BOBBI

BOBBI
[ this could be construed as an informal continuation of the two part article Shelter In Place that ran around the beginning of the month ]. Bug Out, Bug Back In, BOBBI.  Flee, camp, return after die-off.  A lot of us are living in congested areas.  There just isn’t all that many small towns anymore.  Not ones that aren’t too close to others, or that have jobs.  We all have to work and even picking the least congested area within commute range, more than likely there are STILL too many people living there.  The population is fed century old data to give them the illusion this is still the land of plenty and no one makes a fuss about the mouth breathing resource users packed in arsehole to elbow.
*
The Great Depression was central bank inflation induced, but of course there was also overproduction ( the current cause also, for this Greater Depression-banker and corporate greed ).  The farms were mechanized, and food was thrown away and there was still too much.  And that is the propaganda we are still fed today ( get it? “fed” ), as you can see with the Public Service messages on TV ( or in most of our cases, YouTube ). “40% of all food in this country is wasted” or some such drivel.  And while technically true, some caveats.
*
First, the ads make it sound like people just buy food for craps and giggles and let it rot.  The ad shows a bypassed box of strawberries going bad in the fridge.  Most food is tossed by the supermarket because it is blemished or otherwise not worth full inflated price.  The store throws away food to jack up prices.  And, I’d wager a lot of that figure they use is food processors feeding livestock their waste.  Sure, there is fridge orphan food, and restaurant leftover waste, but that is no where near their purported numbers.  So why do these ads run?
*
My guess is that this is indeed a public service announcement.  To condition the bread and circus masses that we are still the land of milk and honey and we could never starve.  Remember when Hollywood was in serious trouble shortly after the 2008 Crash?  A glut of government ads subsidized them, as well as car ads once Detroit got government money ( sure, the Forest Service will replace their fleet with your vehicles.  Now, here is what you’ll do for us… ).  TV is necessary to keep the masses sedated.  Of COURSE ads have political purpose.
*
And, yes, of course there is plenty of food here, even when you know the illegal immigrants are a lot more numerous than admitted.  We also have a glut of oil right now, and since oil is food, food is in quantities that some waste is encouraged.  Yet, half of our domestic oil is fracking, and fracking is a short lived bonanza, already ten years into production.  As goes oil, so goes food.  My guess about these “land of abundance” ads is that we are set to get a lot more immigrants or a lot less oil, or both, real soon.
*
So we probably don’t have all the time in the world to wait for retirement or wait for savings to get to an even smaller populated area.  I’m not saying the entire country goes WROL as soon as food gets a bit scarce.  I’m merely saying that there are long laundry lists of issues getting short shifted that are going to drive you out to safety, long before the mythical Big Flush we all seem to be planning for.  A simple return to 1970’s levels of crime would do the trick.
*
Think about the 1970’s.  We were still a homogenous WASP country, in large part.  The worst crime areas were where immigrants had congregated, such as the Puerto Rican New York area ( to grossly simplify, obviously ).  Now, not only are immigrants everywhere, the whole country has been Diversity Is Our Strength integrated, AND as a special bonus every remaining White enclave is beset by the crack cocaine criminals.  Return to another job killing economy like the 70’s, and the crime rate will be far worse.  It already happened, so this isn’t Fear Porn.  It is just a rerun of past problems.
*
Also, I’m not suggesting that once crime soars everywhere that you should bug out.  I’m suggesting that the reason for the crime surge is going to be the reason to bug out.  The crime should be an indicator.  We aren’t going to see a repeat of the 70’s, where our industrial economy collapsed.  We are going to see another economic collapse.  But while it took a few years to shut down factories and ship them overseas, since our economy is now pure financial manipulation, it won’t take very long at all for the economy to drop to the bottom.
*
It might not be “complete shut down overnight by EMP” as most of those stories so portray, but it is going to move at a far quicker pace than any of us desire or can adjust to.  And hence the BOBBI strategy, which is about the cheapest and quickest preparation I can think of.  If junk land is too far away, and there is no way you can move out of the city, or even if your small town still has too many folks encamped there, the best you can do is a bug out.  But bugging out alone is retarded.
*
You cannot travel with enough supplies, and there is nowhere to bug out to.  Obviously, heading for the hills ( living off wild food ) is not viable.  And neither is storage rental, from reports from more than one minion.  There is Sheltering In Place, and that isn’t the worst option, if you can afford the criminal, fire and mob proofing.  If you won’t be able to get around that, you’ll need a cache at a bug out location, and then a hidden cache at your homes location.  Even with a hardened home, a cache is still a good back-up.
*
The idea is to bug out, hang around at a much safer location eating from your cache, then return home to your much bigger cache that is buried or hidden.  Sure, a huge hidden cache away from the city would be great, but this is a more cheap and quick, better than nothing strategy.  I’ve buried dozens of buckets before, and it isn’t an afternoon activity.  It takes awhile unless you are a really young buck.  Better to plan on a minimal cache away from your home.  I’ll continue tomorrow.

