battle rifle book 2

BATTLE RIFLE BOOK 2
COST MATTERS
*
note: free books.  Zombie YA https://amzn.to/2NYl1t5 .  Lord, apocalypse in diary form, female author https://amzn.to/2NZ7DVs .
*
I’ve always hated the tripe answer “what is your life worth?” when discussing the cost of firearms.  Because you are expected to answer “a gabazillion dollars” and then the matter of price is quickly dismissed.  Well, Mister Survivalist Studmuffin, if price is no object because you are most certainly worth it, why are you still living in the big city full of crime and Other Colors who despise your very existence and want to kill you?  Why aren’t you living way out in the country?
*
What’s that?  I can’t hear you over the bright beet red spectrum radiating from your face to such a degree there is actual sound being generated.  Because you can’t afford to move, right?  Why are you living in a state that doesn’t even allow you to arm yourself to protect against the criminals who want to harm you?  Why don’t you have bullet proof glass in your house?  Isn’t your life worth it?  Why aren’t you sending your kids to a private school?  Isn’t their lives worth the extra safety?  Why is your wife working, isn’t her job also in a high crime area?  Isn’t her life worth it?
*
The very simple fact of the matter is that only the elite living in Turd World Countries can afford armored cars, gated compounds and bodyguards.  And even they aren’t always safe after throwing oodles and gobs of money at protecting their lives.  And unless you are the Chief Asswhore Officer of Goldman Saks, you don’t get to adequately finance your protection.  This is called Real Life and in that not so musical land devoid of any unicorns, you are always making compromises on your safety.  That is just reality.
*
Now, granted, sometimes you do get some wisenheimer who tries to counter even that.  Just make more money!  Sure, even in today’s economy with 33% real unemployment, you can always make more money.  Why not?  After all, many people today are opting out of the American Dream which is nothing more than a nightmare, where with the skyrocketing cost of rent and health care the majority of all you earn goes straight back to the bankers.  They see no reason to kill themselves for absolutely zero gain.  So a bit of that unemployment is in fact voluntary.  You can still find a job, or one making more money.  It isn’t easy but the drop-outs make it less difficult.
*
Yet, it is my contention that LESS money makes you safer, not more.  Sure, you need a grubstake and a nest egg, but after that you are actually being counter productive.  Prepping is never usually a lone activity, past a few outliers.  Making more money doesn’t translate into more preps, it means the family wants more money and more luxuries.  It means you have to move to a craphole city where the job is.  It means your stress skyrockets which just erodes your future earning potential ( you will burn yourself out, either physically or mentally.  You aren’t THAT good.  Nobody is.  Your body will rebel, eventually ).
*
Prepping isn’t JUST about money.  It is also to a very large degree about intangibles.  It is easy to live cheap and away from crowds, THE most important consideration, because cheap is exactly where no jobs are.  Life will always have stress, and if you aren’t stressed you are probably a pothead living in your folks basement and will never get laid unless you also deal what you are smoking.  So no one wants zero stress since they want to get some sweet loving.  But you also don’t want soul crushing stress, where earning extra money actually ruins your health.  What, you want bleeding ulcers during the apocalypse?
*
But okay, let’s just assume you are a dumb ass and refuse to believe me.  You are bound and determined to work at your super deluxe job and rake in the huge bucks, because your life is too precious to NOT have a concrete bunker in the hills, a top rated battle rifle and battle rifle accessories, four wheel drive Hummers to get there and everything else your little heart desires.  Is it even realistic anymore?  Sure, you can earn more money, but it isn’t enough.  The job might pay a lot extra but that extra buys a lot less goods.  One of the main problems is that the current crop of prepping wisdom, while at the core a blatant rip-off from the 70’s gurus ( which is dangerous in itself since nothing today is like it was then ), was strongly influenced by the 90’s.
*
I pretty much missed out on the 90’s economic miracle ( caused by economically colonizing Siberian oil from the former Soviets ), having the boundless luck to be saddled with a terrible wife who turned into an evil incarnate ex-wife.  I mean, obviously I was the recipient of the times as was everyone, one step removed.  I always found a decent paying job and my living expenses were low.  I got to prep cheaply like most other folks such as $99 Chinese SKS’s and really super cheap Y2K preps from Wal-Mart.  I just didn’t have enough left over ( even after working my best paid job ever, at nearly twice my average wages-that plus much more went the whore ) to invest in historical low priced gold or real estate, quality guns or dirt cheap pallets of ammunition.
*
And those folks that did, good on them.  It was still no small achievement even if that decade was the easiest, and last, opportunity to maximize their self sufficiency.  When oil is $10-$20 a barrel, wonderful things happen such as full employment and dirt cheap everything.  Now that oil can go from $60-$100 and the fracking oil dudes are STILL not making a profit because fracking is about as economically viable as placing solar panels in orbit, you no longer have a cheap oil economy, but rather a dying one.  Today’s economy is NOT like the 90’s, and anyone claiming otherwise because he only looks at the deranged lies of government statistics is a moron and should only dispense advice in the same place he is depositing his body wastes.
*
Prices are tripled and money has lost at least half its value in the last twenty years.  Not only that, but the increased prices are on items we have little control over choosing.  Like a place to live, or going to the doctor.  Even making a lot more money, you get a lot less for it.  A LOT.  Even if you could buy the best gun possible, you need so much money for so much else that it isn’t even feasible.  If it used to cost you $5k to buy rural property, but now it costs $30K, you can’t just wantonly throw money at a deluxe arsenal, unless you wish to give up on that rural land.  Which would be retarded, because having no rent pays you every month.  An arsenal does not.
*
I won’t even get into the issue of relying on more money during the trend of rising unemployment and shrinking wages.  Suffice it to say that the smart money is on relying on less, not more.  And when someone is new to prepping, he comes into that with prior obligations that have already earmarked a lot of his budget.  Even a high earner might not have the luxury of devoting so much to buy the best of everything.  Realistically, the cost of an arsenal is a very large consideration and deserves to be weighted.  Any of you humpers who looks down in contempt at someone because they don’t share your love for Mammon, that aren’t blinded to the fact that our money is in dire danger, hump you very much.  And that’s being nice.

