switching assets 2

SWITCHING ASSETS 2
As I said recently, I no longer had any Spidey Sense I needed more ammunition. Fifteen thousand rimfire for bolt/single shot 22's is a damn fine Forever Gun arsenal. And near ten thousand rounds ( if reloading components are included-the later rounds will be 7.62x39 rather than 303 Brit, to stretch out powder and lead ) of battle rifle bolt action is more than enough ( and as I don't plan on carrying a sidearm, a thousand rounds of 357/38 are sufficient ). But since I'm adding a third arsenal ( “sniper”, put in quotes since I'll be lucky to perform at marksmen level ), I need to start at the beginning again.
*
In my humble estimation, and you know just how durn gosh humble I am with my opinions, you need a minimum of five thousand rounds of ammunition for a bolt action rifle, for the apocalypse. Mainly because it won't be higher crime followed by a die-off. It will be higher crime, followed by a civil war, THEN followed by a die-off ( minimum semi carbine, 20k. Minimum Forever Gun, 10k. Minimum revolver, 1k. Minimum semi sidearm, probably about $3k-although I've given that far less consideration than the others, judging it optional for myself ).
*
Since I now have two AR's, I won't be happy at 5k. I'd start being ecstatic at 8k, but I'll settle for 7k. Why? That is what I have in the new budget, AFTER I set aside 20% for soybean meal in buckets. 40% for more ammo so I can truly finally say, enough dipping into savings ( I can always spend monthly, but the amounts are usually in dozen of dollars instead of hundreds ). And 40% in more silver. So, my total money cash type in unemployment savings was $6k. I can live, in desperate total belt tightening piss off the NOL with less rent times, as low as $150. Six grand was a long unemployment amount.
*
I would have preferred five years savings to three, but Sweet Baby Jesus On An Applecart, how many people can say they can live three years on their savings? I cut that down to $4k for the Host Fun Project, because I had $1500 in bank savings ( I don't consider money in the bank long term safe, so to me it doesn't exist ) and I was gambling but not terribly. It was pushing the envelope but still technically safe. But, dammit, if I was keeping the AR's, three thousand rounds simply wasn't enough.
*
It would have been enough for a Host Fun, because they served exactly ONE purpose-to start fighting and acquiring new firearms ( I'm still burying most guns, but now they are going to carry more repercussions come confiscation ). Now, not being invisible, or “last ditch”, they require a proper amount of ammo. So, another four K rounds, $800. $400 in soymeal. Leaving $800 in silver. Which is forty ounces. I ordered through Golden State Mint, who I prefer only because they smelt their own coins. Meaning NO Chinese fakes.
*
The silver price ordering on the Labor Day weekend ( new minions-I write each article one week in advance, so expect time disconnect. It gives me a cushion in case of sickness or travel-as if I ever experience either. But just in case ) was eighteen and a half. Around $19.20 buying my favorite, the bison/Indian head. A fee for using a debit card and requiring a signature for delivery brought each coin to a few pennies over $20 each. The soybean amount was arbitrary, but was enough to “bribe” my conscience. I don't need more calories, but definitely more protein.
*
Am I excited it is the dreaded “girly teet” soy? No. Am I excited to have ANY extra protein? Yes. And I can't go wrong buying food, even if I have to trade it later because any adverse health effects show themselves. Now, how do I expect to pay for all this, with the Silver Trade? I didn't need more silver. I have enough for Deepest Storage ( to pass on down the tribe ). So this purchase is for one purpose.
*
If I become unemployed, I can sell it. I won't feel bad about cashing it in, because I bought it JUST to cover depleting my cash savings. Silver was already $50 an ounce, just a few years ago. It was $50 an ounce in 1980. If you adjust that for inflation ( at the real 7%, not the fake government 2%, and even seven is probably understating it ), silver can get to $750, and that is JUST on fear buying in a bad recession.
*
That isn't factoring in the global supply of silver declining in production, nor silver scrap declining to near zero as most of the metal is destroyed in the process of industrial production ( it is too energy intensive to recycle minute amounts, nor is it going to be financially feasible as most likely oil prices rise with precious metal increases and the subsequent fiat currency inflation ). To my mind, silver at $50 is a guarantee and $200 is no way near a gamble. All silver has to do is reach $100 in today's purchasing power and I'm breaking even.
*
That will get me my $4k back, that I spent on both the arsenal and the extra silver. While at the same time, the $2k I kept in cash ( not the bank cash, the buried cash ) is probably going to shrink drastically in value. Don't get me wrong, I've ALWAYS been worried about savings getting sodomized by inflation. Even years prior to the '08 crash ( due to the ex-wife tax, I couldn't save any money between 1992 and 2003. I was lucky I could stockpile slightly for Y2K ). But I never would have had the courage to become self employed without cash savings as unemployment insurance.
*
The problem I've always had is when I bought anything, it immediately became off limits. It was now “for the apocalypse”. I'm not talking about inventory rotation. I'm talking about anything I buy it becomes “disappeared”. If I buy ammo, it isn't to shoot the old and restock. It is, simply, upping my ammo count in total. If I had a thousand rounds and I bought a hundred, I didn't have 100 rounds to practice with. I had a apocalypse arsenal of 1100 rounds. This was now my new minimum I MUST stockpile.
*
It was hard for me to buy more silver, and NOT adding it to the Forever Stash. You don't even know HOW hard, unless you do the exact same thing. But once I made that mental adjustment, I no longer had the stress or anxiety over turning inflating dollars into hard assets. I no longer was worried I didn't have enough unemployment insurance ( but, seriously, I need to stop right NOW!!!! No more dipping into savings. I left the two grand in the most inaccessible buried spot. Hell, I had a hard time finding the stuff I buried in the basement. Even just a square yard of dirt is a lot to dig through ).
*
Why am I so convinced silver will shoot up in price? I guess I shouldn't assume everyone reading this has been following my thoughts on this previously ( apologies for those this is familiar to ). If you look over at the right side of this blog page, every day there are certain books I keep advertised from Amazon. Lucifer's Hammer ( best PA book in forever ), for instance. There is also “Scarcity”. It called for global peak silver in 2008 ( the US was in 1998 ). SRS Rocco Report calls it as 2014.

