survival hermitage 14

SURVIVAL HERMITAGE 14
Shelter
Most of this book has been about the philosophy of Survival Hermitage.  The reason the majority was dedicated to that was because I’ve covered most of this practical instruction ground before, in my other books and blog articles.  RV living, practical alternate shelters ( and yes, certain unnamed loyal minions, you are indeed correct.  Alternate shelters have none of the advantages of sturdy long lasting conventional structures.  So, this article is dedicated to you ).  Frugal off grid living.  Apologies to long time readers if this last section of the book become repetitious.  New readers, permission given to glory in my greatness.
*
Okay, let me get this out of the way.  Most of you if not poor have very little disposable income.  If you are normal and want the basics, you are punished.  Want access to what is now laughingly referred to as The Best Medical Care Capitalism Can Provide?  Your medical insurance is now more than a mortgage was a mere decade ago.  Want even the most modest automobile?  They cost more than a mortgage did just thirty years ago.  None of which would be too bad, except wages haven’t increased for FIFTY years.
*
That right there is why frugal survivalism should be the only type of prepping.  Only the 9% overseer, straw boss types have seen any wage growth in real terms.  The 1% are now the equivalent of hacienda owners in Central America, untouchables leering and crapping on the Deplorable 90%.  For all my readers, and 90% of all preppers, high dollar preps are if not impossible, rather unrealistic.  And this isn’t something that can be cured by voting, because the 1% pick who we can vote for ( that is, assuming the votes even count ).  This is New Normal.
*
To survive in this brave new world, we must do certain things differently.  Nothing terribly foreign, we just need to forget the last 90 years and get our minds right that we are back in the Robber Baron era of no rights and starvation wages.  The sad thing is, THAT was an improvement for all those old timey immigrants! J You have to accept that what were once requirements ( in our lifetime ) are swiftly becoming luxuries.  And one of those luxuries were conventionally built sturdy and safe houses designed to be gifted down to our descendants.
*
The new reality is cheaper and more temporary ( and in cases of natural disaster, probably less safe to a certain degree ).  I’m not claiming that this kind of shelter is better.  It is just more in your price range.  The serfs are being gang banged in the cities, the only places there are jobs, and lucky to have anything left over to save to escape from the cities.  If you set your sights too high, such as Yuppie Scum Survivalists do, you’ll never escape.  That is why someone from, say, Idaho, gets to be a Survivalist Guru with conventional media supporting them.
*
Their message poses no threat at all because the readers will stay trapped in the debt based Ponzi scheme.  It is a testament to how effective the propaganda has been that I’m actually paid by readers to say, in effect, escape is easy if you only change your expectations.  Now I feel like that blaspheming bald bastard selling the hideously overpriced program that is just “spend less than you make”.  Talking to you, Dave, you twat.  I don’t blame your gullible readers, who are blinded by desperation.  It is all on you, buddy.
*
Just another huckster profiting off the collapse.  Anyway, I’m here to tell you to downgrade what you think of as the American Dream.  Debt does not make for nice dreams but rather nightmares.  And since nobody can time the collapse, you need to be ready sooner rather than later.  Which means you don’t have the time to save up for a conventional shelter.  Which means you accept alternate shelters with all their drawbacks.  It is what you can afford.  Now, let us discuss False Economics.  Buying twenty pairs of $10 shoes instead of one pair of $50 shoes.
*
I hear you now.  But Jim, if I build a crappy structure it falls down in a stiff breeze and I’d be better off building once with high quality.  Ah, if only it were that simple.  Number one, if the money isn’t there, it doesn’t just fall out of your ass on demand.  And no, all the tricks you used to use getting more money are breaking down with the economy.  And the economy IS breaking down, quickly.  It isn’t political. It is economic.  I keep telling you and you keep covering your ears and yammering “Fracking Forever, Fracking Forever”.
*
As each country pulls out of the PetroDollar system, our economy gets weaker.  Because one less country is buying our debt in the form of Treasury Bonds ( which were used to buy oil ).  Many times lately, we are buying our own bonds as no foreign buyers are interested.  This isn’t new, it has been going on for some time.  Accept that the economy is shrinking and you do NOT have to wait for a stock market crash.  You must Think Poor prior to actually becoming poor.  Or all your options vanish quicker than campaign promises.
*
Second there is the matter of mobility.  As the economy collapses as do all our institutions ( the FBI was always Stasi Lite, or KeyStone Kop KGB, but it is even worse now for the simple fact of Collapse ), you may have no choice but to move/rebuild again.  Against all your wishes.  Say, the county stops maintaining the road, or fighting fires.  Say that the county won’t kick out squatters right next to you ( but will have no problem arresting you when that “accidental” fire rages through their camp ).  Say that the county raises property tax indexed to inflation.
*
“But, but…they CAN’T do that!”.  Sure they can.  If a state can openly defy the federal government ( “Sanctuary State”, unconstitutional gun control ), and hump over its own workers ( pensions only 10% covered ), then a county can and will raise property tax above and beyond what state law allows.  They are already doing it.  They just levy “fees” on top of the allowable tax.  I used to work with a volunteer who sold at the top of the bubble to move away from just such a practice.  This is also affecting my parents, with more taxes than principle payment.
*
Ah, good ‘Ol Nevada.  It REALLY matters where in the state you choose to live.  There are several different areas totally unlike the others.  Each one feels like a different state.  One is a Southern Good Old Boy Sheriff shake down, another is just like Oakland, California.  Some are still cowboy paradise.  Plenty are California Yuppie Scum Oasis.  Anyway, the point is you can no longer stake a claim and expect things to last at the same level you found it.  No place is like that anymore and the time it takes to go from Nice to Craphole is shrinking.
*
Simply, you cannot bet on a conventional house and mortgage anymore, and expect it to STAY a good bet.  Next time, I’ll get into the actual shelters.

