IMMEDIATE TRIBE 3
*note: Wal-Mart and Amazon have come way back down on their bucketed wheat prices. Not the old $15, or the short lived $35, but now in the middle. Wal-Mart is $23 store pick-up, Amazon is $26 with free shipping. Are you sure you want to wait much longer?
*
note: if I recall correctly from all my post-apocalypse movie reviews ( http://amzn.to/2hFWFpt ) I'd call the darkest, doom-iest, gloomiest movies "Road Warriors" and "Tooth & Claw". Well, if you have Netflix go watch "The Survivalist" ( or, DVD, http://amzn.to/2y3RndH ), which out does those two. Super Deluxe Bison Seal Of Approval. I thought I was paranoid and understood human vileness, and this film put me in a much darker place. It isn't action, and lower budget, but the story is superb ( not without a few obvious flaws, but relatively benign ). It starts with a animated graph showing a population line going up with an oil line, then oil turning down followed by the population. Then it gets even better.
*
note: Green Mountain Dude ( here ) had another great article. Heating your body rather than your space. At the beginning he talks about wood heaters. As in, why do you have another AR rifle and not a wood stove ( it is assumed you adjust the question by climate )? Because it's too expensive? Here is the po' boy answer to unaffordable woodstoves. Rocket stove and a pipe running through a cobb mass. You need a barrel and some pipe, that's it. Anyone can afford them. Here are some videos click here
*
So, you can’t form a group
retreat of survivors. Few have the
finances ( land is far more scarce and more insanely expensive than when this
advice originally came about ). Going
with a militia is pointless since the default acceptable training is obsolete
Oil Age second generational. You are
left with civilians. A term of scorn
directed at the untrained and unmotivated.
And most importantly, those outside your tribe. Even though, let’s face it, you are barely
over their level of incompetence if you live in their neck of the woods (
suburbs, on-grid, near the city ), so don’t get TOO condescending and
judgmental.
*
You are faced with
financing the logistics of ingrate dumb asses.
THAT is your group. You might
fantasize about having professionals join your group and self-finance, but for
99% of us that will remain a fantasy. I’m
sure one or three of you have attained this ideal. I submit to you that the NORM is for the need
to feed a bunch of morons. This is
pretty bad. If there is one life
experience, time after time, I wish I could unlearn, it would be being
surrounded by douche bag families I inherited at marriage. Okay, now a caveat. I know I attracted a certain kind of
female. Their families reflected their,
ah, let’s call them proclivities to be nice ( previous wives-not the current ).
*
Yet, the stories I hear
from minions on their extended families lead me to believe there is a certain
universality to those families. Which
reflect the general public, and not in any stretch of imagination is that a
good thing. It has simply been far too
long living in a centralized oil economy and nobody can conceive of hardship or
self reliance. Even us preppers, picking
and choosing between luxury and poser pioneer levels of “roughing it”. I say this not to belittle but to
advise. Even you are not above enjoying
the modern lifestyle as much as possible ( you own a car, I live in town, we
all communicate online ). Think of it
like learning a second language.
*
If you go overseas to a
fuzzy foreigner country and immerse yourself in the language, you will pick up
a rudimentary level of communication in very little time. If you have a guide that speaks English, odds
are good you will learn a few words for dinner, a lot of cussing and perhaps “bathroom”
( “taxi” is nearly universal-the one word least changed in the most languages )
and have absolutely no ability to speak the lingo. Now, if you immerse yourself in an
infrastructure, what is going to happen?
You start living and thinking in that system. You are doing yourself very few favors
prepping wise, because you will never master than type of living by NOT living
it ( I speak long term, not two week disaster supplies. Speaking of, how are those short term
preppers making out on Puerto Rico about how? ).
*
I hope by facing the fact
you are less prepared than you think because you are immersed in Oil Age
Living, you’ll understand why your extended family members act as they do. You are probably NOT living as if modern
infrastructure is transitional, so why should your family? Since prepping is a faith based act (
regardless of “proof”, it is still a very religious act of acceptance ), your
family is merely an atheist caught at the door by Mormon missionaries on their
way to work. All your talking means
nothing. You think a hurricane hitting
the entire state and forcing millions to evacuate is proof of the need to
prep. To them, it is proof things always
go back to normal.
