DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
*note: that time again, to spread and report the love that is minion support. For the month of August, $130 from Amazon commissions, $15 in Kindle book sales, and an astounding $270 in donations, for $405 total. Wheee! Here is the year to date since I've been writing full time. April, $490. May-$335, June-$285, July-$430. You guys are beyond great. Obviously, I couldn't do it without you.
*
note: Ave, took the personality test-INTJ-T, Architect. That was fun! I also looked up Guardians-what asshats! Personification of evil! Thanks for the heads up.

Have you subscribed to the
Green Mountain Dude yet? The last time I
mentioned him I noticed the subscriber number moving from around nine to 30,
but it hasn’t gone up since. And I know
I’m not the only one that feeds him customers.
He really is a pleasurable read I look forward to. That said, while far better than 99% of the
survival writers out there, he ain’t me.
On the article posting the fifth installment from Survival Acres bugging
out series, he got to talking about the farmers needing to kill off the rabid
starving idiots who took off into the hills thinking they could live off the
land, and he is of course right is noticing bugging out to eat berries and bugs
is a strategy that will get you killed.
Hunting and gathering only works under three conditions. There aren’t other people around ( low
population ). You were raised doing
this. And you do it with a tribe. Bug out’ers, wilderness types, violate every
rule. And C5 ( that’s the Green Mountain
Survival dude ) has nothing but distain for them. Yet, he also veers off on a tirade on anyone
that is offensive rather than defensive, which seems shortsighted to me.
*
We just talked about self
delusion and evil as a myth. Ignoring
this reality ignores human nature and history.
Man has ALWAYS been offensive in his tactics. Defense alone is a morality balm that will
get you killed. Do you know what I think
when I hear North American Doomers glorify themselves as defensive
farmers? Civilized Whites heroically
defended themselves against the Savage Red Man.
That is the myth they are living out.
Rawles pretending his followers are only going to conduct defensive
combat patrols around their retreats, and C5 waiting to defend his farm against
evil starving survivalists with more ammo than food, and American Liberators
Fighting For Democracy viciously attacked by violent Viet Cong in their
compounds that they leave to inoculate sick peasant children, all these are
variations on the theme of Better People Because They Only Fight Back After
Attacked. Americans, the White settlers
rather than the Natives, were always fighting back against sneaky vicious savages
who slaughtered their women and children.
Americans liberated Europe from the evil Nazi’s, while attacking Japan
from a base of the Philippines, a nation they took over colonizing from
Spain.
*
C5 is aghast that a
survival strategy is attacking farmers, just like those sneaky Muslim
Philippine guerrillas, or native Americans would do. Actually, just what every friggin group of
soldiers has done throughout history prior to the modern era of surplus carbon
energy. How do you think all those
European armies fed themselves on campaign?
Attacking farmers. Not killing
them, as C5 snidely comments, that would be eliminating your labor force for
next years harvest, although you were getting his food whether he lives or
dies. If his soil is fertile and there
are outbuildings and fences and such, some other peasant will put his son to
working that plot, so the killing wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, just not
a necessary thing. The simple fact is
that farming, under SOME circumstances, is a lot worse of a survival strategy
than raiding farms is. In fact, raiders
are a helpful post-apocalypse fauna, reducing criminal competing gangs,
clearing surrounding areas into a DMZ, in effect a government collecting taxes.
*
I’m not focusing on C5
exclusively here, this Defensiveness Is Godliness meme is sickeningly prevalent
in most survivalist circles. It is naïve. If a farmer organizes with others, as they
will need to do sooner or later ( the single farm in Comanche Country is
usually doomed ), eventually he will become a serf with a former warlord as the
new government, anyway. And his
government will certainly not remain defensive only. Your independent farmer joining in defense
will only work as long as the ammunition holds out, if that long. After that, armies will return to
professional standing bodies fed by slaves on farms, as centralizing up to the
maximization of resources and surplus energy allow. Weapons and equipment, soldiers and training
will be provided by the surplus of farmers, not by the farmers themselves, in
any area guerrillas cannot hold militarily.
