carbon emission

CARBON EMISSION

Well, there they go again Mr. Gorbachov.  Today’s crisis de jour is the new carbon emission reduction law where everyone gets to figure out how to cut power production pollution by 30% by 2030.  Each state gets a couple of years to figure out how to enact Obammy’s new Gore Warming tax ( the mandate to the states isn’t about giving them time to think up new and unique solutions but is just the same old unfunded mandates the Feds love to foster on each individual state ).  Listening to the talking turnip-heads on the radio one would believe that Liberals are meanies and hate capitalism and want us all to die in the dark while wearing Mao jackets.  I think this is not too much more than a consumer subsidy of the fracking gas industry.  And as an unintended consequence the Chinese will buy up coal mines and ship all of our remaining reserves overseas where they will be burned in worse plants than what we are using now and so carbon emissions globally will increase.

If you need completely new plant or smokestack controls, the price of energy skyrockets, even at non-coal plants.  Since coal is 50% of our electrical grid generation, give or take, if that half is much more expensive less energy is generated and then all the hydro-electric and the nuclear and the natural gas turbine plants raise their prices.  Which means this is also a backdoor means of rationing a dwindling power supply.  Since nat-gas is the second largest means of generation, those plants already changed over can benefit from the increased rates with no cost to them.  Frack gas can go up in price, prolonging the “boom”.  Still raping the planet, corporations can rape the ignorant public and make much more money.  You like 17 cent kilowatt hour rates ( up double in ten years )?  Wait until they are one time Alaskan rates of fifty cent plus an hour.  Even if the grid never collapses, it would still behoove you to drastically cut back power usage by multiple means, before the rush begins and you then see price increases and shortages of solar project material, insulation, etc.

On another note-I don’t know if I already mentioned it, but the Katadyn filters I recommended dropped from $70 to $55.  I ordered two and feel much better about my future water supply.  I wouldn’t wait, as these are silver laced and if that precious metal is jacked up, so goes the price of the filters.

  1. dear Hairy Head of knowledge, once again you went off on a rant of non renewable fuel.(sigh).Granted,until the past few years, coal was,(and relativaly is still),cheap fuel.Fracking has brought natural gas to an all time low price,(at the cost of fresh water),yet is not yet a viable alternative,as a coal to NG conversion is costly.Remember back to the 50's and 60's,Nuke power was supposed to be too cheap to meter? Why isn't it today? Well, you have to mine it,(like coal),process it,(like coal),Transport it,(like coal, with safeguards),burn it,(like coal),dispose of it,(like coal, covered in lead). So,lets assume we have a coal burning powerplant, say in Northern Az.(I'm pulling numbers out of my wazzoo, just for argument). It makes 10 megawatts of power burning coal.(It is really there, seen it before).Lets guess that it burns 100 tons of coal to make 10 megawatts,(fairly safe to say).According to the new rules, they need to either burn 70 tons (and still make 10 MW),clean the smoke,(scrubbers?),or convert to NG.WHAT IF,they add 10 MW of solar, wind, whatever, double the output to 20 MW,sell off the excess?Double the MW,and keep the same carbon output, that will cut the claimed emission by 50%.

    1. My point was that it isn't really about polution, it is about profiting someone somewhere.

    2. Or possibly concealing the decline in fossil fuel extraction (reports on the ground around here say the Bakken is nearly played out - until oil hits over $130/barrel or more. And even then it will be dead in _less_ than 10 years at any price if we max extract it (we are at about 3/4 max extract rate now, and that is the optimistic deadline ). This means North Dakota will be a bunch of ghost towns again in a little over a decade (at most), sad, but a great opportunity to scrounge, get deals, and demolish the old.

    3. Excellant report, boots on the ground. Thank you.

  2. Be smart and get ahead of the herd. With the new energy mandate and the anticipated higher energy prices, I expect insulation to increase in price as folks try to make their homes more energy efficient.

Panic early and get your home super insulated before the rush.

    1. As most failed to panic earier about everything, at least to the smart thing with insulating. It may not pay for itself, ever, at current rates, at Alaskan panic rates it is a great investment

    2. As Jim finally realized, the best way to insulate your home is to stick it underground.

    3. Well, it didn't take me long to realize it. The hold up was waiting until the land was close to being paid so I didn't waste my labor digging a hole I'd lose come the economic crash and unemployment ( I was ahead of my time ).

    4. You did it exactly right Jim.
      Ownership _first_,
Caching (inc. tools and minimal construction stuff) second,
Improvements to the land third (excavation, trees, ponds, etc.),
And if you live in a McMansion in town, expect to never truly own it applying the above steps to your junk land instead.