  1. That’s what I had in mind when I touched on bugging out in past comments. My land is in Elko county, but I’m 15 miles from the actual town. Elko, while far removed from major population by miles of interstate, is still off a major interstate, so it’s quite possible that far more people could trickle through the area than you’d ever wish to see in such an event. I’m probably relatively safe where I’m at, but this is a particularly important strategy for you to consider, living directly in said town. In either event, the plan was to vacate at the first sign of trouble, and head out with a pack to the Ruby Hills (or whatever that major mountain range in the area is) and wait it out. Depending on the time of year, could make a significant difference in what you pack. Dead of winter, and you’re going to want a cold weather sleeping bag, and a lightweight one at that, which will be costly (And avoid down if at all possible too). At the very least, you will want to carry one of those emergency blankets. But don’t just get one of those flimsy, generic, tin foil packet types, but rather a heavy duty improved version, as the one in the link below. Of course, this also assumes that you are properly dressed for the weather.

    1. I read that the Soviet troops simply slept in their Great Coats ( I believe the term was ). There had to be a trick to it, unless they were so long no heat could escape from between the bottom and the boots. It would be interesting to research more on this. It would seem more practical and cheaper. And tactically smarter.

    2. Years ago, I remember seeing those German GI poncho/sleeping bags (I forgot the exact marketing term?) From what I gathered, they were the equivalent of the American GI poncho, with the liner for added warmth. But I’ve never had one, so I can’t comment on them. I’ll admit to being somewhat skeptical about the claims made on those emergency blankets, but I researched them, and the one that I linked above was the heaviest that I found at a whopping 1.4lbs. I’m thinking that if you were properly dressed for cold weather, a heavy duty version such as that, might make a big difference. The emergency blanket is also waterproof.

    3. Ever try walking in something that's heavy as he'll and down to the ground.
Me neither but it doesn't sound fun.
I've done some serious backpacking and
A backpack with layering clothes is the only way to go.
If u can't swap out your layers as u go you'll just sweat ur ass off and freeze to death.of course this only applies to cold weather, just go Indian loin clothe in the summer:)

    4. Caution with that specific emergency blanket. Then length is 83" which is great, however the width is 59" which is not great. If you were to wrap yourself in that blanket, using it as a type of sleeping bag, it would gap open on the sides. You wouldn't be able to seal it. I have a medium frame, not fat, and when you're lying on your back, you have to measure your circumference at the widest spot, which would be at your elbows, with your elbows tucked in close. Laying down, my circumference at my elbows is 59". There would be no way to seal the air flow off if you wrapped yourself in that particular blanket/tarp. Other blanket/tarp brands have more generous dimensions and less "attractive" colors.
      Peace out

    5. 3:05-were we just talking about a YouTube guy, Greybeard Green Beret? I think he was talking about the insulated poncho for cold weather gear. Not recalling enough, darn it.