Now that is GOLD right there, plain and simple.

I'm not getting a good reading on all this stuff you keep professing about "not making more money". Maybe I just don't get it. Or I see it from a different angle.

Money is the most important tool to own in a quasi-capitalist (QC) society, and there is no arguing that axiom. It is the tool that facilitates the acquisition of all other tools. You will not survive long in a QC society without continuous access to tools. Water is a tool, food is a tool, so is shelter. The more tools you have on hand the farther you can go with less stress in between. If I have $5 I can eat miserly for a couple days but if I have $500 I can a little better than miserly for a couple months. With that extra money ($500) I have relieved myself of the daily strain of procuring coin for today's meal cause and am able to advance myself in other areas.

Now, having said all that, if the purpose of acquiring more money is simply so that one can spend more, I am not in favor of that. All that does is make all the numbers involved bigger with no long term tangible benefit. It's wise to think long term in all things when considering any financial maneuver, especially expenditures. Parents used to teach their kids this stuff but that role was assumed by the schools and then dropped completely in favor stretching party balloons on cucumbers, and society as a whole dropped in IQ, substituted by QE.

See, we agree completely. Also, while you absolutely need money, needing TOO MUCH is going to cause you problems such as slavery. As in all things moderation.

  2. Nice article. Some folks think more money equals better quality. I found out different after repeatedly breaking Snap On tools and my Harbor Freight stuff kept going and going.

Fancy rifles can actually make you more of a target too. Two people walking down the street, one has an AR, and the other has a beat up looking Enfield, which one do you take out first? Also, if by some chance there is a FedGov gun grab, the AR is gone for sure, if you hide your bayonet real good, they might let you keep the Enfield.

