LACHESISM
Lachesism is the desire
to be struck by disaster. You won't find anything on Wikipedia about
the word. Surprisingly, YouTube is chockablock full on the subject,
even subtracting the music videos. I found it by accident watching a
movie analysis, “The Freedom We Find In Chaos And Disaster”. In
that video they cover the films “Fight Club” and the new “Joker”,
plus TV's “Breaking Bad”. Watching the analysis might explain
why we enjoyed those shows so much ( I haven't seen “Joker”, nor
do I plan to. It seems a show one would need to follow up with
whiskey to drown the despair and helplessness. Reality is bad enough
).
*
I might be butchering
the synopsis, but Fight Club is described as a tale of searching for
lost masculinity, the embracing of chaos and disaster being an
agreeable price. Breaking Bad was the ending of ones self-imposed
limitations through the freedom impending death brings. And wouldn't
we all love to be the main character in either of those shows? Of
course, the narrator makes the point that disaster imposed upon us
might bring psychological break down before freedom, and a better
alternative is to change ones self voluntarily.
*
And that makes sense,
as a desire for disaster is ones way of being lazy, of being weak,
unable to shed life's BS through discipline and hard work. And we
have all been there, haven't we? Wishing the collapse to hurry up
and arrive, to strip away all the bullcrap and level the playing
field for the serfs. Because let's face it, changing yourself to the
point of freedom is just a nail sticking up waiting to be hammered.
Society does not allow that level of individuality.
*
Oh, we can blow smoke
up our own asses and pretend to be free, but deep down you know it
isn't so. No society survives without imposed conformity. Not any
agricultural society. Even as a tribal warrior, much, much freer
than any beet farmer will ever be, conformity is imposed by the
threat of violence. A tribe of monkey's cannot do otherwise. In the
long run, females must breed and males must die. Individual desires
have nothing to do with it, even though that self same society if
successful, doesn't leave the impression any of these actions wasn't
voluntary.
*
Let's take today's
bared freedom to its logical conclusion. Do you own your own home?
Of course not. Can you hurt anyone that threatens your home or
business. Of course not. Are you allowed to kill the rapist who
attacked your wife, sister or daughter. Nope. You are not free, and
to embrace any of these freedoms means your death or incarceration.
Now, come the apocalypse, that bullcrap goes right out the window.
You are not only free to roam the country ( airline ad reference ),
you can smite all the asswhores in your area of operation. Now THAT,
my fine feathered minions, is freedom.
*
And before you say
something stupid, like, long range sniping of innocents is murder and
you will be brought to trial once normalcy returns, just stop. Don't
embarrass yourself. Here is reality 101. Here is Post Oil Age rule
of law. Might makes right. That is how government works, but you
are so deranged from living in a society that cages you behind fools
gold plated bars and you think you are free that you cannot
understand the basics of power. If you never even think about
infringing on the elites power or wealth, you are then free to do
anything else you want.
*
Do you think those in
charge care about you collecting their fiat currency in whatever
amount you desire? Of course not. It is paper and ink. It is not
wealth, nor is it power ( you need both to have either ). But since
everyone thinks they are free because they have that paper, they
remain docile and satisfied. But to return to those freaks
advocating fear of the returning law after the apocalypse, A) those
with the power are the law and B) who in the Sam Hill do you think is
riding in to rescue you after the apocalypse?
*
Why would you think
that there is any hope after the collapse? Do you not understand how
declining energy works? Do you think that the soil is as ever
lasting as your fracking fuel, able to be exploited forever? Deplete
the soil and run out of energy and your entire infrastructure is
gone, including all the enforcement personnel that energy enabled.
Are you worried a new local warlord arises and smites all the evil
doers? Is this a 1950's TV western? Jesus weeps, man, more likely
the sniper is recruited into the warlords army. Does no one remember
Ruby Ridge? You don't get any more blatantly corrupt and evil of law
enforcement, and what was their punishment?
*
You only get punished
if you endanger the rulers wealth or power. He cares what happened
prior to his seizing power, why? Sure, if he needs a PRETEXT. But
you do understand, do you not, that pretext can be invented as
necessary? You don't even have to do anything wrong to be punished.
Just as evil is only punished as desired. Wishes are for genies,
hope is for children and desires are for women's romance books. You
can WISH for a return to Business As Usual, even though that has been
dead for near three generations, but wishes ain't fishes.
*
Freedom is from the
same place power is, from the point of a gun. You cannot gain much
freedom today, as the ability to use a gun is still retained by
nation states. You can still live in self imposed isolation, in your
mountain redoubt or your ignored ghetto, as free as the surrounding
powers allow you to be, but in large part you are only as free as
they agree to ignore you or as much as your existence helps them (
ie, ghetto criminals jack up the price of their drugs, and cower the
citizens into welcoming a police state. Or, the rebels allow the
military industrial complex to profit ).