    6. 5:36-I'm a big user of layers. But I think outside in the middle of winter, even that heavy ass outer layer won't interfere with the other layers. It wouldn't be needed most of the time, but guard duty at -20, for instance. Yet now that you got me thinking about it, it would be over kill in this scenario unless you could carry it rather than wear it to and from hidey hole. Around the boonie cache, you might find yourself wearing it more and more if you can't keep a fire. I can't find a historical reference for it off hand, though. I must be remembering the wrong name. The only equivalent might be the navy long coat.

    7. That’s right Jim. He had specifically mentioned the GI poncho with a liner. He was specifying a lightweight bugout bag, which is what I had in mind with my comment, hence the emergency blanket. But the poncho and liner might be a better way to go, I just don’t have one to be able to compare it to anything else.

@ Peace Out. Duly noted. I do have more than a few large wool blankets, but they are so heavy. However, if I were to incorporate my bugout system using the blanket folded in a manner to double as the pack, as Dave Canterbury suggests, this might keep the weight to a reasonable level, and be an option.

  2. Observation notes to share with bobbi minions. When I road trip up and down Nevada (as example-it will be same every where else) I always see many numerous trucks and truck / RV / trailer combos tooling along in all directions all the time. Only slows in volume during overnight periods. These are all vacationing and recreationing people (from city / suburbs) going about there way. Some are prepper types, most are yuppies or outdoorsy beard boys with family unit. They all know where and frequent all the hinterlands and gov't outdoor places. They will be in direct competition for a Minion's sweet spot hidey hole come collapse. Plan for a deep mule or goat trail accessable only spot. Wrol conditions won't allow for making smores with the camping neighbors down the lane from you. Murder, pillaging and looting, then cannibalism will be the activities of the day. Go deep, Go long.

    1. Yeah, I think we are still not really groking the extent of our population explosion. Not many can afford guzzling gasoline, but the smaller percentage that can still equal way too many people.

    2. Too many lightweight prepper wannabes are of the mindset of a tank of gas and vacation packing their suvs and they will run to the hills. Just like every bad hollywood version. An urban island of one million mouth breathers is usually a couple hours away, from everywhere in america. (Salt lake City empties out, it is 3hr 22m /229 mi. to Jim's B-Pod) Even if small percentages flee towards your A.O. it will be hundreds to thousands. This will not go well, at all.

    3. My luck, my new neighbors will all be Yuppie Scum Survivalists who can't believe a #10 can of beef rectums isn't enough to feed them for a month, and then I'll have to deal with them.

  3. BisonPrepper and Glorious Leader made the big time... again. Another mention-not-recommendation by Ol' Remus on the Woodpile Report.

    PS:
No mention nor recommendation about the hair-like substance. I'm sure it was just an oversight. He'll get to it. Next time. I'm sure of it.

  4. Your last paragraph-and-a-half of the "women series" was top. That, after a crash, gals are just going to smile, wave their hand dismissingly and say, "Well, we didn't really me-e-e-ean that", with all their entitlement wishes.

Some of us hold a grudge though... At 62, like Dingo, my days of flirting are over but - oh boy - am I going to try and gently indoctinate my 16 year old that he chooses well. If your boy is as smart as he sounds, in your correspondence, then that's a LOTTO win. That is, he'll save himself some heartache and a shitlaod of money.

Keep the faith, Jim. It seems like most artists have had unhappy lives! Many have not been appreciated till after their deaths. Perhaps in the future you'll then become so famous that folks will say, "Ah! But have you considered the Dakin Dilemma/Effect/Question?"

    Keep up the good work!

    1. It is my hope that the survivors of the bottleneck population squeeze includes a minion, and my name is forever more celebrated. For the longest time I hoped to meet a nympho chef with a huge rack and an arsenal of HK-91's who would be my Sugar Mamma. I came close, but I had to chase another dream, so Bottleneck Celeb is it.
