BEWARE THE BANJOS
We’ve been on a little bit
of a Hollywood kick here lately, even if most of it’s been in the comments
section of other articles. So I thought
it would be fun to cover the depiction of rural folks by the urban elites (
well, the 10% straw bosses, anyway ). It
was all about class warfare, up to the current day, but it will have direct
effects come the collapse. The first
thing to understand that this cultural conflict has been alive and well prior
to the Revolutionary War.
*
Even before the
Constitution ( which was, please try not to forget in your jingoistic fever
dreams, a coup to take over most of states rights. The fact that the War Of Northern Bankers And
Industrialists Against The South’s Agrarians eliminated entirely those that
remained does not negate that point ), not close to all men were equal. This country has always had different classes
neatly divided by an accountants ledger, money making or not, the man. The only thing accomplished-not to diminish
this achievement-was the elimination of class by birth unconditionally.
*
What the Civil War did,
culturally, was entrench the Industrial economy as the premier, leading, ruling
paradigm. It was a bloody change over
from farm to factory as the body of wealth which used to hold power. Just as when the nation state wrestled
control of power and wealth away from the Papists, these things are NEVER
peaceful. Even if the War Of Northern
Federalist Domination was about the loss of freedom, of states to manage their
own affairs, even the end of the Republic in all but name, the foundational change
was economics shifting from agriculture to carbon fuel industrial.
*
And since all rulers must
manage the culture to both vindicate themselves and win the popular mandate, it
was at this point that the already deep divide between the city and country was
cemented and fortified. Remember, this
country wasn’t settled by one culture.
There were several dominant, regional ones, and they never saw eye to
eye. The Royalists in the lowlands south
who built and defended the slave economy were the Elite of the region. The poor up in the hills were NOT of their
class and didn’t own slaves. They were
happy to stay from being ones themselves as they had in practice in their home
countries.
*
The middle class and
ruling fraction lived in the city prior to both wars, the poor in the marginal
farmlands. It was already a segregated
country. What the Industrialists winning
did was strengthen the urban and rural dichotomy. To the Northern victors, the entire South
became a commodity colony and the entire Southern people a serf class. Even the local village heads beholden to the
Yankees for their positions of power were part of the subservient class. And remains such to this day.
*
All the propaganda therein
was the new cultural design to strengthen the industrialists legitimacy and
excuse the subjugation. You always
vilify those you kill and control ( “how dare those gooks object to our outside
influence! Kill them all and let God
sort them out” ). Even as the North lies
prostrate with no economy except bankers shuffling money, it assumes the
superior attitude of a mighty conqueror.
The majestic city dweller lording it over his po’ inbred country
cousins. It doesn’t matter if you live
in California or Minneapolis, the rurals surrounding you are hayseeds and
scumbags.
*
Even the celebration of
those living the simple life is vilification itself. Nothing bad has to be said or implied for
city folk to understand instinctively the underlying message of Bad Other. Not Us.
Evil Outsiders. But of course,
most propaganda is NOT subtle or balanced.
One of the most influential and fondly remembered comic strips ever was
Lil’ Abner. Not the flattering portrayal
of rurals. Ever since Prohibition, wild
law flaunting city folk in smart clothes were portrayed as those Wild And Crazy
Guys, whereas the moonshiner back in the Hollers were just shifty, dirty,
inbred weasel looking batcrap crazy.
Never mentioned was that Shine was the only revenue source in the
economically devastated South ( even in regions that never formally left the
Union ).
*
Devastated by design, by
colonization. The South never recovered
economically until ninety to a hundred years later when Yankees began moving to
the region ( after they had been introduced to the area through serving at
military bases. Then, they promptly
intervened in local politics to suit their sensibilities as Conquerors yet once
again, riling up the Negroes to no good effect.
While their own colored languished in northern ghettos as factories
began to lay off workers ). But to this
day, after all the modernization and after becoming a bedroom community for
Yankees, Southerners are still spat upon and vilified, but no where more than
in rural areas.
*
You think the movie “Deliverance”
has lost any of its relevance? It is
still the Bible of how to hate. The only
difference between when the movie was released and now is that anymore, not
JUST Southern rurals are despised and hated.
It is ALL rurals in all areas except the Yankee heartland ( My
definition of a Yankee is anyone from a state that fought the Confederacy, east
of the 100th meridian. It isn’t
geographically correct, but it is culturally valid ). Dukes Of Hazard was nominally about Rebel
Scum, but to anyone living in the South it was clearly filmed in Southern
California. It was almost vilifying the
rural setting rather than the people.
*
It isn’t just Southerners
anymore. Now it is “Fly-over Country”. Any place not packed arsehole to elbow
with sensitive folk enjoying a cool
breeze tinted with auto exhaust cooling the asphalt under their feet. Metrosexuals isn’t about much more than
celebrating urban life at the expense of anyplace nature touches, and county
music isn’t as much about politics as the place you hang your hat ( of course,
the industry is controlled by urbanite Yankee Scum ). Yankees never, ever, upon pain of visiting
the park, never miss a chance to hate on Southerners, but the hate has extended
to all rural areas.