I used to bust my butt and never seemed to get anywhere, but now that I went to the minimist way on my junkland, I have the freedom to work as I please, I don't have a 120 dollar cable bill, 800 dollar rent, 500 dollar car payment, etc. That piece of mind alone is worth it to me.

      =============

Do you not see the irony in this?
You say an AR will make you a target but you're to kill to get one?

Anyway, if you shoot the AR guy first the Enfield guy will still be fooling around with that bolt and nervous hands trying to get a round in the chamber with his blood pressure going through the moon.

But, I already have an AR and a bolt so I'll just hunker down below the window sill holding a small mirror up to watch them and hopefully they'll just walk on by. Then I'll ease out there and cap both in the back of the head.

    3. A dental kit at a discount store has a stainless steel pick and a small mirror on a stick. Replace your dental floss and toothpicks, PLUS be a better ambusher, $2 total.

    6. GS, folks perceive the black plastic poodle shooter as more threatening than the bolt, and by your very statement proves it, you assume the bolt won't be loaded and the user capable of accurate fire.

Of course your plan to bushwhack them both is a prudent one if you choose to engage at all, I was just using the situation as an example

    7. Minor point, but a pick does not replace the role of floss. The value of floss is scraping the sides of each tooth to include below the gum line.
Floss staves off many dental problems and should be heavily stockpiled.
Dual use as a waxed thread that can be used in a pinch for repairs.

    8. I use toothpicks. Floss didn't work well for me. So, even though heavily stocked, the picks are Forever Floss. Not for everyone.

    9. Hah...I just take mine out and soak them in diluted peroxide...no floss necessary.
      Spares required lol

    10. I have no idea what ghostsniper gargles with, but since he is sniper and likely fond of his hidey hole I would deduce he poops in ziplock bags. You can be as careful as you want, but picking your teeth in that kind of scenario would most certainly lead to death. And I get the AR and the bolt. Done and done. :P

    1. Sorry, but this chapter is necessary to lead into the next, which makes a case for including assault carbines in with battle rifles when considering a combat rifle. Well, the whole book is kind of like that, not just the next chapter, so all the more reason for this chapter.

I remember visiting in the hills of north western Arkansas and telling my friend I loved it up there. He said " Well if you move up here bring your money cause you ain't gonna' make any living here". The best place to live is where nobody wants to live....

  5. Yes Jim. A minion has to be a balanced individual with a good bullshit filter in place. If the helmet can be flushed out of the psuedo das-capitalist 'merica shop and show off unicorn pets nonsense, then the minion might make proper decisions. Utilize money only as a seed corn to get started gearing up and not to be considered as the manna and honey signaling your yuppie arrival into the holy land of prepper's paradise. Collapsed society=money is toilet paper. New regime in power ruling your suburbs=money is fire starting tinder. Things are sporty with tracer rounds flying in your area=money is the least useful thing right then. Stay diversified in equipment/gear priorities and not be over invested in the armory at expense of the food warehouse.

  6. "you will burn yourself out, either physically or mentally."

This is where I get to put the boot into Feminism (my favourite hobby horse - mocking feminism). This wasn't my observation but something I stole elsewhere (it wasn't even a "manosphere" site or a topic railing on feminism / grrrlpower).

Anyway the observation was chicks working on roadwork sites. Chicks are holding the stop - slow signs. This traditionally was a job for road workers who needed a break / hung over / recovering from an injury. That is now taken up by grrlpower "I work construction. See, Grrls can do anything". What does this mean for real world? It means higher rates of injury for the men who don't get a break.

That got me thinking about other occupations. The Military. Chicks getting knocked up just before deploying leaving their unit undermanned & the guys carrying the burden.

When I worked in a factory I had to do my own heavy lifting as well as that for the chicks in my area. Biatch! we're paid the same do the same work. Oh dingo but they're not as strong. Then they physically can not do the job!

