the hard way. I've read that there is a great deal of variability in moving into basic, "adult-like" planning for the future. Some kids can learn to do it well before their teen years. A lot of people get there in their early adult years, others make it by the time their about 30. Some never quite get there.

  5. Interesting observations. I had a down-on-their-luck friend move in with us once. Even with the smorgasbord of debt free homestead living placed before her, she could not give up the drama of living on the edge. Whether it was money, boyfriends, drugs, alcohol, etc, there was ALWAYS drama at least once a day. I figure it must just be hard wired into folks.

Regarding the outlaws -- The first thing I come away with is that even though they have had to move to Bison Paradise, they obviously haven't hit rock bottom. Or they don't realize that this is there chance to start anew and learn cheap living from the best.

Have they done ANY modifications to their lifestyle I.e. Cheaper food at the end of the month, less showers, toilet, raising of the kids, or are they trying to keep up with town living? For example, are they trying to haul in 50 gallons of water a day or have they reduced their usage? How is there attitude about living a primative lifestyle?

Second, if social services and modern day safety nets were not around, would they roll your murdered body out of the pit and eat your wheat and food storage or would they just leave for greener pastures? I'm trying to discern if city folk even consider basic food storage as REAL food.

In a SHTF scenario, would they evolve from locusts into minions? Any hope for the children to be useful if the parents were out of the picture? Or is it a total loss and you would be better turning them away as soon as they arrive after Armageddon and not give them a grain of wheat?

This is a good thing for your minions to learn -- be soft hearted and let 'questionable' family in or to turn them away with nothing and not let them even darken your doorstep. Thank you for sacrificing so that you could run this test and advise us on the proper way to deal with family after the collapse.

    1. They are incapable of learning. Period. No question. I'm still grappling as to what to do come crunch time. My advice is to harden your heart and not let them in. Or you WILL have an interesting tactical situation on your hands. Not sure how they view the wheat. I didn't get a "won't eat that", but I also doubt they were listening in the first place.

    2. I'm kind of a softy so I hate to say it, but that is probably good advice.

I'm hoping that being so far off the beaten path will lessen the number of hard choices I have to make

    3. I guess one way to look at it is "those people" are guilty to begin with, just for forcing us to have to make those choices to begin with.

  6. I inspire my relatives. My niece was so afraid that she'd have to move in with her crazy uncle and aunt that she found a way to pay for an apartment in town. She has no interest in the rural off-grid lifestyle.

I pity you the problem. It is indeed a foreshadow of the future.
I see the biggest hurdle is getting between now and WROL conditions. At that point then whatever happens amounts to who weilds the biggest stick and or vacates himself to the sticks...

    3. I've thought of moving, or forcing them out ( at this point, they are only there as a favor to the ex for her many years of faithful...something ) but I'm also thinking it best to "keep your enemies closer"

    4. Years ago I let my wife's good friend and daughter move it. After nine months my wife was trying to strangle her "friend." Really. Hands around the throat and everything.

The best thing that came from the experience is that we are careful who we let in. Oh yes, my wife and her friend are on good terms again, but she'll never move in with us again.

One of my good friends will probably loose his house. I'd let him in, but his wife comes with too much drama attached.

Being off grid and having no "real" fridge or cell phone signal, or TV helps keep folks from moving in. However, if folks are desperate enough to crash at your place, no one is safe.

    5. The only problem is that you are the odd man out. Not much you can do about it. It's just the way it is. Better that it happened now while you still have some options.

      Hope you have a Plan B, C and D.

There's always North Idaho :) Though, it's not very bike friendly in the winter.

  7. Sometimes people think that such behaviour is engineered, but all it takes for some people is to *gently push* natural tendencies in the wrong direction, and very rapidly you have a whole chunk of the population living in misery.

It is similar to the infamous nuclear chain reaction : three of these guys can ruin you down to their level, and then you become one of them, and you also drag people down all around you, especially your own family, because you too want to stay afloat / alive.

In a truly right-wing, dog-eat-dog world, sorry I meant Libertarian (lol), these guys would of course starve to death in no time. Except libertarians are just as retarded as Liberals, Tea Party and the other brands out there. The world is run by people like the Albrecht brothers ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldi ) , the richest individuals in Germany, one of the richest countries on the surface of the globe. They became so rich in running a chain of discount stores, Aldi, which target specifically the guys you're talking about.

If there is a reason why these "outlaws" are around in such numbers, it is because they have tremendous value for a very limited number of powerful people.

These people are simply not well educated ; they're the most common humans living in complex societies ; tribal societies are much more demanding from their members, but also provide better education, as limited as it might seem to us on the technological level. "Common sense" is common in tribal societies but not in complex societies.

Since they're INEVITABLE in our society, some people speculated on the predictability of their behaviour. It is less understood than analysed : there lies the power of statistics, Data Mining etc. The Albrecht brothers understand them far less than you do, but they understand maths, and these outlaws are as predictable as insects that run following an algorithm.

We, the peopel who anticipate and make things run with spit and bailing wire, we are the reason guys like the Albrecht people can get away with it : society STILL works, in spite of all their parasitism, and this all thanks to us.

This is why those who really saw the big picture are following what is described in the Peter's Principle ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter%27s_Principle ) : they cultivate a position where they can't be of much help, where they still have time and ressources to do their own thing.

Inevitably, complex societies collapse. We are also specualting, within our modest means (chiefly : lifetime and skill), for a somewhat better future.
