water filter update

WATER FILTER UPDATE
Okay, extensive and profuse apologies to every swinging dingus minion out there.  I hang my head in shame.  The Berky filter gets crap for capacity.  I'm sorry I ever recommended them.  What you want is the Katadyn Drip Ceradyn Replacement Element
http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-20743-Ceradyn-Replacement-Element/dp/B0007U0116/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1399937026&sr=8-1&keywords=katadyn+drip+ceradyn+replacement+element
THAT is the one that gets 13,000 gallons ( and has silver inside so no mold growth ).

  1. This place has some filters. Looks like they are sold out now, but have had them in the past.

  2. Mold on berky filters? Mine go brown because of the iron in the water, but a scrub with a scotchbrite every 6 weeks or so and a soak in boiling water with bicarb in it sorts out the chlorine stink from them.

I've had these for what over 3 years, and they're still going strong. I have a spare set of filters and a brand spanking British Berkfield (That's what they call a "Berky" over here..) set up still in the box.

I also put in a capful of 35% peroxide once in a while (When I can be arsed) in the top half when it's full. I think "Berkys" are worth every penny.

    1. Setting aside others quality control issues, my main consideration here is how many gallons per dollar the unit delivers.

  3. A minion mentioned this link in an earlier comment but you may have missed it. The best article by far on water filters is over at Grandpappy Survival site.

Now granted, his hair is not even in the top 10 compared to yours. But you may want to look at his article anyways.

    1. I didn't even remember this myself :) I'm also partial now to the Sawyer. One or two Katadyn for the main, Sawyers for back-ups.
