what is post-apocalypse

WHAT IS POST-APOCALYPSE

The definition of Post-Apocalypse anymore seems to be a mere label useful for advertising.  When Logan’s Run, a dystopian fiction piece, is labeled as post-apocalypse, we all nod and grin and remember the big busted big haired Fara Facitt ( I know, spelling ).  Okay, so they all went underground after a nuclear war or whatever it is.   Today, their society looks like a middle class shopping mall.  Full of beautiful people.  No one is starving, crime is reasonable if not nonexistent ( I haven’t seen the movie since it first came out on video ).  Society is normal.  How is this then considered post-apocalypse?  The Disney movie Wall-E claimed to be post-apocalypse, just because the planet blew up and they went elsewhere.  To a functioning environment.  To my mind, post-apocalypse isn’t just about events after a major cataclysm, not if society has recovered and is fully functional.  To me, post-apocalypse is the struggle to get to a functioning society again.  Once you get there, that ain’t post-apocalypse any more but science fiction ( although, of course, post-apocalypse is a sub-genre of science fiction.  In this case it slips from its sub-genre classification back to the parent genre ).  I know I’m splitting hairs here, but I also feel it is necessary because without doing so there is a lot of cheating taking a customers money under false pretext.  Just like when the book store and the library lump fantasy in with science fiction.  They ain’t the same thing.  At all.  They are as far apart as Romance and Men’s Military Adventure.

*

Is there a governing body that stays in power through policing rather than military conflict?  Is there trade established with other organizational entities?  Is there a surplus of resources to allow trade?  Do citizens spend more time working at a trade than fighting to get enough to eat?  Well then, you are not in a post-apocalypse world.  You might be in an alternate world, sci-fi wise.  But you are no longer surviving a die-off.  And that would be, surviving a die-off whilst under no government protection ( natural disasters, crop failure famines and the like are not post-apocalypse.  They are regular life before and after petroleum in the First World ).  As much as the anarchist in me cringes, almost no human society as ever successfully functioned without some level of governance ( which requires force to survive ).  The lack of governance is a key factor in post-apocalypse stories, because without it you can’t have safety to grow food and you can’t safely trade food for other necessities.  Once stable government is established, and crops are grown, and trade is possible, you are technically still in a period AFTER the Apocalypse but you are no longer IN an Apocalypse.  So while the label of “post-apocalypse” is technically correct, it is a lawyer weasel word ( what is the definition of IS? ).  I don’t expect most to agree with me, nor this to change a damn thing.  But perhaps it will go a ways to explaining those times when I casually dismiss any book or movie as “NOT post-apocalypse”.

tradition 2

TRADITION 2

No matter how they’ve been vilified, all traditions are grounded in group advancement ( yes, at the sacrifice to individual preferences.  Yet, long term, even those individuals receive more help than harm in relative terms ) and in practical realities.  Traditions which apparently oppress a minority to the enrichment of others are in fact trying to achieve harmonious relations, not achieve a monopoly to enrich one over another ( just laws follow tradition and are thus abided by.  Unjust laws ignore traditional goals while following the outline in the advancement of some over others ).  I’ve used the example of slavery before.  FedGov types who benefit from the fragmentation of cohesive social groups which might pose a challenge to its hegemony paint the South as a bunch of bigots who whipped slaves on a whim and bedded every available female.  Completely ignoring the fact that Black Africans enslaved fellow blacks in the interior then took them to the coast to sell to Whites, usually on a Yankee owned vessel, who profited off the exchange to Southerners who sold their commodities profitably to Northerners and the English ( who gladly took cheap agricultural products whilst playing aghast at the institution which supplied the labor ) which had to be cheap since the factories and banks not controlled by the South insisted on it.  Slavery was only outlawed once it imposed a threat to very expensive industrial investment, and was a reliable institution throughout every civilization and time.  Why?  Partially it was since it provided such cheap labor force ( not having to feed a potential slave through childhood was a vast savings indeed ), but partially it was traditional.  Because a slave is an ex-soldier not killed or an ex-enemy civilian not left to die of starvation.  The model the South presented in Industrial times was not traditional but rather a hybrid of tradition perverted for industrial advantage.