*
Family being your
immediate tribe is the historical norm.
Professionals financing a retreat is definitely NOT. You are looking at your tribe like you are
looking at a perceived arsenal. Based on
myth and wishful thinking and a “norm” which was but an abnormality one-off
event already obsolete. You are working
with outdated information. Sorry. I’m here to collect obscene wealth by telling
you everything you are doing wrong. Like
mucking out a clogged sewer pipe or embalming corpses, it is far from the most
glamorous job, but it needs to be done.
*
Are your future squad
mates a bunch of complete douche bags incapable of independent thought,
completely lazy and worth less than a bucket of warm spit? Probably.
And so are most recruits joining the military. You aren’t going to be faced with a surplus
of choices, so you lower your standards.
With the military, you spend lots of money trying to turn the majority
into mediocre soldiers. Your retreat
group, your immediate tribe, also requires that kind of level of
investment. You can’t train them, you
can only equip them. On The Job training
is the only answer. At BEST, you have a
buddy you also prep for, who is less of a moron.
*
Don’t try to turn anyone
to The Dark Side of preparedness. If
they show an interest, by all means nurture it as you would a single spark in
tinder ( actually a better analogy might be trying to get a spark from a friction
bow, to reflect the effort and lack of success ). But your feeble efforts at getting anyone to
self-finance are going to be, again 99 out of a hundred, worthless. Look at the state of the economy where for
the last decade the middle class has been bled of all home equity and the true
unemployment late is worse than the Depression of ’29. Few have money, at least on the level of
perception ( but perception is reality, is it not? ).
*
You already own a crappot
full of guns. Make sure your family can
use them. You merely need far more
ammunition and wheat. It is STILL going
to be expensive, given the Long Tale of support personnel each potential
combatant brings along. Are you sure you
have an alternate choice? Family isn’t
only an obligation, they are your only real means of support and help. They are worthless as preppers, but they are
your only tribe. What? You think after the collapse you can wander
the land and pick and choose survivors who are still stockpiled? Why would they want anything to do with
you? At least with your family, they
must accept you. They might be worthless
but they are one huge leap above strangers.
*
When you wish upon a
pre-stocked prepper group star, do you know who you remind me of? A selfish greedy corporation who wants you to
work for them for nearly free, AFTER you have been trained on your own
dime. Don’t be that guy. We all wish we could be the rich guy with a
Korean hooker, but it isn’t realistic.
END ( today's related link http://amzn.to/2yg9lOn )
* By the by, all my writing is copyrighted. For the obtuse out there
I believe the whole notion of family, as it is today, will have an entirely different reality when the bottom falls out. In a thousand different ways family's have been shattered though most people refuse to realize it. Combine that with the fact that most people have been bred to be natural born foot draggers, and I have no problem understanding a 90% die off in the first year, about 50% in the first 3 months.
ReplyDeleteClement Stone said: "You can't do business with family or friends", and he is right.
My father in law equated estate dispersion after a family member dies as the "grab bag", and he was right.
You don't really know someone until you've done business with them or divided an estate with them for that is when their real character is revealed. Survival after the big bang will be the same way but much worse.
Lastly, when I was a teen I thought my dad was partly insane, then he died from a heart attack when I was 25 and he was 47. Once, in a fit of frustration, he exclaimed, "I get along fine with most people but my family is trying to kill me!" The older I become, the smarter my dad gets.
Just did an article-look for it in a week-on needing to retrain your family members. With force if needed. Family does blow. I've had wives who thought they were still owed by their mother, ten years after moving out, to in-laws cheating each other out of inheritances ( which were gambled away ). I disowned my sister for disowning my father after he stopped paying for her college when she went from four years on to six ( and he was getting rapped financially in a divorce ). The NOL sends emergency money to family and then finds out the money was used, literally, for a dinner out for the extended family. I paid the way out of trouble for the ex stepdaughter many times and the last I heard from her she had stole forearms and wool blankets. Not because of need but to hurt me. All bitches and ho's.
