LACHESISM

Lachesism is the desire to be struck by disaster. You won't find anything on Wikipedia about the word. Surprisingly, YouTube is chockablock full on the subject, even subtracting the music videos. I found it by accident watching a movie analysis, “The Freedom We Find In Chaos And Disaster”. In that video they cover the films “Fight Club” and the new “Joker”, plus TV's “Breaking Bad”. Watching the analysis might explain why we enjoyed those shows so much ( I haven't seen “Joker”, nor do I plan to. It seems a show one would need to follow up with whiskey to drown the despair and helplessness. Reality is bad enough ).

I might be butchering the synopsis, but Fight Club is described as a tale of searching for lost masculinity, the embracing of chaos and disaster being an agreeable price. Breaking Bad was the ending of ones self-imposed limitations through the freedom impending death brings. And wouldn't we all love to be the main character in either of those shows? Of course, the narrator makes the point that disaster imposed upon us might bring psychological break down before freedom, and a better alternative is to change ones self voluntarily.

And that makes sense, as a desire for disaster is ones way of being lazy, of being weak, unable to shed life's BS through discipline and hard work. And we have all been there, haven't we? Wishing the collapse to hurry up and arrive, to strip away all the bullcrap and level the playing field for the serfs. Because let's face it, changing yourself to the point of freedom is just a nail sticking up waiting to be hammered. Society does not allow that level of individuality.

Oh, we can blow smoke up our own asses and pretend to be free, but deep down you know it isn't so. No society survives without imposed conformity. Not any agricultural society. Even as a tribal warrior, much, much freer than any beet farmer will ever be, conformity is imposed by the threat of violence. A tribe of monkey's cannot do otherwise. In the long run, females must breed and males must die. Individual desires have nothing to do with it, even though that self same society if successful, doesn't leave the impression any of these actions wasn't voluntary.

Let's take today's bared freedom to its logical conclusion. Do you own your own home? Of course not. Can you hurt anyone that threatens your home or business. Of course not. Are you allowed to kill the rapist who attacked your wife, sister or daughter. Nope. You are not free, and to embrace any of these freedoms means your death or incarceration. Now, come the apocalypse, that bullcrap goes right out the window. You are not only free to roam the country ( airline ad reference ), you can smite all the asswhores in your area of operation. Now THAT, my fine feathered minions, is freedom.

And before you say something stupid, like, long range sniping of innocents is murder and you will be brought to trial once normalcy returns, just stop. Don't embarrass yourself. Here is reality 101. Here is Post Oil Age rule of law. Might makes right. That is how government works, but you are so deranged from living in a society that cages you behind fools gold plated bars and you think you are free that you cannot understand the basics of power. If you never even think about infringing on the elites power or wealth, you are then free to do anything else you want.

Do you think those in charge care about you collecting their fiat currency in whatever amount you desire? Of course not. It is paper and ink. It is not wealth, nor is it power ( you need both to have either ). But since everyone thinks they are free because they have that paper, they remain docile and satisfied. But to return to those freaks advocating fear of the returning law after the apocalypse, A) those with the power are the law and B) who in the Sam Hill do you think is riding in to rescue you after the apocalypse?

Why would you think that there is any hope after the collapse? Do you not understand how declining energy works? Do you think that the soil is as ever lasting as your fracking fuel, able to be exploited forever? Deplete the soil and run out of energy and your entire infrastructure is gone, including all the enforcement personnel that energy enabled. Are you worried a new local warlord arises and smites all the evil doers? Is this a 1950's TV western? Jesus weeps, man, more likely the sniper is recruited into the warlords army. Does no one remember Ruby Ridge? You don't get any more blatantly corrupt and evil of law enforcement, and what was their punishment?

You only get punished if you endanger the rulers wealth or power. He cares what happened prior to his seizing power, why? Sure, if he needs a PRETEXT. But you do understand, do you not, that pretext can be invented as necessary? You don't even have to do anything wrong to be punished. Just as evil is only punished as desired. Wishes are for genies, hope is for children and desires are for women's romance books. You can WISH for a return to Business As Usual, even though that has been dead for near three generations, but wishes ain't fishes.

Freedom is from the same place power is, from the point of a gun. You cannot gain much freedom today, as the ability to use a gun is still retained by nation states. You can still live in self imposed isolation, in your mountain redoubt or your ignored ghetto, as free as the surrounding powers allow you to be, but in large part you are only as free as they agree to ignore you or as much as your existence helps them ( ie, ghetto criminals jack up the price of their drugs, and cower the citizens into welcoming a police state. Or, the rebels allow the military industrial complex to profit ).

This is not to say the nation state isn't obsolete and completely dysfunctional. It is. But as long as its resources remain ( and that means oil, fracking fanboy. You think it is Happy Motoring, but rather it is the Spice that allows our rulers to subjugate you ), it will limp along a bit longer. The collapse of that system IS liberating. It IS freedom. The freedom to fight for power, the freedom to eliminate those who oppose you, be they remnants of the old order such as former cops or former ruling communists, or new upstarts wishing to enslave you. I don't see a whole lot wrong with wishing for that.

What are we, chimps groveling in the dirt screeching in agony as the Sky God appears ( an eclipse ), willing to kill any of the group that dare suggest its appearance is a good thing? How superstitious are we, still, that we musn't name the god least he appear? What is this, the movie Bettlejuice? Wishing for disaster will still get you attacked and ostracized. Wishing don't make crap happen, you moronic toads. Just as you cannot wish for fame or wealth, you cannot wish bad juju on people either. Your insignificance is magnificent is its supremacy. Nothing you want or need will move the universe in the slightest.