*
This is not to say the
nation state isn't obsolete and completely dysfunctional. It is.
But as long as its resources remain ( and that means oil, fracking
fanboy. You think it is Happy Motoring, but rather it is the Spice
that allows our rulers to subjugate you ), it will limp along a bit
longer. The collapse of that system IS liberating. It IS freedom.
The freedom to fight for power, the freedom to eliminate those who
oppose you, be they remnants of the old order such as former cops or
former ruling communists, or new upstarts wishing to enslave you. I
don't see a whole lot wrong with wishing for that.
*
What are we, chimps
groveling in the dirt screeching in agony as the Sky God appears ( an
eclipse ), willing to kill any of the group that dare suggest its
appearance is a good thing? How superstitious are we, still, that we
musn't name the god least he appear? What is this, the movie
Bettlejuice? Wishing for disaster will still get you attacked and
ostracized. Wishing don't make crap happen, you moronic toads. Just
as you cannot wish for fame or wealth, you cannot wish bad juju on
people either. Your insignificance is magnificent is its supremacy.
Nothing you want or need will move the universe in the slightest.
*
Where are you going?
I'm not done abusing you. More tomorrow.

True dat. There is no longer an ability to be the stoic libertarian free patriot beard boy "my rights" operator. It is impossible not be owned or controlled by the various beast systems. A Minions existence in amongst the various constructs of the systems is a defacto a collar and leash upon your continued functioning in that society realm. Unless able to be totally dropped off from the systems controls, i.e. full on Galt/Ted K and be sequestered hermitaged deeply there is not a way to escape those control structures.
ReplyDeleteEveryone prepping and spouting off for a Boogaloo to have carte blanche freedom festivities is naive and playing fantasy sports type thinking. There may be a chaos window of opportunity for some monkeywrench low scale exercising of freedoms, that however is a fleeting anomoly and things will eventually return to even more stern and rigid control systems. People as a mass of animals need control features no matter how draconian, as they evolved way past and lost the dna/instinct animal independance capabilities. We are all now "stock", like in an animal husbandry operation.
Just be the firstest to the feed chutes to ensure getting your crumbs, and then lay back as much from the exits to delay your eventual cull and harvesting. As depicted in the boxcar scene from Dr. Zhivago "the rest of you are just cattle".
I can't believe I never watched "Dr Zhivago". I mean, granted, other films had boobs and bullets, so there is that.
DeleteHomework study project. Watching it with Popcorn and snuggly suits on a cold night.
DeleteNever watched Zhivago??
DeleteDamn. You're a certified heathen. I suppose you didn't watch Lean's other masterpieces, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge of River Kwai and others.
Go rent Zhivago & Lawrence and compare the wide angle landscape shots.
The train passing through snow covered Siberia and the bleak desert during Lawrence's near suicidal rescue of the Arab boy after being left behind by caravan.
Cinematic glory.
I've watched Bridge and Lawrence, each at least three times. If I knew the same guy did "Zhivago", I'd have watched it decades ago. I just thought it was a love story
DeleteWhen it played at my parents theater. It ran for a month and I was the projectionist. So I knew the film intimately, all thirteen , twenty minute reels of it !
DeleteThis was when I was in my early teens. Wasn't until later in life that I understood the historical value of the film.
My foray into projectionist ended in dismal failure. I told them I wasn't comfortable with doing it, but they insisted. The boss wasn't too pleased when the theater full got refunds. Not sure why, as they had already bought the soda and popcorn, and he owned all of the towns "competitors". I didn't get fired, but they never made that mistake again. When I tell people I'm completely non-mechanical, they can't understand the words coming out of my mouth. I could splice and repair, but just couldn't get the machine fed properly. This was early 90's, during Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven". A great job, except that night. I saw a butt ton of free movies that year. T2, The Bodyguard, etc. Then the kids came along.
DeleteI started running projectors when I was ten yrs old.
DeleteHad to stand on two coke bottle crates , in order to reach the dowser bar that lets the light out.
Did the duty from age ten till eighteen and ran to the nearest recruitment office lol...
I could thread the film in less than fifteen seconds, without even looking. Of course that fast ...it likely wouldn't be in frame ha ha...
Lots of adventures at those two drive inns and three indoor theatre's. More than a few times , I'd wake up from a sound sleep with many car horns honking cuz the screen went white....
You should have seen me when they issued me the M-60. The M-16 of course they had us working on many times. Muscle memory on that one. The Pig? Once, in Basic we disassembled. Five years later before I touch it again. No idea how to load, clear a jam, clean, etc. The Army assuming you are taught once and it is memory locked. Morons. Mechanically, I am near hopeless.
