wishing for another Y2K

WISHING FOR ANOTHER Y2K
It frustrates me when I see the amount of people holding their dinguses, looking around in confusion and exclaiming, “What, Me Worry?”. And when I say “people” I do not mean the clueless mouth breathing oxygen wasting short bus riders that comprise the general population, but rather the supposed preppers out there who should know better. And when I say preppers, I don't mean the Hurricane Doomers who think a case of MRE's, a generator and an AR ( with, naturally, a FLIR scope because if you can't have an AR mounted with FLIR scope you will surely die a horrible and gruesome death seconds after the balloon goes up ) comprise your readiness supplies.
*
Hell, I'm talking about serious preppers, as in survivalists. I use the terms interchangeably but in general one are Pretty Princess Pony Pretend Preppers and the others are getting ready for actual civilization collapse. A prepper thinks it is okay to bug in to a suburban home, a survivalist buries his rural retreat RV, buys ammo by the case only and stores grain by the industrial tote instead of the bucket. But I'm NOT talking about supplies. Yes, needed but no, not the true scorecard. The true mark is attitude, discipline and fortitude.
*
It is unfair and unwise to judge people at your own level of preparedness. After all, I took ten years to get my complete arsenal and twenty to get enough ammunition ( to be fair, I did keep moving my target as events proved how bad things were getting-I was actually fully prepared for Y2K before it happened. I just hadn't realized yet there would be a prolonged economic collapse, Peak Oil and a civil war prior to grid down ), so who am I to judge others?
*
However, I do judge by attitude and actions. Who cares if you are just starting? If you can make the willing sacrifices and dedicate yourself to a course of action, even a beginner working minimum wage is mere months away from being adequately prepared. No, it is those aware of the need dragging their feet and dicking around that sadden me. And frankly, piss me off. Here I am, doing my best to lead you in the search for frugal prepping, and you act like I'm a Yuppie Scum Survivalist Guru.
*
No one is saying, buy 40 acres in the country and build a cement castle. No one is saying, buy a years worth of freeze dried food for ten grand. No one is saying, you need three AR-15's from a retired Sandbox vet that are custom and deliver one half MOA and cost two grand each. And yet, no one is acting as if time is very limited and the end is nigh ( if you ARE acting as such, you won't mind if I make that generalization. If you are guilty as charged, you resemble that generalization ). I really Honest Injun wish we WERE facing another Y2K.
*
At least that one had a Pull By Date. You weren't given an excuse to dally. There was a time limit. Now, I say, hey, look at global Peak Oil in 2005. Look at all the chaos that followed. Now look at 2030 as the very latest date no more oil is pumped ( the Olduvai Theory HERE ). And...crickets. You all treat that on par with the seriousness attributed to far crazier theories such as Mayan Prophesies ( actually, I think more folks were worried about 2012 than any other date ), or pole flipping or the Hidden Planet striking Earth or Gore Warming.
*
Well, okay, we MIGHT be warming. I'd give it a ten percent chance of being correct. But I'd wager a 90% odds on the government hiding the New Ice Age to forestall panic. Lord knows the government tells 99 lies and one Half truth, as a matter of policy. Just like with the weatherman, if you believe in the exact opposite of what the government tells you, you'll almost always be right. See, forecasting made simple. You are welcome. Anyone can do what I do, just without the nice hair. But it doesn't matter, warming or cooling. Crops will be effected either way.
*
It seems that no matter what I say, everybody's Comfort Level is endangered. If I say, hey, no need to go live out on junk land, I realize the wife needs friends and a curling iron. Just move to a small town close to your junk land. You still get a job and a car and a family that hates you less. Winning, right? No, still excuses and timing the collapse very optimistically. I'm really not sure what the point of being a survivalist is, if you think the collapse happens after you die. Why would you view a house as an investment rather than rent, if it was endangered by the ghetto?
*
I know everyone is different. I know some of you will die happy if you just take a few of the bastards with you. I know some of you have preps that make me look like the retard. I just can't see how so many stay calm and don't panic, otherwise. Am I the only one awed that we haven't already crashed? Is everyone else saying, “see, we didn't collapse, again”? I don't see lack of collapse as proof we won't do so in the future. I look at each miracle of non-collapse, see how much worse we are in the best of times today compared to yesterdays worst times, and wonder how we are all still alive.
*
Look at the 1987 stock market 25% correction. Now look at the stock market today ( ignore the Plunge Protection Team and central bank derivatives manipulations. Pretend it is the same stock market ). How much worse are things today? How many folks seem to worry about that? Look at that time, and now, with a third higher population. Yet, we are still supposed to have such great food security? Hint: we are producing one third less wheat. 1980 oil EROI was 20:1. The same amount of oil today is half 10:1 and half 5:1, or roughly ONE THIRD. I'm not sure about you, but since I started worrying, I now have one third the strength and stamina to deal with things three times worse. Even my elementary math skills equates that to trouble.
*
Am I the only one who sees an economic meltdown in 2000 ( corrected by pumping up a housing bubble ), followed by 2008 ( from that bubble, corrected by Infinity Inflation pumping $20 trillion with a “T” into the worlds central bank and tripling the derivatives market ), being a big flashing signal that 2019/2020 is Year Zero? That's, “when the economy reverts to nothing”. Let me put it this way. I'm not worried about my Social Security, seven and a half years away. I'm starting to wonder if I'll even have the opportunity to visit my parents in ten months. I'm now starting to think I should buy everyone silver jewelry for this Christmas, with a 50/50 expectation I'll be keeping it rather than having the opportunity to mail it off.
*
I know, this isn't the first time I've panicked early to avoid the rush. Hopefully, it won't be my last. I don't actually expect anyone to panic with me, just because I started it. But I wonder how many of you really do share my feelings. Might it not be past time to do the really hard preps, like moving out of the bigger cities, or cashing in retirement funds before the banks Lehman? Might this be far less riskier than ever before?