That is the Rear View Mirror. Done Deal. No Longer Theory. But, this one got away from me in length. I'll have to continue tomorrow.

  1. Alright, thanks for the explanation on how you are computing the amount of savings. I don't have the maffs skills for that and it is good to have a theoretical model.

I would still make damn sure of VITAL items. Backup water filters(Sawyer units probably your best bet) for one. No potable water and you are done.

    1. Vital was taken care of long ago. Just on water, 3 Katadyn, 4 Sawyers, pool shock powder bleach. Plus sage brush for fires ( bricks for rocket stove ) for boiling. On the list to get,one of those soy wax temperature gauges that tells you when solar power gets your water hot enough. Here is the link to those ( I can never remember their name ):

    2. My Lord,

How are you storing the pool shock?
I had to give up on it, because it destroys everything... It first ate thru the 1 lb. poly bags in a Lil' over a year. The 5 lb. bottle (plastic again) was 'bout the same as it became brittle.

I transfered the stuff to glass jars, but in 'bout 2 1/2 years the lids and rings were toast.

It's some nasty stuff alright. By the way, if you are pouring the stuff from one package into another, plan on a breezy day and stand upwind. It will 'bout kill ya as the "dust" rises. (Don't ask how I know that Lil' bit of knowledge.) :D

    3. WAPI, water pasteurization indicator. Thanks for link. Good low price tool.
What Katadyn filters do you use? Is it the candle style ceramic for a Berkey type gravity setup?

I'm in same boat right now as far as divying up any savings held in fiat. After watching and buying silver since 1987, it really seems end game is here for perhaps a permanent revaluing.

Staying prepped for battle does suck the funds. I've moved back to a revolver lately. The Bianchi speed strips that hold 5 or 6 rounds in a row carry nice and flat compared to a round speed loader. They are reasonable purchased through your Amazon link, like under $8 for a pair.

    4. I have one portable mini-unit ( bought for Y2K before I realized how damn expensive it was ) and two elements for making my own Berky. I miss the days I could steadily buy silver from the till working retail. I had a huge amount-casualty of a divorce. Now, just a few odds and ends. Had to go All In on rounds.

    5. 9:06-mine are still in the small plastic bags in the shipping cardboard. Checked a year after initial storage and they were fine. Not sure why mine is any different. Not sure how lack of humidity could be responsible.

    6. I have 2 bags of shock in a blue plastic Maxwell House container, been in there for about 4 years. Just opened it and took a look this weekend and it's find. On the underside of the lid I used a fine sharpie to write the mix recipe.

  2. "Since I now have two AR's,". Those of us who have been with a long time never thought we'd see those words. The end has arrived.

    1. Ha! Kind of took me by surprise. I've prided myself in being a contrarian on this issue. I think as the Spicy Times Civil War actually looks like it is going to happen, I had to take drastic measures. On the bright side, after that, the actual apocalypse won't be so bad.

  3. Jim, I'm assuming the 10K minimum for battle rifle ammo you suggested is for AK/AR type rifles. What would you suggest for hunting rifles in 30-06 or .308?

    1. 20k semi's, 5k bolts. But, I assume the bolt is a battle rifle. It sounds like you are asking for JUST hunting. If it won't be used against the far more populous zombies, then I'd say 500 should about do it, even passing it down a generation. Don't discount the Lee Loader, if you need to buy less factory and more reloading ( very cheap ). It can be as much as fifty cents each round, the difference between reloaded and factory, so the Lee pays for itself in 60 rounds. About a hundred, if you throw in a bullet mold.

The issue there is assuming the ones you pass it down to can shoot. Better stock another 10 or 20k rimfire for teaching the grandkids to shoot!

    1. Not a big fan of substituting rimfire for a larger gun, for training. Dynamics are completely different-weight, recoil, cheek weld. I understand what is being said, I just question the true effectiveness.

  5. Silver - good inflation hedge, especially when people start to bail out of the USD. BTW, the energy post is up.

    1. The bailing out is already underway. But oil is still the wealth focus. You know, since everyone needs it to eat. Those crafty Germans set up the crash of all their enemies by "gifting" them artificial fertilizer. Now that's thinking long term.

    2. How true! In the end, it has made overshoot possible. Fertilizer as a slingshot . . . hmmm.