*

Marriage for life is decried as slavery for women, a prison for those beaten and abused.  But traditionally it was an arrangement that allowed for continuity of care for both spouses and the children.  It was as much a trap for men as women, if it was a bad bond.  Yes, females might suffer physically, although that was a stereotype most likely not widespread as the male viewpoint usually doesn’t condone that and hence there would have been some social pressure against an abusive husband, not to mention that a reputation as a beater would not avail a man looking for another wife after the first died in childbirth or from disease, regardless of wealth or standing.  But males were beholden to care for a family financially for life, a joy in a good union but hell in a bad one.  If a wife got pregnant by another man, the husband still had to support it- a basis for a lot of traditional suppression of women’s “rights”.  A husband cheating produced no financial hardship on a wife, whereas a wife’s cheating cost a husband two decades of unjustifiable support.

*

Apprenticeships are now sold as child slavery, but not only is that pretty silly ( you are paid in schooling ), it was a tradition that made a lot of sense.  An apprentice didn’t have to pay for school, so being poor wasn’t a handicap for an education ( in contrast to today where being poor means you pay for a career with a lifetime of debt ).  And getting cheap help ( just room and board ) meant a very small business was able to get started and thrive ( as opposed to today where minimum wage laws and etc. assure only the big companies thrive and little ones either crash and burn or assume high lifetime debt- anyone seeing a trend here? ).  It was a win-win with the only losers big government, big corporations and big banks.  Religion has now been sold as a parasitic tradition, but as much as an organized religion profited off a monopoly, there were still benefits in the form of social cohesion.  Yes, enforced conformity.  Just like all customs and tradition.  But cohesion is conformity in good times and survival in bad.

tradition 1

IN DEFENSE OF TRADITION

In American culture tradition is a dirty and befouled word.  You know, because traditionally men oppressed women and white folk oppressed minorities and companies oppressed individuals so only government was able to help the proletariat but since traditionally oppressive white folk kept the government small to starve out the peasants, bigger government was cool because it wasn’t traditional and it only wanted to help ( but kindly don’t mention that a private banking cartel traditionally controlled the government through monetary means and traditionally raped the masses through inflation ).  Tradition is spat upon and actively taught against in all our traditional ( near a century now ) propaganda methods including compulsory education, media and progressive laws.  If anything is traditionally supported, it is vilified and not allowed in polite society, whereas anything at all to include sodomy and bestiality and pre-school sex education and allowing the deadly diseased to wander about freely whilst working in food preparation services to harvesting Asian babies which was traditionally unacceptable is pushed and condoned  and apologized for.  Only in small isolated close knit societies are traditions followed and only at the expense of largely cordoning off the rest of the society surrounding them in defense ( hence the seemingly silly practices of condoning rock and roll music or disallowing dances, etc. )( the Mammon Church largely is incapable of cordoning off most of its settlements to outsider influx and suffers accordingly although to a degree it is successful ).

*

Tradition is nothing more than a cultural adaptation of best practices available for the resource base at hand.  Yes, there were parasitic organisms that exploit traditions when possible.  Mankind has forever been and will forever be full of selfish behaviors.  That is a survival mechanism.  Culture and tradition can minimize these, it can never stop them.  An unsocial behavior is an aberration which is fought against but is also the least possible “tax” that must be paid.  For every tradition there is abuse and misuse but the end result of a lack of tradition is lack of social cohesion.  Lack of social cohesion spells out individual disaster during disaster.  As one example, during a drought ( if you think those are just biblical disasters because Oil Fracking will make us energy independent for a gabazillion  years, your head is so far up your ass you should be the worlds leading ventriloquist ) a society with three generational households, tribal affiliations and reciprocal village trade structures will all suffer to some degree but most will weather the crisis.  On the other hand, societies with strong capitalistic tendencies and rampant individualism will gladly throw whole regions under the bus in a brutish dog eat dog free for all, down to the family level where the old and infirm are gladly allowed to die so as others may live ( this discounts traditional societies in harsh environments where such practices are traditional as a means of community survival ).  Next post, concrete examples of traditions which actually help even though vilified today.