DeleteI know watcha sayin Jim, when I was down you and minion's helped me out ! Not family...
DeleteAs a consequence I feel a sense of loyalty owed, cuz that's what tribe is about.
Screw family which aren't loyal and sharing. I've many friends whom say mi casa es su casa.
I guess because friends need to earn and family thinks they deserve it from birth? Royalty verses elected President, perhaps.
Delete"I paid the way out of trouble for the ex stepdaughter many times and the last I heard from her she had stole forearms and wool blankets.”
DeleteSome years back now, I worked with a dude that married into a very similar familial situation. The moment that the ring hit his then middle aged, overweight, unattractive wife’s finger, the gash between her legs sealed up permanently (at least for him). At that point her adult children (by at least two different father’s) saw a huge lollipop stenciled on the face of my not overly bright co-worker, and decided to “move back home”. Checks were forged for a few grand to purchase cars, and cash and other possessions disappeared. When he went to reach for his SKS one evening, it was gone! The wife or one of her kids hocked it! I always wondered why when he opened his wallet at work, it was filled with hundreds of dollar bills. He couldn’t leave anything behind, so when he cashed his check, he kept his money with him at all times (though why he didn’t open a separate checking account is beyond me).
I don’t wish to offend anyone, but modern day marriage for the western male is pretty much a net loss. With the money you save by staying single, you can prep like a mad dog, and not play all these stupid and costly games with having to “entice” the old lady out to the BOL. You could easily afford a nice escort once or twice a month (which is more than the average married dude gets laid) and get yourself a RealDoll® to tide yourself over in between sessions.
LOL - You're right about inheritance revealing true colours.
DeleteWhen my grandparents were on their last legs some of my uncles & aunts put post it notes on furniture they wanted. The grandparents were still alive. The family home is to be sold & proceeds split. However one uncle can stay in there rent free. The way it was worded he can (& is) going to live there until he karks it.
At the end of the day you just have to overlook that sort of nonsense.
12:07-the combo of us not being too bright and easy sex before the wedding night works on most of us. It sure did me.

Dingo-post it notes on the stuff while they are still alive! Priceless. I'd want to burn it all instead of giving it away, but perhaps they were "buying love". I've been there, even though I attribute no evil to it in this case.
Yes, good points commander bison. Leadership is going to be a more important skillset than most other skills. Politics and human interactions will always be required when a third or more persons are involved, family or not. If you end up with a somewhat functional rabble, that is what you have to work with. Guns, ammo, starvation rations alone will not ensure longer term success. If one has leadership abilities, skills-not bullying, make it into something that might save all of yer asses. P.S. hitler, stalin, etc. Were not alpha males just smarter at what-politics. Use terms/names for your group as well as uniform/color coding like sports teams/gangs to unite-unify non family into tribal identity. Then add in a bit of order/discipline and stir well. Let simmer on low heat, add seasoning to taste and done.
ReplyDeleteThink how many good bosses you ever had. Very few. Leadership is rare as non-asswhore family members. And it isn't even hard. You put their interests ahead of yours, smooth out conflicts and be part of the team rather than just leading it. Common sense helps. Oops, maybe that is why it is so rare.
DeleteExcellent series. Thanks for putting it together.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of the e-bike in the link below Jim? Yes, I see that the lack of pedals could be a downside, but because it doesn’t have all the hardware required for gears and pedaling, it’s a light 26lbs, so you could easily push it or carry it if you had to. But of course you would want to have a pedal bike as a backup for when you could no longer replace the batteries. In the mean time, something like this could power you well into the apocalypse, and with a few spare battery packs, it would probably serve the middle aged prepper for life.
