greasy meat

GREASY MEAT

No, not my junk.  Today’s subject is a two-fer ( at the same total word count ) on storage oil and storage meat and the sad, pathetic and new normal state of its availability.  Then, I throw in my vacation so as to have a “what I had for dinner last night” article just to hack off people.  I do apologize for the lack of any notice that last Monday was going to be a vacation day and comments would not be posted.  That one kind of got away from me as Friday was pretty much a run around until I’m blond work period.  A few weeks ago I got tired of smelling the storage oil that had finally turned rancid at about the five year after expiration date mark, and decided it was time to dump them.  Remember, out in the boonies I have neither trash pick-up nor are burn barrels a great idea.  And no car to haul in trash.  So I dug a hole and scraped out twenty buckets of lard.  I’d already replaced them with plastic container shortening ( the old wax paper types are worthless for long term storage ).  Being in the eighties still most days, the glob melts and soaks into the ground.  Here is the thing.  NO animal was attracted to this free high energy bonanza.  Not our cat who is kind of weird and loves butter and yogurt  and pudding.  Not any neighbor dogs.  Not carrion birds.  Not even insects.  This crap is NOT food to them.  It shouldn’t be to you, except as storage food where it will keep you alive when no other fats are available.

From Elko to Gardnerville Nevada is 330 miles.  There are four Wal-Marts on that stretch ( Reno is out of the way, and the second Wal-Mart in Carson doesn’t count either being off the route ).  Out of those four, I was able to purchase thirty pouches of cooked hamburger crumbles only.  My goal had been fifty with more purchased monthly.  Now, thirty itself ain’t bad.  That replaces storage meat I’ve eaten over the years ( as the very old cans start to rust ).  My post-apocalypse food pantry doesn’t contain daily meat-merely weekly and I’m thankful for that.  But for that many stores to all be out of stock TWO FRIGGIN WEEKS after the savage pig-dog’s on Obammy Bucks have shopped for the month is indicative of larger issues.  Do NOT, let me repeat, do NOT, expect stores to have anything worth a crap food storage wise on a short term normal basis and absolutely zero three minutes after any panic great or small.  It ain’t just Wal-Mart but the JIT system in general.  As I’m only shopping once a month because of the car rental, it might take me sixty more days just to get back up to my original goal of this last shopping trip.  I don’t think I’m being paranoid to suggest that the distribution system and the system carrying capacity are both already in the process of failure.

  1. You could try ordering it on the Wally website. If nothing else it would puzzle the hell out of a slackjawed manager.

    1. I tried looking it up. No luck, but I'll get the brand name and try again.

  2. Ah!. Grease meat.

I'm an expert in that subject. (certified). All you have to do is look at my wife.

She's just like you. "She knows everything".

She keeps this shit up for much longer and I'll be single again.

No more fatty meat, no matter how rich she is.

Having big bucks makes you "VERY BIG".

I RATHER CONTINUE TO BEING 145 POUNDS THAN HAVING A BIG FOOD RESERVE AROUND MY BELLY.

    Oz. (not the wizard.

  3. That lard doesn't even make good biofuel. I've burned some in my diesel van converted to run waste veggie. Too much of that junk is bad for the rings so I mix it with canola or soy. Yep, not even fit for use as a motor fuel. I was offered about 100 gallons of the stuff for free and refused it.

    1. You'd think it would be good for something. Oiling metal for rust prevention?

  4. It's slowly soaking in. I'll eventually get around to throwing the dirt back on the hole.

  5. Quite possibly, because it turned rancid, all the nutritive and caloric value of it was gone or turned toxic. That might explain why all animal life avoided it. I would be interested in knowing if it would burn at all. Also if it poisons or boosts the plant life where it is buried. Keep us posted.

    1. Not all of them smelled "off". Really just the paper wrapped ones, not the plastic.

  6. Couldn't rancid fats still be utilized for primitive style wick lamps or torches? Or for making soap post SHTF?

    1. Makes sense- perhaps the issue is over abundance now stifling experimentation.
