I’ve always hated the tripe answer “what is your life worth?” when discussing the cost of firearms.  Because you are expected to answer “a gabazillion dollars” and then the matter of price is quickly dismissed.  Well, Mister Survivalist Studmuffin, if price is no object because you are most certainly worth it, why are you still living in the big city full of crime and Other Colors who despise your very existence and want to kill you?  Why aren’t you living way out in the country?

What’s that?  I can’t hear you over the bright beet red spectrum radiating from your face to such a degree there is actual sound being generated.  Because you can’t afford to move, right?  Why are you living in a state that doesn’t even allow you to arm yourself to protect against the criminals who want to harm you?  Why don’t you have bullet proof glass in your house?  Isn’t your life worth it?  Why aren’t you sending your kids to a private school?  Isn’t their lives worth the extra safety?  Why is your wife working, isn’t her job also in a high crime area?  Isn’t her life worth it?

The very simple fact of the matter is that only the elite living in Turd World Countries can afford armored cars, gated compounds and bodyguards.  And even they aren’t always safe after throwing oodles and gobs of money at protecting their lives.  And unless you are the Chief Asswhore Officer of Goldman Saks, you don’t get to adequately finance your protection.  This is called Real Life and in that not so musical land devoid of any unicorns, you are always making compromises on your safety.  That is just reality.

Now, granted, sometimes you do get some wisenheimer who tries to counter even that.  Just make more money!  Sure, even in today’s economy with 33% real unemployment, you can always make more money.  Why not?  After all, many people today are opting out of the American Dream which is nothing more than a nightmare, where with the skyrocketing cost of rent and health care the majority of all you earn goes straight back to the bankers.  They see no reason to kill themselves for absolutely zero gain.  So a bit of that unemployment is in fact voluntary.  You can still find a job, or one making more money.  It isn’t easy but the drop-outs make it less difficult.

Yet, it is my contention that LESS money makes you safer, not more.  Sure, you need a grubstake and a nest egg, but after that you are actually being counter productive.  Prepping is never usually a lone activity, past a few outliers.  Making more money doesn’t translate into more preps, it means the family wants more money and more luxuries.  It means you have to move to a craphole city where the job is.  It means your stress skyrockets which just erodes your future earning potential ( you will burn yourself out, either physically or mentally.  You aren’t THAT good.  Nobody is.  Your body will rebel, eventually ).

Prepping isn’t JUST about money.  It is also to a very large degree about intangibles.  It is easy to live cheap and away from crowds, THE most important consideration, because cheap is exactly where no jobs are.  Life will always have stress, and if you aren’t stressed you are probably a pothead living in your folks basement and will never get laid unless you also deal what you are smoking.  So no one wants zero stress since they want to get some sweet loving.  But you also don’t want soul crushing stress, where earning extra money actually ruins your health.  What, you want bleeding ulcers during the apocalypse?

But okay, let’s just assume you are a dumb ass and refuse to believe me.  You are bound and determined to work at your super deluxe job and rake in the huge bucks, because your life is too precious to NOT have a concrete bunker in the hills, a top rated battle rifle and battle rifle accessories, four wheel drive Hummers to get there and everything else your little heart desires.  Is it even realistic anymore?  Sure, you can earn more money, but it isn’t enough.  The job might pay a lot extra but that extra buys a lot less goods.  One of the main problems is that the current crop of prepping wisdom, while at the core a blatant rip-off from the 70’s gurus ( which is dangerous in itself since nothing today is like it was then ), was strongly influenced by the 90’s.

I pretty much missed out on the 90’s economic miracle ( caused by economically colonizing Siberian oil from the former Soviets ), having the boundless luck to be saddled with a terrible wife who turned into an evil incarnate ex-wife.  I mean, obviously I was the recipient of the times as was everyone, one step removed.  I always found a decent paying job and my living expenses were low.  I got to prep cheaply like most other folks such as $99 Chinese SKS’s and really super cheap Y2K preps from Wal-Mart.  I just didn’t have enough left over ( even after working my best paid job ever, at nearly twice my average wages-that plus much more went the whore ) to invest in historical low priced gold or real estate, quality guns or dirt cheap pallets of ammunition.

And those folks that did, good on them.  It was still no small achievement even if that decade was the easiest, and last, opportunity to maximize their self sufficiency.  When oil is $10-$20 a barrel, wonderful things happen such as full employment and dirt cheap everything.  Now that oil can go from $60-$100 and the fracking oil dudes are STILL not making a profit because fracking is about as economically viable as placing solar panels in orbit, you no longer have a cheap oil economy, but rather a dying one.  Today’s economy is NOT like the 90’s, and anyone claiming otherwise because he only looks at the deranged lies of government statistics is a moron and should only dispense advice in the same place he is depositing his body wastes.

Prices are tripled and money has lost at least half its value in the last twenty years.  Not only that, but the increased prices are on items we have little control over choosing.  Like a place to live, or going to the doctor.  Even making a lot more money, you get a lot less for it.  A LOT.  Even if you could buy the best gun possible, you need so much money for so much else that it isn’t even feasible.  If it used to cost you $5k to buy rural property, but now it costs $30K, you can’t just wantonly throw money at a deluxe arsenal, unless you wish to give up on that rural land.  Which would be retarded, because having no rent pays you every month.  An arsenal does not.

I won’t even get into the issue of relying on more money during the trend of rising unemployment and shrinking wages.  Suffice it to say that the smart money is on relying on less, not more.  And when someone is new to prepping, he comes into that with prior obligations that have already earmarked a lot of his budget.  Even a high earner might not have the luxury of devoting so much to buy the best of everything.  Realistically, the cost of an arsenal is a very large consideration and deserves to be weighted.  Any of you humpers who looks down in contempt at someone because they don’t share your love for Mammon, that aren’t blinded to the fact that our money is in dire danger, hump you very much.  And that’s being nice.