  1. re:
    mentioned-not-recommended book

In his advertisement describing his book PATRIOTS: A NOVEL..., Rawles uses the word 'thrilling'.

    I use the word 'plodding'.

Rawles is moderately-competent at compiling lists. Since Rawles claims to be religious, repeatedly carrying-on about his support of the squatters in Palestine, his idea of eternal damnation probably includes forcing your immortal soul to read and re-read his books.

Yes, I was once a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed optimist. Yes, I absorbed books by Rawles and others.

And yes, the content of PATRIOTS: A... has the potential for literary success in the hands of a skilled author.

Just because people buy something doesn't mean it's any good. One example would be televisionprogramming. Another example would be cars with computers. Another example would be American-made RecreationVehicles.

    Or dog-food from China.

Now, if the Chinese made puppy-chow called PATRIOTS: A DOG-FOOD FOR THE COMING COLLAPSE, would it make Rawles' list? His list of lists? His lists of lists?

    I bet it would.

    PS:
To truly embrace the metro-sexed life-style, one simply must say 'lists' with a straight face.

I can't. To my perpetual shame.

    1. "forcing your immortal soul to read and re-read his books" Holy everloving crap, that was funny as hell! I had to share that one with the NOL as I was busy trying to not spit on the computer screen. Priceless! Thank you for the hilarity. As the gloom deepens with the rain, I needed a daily chuckle.

  2. Following. I am in that dilemma myself, with a location suitability collapse fear. I have been in many a locale that was o.k. for a time only to turn turd world in a short period. A rv lifestyle may afford escape mobility but is system and resource availability dependant. (I like my stockpiles of gear and supplies therefore prefer fixed locations) Maybe lilly pads of multiple junk land squats in different areas as a hedged bet for the future collapse. Perhaps a minion can luck out on a small towny locale that can weather collapse storms reasonably well.

    2. Cost is the biggest issue. To keep hordes at arms length you have to have some acreage, there is no other way. How much acreage is determined by your experience. When we moved here 13 years ago 5 acres was adequate because the people on the surrounding properties were decent, had resided that for many decades. But that is changing. Early last year the folks across the road moved to larger acreage to get away from it all. The couple that moved in are from California and are in their late 30's. The neighbors to the south were very old and died about 5 years ago and the house has been vacant ever since and just sold a month ago, to a Vietnamese doctor from Indianapolis. The property behind us is owned by the neighbor to the north and is vacant field. That neighbor couple is elderly and have lived there for decades and both have health issues.