*
Even back in the day when
movies were supposed to be civilized, Rural Bad was always a message. Look at “Bambi” or “Sergeant York”. Once horror became popular, there was “Texas
Chainsaw Massacre” ( most culture ignores East and portrays the entire state as
West ), and “The Hills Have Eyes” ( now Nevada is just as hated ). “Friday The 13th” clearly taught
us evil dudes thrived outside street lamp lit areas. “Cape Fear” even moved down to the formally
civilized coastal area, now Redneck Evil Central.
*
And that barely scratches
the surface. When Hollywood isn’t being
anti-rural they are being anti-everything else except multiculturalism. Humpers.
And what is going to be the takeaway here, for all those safely living
in the city ( cough ) but forced to flee as their infrastructure
fractures? Rural dudes evil, target
evil. Okay To Kill Evil. It will be like permission from God that the
religious types use to justify asshat behavior.
It isn’t just YOU hating and fearing the Urbans. They feel the same as you.

Yet fly over states gave that evil con artist Duh Donald the election. Even tho he is the epitome of a Yankee.
ReplyDeleteThe hatred of Hillary runs deep , to have ever allowed that to have happened. It boggles my puny brain, as to why they still defend his vulgar ass.
Just proves that the electorate, truly are incapable of self governing. After all, it was long ago stated that Democracy always fails. Always for the same reasons too. They, the people...always will vote themselves a paycheck.
The bottom line is always the BOTTOM LINE RESULT.
If you think about it, doesn't Forrest Trump sort of help the elite? If someone like Trump, or Hilary is elected, that clearly proves the voters are incapable of picking wisely. Which really just excuses the Elite to ignore the President, doesn't it? I'll stop there-this sounds like an article idea.
DeleteI've stated for awhile now that his real goal is nothing more than the utter destruction of the Republican party. So far he seems to be accomplishing
Deletethis quite well.
Sure, why not? Everything he does is about Getting Paid. Yet, I would argue Shrub did more damage to the party. At most, Forrest is finishing it off. Just like Hilary finished off the Democrats with the FBI pimping for Russian Hackers ( surprisingly, she did little damage with all the earlier assassinations ).
DeleteI’m from rural America, and most of the people that I know that voted for Trump, don’t like him, and only voted for him in consideration of the alternative.
DeleteAnd while the American communist party did not technically endorse hitlery, they all but did so (See links below. One of which is actually from the CPUSA website). And that my fine friends tells you all you need to know as to why us “basket of deplorables” that aren’t smart enough to know what’s best for us, didn’t vote for her.

Not voting communist still means you voted for the Imperial Party. Just saying.
DeleteOf course I totally get this Jim. Most of us are painfully aware that voting makes little difference. But when one side openly insults your demographic (WASP) you tend to take it personally, and in turn, stick it to the offending party by voting for the alternative, if for no other reason than to spite them. Throw in pervert and deviant glorification, and female empowerment (at the expense of male demotion) and it’s a done deal. And while it’s clear that both sides could care less about you, one side makes no attempt to even hide it, and worse yet, openly mocks you! So yes, I do take such things personally. Perhaps I shouldn’t, but I do.
DeleteNo, I get it. We all get mocked and screwed over-at least you are doing something about it besides bitches, even if it has no effect. And I can certainly relate to taking things personally. Ten months since I've seen the World's Worst Boss And Worst Human And Worse Moronic Scumbag Of The Universe, and I am still stewing about it. There is a vague hope in that an old co-worker just joined the board of directors. Perhaps our mutual distain will bear fruit. I KNOW it is unhealthy and pointless to still hate to this extent. I'm only damaging myself and my stomach lining. But it is after all that taking things personally.
DeleteYeah, I can totally relate to you on the workforce front as well Jim, and have tons of pent up hostilities that burden me to this day. I had this one hippy manager that let this methhead employee get away with murder, and stress out all of his co-workers when he was coming down off of a multiple day high, and acting like a complete asshole. Turns out this employee was the hippy manager’s meth supplier. When you would confront the hippy, he’d just get in your face and act completely hostile, as if you were in the wrong. Should of kicked his ass, but of course that wouldn’t have ended well for me.
DeleteI also made the mistake of bringing up politics on more than one occasion, and of course this is a terrible idea, especially when your politics are not the flavor of the day views, and this was many years ago.
Knowing what I know now I would have plotted an early exit from the workforce, and could have easily done so having stayed single and child free. I knew that the first week that I ever worked for someone else, that working for others is a demeaning existence, and not conducive to one’s higher self worth.
It took me forever to realize working for others was so damaging. One, everyone has gotten far more incompetent ( as corporates took over Mom&Pops ) and two, I just thought it was what one did, sucking it up. Well, and three, there being no other option 20 out of 35 years as I paid child support.
