A decent, even if flawed in some aspects like all the rest, survival plan would mimic the Appalachian hillbillies.  A remote and inaccessible area, poor in agricultural land coveted by centralized states, inhabited by clannish insular families completely divorced from the money economy, so poor that a Great Depression is just another morning scratching by like their chickens.  They can feed themselves, and not much more.  The Rawles Plan pretends to copy this but fails in spirit and detail.  They have the remote, uncoveted lands down, but nothing else.  The lands are too parched, and getting more parched by the decade, they share nothing amongst themselves but religion ( family ties are far more important, the religion just being superglue to that structure-as well as a coping mechanism ) which is too frail given the post-oil distances between villages involved, and most importantly, they are stupid addicted to money.  It is the Mammon reliance that is so dangerous, even more so than their Yuppie Scum-ness ( addiction to luxury ).  Poor people have coping mechanisms you only learn in the school of hard knocks.  You don’t learn that from books or consultants.  Preppers can’t cope after money goes away, even if they pretend money is preparing them.

A Malthusian Prepper is a survivalist who understands the worst is going to happen-massive die-off of the 99%+ scale since overpopulation has already far surpassed food supply.  The last time this happened, several decades ago, abundance of petroleum enabled us to stage the Green Revolution.  Before, petroleum inputs went to replacing human labor with machines.  Then, we started putting even more petroleum into denuded soil and by irrigating dry lands.  The Green Revolution only had marginal seed manipulation involved.  It was a one time shot to mask over overpopulation and even now has been unraveling for several years as petroleum supplies have been contracting ( both as in gross amounts pumped and as net energy used to extract remaining supplies ).  Several factors mitigate these negative trends.  First, far more wars are underway, providing a safety valve in the way of removing starving mouths.  Cold War energy surplus weapons are now being used in an orgy of fighting as the most marginal, food deficit, most draught effected regions are the first to see imported foodstuffs endangered and that resource control contested.  Second, right now what we are seeing is not a plunge in energy supplies but a plunge in delivered net BTU’s.  The energy flow is the same, even if more is being diverted to pump and process that energy in the first place.  The shortages are not critical, not yet, since the first energy use to go is the luxury sector.

*

Third, after starving marginal populations and marginal money sectors, the economic machine which provides credit to keep the international trade alive which delivers food from depopulated countrysides crawling with agriculture machines to overcrowded urban populations is being kept alive by cannibalization.  The financial sector is grossly corrupt and grossly inefficient, but without it food wouldn’t be able to be transported to the teeming mouths.  And we all know that the financial mammoth has not long for this earth.  It is a zombie structure even now.  The smart survivalist knows this and divorced himself from it to the extent possible.  The prepper stays in its warm embrace and endangers himself.

  1. "The lands are too parched, and getting more parched by the decade"

I think you nailed that one.

Also, there are a lot of catastrophes that money can help with. Given a choice, you would rather have money, than not have it. But the lack of helpful support (family) is going to undo a lot of folks in a lot of scenarios.

    1. I'm certainly not saying the West isn't viable to some degree-I'm here, after all. But most folks here are beholden to a generous FedGov investing/maintaining all the centralized water collection points. Not sure how many noodle through the implications, even/especially in the Redoubt.

    1. What is the meaning of life?
How can I find true love?
Gee, ask many hard questions lately?
No one's family is helpful. The spouse refuses both help, support and money and everyone else is mocking and sabatages you. Here is your answer: "HUMP them!" Hump every last one of them. You forge ahead, and don't waste time on permission, pity, a pat on the back or listening to idiots bloviating in your ear ( kind of like I keep writing my blog ). They don't exist. Obviously, the devil is in the details, which makes things harder. But zero hour approaches my brother, and you are now forced to do twice as much with half the tools, and quicker. As things get worse, people resist more. Expect it. And good luck.

    3. Do what you need to do.
Don't let them know the full extent- or any at all about it if you can.
You do not need to go all sneaky or anything, just figure out where you can put things that they wont go investigate.
Spend your own money, and such free funds you had been spending on luxuries, on prep things instead.
DONT make the mistake of going towards a lot of firearms right away. A single firearm and thousand or so rounds (stored away safely) is more than enough until you have 7+ years worth of EVERYTHING else.
But it really depends on your situation. If you are under 18 you cant buy junk land without parental permission, but if you are an adult, you certainly can incorporate an LLC (a couple hundred dollars) and purchase the junk land in that name, stop by it briefly every time you can find an excuse, improve it a little and store some stuff. Etc. Etc.
DONT ask permission but DO compromise if they have any objection - them :"You aren't spending enough time with the kids" -You " Okay, the kids and I will go out fly kits, and shoot sling shots at an empty lot (your junk land) that the owners wont mind us using."
-Them " quit spending money on stupid stuff" -You " I guess we can both cut back from our hobbies and shop more conservatively " (trust me you point out something they like to do to cut back on they will either blow up or back off).

  4. Suffer economic collapse early and avoid the rush! Works for me.

I keep coming back to my home area here in the mountains of rural northern NH. That's where my extended family is, and family is family. Some of us know how to survive on tree bark and bugs. Hard times are not new.

One thing we don't know is how all those millions of "surplus" people are going to adapt. Many will drop like flies, just because the world the knew changed. Others will figure things out we can't even guess at yet. One thing for sure, the old economy is going to die a messy death. I'm watching that now.

    1. I think we all grew up with the economy being slowly strangled, and it was natural. What we are seeing now is all the old work-arounds no longer working, which astounds us, and the velocity increasing exponentially, which scares us. "It" is definitely On.
