THANKS FOR THE FISH

note: my apologies.  The Walking Dead starts on Netflix the 15th, not the 5th.  The previews go by so fast it was hard to read.  Hopefully you had all forgot and I was the only one disappointed.

There is going the come the day, and more than likely very shortly, where we all give a hearty high-ho, so long and thanks for all the fish!  Our empire is done and gone but nobody understands that nor can imagine in their deepest most hideous nightmares what that means, the denial and hubris thick on the ground.  The British empire signed its death warrant by insisting on fighting WWI, having nothing to do with bayoneted babies in Belgium and everything to do with imperial mastery of the globe and economic dominance.  Almost a million Tommy’s died for that, with more from the Dominion countries.  The American empire ended in Vietnam, which lucky for a lot of the poor youth “only” killed sixty thousand.  They could have been one of the HALF MILLION who died to secure the empire in the first place ( the combined two world wars ).  So at least we lost our empire without shedding more blood than what it cost to acquire, which the Brits can’t say.  Of course, we aren’t out of the running yet and who knows the nuclear war toll, but as far as losing the war, not the follow up conflicts after our decline, we got off lucky.

Empires are not inherently evil.  In most cases if you do not offensively try to establish your own another one will destroy you on its way to dominance.  When all the chickens in the yard are trying to be queen, one or two is bound to get pecked severely.  The Chinese are quick to point out how poorly the Japanese treated them, then do the same thing-even if not to the same degree of horrid-to Tibet.  Teachers, politicians, historians and diplomats all get job security highlighting their peoples grievances and minimizing their poor behavior towards other groups.  But, a tribe or a nation state or an empire, groups all act the same, the way human nature programmed us, to be opportunistic predators.  To claim a female patrol officer is as aggressive and effective at keeping the peace as a male ( which is only true as compared to our feminized males and our general population’s reduced hormonal aggressiveness due to our diets ), to pretend one empire is evil and the other benign, to think war is an aberration rather than a means of survival for our species, all this just ignores human nature and makes the claimant look rather foolish.

The thing about empires is that the citizen benefits, and he cares not a whit that citizens from the defeated country suffered to make his empire.  We all glory in the treasure shared ( even if we whine our share has been severely curtailed, at least we had a surplus that can be taken away ).  What you American imperial subjects love to forget is that while we had-past tense-plentiful resources, we also took those from others AND scoured the globe for more.  What, you think the conquered indigenous population handed you the timber and coal and oil because they didn’t farm or mine but instead hunted?  We took all the resources, and we killed off the opposition.  That is how empires are born.  They aren’t made by god fearing White folk looking upon an empty land and adding their labor to gods bounty to create wealth.  It is just a resource theft from one group by another.  Indian tribe A took from tribe B who had gotten it from tribe C, and then the French or British or Spanish took it from tribe A and then the Americans took it and then the Yankees grabbed it and right now as we speak the historical process continues and soon the northeast coast blue blood elites will lose the resources to someone else.

All the bounty your great grandparents enjoyed and your parents inherited and you got a small portion of but now have lost as the system deteriorates, that was just imperial booty.  All that political intrigue you think will start the next war?  It is just the cycles of empires.  The South China Sea?  Old hat.  The German Pacific colonies were parceled out at Versailles,  Oz and New Zealand getting a few south and the Japanese getting all those north of the equator.  Which we then took from the Japanese.  The Japs took the Philippines we had taken from Spain which we took back but then lost political control of.  Japan got parts of China after WWI, wanted more, then tried to colonize her just as America, Germany Britain and others had already done ( the US Navy was in China for decades-kind of like Afghanistan and the Army ).  Britain could have kept Japan as an ally as it had in the first war, in which case all of her colonies would have been legitimized rather than painted as evil occupation, but rather tied her wagon to American which merely hastened her demise as a world power.  Today the Philippines has completely rejected America as an ally, turned to China instead who had tried to first help Vietnam against the US, then tried to occupy her, and today uses her as we do as another labor source for goods which hastens our demise economically.  So, for now, China is de facto controller of the South China sea, strategically vital to her, and while we bloviate as if we still ruled the world and think we do so.

