GUN PORN BLATHERING
The Survivalist Blog just came out
with an article “rectifying the mistakes he made by listening to the supposed experts”. Yukon Mike was the author. Normally I would leave well enough alone
because guns are like your preference in women.
It suits you and you alone and you can talk until you are blue in the
face and that won’t change anyone else’s mind.
If you like big gals, you can explain how they are excellent heaters in
the winter and wonderful shade in the summer, but if your buddy likes anorexic
gals because they are cheaper to feed he is not going to be swayed by your
argument. Alas, I’m in a pretty pissy
mood today and I’m sure you need a break from the last week of lack of variety
in my articles, so I decided to dive right in.
Once again, as if by continually reciting the allegation you can make it
come true ( “there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home” “I must, I
must, I must increase my bust” “I am confident and forceful, I am confident and
sure” ) there was the “get a rimfire because the rounds are so cheap”. God, people!
Rimfire is an endangered artifact of the failing Industrial Age. I don’t care if you can, occasionally, get
your first cousin Ralf who works in the receiving dock at Wal-Mart to notify
you when two cases comes in and you can get there first and buy it at a
discount. That doesn’t count. The days of anyone, anytime, walking into any
gun shop and buying three cent round 22’s is over and gone forever.
*
It is the corpse of Peak Oil ( in our case
currently, $100 barrel oil which is not cheap under any definition ) and
Resource Depletion ( ores are running out AND those that remain are in small
enough concentrations that only a lot of fuel can extract them ). If fuel is dear, than so are ores. It is simple math. Just because at the start of the machine age
you could stumble over a boulder of pure copper doesn’t mean any of those are
left. When oil was $20, you could
extract the diffuse copper ore and fuel and transportation costs were negligible
and you could throw away brass cases and buy three cent replacements. That can’t happen with $100 oil. And, even at five times the old cost, eventually
brass will still run out. It is a finite
planet. To keep denying that, we kid
ourselves that other things like food and water won’t run out or be outbid from
us. And if that isn’t bad enough, he
thinks a 308 battle rifle in an AR platform is a good idea. For half that price, you could get a 762x54r new
semi auto. Wonder which one would jam on
you first? Wonder which one uses ammo
that cost three times the price? Just
because every swinging cheese dingus out there is using 308 doesn’t mean you
should. They aren’t going to barter you
for it ( so unless you are planning on stealing it… ) and every time there is a
shortage, that is the round that disappears.
If you have a problem with imported ammo, even changing the rifle is
still a better idea. At a cheaper price,
you can get an HK-91 type rifle. It is
far and away better than an AR for reliability.
Have AR fans ever actually been in the field with their rifle of choice?

Hopefully the rim fire fiasco will serve as a wake up call to the White Trash Irregulars in regards to cheap eats.
ReplyDeleteAfter a few news articles and a 60 Minutes story on the coming food shortage (due to climate change, drought, too many people, lack of oil, etc,) food will be flying off the shelf and we'll all be asking our mother's 2nd cousin who works stocking shelves at Wal Mart when the next Chef Boyardee shipment will be in.
Rice, wheat, beans, salt, sugar, flour, dried milk are still relatively cheap. Do yourself a favor and forgo this weekend's six pack and buy a bag of beans instead.

Here's hoping to a future where only the Irregulars survive. Is that mean?
DeleteNot too bad when you are pissy.
ReplyDeleteWhat can I do to keep you that way???

Don't worry, its kind of a 50/50 thing
DeleteHi Jim,
ReplyDeleteYukon Mike here, who wrote the article you refer to. I'm also a long time reader of yours all the way back to when you posted the Bison Newsletter and I even purchased three of your CD's. I even have you listed in the sidebar of my "Blog's I Follow" at www.livingprepared.blogspot.com for my readers to visit you and become enlightened. Now is that enough ego stroking for you today?
The article is my opinion of what feels right for me when it comes to my guns and what I did wrong. Hopefully someone will read it and save them from buying a gun that really isn't right for them.
I believe my choices make sense for me and I also have enough ammo to last me the rest of my life which since I'm pushing 70 that's maybe 10 more years. I do count myself lucky in that I had enough money and the time, 12 years it took me to accumulate a few task specific guns and cases of ammo to practice with. I like the AR platform and to be honest I have over 5,000 rounds through it and can't recall a jam or malfunction. I'm not a clean freak because I clean the AR and Glock about every 500 rounds and they just keep on working.
Mike Yukon
Glad you are a fan, I need them. Are you still one after the article? :) Sorry, but what I took from yours was a recommendation to others, not what works for you personally. If I was wrong on that, apologies. I'm sure an AR can cycle through a lot of ammo. What it doesn't do is put up with dirt when you are out in the field. And I do think the 308 AR
Delete's are stupid over-priced. Of course, I also understand what audience you were writing for and I'm sure they sopped it up like gravy. Peace.
I for one enjoyed last weeks articles. Any thoughts for a country where gun laws are prohibitive?

Can you get shotgun ammo? A slam-bang is still pretty much an improvement over a crossbow.