ReplyDeleteThis model has two contradicting statements with regards to speed, but I think that you would probably want one that does at least 20 mph, and has a range of about 20 miles. If you didn’t have to commute beyond a few miles, this just might be the ticket for some. Here in the PRK, that commie Brown raised auto registration and fuel costs significantly. Something like this would be just the ticket to sticking it to da man, if you rarely travel beyond just a few miles.
https://www.amazon.com/Ancheer-Folding-Electric-Bicycle-Scooter/dp/B071KG2Y2V/ref=zg_bs_3405141_4/142-5879833-7267656?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=S4ADJ6MDDXSWFCZ0JT8M
On the plus side, relatively cheap and easy to stash, and as you say, avoid the cost in taxes. Down side, same price as a bicycle with front axel motor you can charge with solar panels. The battery is going to cost you more. Only 12 mile range. Less cargo space than with the bike. Even though I would be leery, it ain't totally bad. Mopeds are already needing to be licensed now, so would insurance be far off for tax strapped states? E-bikes should avoid that and are much cheaper.
DeleteThat was just one example. They had a model that went 20 mph and had a 20 mile range, but it was a few hundred more. But all of the e-bikes that I saw that also had pedals, were of the multiple speed gears sets that you recommend against, and I agree with this as well. Maybe they have the single speeds, and I just didn’t see any in my limited search. One advantage of the pedals though, was that if you could not make it up a hill with the electric motor, you could pedal assist to get up it, so that’s worth noting. Here in the PRK, we need to register and license the 50cc Mopeds, but not the electrics.
DeleteI was just throwing it out as a suggestion for others, since for me, this isn’t the best option. A motorcycle would be more practical for what I want to do. My favorite national forest is 80 miles away, so that’s way beyond the point of practicality for an e-bike. I’m 53, and I’d like to squeeze in as much living in as short of time that I have left, as possible.
Here is the front tire with e-motor you attach to your single speed cruiser http://amzn.to/2y6OHfp
DeleteI'd put the battery/ies in the front basket. Three motorcycle batts hooked together to get 36v. Not sure how long it would last per trip, but if you were just doing hill assist it should be enough. It would take you another ten years before you were so crippled even that wasn't enough.
Here's a guy living the Bison Dream but getting a rough time from the council
ReplyDeletehttp://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/every-mans-caravan-is-his-castle-as-wa-landowner-fights-to-live-in-middle-of-nowhere/ar-AAutDL4?li=AAavLaF&ocid=ientp
Link is down. Perhaps the council just has extra time on their hands. Is weed legal there? Someone should get them high, since I'm sure it is illegal to get them laid.
Delete“Shire CEO Rhonda Evans said there was an incorrect belief within some sections of the community that people who pay their rates can do what they want with their property.”
DeleteI managed to open the link Jim. The above confirms without doubt that there is no such thing as private property ownership in western countries. Then again, paying taxes on something that you own in order to keep it, pretty much told you that already. Mzzzz Evans, needs to be slapped across the face with a petrified Mastodon penis.
Mr Gopel clearly hasn’t learned the valuable lesson that this sort of thing doesn’t fly when you’re living in close proximity to any city offices, or other people. It has to be out of sight, out of mind, or you’ll never be left alone. There are still a few places here in the U.S. where you can still do this sort of thing on your own property. But the only reason is that they’re so remote, that they lack such things such as the “Building Gestapo” and the such, and have no economy (jobs) so you need to find an alternative source of income.
Renting the property we "own" wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so expensive and the system wasn't so rigged to the elite enrichment. Since 2008 property tax has doubled/tripled and it wasn't that low to start. You need to milk the cow, not slaughter it. And it will just get worse.
DeleteNope to the E-dope guys! Stick with butt simple and rugged gear. Regular pedal bike. Bolt gun or sks/ak. Revolver or proven auto ruger p series, glock, beretta if yer richer. Perculator coffee pot, not electrical. Wind up clocks and watches. Rocket stoves, potbelly-wood stoves. Leather boots, wool clothes-blankets. Hand tools, manually operated equipment. Mutt dogs-not useless prince lap breeds. Etc. Etc. Etc. Flush out your helmets guys, stop snivelling about useless family-bedmates. Divest yourself from them, go rogue and freelance it, stay loose and mobile in thoughts and actions and you will be better for it.
ReplyDeleteGood advice, simplify. I'm still pedaling away, but there might come a time I'll need e-assist up the hills. I doubt I'll last that long ( right now, I just push up the big hills. If it comes to the time the slight inclines kick my ass, I should already be dead ), but it is a Just In Case plan.