DeleteNew Boss will be same as old boss. Perhaps with the "Greater Idaho" state borders realignment movement there may be a different flavor of power controlling
ReplyDeletethat region. Jim's I-80 interstate and rail corridor should be absorbed and integrated by northern powers during a collapse vacuum. (Strategic expansion and resource capture will be needed) No different really being Ruled by theocracy facists in Boise rather than lady brigade communists in Carson City.
Maybe that will stave off the more immediate local Elko threat of those Nueter vans (plain white vans of course) ambushing Jim while bicycling and gelding him in the back compartment. Reparations for the past misogynistic injustices, and ensuring more docile eunuchs in the new Nevada. Be looking over the shoulder, ((they)) really are after you.
You know, I didn't even consider it until you mentioned the rail corridor, but now I wonder if the lack of bulk goods to China kills the railroad here economically.
DeleteNope, there is enough domestic rail cross traffic and spur routing needs to make its value even more so during a crunch or power struggle. There is probably a lot of other assets (pipelines, utilities, data cables, etc) that align with or hug rail and interstate corridors. Plus their attendant maintence crews and infrastucture gear. I think borders on maps will not be the straight engineer lines, but curvy ones like europe from simple land grabs for assets. Like pushing out control to the ocean for deep sea ports so as to not be surrounded or starved-embargoed into defeat. Incorporate the strategy thinking with your Minion Militia strike force chums at next weeks rendevous meeting.
DeleteGreat, now I'll have to go all Lawrence to keep out the Turks.
DeleteYou mention railroading.
DeleteSpeaking of ruined transportation... DUCK!
"California bureaucrats retirement 'system' is operated by a chinese spy".
CalPERS is more bankrupt than advertised, needs to borrow another half-trillion to 'stay solvent' through 2020.
Is it just me, or is borrowing the opposite of solvency?
Well, maybe California bureaucrats in charge of infinite growth shouldn't invest all their seizure cash in chinese front companies.
Shucks, even I know better than that.
But, then again, they probably recognize their similarities, joined at the hip and all.
Elko ought to have low exposure to desperate California bureaucrats fleeing the remainder of this collapse.
Here in Oregon, we might anticipate more new neighbors, driving their nifty Toyota Pree-us automobiles and voting to ruin the place further by 'better living through government'.
Until they discover our secret weapon... thousands of marijuana dispensaries.
Suckers.
I've been telling ya to rustle up some of those BLM ponies.
DeletePut together a remuda of 3 or 4 and a khafeiya to wrap around around your head and you too can ride into Carson City (Yanbu) from the desert.
On to Aqaba, oh Emir of the minion horde !!
FYI..."horde" is derived from a Turkish word.
LM-the lunatics are in charge of the asylum.
Delete*
Anon()()-Turkish, labeling the Mongols? I'm asking, not sure but something is tickling my memory
Apparently a turk word word referencing 'Urdu' ...language (people?) of present day Pakistan.
DeleteI'm pretty sure Mongolic-Turkic nomads that predate the 13th C had a term for a horde that sounded like 'Urdu'. Probably 1000 years of nomadic raiders before Genghis got the boys together for a ride, you know
Just an old Mongolic-Turkic loan word is my guess.
Hell, it's hard enough for me to keep track of the English language :)
Delete"Fight Club is described as a tale of searching for lost masculinity".....Uh, no. It's just a homo-erotic film. C'mon Jim catch the drift my man!
ReplyDeleteSweaty, good looking, physically fit guys engaged in rough play all the while keeping secrets ('first rule of fight club is don't talk...). Geez, that went whoosh...right over your head of glorious hair. Duh.
"Do you think that the soil is as ever lasting as your fracking fuel, able to be exploited forever?"...I really wish you would pick up a book on soil science. You're comparing apples & oranges, literally. Soil is a dynamic web of life processes ...oil...oil has been the same unchanging chemical mix for, oh I don't know, a million years maybe.
We can restore and rehabilitate some of the most abused soil within a decade. It's amenable.
"The collapse of that system IS liberating. It IS freedom. The freedom to fight for power..."
No, that's just Nietzschian nihilism. Only neebish neckbeards still believe that stuff. That shit died, deservedly so, in a Berlin bunker in May 1945.
C'mon Jim, come toward the light...
"Even as a tribal warrior, much, much freer than any beet farmer will ever be..."
Now you've gone way damn too far. Stop picking on beet farmers. On behalf of beet farmers (& carrot, turnip, rutabaga farmers) just back off. As for potatoes...well go ahead. Just throw them in the oven.....400 degrees for 45 minutes. Slathered in BUTTER, baco-bits & sour cream makes them tolerable.
Read "Dirt".

You won't feel so secure in our ability to restore denuded farmland. Fighting for freedom is not Nietchian, it is RealPolitic.
Uh, you know 'Realpolitik' is NOT at all about freedom, right?
DeleteFrom Wikipedia: "The term Realpolitik is sometimes used pejoratively to imply politics that are perceived as coercive, amoral, or Machiavellian."