e-shaver

E-SHAVER
Now, don't get your panties in a bunch.  I am today not adding a frivolous electronic gadget to your Must Have For The Apocalypse list, but just discussing it as a nice addition if you can acquire one for a very specific circumstance.  I don't have much use for electronic shavers ( perhaps my long suffering minions recount the 1980's Braun shaver incident in which a supposedly high quality electric razor came alive Stephen King style and tried to cut my throat ), but neither do I care to grow a beard as every attempt not only caused skin problems and detracted from my shining dome, it looked silly as well as soon as I started to gray with age.  The problem with e-shavers is that they are obscenely priced for what you are getting, they hurt like hell to use ( unless you use one of those oh so flippin La De Da fancy wet razors that cost even more ) and they are far from adequate leaving a not very satisfying cut ( again, unless you put big bucks towards them ).  Yet, for a water scarce situation they are so much better.  Here in the less than wet high desert where it is sunny all year except friggin winter when it would really be friggin nice to have a friggin sunny day every friggin once in a friggin while so I don't have to stay down in my friggin hole all day and I could also perhaps get a little friggin extra writing done, using solar power to shave is much better than wasting water.
*
But, more importantly, when we all go to ground at the commencement of hostilities come the die-off, sheltering in secrecy might call for disciplining your water use.  If you grow a beard to save water, you waste more water keeping it clean than if you had used water to shave ( shave using almost no water by softening your skin with a hot damp clothe rather than splashing hot water on your face ).  And a beard is not going to make it easier to stay clean and fresh.  You want little facial hair and little hair atop your dome to save on water.  And your gal would really appreciate it if you gave most of your allotted cleaning water to her.  An electric razor can go far on saving water, even if you were only shaving three times a week, and even if you were using a minimum for that.  It is NOT a long term shaving solution.  For that you buy the Shavr Savr at Lehman's Amish mail order store for $15, then take a guess how long you have left to live and times those years by a dollar.  Thirty years to go? $30 in $1 a pack, ten to the pack, disposable razors.  Three times a week, shaving WITH the grain, a razor lasts about two months.  Ten razors a year, max ( I know, straight razors.  I prefer the cheaper and safer disposables ).  But an e-razor saves water as long as it lasts.  One trick I've never seen elsewhere to really downgrade the amount of pain you need to put up with in an e-razor is to shave twice.  The first time do not put any pressure at all on the razor.  Just let it gently glide.  Clean, then do it again really grinding it into your face.  It doesn't hurt as much, and it takes longer to get that five o'clock shadow.

dr. dolittle

DR. DOOLITTLE

As we get started, let me try to make my position perfectly clear.  I respect the hell out of a lot of professions.  Volunteer firefighters are willing to risk their lives to save puppies, small children and past their prime oxygen wasting geriatrics   trapped by fires, all equally.  A lot of cops disappoint me, but far more are righteous guys who still embrace a peace officer rather than a LEO attitude, yet are scarcely rewarded and are pressured from all sides by ingrates.  And will still try to put their lives between you and danger.  Almost every single doctor is dedicated and has sacrificed a lot to try to save lives, and their shortcomings are usually caused by the legions of parasites attached to them making them far less efficient than they should be ( you fight the for profit hospital board, the malpractice insurance agent, the AMA, the federal regulator, give them all a cut of your spoils, then work sixteen hours a day and see if some of your customer care doesn’t get cut from an optimal level ).  Now, having said that, these people are going to be next to useless to you after the Apocalypse.  I get why the political larvae want us to worship the First Responders ( remember my temper tantrum about some douche bag wanting to include them in Veterans Day celebrations? ).  Uniform Respect is a cultural trait big brother loves.  But my respect is for those you serve other citizens, not those who serve the government.  And don’t let yourself fall into a hero worship trap.  For all the good these folks do now, don’t believe it will carry over well.