Every time I mention this to my brother, he suggests that you can buy a 6 month supply of food from Glenn Beck’s site, for $2K, and what a deal that is. I try to explain how expensive and impractical that is, but it falls on deaf ears. Of course, he also believes that he and I will never see such a bad collapse in our lifetimes. I’m actually inclined to agree with him on this. At my age (55) I do not believe that I will see this. I do however believe that I will see hard times, similar to the great depression, which very may well result in massive civil unrest, considering that the modern “me” generation, has never gone without.

And if you have a wife and family, moving closer to junk land is probably the absolute best that you could ever hope for. Even the small town life is something that you would not get most females onboard with. Some might chime in that their wives are completely onboard with prepping, and that they are off-grid, in a rural area, etc. But I’ll bet you anything that none of them are very far removed from the major population centers that you will need to avoid, in order to survive. I’ve been around long enough to know that very few females would ever fall into this latter category. Heck, even most males today could not live the rural life (The truly rural life, not 10 miles from a mid-sized town rural life). Even yourself sacrificed your principles to move to downtown, ground zero, to be near a female (I’m not trying to insult you here. But you had more survivalist street cred when you lived off grid in a trailer. You still have more survivalist street cred, then say, Richard Simmons has heterosexual street cred, but you never want anyone to ever make such comparisons, now do you :D)

    1. Well, let us be honest about where I live. Six miles is going to make very little difference. I wasn't far enough away to ever matter except in a strictly Economic Collapse ONLY scenario. It is far enough away if no one had motorized transportation, but only marginally. Moving into town only had the illusion of change. I'm not insulted, I know exactly what you are saying, BUT! I shouldn't really have had street cred for anything other than frugal living. NOT survivalist living.

Perhaps. But I personally thought that you pretty friggin badass. (Seriously)

But yes, the 6 miles from town was only a good toughener upper for what is to come. To do it right, you really needed to go to your hermitage property. I’m glad I hate people, because it makes it a little easier for me to be out at my hermitage property. But even a super misanthropist such as myself requires limited people contact. There are folks that are true hermits, and don’t need people at all, but since I’m more of a hermit than 99.999% of the population, and even I am not a complete hermit, such types must be really rare indeed.

About what population size is "mid-sized town rural"?

    5. It probably means different things to different people 10:59. But for me, I’d say that a town of 5k, is already too big of a town. For me personally, I’d like the cut off to be at about 1k. But I’m also realistic, and understand that most people need to work and support families, so I don’t hold living in close proximity to larger population centers against them. In a previous comment, I mentioned that it’s so much easier to be a single dude, for this very reason. I’ve always found relationships/kids, to be a huge pain in the ass, so this is easy for me. But I understand that I’m different in a way that most aren’t, and that most men really need/want to have a family.