DeleteOnce again you have nailed it! I was born rural and even though my job took me to the city I always paid to commute from a fringe rural area. Problem with that was the damn city kept following me. When I retired I moved 35 miles from the nearest big city but they are going to build a lake to the west of me and that means that a lot of those city folks will follow me up here. Kinda thankful that I will not live long enough to see much more than the start to that.
ReplyDeleteLook at the bright side. Those lake dwellers will pay, then get screwed.
DeleteThe only real choice in the last election was in appearance of outsider or appearance (and likely fact) of insider for the DC beltway. Just like with Obama the people want the guy that looks like the outsider to the DC beltway. It makes sense though, the people see congress (well not THEIR congressmen) as an outsider tribe running the country and one not responsive to their or their tribes needs - but THEIR congress criter does an admirable job of pretending to be in their tribe.
ReplyDeleteGood insight on the Congresscritters and bribing their tribe. I like it.
DeleteA real rural area/county can circle the wagons and button things up if they have to. The roads can be bulldozed over and barricaded and manned. If there is ample farms-ranches to feed themselves internally they can wait out a collapse-die off. Don't think you can drive up in there in your suv just cause you camped, hunted, fished, visited there once before. Bubba may be a hayseed, but he can shoot.
ReplyDeleteOf course, unifying to button up might be a bit difficult if every third house is cooking meth :)
DeleteYour 100th meridian is too arbitrary only because I hang in the near 87. Perhaps measuring by population density would be better. However there a lot of Cali fat cats that have purchased large tracts in ID, MT, WY, UT etc that skew the population density mode.
ReplyDeleteOh well.....thanks for the article.
I use the 100th as it is the divide between adequate rainfall and not. It doesn't always fit, but probably close.
DeleteAs a former resident of "the big city", I had a poorly thought out plan to bug out to my semi-junk land in ruralville. As a city dweller, I knew that many people had "head to the hills" as their default emergency response. Now as a resident of ruralville, it's rather humorous to see how out of their element the city people are when they come out here. They have no chance of making it after an event if they bugged out to ruralville. Like 11:05 said above, I hope some people near the fringe areas around my ruralville are willing and/or able to react quickly enough to seal off the access points.
ReplyDeletePeace out
I think sealing up will be as natural as heading for the hills. Successfully, well...
DeleteEvery place that manages to even try to seal up from outsiders between where I am and where the high population density areas are is a little whittling down of the 'golden horde' - if such a thing happens. Unfortunately I very much doubt it will be like the envisioned 'golden horde' of post-apocalyptic fiction. Instead I think there will be enough law and order that the national guard or military (or at least state troopers) will be escorting people to be 'relocated' from the cities into new 'full employment assisted living compounds' that the government will be throwing up (think shipping containers and tents and fema trailers inside a barbwire fence line for the refugees - I mean 're-educating workforce') Then the guards for those places will go home and either not come back OR will become themselves the local warlords as things deteriorate as far as rule of law.
DeleteLook at how many people and in what conditions they worked during the public works of FDR employed - now imagine today's millennials generation being forced to work at such things because of their student or other debts now owned by the federal government... And those work centers WILL be put all over the countryside where-ever slave labor can be used to extract even a pittance of value.
DeleteNot only are we now worthless and weak, they were in a situation where motorized oil fed machines were increasing, to help the manual laborers, whereas we will see them decreasing.
DeleteJJ, previous comment-I think you assume more police competence in the face of starvation than is warranted.
DeletePolice and Soldiers always get first dibs on the foodstuff - ALWAYS. The farmers and warlords get second dibs. Everyone else is a mad scramble in the face of scarcity. The troops will do as they are told to keep getting fed, thats drummed into them in basic training (told when to eat, and even to some extent how much). Most cops are former veterans. Things will crumble slowly at first, or rather they already are, unless things go from a slow walk to jet speeds instantly I guarantee that something like my scenario will be tried (how successfully and large scale can be doubted, but not that it wont be tried). Obviously as long as machines are cheaper than people for certain roles thats what will be used, but once the price difference is marginal thats when the collapse will have hit a jogging pace and human slave labor (in another name) will be used in place of machines.
DeleteI am learning about cafeteria style cooking on my off time so that if/when they round me up I will get to work in the kitchens (I hope)...
Notice that it might not be the feds at first. It could very easily be state governments, imprison you for 'failure to pay' and all prisoners 'put to work to repay their debt to society and costs of incarceration (read the government that put them there)' This is ALREADY happening to a minor extent, and since almost everyone has debts almost everyone will be rounded up. The day after I get unemployed I will begin bankruptcy proceedings against my student loans (my only remaining debts) I already have the papers and only need to update them.
DeleteEven without debt they can round you up on almost anything. Posting subversive thoughts. Being racist. And bail is so impossible high on the smallest crap.