*

It’s already been discussed how doctors are going to be severely hamstrung by lack of Just-In-Time inventory medicines.   About how ambulances won’t be able to get its charges to the needed care.  How cops can’t patrol or communicate.  But it goes deeper than that.  First Responders have been indoctrinated and trained, highly trained no doubt, in only one environment.  The JIT inventory, the fuel dependent transportation, the Internet.  We are awed by their skill set, and think even in moments of privation they can still do something, anything, mere civilians cannot.  I disagree.  Take a basic example.  With budget cuts and resource shortages, ammunition became hard for some department to procure.  Training was suspended, yet without training on a regular basis, how much better is a patrolman going to be in a firefight, other things being equal such as stress response, than his adversary?  How much more danger are bystanders in?  If New York Cities Finest are any example ( the case recently with heavy civilian casualties with minimal damage on the criminals ), a lot.  And that is just one of the smallest examples of modern Oil Age techniques and training and equipment not being optimal.  Ignore every post-apocalypse fictional plot line of yearning for professionals in a group, and rationally think through how much their skills are really going to help.  Or hurt.

krampos delivers bran

KRAMPOS DELIVERS BRAN

Rob, you wonderful minion SOB-excellent care package!  Most pleasantly shocked!  Happy Festivus!
*
Krampos ( spelling? ) is the German folk tale character who is the real, evil Santa Claus.  The good kids get gold coins, the slightly bad get whipped and the worse get taken away to get eaten.  I love that evil bastard, so much more of a believable motivator for good behavior than the made up to cash in commercially Santa.  In fact, Santa can take all his presents and reindeer, roll them up into a little ball and shove them up his ass.  God bless us, everyone, but I hate and despise Christmas.  Yes, we are all materialistic, greedy and consumer driven.  363 days out of the year.  Do we really need ANOTHER day to celebrate that?  One that tries to outdo the rest of the year combined?  And yes, I did enjoy the day for the kids, when they were young.  But even then, I was deluding myself.  I was helping to train mindless consuming drones in my image, and lied to myself that it was a magical time for them.  Sure, the first time they were cognizant of it.  After that, it was unrealistic expectations all year, to the point they couldn’t possibly be happy about the less than perfect reality.  We don’t get that crap enough as adults?  We have to pass that poison on to our kids?

*

Look at how we seek Christmas miracles in all things in our lives.  Marriage is never perfect because it is sold as a picture book romance rather than a partnership greater than the sum of its parts as long as both people take responsibilities.  In reality, our society loathes responsibility and to avoid it uses the lack of romance as an excuse to end the relationship ( if I ever hear “I love you but I’m not IN love with you” I don’t know if I can be held responsible for my actions ).  Look how we seek happiness at our job, thinking it confers nobility, purpose and social status.  Dude, we are all prostitutes.  A better paid whore just means they don’t die from a disease as soon as the corner walkers.  Look how we have ever increasing expectations, yesterdays luxuries now necessities, ever newer luxury always being sought, just as a child at Christmas always wanting and needing newer and better and more.  My only bright spot this Christmas was the blind corporate adherence to policy produced a funny as Hell aside.  The Food Bank receives a yearly food donation from a well-to-do grocery store ( Rally’s/Bell-Aire/Nob Hill ).  The customers there spend $10 to donate to us a $20 bag of groceries, the store making up the difference.  At the end of the Christmas season we get pallet after pallet of cases of canned and dry goods ( and a few at the beginning of December ).  Rice, pasta sauce, tuna, etc.  Well, a short time ago, it was decided that rather than making all that last all year long as we had been doing, all those items were going to be put in a Christmas food box and given to our clients.  It isn’t just to the homeless any more, but mainly to low income families.  It was kind of retarded, giving spaghetti sauce for Christmas dinner, but nobody ever asks me, being a testicle wearer and all ( all the bosses are women ).  There was still plenty left over to last the next year, but it was just a huge waste of time and an embarrassment.  Well, this year we got boxes of cereal, so that was included in the Christmas Dinner Box.  Bran pellet cereal.  The nastiest, foulest breakfast concoction ever.  Krampos would be proud of that Christmas punishment.