@10:58, glad that some good can come out of my misanthropy :D

  3. Concerning your mention of wheat production...who cares if we produce less wheat now than we did 5, 10, 15 years ago? We STILL have exportable surpluses.
That former wheat ground is growing or producing something of higher value now w/ zero impact to our fat bellies.

Speaking of wheat you noted several days ago THE RUSSIANS, THE RUSSIANS! are producing so much more wheat and are now world's breadbasket (or however you phrased it). Again, so what?
Let me tell you, that wheat is probably grown on former Soviet era state farms under long term lease to German agri-firms. I've seen write ups and photos of a dozen German made (maintained?) Claas & Fendt combines cutting through hundreds of hectares per day. My guess it is all forward contracted to German owned grain exporters. It is no secret farm productivity improves under better management. The Krauts have a plan and are working it. The "Russian" surpluses you see today are the result of securing legal rights to farm, installing farm infrastructure (maintenance barns, elevators, drying facilities, fertilizer purchase/storage, rail connections to ports).
It took time and euros. The Germans made it work. It has little to do with global warming/cooling, "peak oil", or Ornamentals working in sweatshops.

All part of Berlin's "Ostplan" of economic integration. What do you think Maidan coup a few yrs ago in neighboring Ukraine was about?

I would suggest if you are so worried about wheat availability you un-ass from Elko and move several hundred miles east. Just to make it easier on yourself stay within 50 miles of the 100 th meridian. That's a nice compromise between arable land and sparse population. You can grow all the wheat you want for yourself on less than acre without even trying very hard...

I look forward to seeing you in 2030 when oil is still flowing and Americans still fueling up for a Sunday drive. Might be worth flying into Elko on a chartered jet !!
    Will you host me?

    1. Come 2030, I would gladly and with enthusiasm eat crow if I am wrong and we still are in BAU. If you are right, I look like an idiot. If I am right, you are dead. Which are you betting on? The only reason I harp on our reduced exporter status is that in conjunction with overpopulation, we are NOT producing as we were. To think we are still the global breadbasket ignores our increased vulnerability. I'm not saying we are all about to die in a famine, I'm saying our food surplus is more propaganda now, like our "Energy Independence". It is a battle cry against hubris, not doom porn for its own sake.

    2. We aren't producing as much wheat as we were because it is less PROFITABLE or wheat farmers sold out to R/E developers all along the Front Range from Colorado Springs past Denver up to Littleton.

What do you expect? You want farmers to grow wheat at a loss just to have production numbers? Not a chance.

Many decided to take advantage of CHEAP natural gas (from fracking!) to power pumps. They tapped deeper into the Ogallala aquifer in order to raise irrigated corn silage/alfalfa for all the mega dairies that fled SoCal and the oppressive regulations and taxes. Riverside County used to have lots of drylot dairies to supply LA. Cali air quality regulators went after them for "particulate" pollution (aka. DUST). As a result they left for flyover country.

The biggest organic dairies in USA are in eastern Colorado (Horizon Milk), western Kansas and southern Idaho (e.g.Chobani yogurt).
I know a central Texas dairyman who relocated to far top of Panhandle and dramatically increased herd size....his market is a cheese plant that left SoCal and setup shop nearby. The plant makes 'industrial' cheese for frozen pizza etc and whey for "body builders" protein powder.

These mega dairies with thousands of cows under roof pushed out wheat. Money talks.
Oh, those pesky profit seekers (snarc)

Eventually, when the economics of the Ogallala play out....they'll go back to planting wheat & the cows will go back to Wisconsin and upstate NY.... Maybe😕.

Now, is it smart to tap into Ogallala for water hungry corn? That's a whole 'nuther question.

I'll worry about US food security when I see motorized scooters for obese people at supermarkets collecting cobwebs from disuse. I'll worry when a picture of pedestrians on any street today resemble photos from 1946.
We have a long ways to go to match the trim healthy people emerging from WWII in US, replete with "rationing". All the while supplying vast tonnage of food to war wrecked Europe & Japan.
Just a note...Germany lost the war but rationing in W. Germany ended years ahead of the U.K (1953 some items?).
Why? Because, govt bureaucrats and Labour's insane economic policies not because of nature or resources.