A huge ass cargo container hit’s a US warship, as if radar suddenly went back to not being invented.  Chinese subs surface undetected in the middle of our battle groups.  Cheap missiles were taking out naval ships thirty years ago, and missiles get better as vessels get more expensive than our economies can afford.  We cannibalize nuclear missiles to keep a shrinking number ready-in theory.  We borrow half our yearly budget to keep losing at a guerrilla war in the middle east as our former enemies and allies alike form new economic coalitions.  We rely on half of our oil from unstable countries seeing eight percent production reductions annually.  Our bankers keep extending their exposure, increasing the amount of leverage they gamble with, just to stay bankruptcy.  You know, I know, and Ross Perot knows that it is all over but the fat lady singing.  We sit back, remain content with less of everything every year, and wait the final curtain.  With no encores.   All our attention is wasted with kabuki theatre spectacles of Potemkin villages undergoing the illusion of repair.  We remain focused on the accomplishments decades past ( “we could colonize space“-sorry, that was 49 years ago.  “We can arm ourselves with modern arms”-44 years ago the M16 was issued.  “We are energy independent”-46 years ago we saw peak production ).

Our empire enriched the peasants as no other throughout history.  At the height of her wealth Rome was enjoying the energy surplus of slaves, a large portion of her population unable to share in the bounty.  But the US had petroleum slaves and even the dumbest box of rocks living in the ghetto popping out spawn to add to her paycheck has large TV’s, microwave fried chicken and central heat and air, probably legal pot and couldn’t imagine deprivation if it slapped the bitch upside her head.  Which is why prepping is such a joke.  The majority of people see nothing but luxury surrounding them and believe all is well, leaving people like me looking like dirty bearded homeless guys waiving signs about the end being nigh.  At MOST, your preppers, so called, merely extend their lives luxuries into battling evil hoards of poor people bent on drug crimes, along with a weeks camping food in case the power goes out because those greedy corporate CEO’s aren’t paying workers like them enough to keep the power lines from disconnecting in an ice storm.  Prepping is only a band-aid for when ‘Murica The Great isn’t working as well as usual.  Extend and pretend, fake it til you make it, all is well so move along.

The imperial bling still is flowing.  Until about two years prior to the end of the war, the Nazis kept extra food and consumer goods flowing to the citizens ( 1939 was several years too early to begin the war by Hitler’s plans, and full war production wasn’t even realized until after the invasion of Russia was defacto lost ).  Memories of the British POST war blockade induced starvation, along with lack of winter heat, were still sharp indeed in everyone’s mind.  Why did the Nazi’s legally rise to power, Hitler so popular with the majority?  He actually reduced unemployment and hunger to nothing ( unlike Obammy who just waved a wand and claimed unemployment magically shrunk ), and kept both that way long past a strategically legitimate time, to pacify the population.  He might have been rat crap crazy, but he wasn’t stupid.  The same with our rulers.  Stuff the proletariat full to the point of being immobile ( I make fun of everyone driving everywhere over impossibly short distances, but what choice do most of these fatties have? ) and flood them with entertainment and revolution and dissent won’t start long past its due date.

Our empire delivered a LOT.  An inconceivably huge amount of luxury allowing sloth and stupidity to rule.  That already ended, but even the crumbs in the carpet the Elite allow us as they sell the copper wiring from the walls is enough for you to build your own lifeboat.  It might get swamped in the storm, or you might make it to safety, Lady Luck the syphilitic whore unresponsive to your wishes or desires, but if you have a modicum of intelligence you are already building it, as no one but the gods and the fates can time the collapse.  Just please, PLEASE, do yourself the service of completely preparing as quickly as possible, the cheapest and fastest you can, before you indulge in upgrades and pretty wallpaper.  BTN first, in multiples, then treat yourself to the better things in life, the guilty luxuries and the Nice To Haves.  With all the cooking of the books, the lies of omission and statistics, the uncertainty of the Oil Dollar, the unknowability of the Derivatives Market time of implosion, you can’t know how little time you have left.  Imperial gifts to the citizens are still plentiful, if increasing in purchasing power relentlessly.  Stop thinking in terms of past imperial wealth ( SUV’s, McMansions, tasty storage food treats, Super Ninja Squad Semi-Automatic Weapons ) and embrace the future of Suck.  We grew up during the start of the decline of the empire and we still see the trees in the forest as rich and luxurious, and that simply isn’t reality anymore.  Stop being blinded by it.