this is only a test

THIS IS ONLY A TEST

Well, that was an “interesting” week ( in the Chinese curse sense ).  After me and the immediate boss ( not the boss of the whole shebang ) blew up at each other, something I shan’t get into, the next morning when I come in I’m “offered” half time.  I don’t know if this was actually voluntary, to help me with my stress level, or if it was going to be mandatory, but I snatched up the offer without any questions.  I don’t know if this decision was offered in sympathy or spite.  It doesn’t matter.  For far too long things at work have gotten more and more stressful, the typical management expectations of more and more far past the actual point it is physically possible.  Every last one of you who has ever worked for a corporate structure knows exactly what I’m talking about.  Since they only understand the Growth Uber Alles paradigm, it is frankly inconceivable to them that worker peasants can’t continue to outperform their past achievements every record cycle ( this is one of the reasons I loved Shindler’s List, for the scene where the commander times a Jewish slaves assigned task then shoots him for having not performed at that splendid time every time.  I don’t think Spielberg meant it as a corporate riff, but it perfectly encapsulates the entire mentality ).  These are the people in charge, so you can kind of understand why we’ve increased speed as we hurled over the Gore Warming cliff.

*

I should have requested half time years ago.  It would have saved me quite the bit of stress.  Now that it was presented to me as a done deal ( or, to sound cooler in French, fait accompli ) I can go with it easier though.  It has been ten years of working at a minimum 60 hours a week- not including commute time.  Granted, for ten of those ( and many prior to that ) it mostly all went to the ex-wife.  But afterwards, wanting to finally enjoy the fruits of my own labor, I was not willing to give up any money or hours and kept up the grinding pace.  Now, as soon as I learn how to relax again ( something I haven’t seemed to be able to really accomplish since about 1990 ) I can enjoy a life with much less stress.  If I can relax.  My afternoon hours were given to another new worker, and while he doesn’t seem like he could take my place in the morning, you never know.  The sub-boss might really have it in for me and I can’t tell because, you know, guile and sneakiness being a gal thing, us guys usually have no clue when we are being played by the opposite sex ( like the last wife.  I don’t know at what point I crossed her line in the sand, but obviously I did some time ago.  It seems she’s been screwing with me for some time.  Still haven’t heard from her.  Oh, well, I just miss the sex, not the drama ).  So, I’m living frugal once again and saving money, just in case.  No money worries at all.  Not even at half pay.  I invested quite a bit into consumables and preps the last two years, so I’m golden.  Weird how everything I plan for turns out working in unexpected ways.  But always to my benefit.  I can live on $300 a month and save the rest and still be flexible and comfortable.  It will be a good test for a real emergency.  Again.

flea bites 2

FLEA BITES 2

Before we start today-  W.W., thanks for the care package.  Funny, and useful and appreciated.  Also, whoever sent the book "One Summer", it looks real interesting.  Thanks!  It's good to have minions at Christmas.
*
When people say “once a government agency is born, it never dies”, they are correct.  But that isn’t the reason we have had a growing national police force.  It was to control the population for the safety of the empire ( any cheese dingus douche bag that tows the party line “we are an accidental empire” or similar is an obvious whore on the government teet.  We were an empire from 1865, but even if you don’t buy that you can’t write off Hawaii, Cuba, Puerto Rico or the Philippines as anything other than imperial possessions ).  Prohibition was the excuse to institute one, as was making drugs illegal right after the end of that law.  Yes, making marijuana illegal worked out quick nicely for synthetic fiber manufactures who saw a superior natural product removed from the marketplace, but the Feds needed an excuse to continue to grow their police force.  All drugs were made illegal unless under the auspices of the pharmaceutical industry.  Again, just because a corporation or industry benefited doesn’t make them the father of a law, just the beneficiary by luck, accident or timing.  The prime reason was to shepherd in federal law enforcement growth.  It is one of the few reasons that explain the willingness to waste billions to enforce unenforceable laws.  The money was well spent, if it meant hundreds of billions and trillions to those in power.  The population was kept under control at nominal cost.