What may seem decent today will not be tomorrow, because of, people. Asshole people. And it's only going to get worse around here. I can feel it in me bones.

With that in mind, 5acres is not enough, unless you consider the long term characteristics of the surrounding properties. Like I said, it is very expensive. I wish I hd something better to say. It's unfortunate that we all, on this board, we're born about 50 years earlier.

    3. Dear Anonymous,
      re:
      'escape mobility'

      We travel extensively.
We established boondock sites at farms and ranches operated by like-minded folks. At these locations, our redundant caches are under 24/7/360 high-security.

It can be done. It merely requires decades of tribe-building.

If we had to do it over, we would start yesterday.

    4. GS-why unfortunate we were born 50 years ago? The best plan for the apocalypse is to not be there. We might just beat civilization to the grave. Or did you mean something different?

    5. There are still places that haven't been touched - my in-laws have several hundred acres, and our population keeps going down. Plus we have silo after silo of wheat.

  3. I keep coming back to the Bison 'oversized casket on stilts' shelter, a 4' high x 4' wide x 8' long box on legs with floor 4' above grade. A couple of pallets nailed below floor for storage space. Surely, some type of paint can sized heater can be cobbled up for minimal heat. Site this under cover from cold prevailing winter wind and southern slope to gather as much heat during winter months, a person could feel safe. Especially with other's nearby in same type of shelter.

    2. It sounds to me as if the minion at 10:36 is almost referring to the “Bum Box” as described in rancho costa nada? (See pic below. It’s the first photo at the top left. I don’t see any stilts in this photo, but I do seem to recall some mention of them somewhere in the story?)

    3. Perhaps the poster is referring to the elevated "bum box" that the guy from Rancho Costa Nada described in his e-book?

    4. In my neck of the woods houses were traditionally built on stilts to facilitate airflow.

A bum box on stilts would be good. In winter it wouldn't take much to block airflow.

    5. Ah durn it, you are correct fellow Anons. The stilts was off of Rancho Costa Nada book, sorry for the confusion. When typing the 1st, I wondered why I could picture it - I have a hard copy of the book and re-read it from time to time.

  4. Bison,
Bad news. I promised a refund transfer to your PayPal from a matchmaking conglomerate called ConscienceDatingNetwork. The corporate includes AscendingHearts, GreenSingles, SpiritualSingles, and others.

I just received notification they are unwilling to honor their customer commitment. Despite all their pretentious woo-woo blather, they fail to understand the law of karma.

Here's the best part about retaliation:
I don't have to do a thing. The universe will snap a towel across their heinies at their worst time. And yet, I get zero enjoyment from the hole they dug.

Ethically, morally, I cannot recommend disrespecting customers.

    PS:
This is a new century. Men wear dresses, dope-smokers invigorate a vibrant downtown, goofballs evacuate their bowels on sidewalks. Accordingly, I can say 'heinies' anytime I want... and everybody has to tolerate my specialness.

    It's in the rules. Someplace.

I suspect we're closer to go time than even the most pessimistic of us thinks. We're just waiting for the trigger that kicks it all off. The proverbial Serbian if you will (I'm listening to Hard Core History podcast about the First World War... wowsers what a mess.

  6. As a long-time Nevadan, specifically what counties and/or general town/geographical areas have what you believe to be the ideal combination of characteristics to set up a low-budget homestead at? I mean for both right now, and your opinion of projected future doom.
    Peace out

    1. I would stay on the eastern side because of rainfall. Stay well north of Vegas, but be wary of Ely because of the prison. Wherever it is, you need to have a natural year round above ground water source. Not trying to reinforce my choice of Elko retroactively, but I still feel it is one of the better choices. I don't like its population, but these little 1-5k population counties you'll need to bring an income. And beware not all counties are as liberal with the zoning. If you stay within the Humbolt corridor, the further west the milder the winters.