    1. Thank the government, the one you voted for or allowed to remain in power. Gov't contracts require diversity hiring, prevailing wage, enviromental studies. H.R. departments mandate it as a practice to pre-empt liability/lawsuits. The only fix is a ISIS type takeover and rearranging society. Wear your muck boots, the blood will be running that deep in the gutters.

    2. Don't get me started on all that. The whole point the whole time was UNequal pay. In their favor. I'm not too concerned. One of several good aspects of the collapse will be a quick reversion of gender roles. And a very satisfactory comeuppance.

  7. I am curious where you are going with this. Frugal prepping can really skip the battle rifle and make due with bolt/lever hunting rifles. Half to a third the cost and works fine for escape and evade by giving someone pause before they pursue you.

  9. "Why aren’t you living way out in the country?”

Yeah, I think that’s probably the hardest part for many. If you have enough equity in your city home, and can cash out, and get out, you might be okay, providing that you’re wise enough with your money from then on out. I live outside of a town of about 7K, and though limited, there are some employment opportunities here, and in the nearby surrounding areas. But I’m also only about 25 miles away from a city of about 250K (And a real shithole of a city it be, too!). So if you’re even further out than where I am (as you would want to be) there wouldn’t be much in the way of employment at all.

I don’t have the answer. Obviously, for those that are skilled, and have the option to telecommute, this is a non-issue. I’m guessing that few fall into this category though. You might be able to set up some sort of home based business, but this is becoming harder in the age of Amazon and Ebay, unless you’re offering some kind of niche item or service. Not having debt opens up many more options, and allows you to be employed at a lesser line of work (fast food, paper route, for the few oldsters that still receive a paper). But even these types of jobs are hard to come by in the much smaller town areas.

One thing is for certain. If you still need to work following the move, you will have to be willing to consider many types of work that you might have turned down in the past. Seasonal work might be an option, leaving your main residence for a few months out of the year, while at least one family member stays behind to look after things.

    1. No, no good answer. We are just at that particular place and time. Out of the military, I found work in the boonies, a town of 1k. Today, try doing that. You ain't. I've been in towns of 30k where it was near impossible.

    2. Maybe the fed gov will wise up and just pay some of us "Malcontented Minions" a 'universal basic income-stipend' to have 'em put out to pasture, and just be required to stay out of sight-out of mind in a hinterland area. It would be cost effective instead of a poor sport up-ending the apple cart of society. Them Minions running amok with ar15s and flir scopes with plenty of freeze dried rations can be a real burr under the governments saddle.

    3. If you put all of your eggs (all your future income) in 1 basket (1 employer) then you are doomed to fail. Welcome to the new millennia. You have to be "diversified" (NOT diversity!) and be capable of doing many things. In time you will get good at those many things and you can charge more for your service as people get used to you. This is a whole different way of looking at the world and most people have been sufficiently programmed to abhor it, but it is a fact of life now. When I first started working in 1970 it was possible to work 40 years for 1 employer and then retire but now you're lucky if you can get 1 solid year from any employer willing to pay decent coin. The key here is to become self sufficient regarding your income and you'll be better all the way around. Depending on others through employment makes you, well, dependent. By working for yourself you get to do what you like and keep what you earn - the way it was always meant to be.

    6. Then too, back when I was fresh out of the military. I once was hitchhiking from Mtn. Home down to Elko. Got a ride down to that tiny Berg just south of the Indian reservation. A rancher and his wife picked me up , saying they were headed to their ranch way outside Elko. On the way down , they offered me a job on the ranch !
Just goes to show that even in Elko Nevada, there are jobs. One must think outside the box eh. To survive in this world, be adaptable.
By the way...didn't take the job and they dropped me off on the highway where the turnoff to their ranch was. I ended up walking bout twenty-five miles or so down into Elko.

    7. Thinking outside the box is even easier today as most folks cannot think outside their Facebook smart phone box. No competition.