*

Remember, the communists were not chosen as a threat until after WWII.  From 1917 to 1941, our government needed to control the population while it grew enormously.  Alcohol prohibition, then drug control and “job creation” in a Depression caused by the bankers kept the federal police in power and growing.  Then a total wartime economy ( most potential trouble makers were drafted, so a little breathing space there ).  After the war, we needed an enemy to blame for suppressing our population, so a few patsies were chosen to give the Soviets nuclear technology.  I don’t believe for a second they stole the tech, discovered the tech or got it from the Germans.  We gave it to them to create an external enemy to control the home population.  Russians aren’t the nicest folks, but by and large they were the victims of our ambitions rather than the visa versa propaganda.  Now, by controlling our population, I mean several things.  Laws were there to punish who we chose, but it was also about the bait and switch of making folks happy to be suppressed by the home team because of an outside threat.  And that threat was used as an excuse for the suppression in the first place.  OOOOh, scary Red Menace there!  Who cares about a little inflation to fund the army, or a few exceptions to your rights, etc.  So, what happened when the Soviet Union imploded?  Instead of shopping around for a new external enemy, we just turned on our own people in a naked attempt at cowing dissent.  No more fakery.  Then, for whatever reason, we reverted back to form ten years later and created a Muhammad boogeyman.  But the lessons remained.  Don’t you dare question authority, or step out of line.  Remember what happened in the 90’s, and add in a new threat of waterboarding, rendition and drone assassination.  Just look at all those plastic carbine 3% pussies who won’t revolt.

FLEA BITES

The question which has bothered me for some time was why did the velvet glove come off of the iron fist in the 90’s.  Why suddenly were mothers holding infants snipered and small children in Texas being BBQed by FedGov storm troopers?  Heck, the 90’s were a time of balanced budgets and extremely low oil prices.  There should have been zero sedation or discontent with unemployment so low anyone with a pulse wanting to work was actually treasured.  The Wal-Mart “miracle” was in full swing.  Nobody had to work very hard to eat like a king for cheap and wallow in a sea of plastic doo-dads ( and, electronics were falling in price and ballooning in performance every six months ).   No one had a reason to complain too seriously, so why did Slick Willy sow hate and discontent?  He wasn’t bored, having his choice of young gals to service his needs under the Oval office desk.  My thinking is pointing to a repeat of Prohibition growing Flea’s ( Federal Law Enforcement Agencies- the guy that came up with that one was a genius ) just as the KGB grew in the Soviet Union, with the Intelligence community morphing into another power group fighting for control.  And, no, I don’t believe necessarily this is an outgrowth of the Military Industrial Complex, a quaint notion on par with thinking this countries industrial base will return ( look at the parallels between our military equipment drawdown in the middle east and that of the disintegrating Soviet Union and tell me a weakening shrinking organization runs the shadow government ).

Back when Wilson bent over and invited the bankers to sodomize him and the Constitution ( yes, I know the Constitution is largely a step up from the Articles Of Confederation towards a more powerful federal government, so you can usually assume I’m shorthanding to infer the Bill Of Rights more than the Constitution.  So friggin sorry a daily 500 word forum doesn’t lend itself to minute over explanations in every aspect.  Besides, you’d get bored of even MORE repetition ), the financing of a worldwide empire was born.  It should have been a foregone conclusion at this point that citizens rights had to be considered secondary to the needs of power, profit and world building.  Imperial needs dictate an internal policing mechanism to keep the peace for itself.  How is the Empire to grow if troops are needed to quell internal uproar?  Soon after hundreds of thousands of American boys were slaughtered to keep the profits coming to JP Morgan, beneficiary of US loans to Britain and France,  we got our local KGB under the pretext of fighting rummies during Prohibition.  You think a bunch of sour old bitches who hadn’t had a good humping in too long all by themselves were able to “force” the government to prohibit the consumption of alcohol?  The explosion of spirit intake following the implementation of the law shows me the majority of people didn’t vote for lack of alcohol.  That prohibition law was as obviously faked on to the official books as was the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank.  Next post, continued.

A quick note to thank K.L. for the wonderfully thoughtful, not to mention expensive, gift package.  It came at a perfect time, the same day I was put on half time at work ( more on that in the near future ).  Also, I've finished making all the paper book versions I'm planning on doing for now, over at Lulu.com alongside my free e-books.  Link below