Something tells me that doesnt sound like freedom.
"The term Realpolitik was coined by Ludwig von Rochau, a German writer and politician in the 19th century."
Those 19th C German political types regarded freedom as dangerous and unstable. The whole
raison d'être of German political thought was about centralized state control and rigid ORDER.
Bismark was a 'realpolitik' man. Look what he did.
I use the term as nation states fighting against each other for control, which amounted to the freedom to act as they wished. In the near future, post-collapse, tribes must act as nation states. And only from a position of strength do you have the freedom from coercion.
DeleteNatural gas and oil pipelines run through a lot of areas very much unbeknownst to many. The maps of which is in use and existence now is interesting, contrary to protesters all of the sudden getting bent now. There is like a nasty warfare going on in donbass ukraine and syria right now over controls of such terrain and resource assets. By proxy outsiders which may bring in foreign interests in your boogaloo festivities. Everywhere will be contested turf, stay low.
ReplyDeleteTaking on more importance as the oil/gas run out
DeleteBe careful how much you believe of Montgomery's work, he is a raving liberal from UC Berkeley.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't perfect, but I usually have a pretty decent BS detector with books. I've read this one twice now, if not three times. One of my Go To's. I can smell Jared Diamond's PC BS, but never detected that with Montgomery
DeleteJoker was okay. I walked out liking it, but after thinking about it for 90 or so days, it is in the long-term "meh" category. The fact that it's a good movie for 2019 tells you more about 2019 than it does about The Joker.
ReplyDeleteNow, The Gentlemen was a good show. And it proved your secondary point - freedom is for those that can enforce it.
I could watch Joker for free-I leech off the stepdaughters Amazon, and she bought the digital copy. Still don't want to though.
DeleteJoker was phenomenal IMHO
DeleteMy only complaint is the scene where he delivers justice to Murray. The speech, tweeked just a little would have made it into one of the all time greats IMHO. My tweek with a minor tweek earlier in the film .....
OK here's my tweek. Early in the film when the Joker cops a hiding from some youth thugs. If it had Murray Or even better the father of Bruce Wayne turning a visible blind eye to the Joker lying on the ground in pain. Not focused on Murray / Wayne but more of an easter egg if you will.
Onto the speech. Just tweeked a little to mention it right near the end as a reply to Murray saying it's BS that society treats rich people better than poor. Then just before the big scene "You know what the powerful in society get when they ignore the powerless? You get what's coming to you"
It might be great. I've delayed watching movies before and they turned out to surprise me. You almost have to think the ad to the thing was done poorly.
DeleteIf this is something other than an outlier, we are so screwed:
ReplyDeleteLonger incubation periods?
Henan province in central China has reported two coronavirus cases that took much longer to confirm than the previously estimated incubation period of up to 14 days. Incubation is the time between exposure to the virus and beginning to show symptoms.
The government of Xinxian county, in the city of Xinyang, on Sunday reported that one of its new cases had been confirmed 34 days after the patient returned from a mid-January visit to Wuhan. He had been sent to hospital with suspected symptoms on January 28, but twice tested negative before testing positive on February 16. A further two people who attended family gatherings with the man in Xinxian were reported as infected, while three were suspected cases or under hospital quarantine.
The county government announced it would extend the home quarantine period from 14 to 21 days for residents who had been to Hubei or had contact with people who had been there.
It also reported a case that was confirmed 94 days after the patient’s contact with a relative from Hubei. The patient had taken care of his father-in-law, who arrived from Wuhan on November 13 and died days later. The son-in-law continued to stay in the father-in-law’s house until January 31. However, the government statement said the origin of the son-in-law’s infection had yet to be identified.
from:
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3050893/coronavirus-death-toll-rises-1770-china-reports-100-new
Not to downplay the thing, but the tests have proven to be very poor, and there aren't enough of them. This might have something to do with the seemingly long incubation. That said, I'm still worried. I just don't know how much
DeleteI have read about a Coronavirus case in China that had a 24 day incubation period. But they had some evidence that the person was infected a second time at 10 days. There is some evidence that a quarantine should be 21 days, not just 14 days.
DeleteUnfortunately, for all infected people who recover, there seems to be evidence that the second infection is worse than the first. This is due to a cytokine storm in the body. This was thought to be true in the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919 where the second wave was worse than the first.
In most infections, your body creates antibodies that are good at fighting a second infection. This is how vaccines work. But with SARS, MERS and possibly with Covid-19, if you get a mutated variety of the virus in a second infection, your body may actually help increase the infection rather than reduce it.
Peak Prosperity Dude in last nights video was saying the original "quarantine" derived from Italian "forty", as in forty days to be effective.
DeleteAn old friend that I worked with in an R&D lab developing reverse osmosis membranes sent me this link.