    3. You know I love when you talk farming specifics. Learn lots, new, every time. But don't your arguments kind of prove mine? A one time tapping of a diminishing aquifer underscores my point we have moved from being such a huge food surplus provider. Yes, suburbia killed a lot of farmland. So what? We can't go back to get the land again. Yes, a lot of us are fat. Because we eat more as the body is desperate for nutrition we aren't getting from crops grown in denuded soil. Or, eating all that corn derivative crap ( and corn strips the soil ).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWt94Qelm9M

I believe that it would be best to just dive right in and build one from raw materials found in nature, just to get the feel right up front on how feasible they are as a survival weapon, given one’s primitive skill set.

I saw that Matt Graham, of Dual Survival fame, has a few videos as well, that are probably worth checking out.

    https://duckduckgo.com/?q=atlatl+weapon&t=lm&atb=v1-1&iax=videos&ia=videos

I personally feel that a bow would be far easier to master. But it’s also apparent to me that an atlatl is far easier to produce in a primitive scenario with limited tools. As such, it’s probably worth looking into some more.

You must be able to build it and use it in the field with relative ease and accuracy) and in the mean time, you can hone your skills by shearing the nuts off of a democrat voter at 50 paces. 11. Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you...
FWIW, having discussions with likeminded people in the city, have brought about some old ideas, the fast “Hump.” 1. You have to make it over that initial "hump" of whatever goes down. If you’re young enough, then you might have a chance. If you have a team of motivated office types, they too have to make it over the initial "hump," then have the means to meet up. Who has their teeth fixed and up to date on health?
The long drawn out "Hump." 2. Frogs in the boiling pot cliché. Hardly anyone has the means of energy to move and where to with no money. I believe there have been talk of .gov support during this time. Squatters that used to be owners from next door or down the street, waiting on a .gov "fix" for the problems. (Like so many people are waiting on now!) Varying levels of what personal responsibility ought to look like, and what is put into practice. Meaning, what should have been done and what is being done, and when it gets done. Too late and expensive to move, travel, or try to get hired on as a farm hand.
The new fix from .gov and the even slower drawn out “Hump.” 3. “I told you so,” and there is no collapse, reset or new growth industry. Just somehow the jobs stay somewhat the same and some what the same people employed while dissidents, (see FBI Conspiracy Theory Terrorism deally) get a no knock party to relieve them of tax and breathing concerns and said problem child’s left-over supplies go to the highest ranking official. Any questions, and you too can play guess the No-knock Party Date for you!
FWIW, long storage; PVC builds. .50cal cans are neat and hold a lot of ammo, but, after not sleeping for three days and maybe a bite to eat and that .30cal can starts to get real handy in terms of carry weight.

YMMV, haven’t been through a large collapse, just a few manageable ones from the last couple of decades.
    ~Cheers,

  12. As an esteemed 'senior member' on IRV2, the forum for RecreationVehicles and their operators, yesterday's opening thread was 'The Future Of Boondocking'.

The normalcy bias folks were big on Tesla-mobiles, photovoltaic panels, evaporative gray water disposal, and mobility to a different view every few days.

My post, number '69', explores boondocking from the extreme likelihood of another few dozen millions of illegals, every city looking like Detroit times Baltimore, and every hospital a war-zone.

According to my Crystal Balls, every RecreationVehicle will be used for permanent residence... some legit, some taken and held by force. Until it disintegrates.

I also see Law Enforcement Officials prioritizing requests for emergency assistance. If you have something to seize for auction, you get first dibs on Law Enforcement Officials. A tramp-camp of squatters dope-fiends illegals is lower on the wait-list since they have nothing worthwhile to seize. And the increased likelihood of getting the tires 'removed for safe-keeping' from the MRAP.

I manage to be vastly amused by eaters and cannon-fodder, and normalcy bias. Fortunately, a daily dosage of BisonPrepper boosts my feelings of superiority over mere lesser beings and their hopes and dreams for Everything Staying Just Like It Is aka ESJLII.