And when was the last time guerrillas were successful ONLY utilizing
defensive tactics? From the very first
permanent settlements of man, one of the best tactics was sneaking through the
woods and attacking the other village while they slept, then running away prior
to taking casualties yourself. That isn’t
defensive, and it is highly dubious no one engaged in this because it was
immoral.
*
Why did the Indians attack
Whites? A lot of times it was because
OTHER whites paid them to do so, other civilized farmers, and a lot of times it
was their only tactically superior choice.
Take out the settlements women and children, and the White invader might
leave, or at least leave you alone a little longer. Whites, although they used the Indian attack
as justification to attack themselves ( this is how the Virtuous Warriors
sustain their superiority ), were also known to go on the offensive even
without current justification. As in,
ALL Indians are savages and evil so since my father was killed by Indians
twenty years ago by another tribe, I am right and just killing THIS tribe by
attacking them. Logically, the new
Indians are innocent and you are in the wrong attacking them, just as,
logically, you are morally correct in attacking those who attack you. But LOGIC has nothing to do with all of this,
it is merely emotion, superstition, self-justification and transferring fault.
*
No group or individual
will last long staying defensive.
Guerrillas, fighting that way from necessity, MUST act offensively. Oh, sure, they will have justified why they
attack, because they too must always have the moral high ground, but my point
is that EVERYONE justifies bad behavior.
Everyone. No exceptions to the
rule. C5 and Rawles will soon enough be
on the offensive, against the original attackers, then they will remain that
way and justify to themselves why they alone are in the right going on the
offensive against OTHERS. Note here that
I am NOT suggesting that it is a good idea to stock no food and all ammo and go
steal food. That is also militarily a
poor choice. Too easy to get yourself
killed. No, you store plenty of food and
then go steal more, in a group, prior to running out yourself. How do you think ANY government was ever
formed? They stole what they needed or
wanted. Simple as that. When one guy does it he is a bandit ( and not
a smart one ). When a “gang” does it
they are evil. But if one group attacks
and defeats another group, then controls that area, they are a new
government. Same actions, different
perspectives.
*
Defense Only is ONLY a
propaganda tool, to convince yourself and others that you are the aggrieved
defender. Forced to return force and
cruelty. In practice, defense only as a
tactical tool will get you killed. Self
delusion is okay if it strengthens you, but here is NOT the time and place to
delude ourselves. Human Survival Tool #1
has always been to kill the other tribe.
Not to defend against him. Just
like insects we populate past the point of our resource base. Before we get to the point that weakens us,
we kill the other tribe to increase our resources PAST the current population
of our ONE tribe. Two tribes no longer
exist. Two tribes rapidly approaching
resource exhaustion. Then you have one
remaining tribe with a large surplus, to absorb the upcoming births, births you
need to stay superior to other tribes who might want to steal from you. These foolish folk, Hippies at heart, like
Doomstead Diner Dude ( not to speak ill of the dead-I think he’s gone, not
having posted for near a week as of this articles writing ), actually think
that humans can change their nature to be better, gentler Can’t We All Just Get
Along species really have their head so far up their ass they have zero chance
of surviving the collapse. Is your
sister a FemiNazi who thinks Nurture is all and nature is none? Do you enjoy attempting to repeal the laws of
physics? Human nature is hardwiring, not
a pick and choose multiple choice test.
These people who think we can change our programming point out that life
long lactate consumption is relatively recent, so our bodies can obviously be
re-programmed. So his buddies the Penis
Haters think females can live as soldiers and police and firefighters and
EVOLVE upper body strength and hormonal aggression and male bonding and
cooperation? What a bunch of morons.
*
Aggressiveness, not
defensiveness, is what keeps us the apex predator. You want to be all girly and stay passive
until
given permission to assert
yourself violently, good luck you and yours surviving very long. Passive farmers do NOT triumph after the
apocalypse. They become serfs to a warlord.
Aggressors who plan and fight intelligently get what a farmer
produces. Why this is not viewed as a
survival strategy escapes my comprehension.
You almost want to ask yourself why we have history.

Yup , gotta be proactive in your defense plan too.
ReplyDeleteSuch as at for the wind to be right and burn any surrounding neighbors shelter whom are not of your tribe hee hee.
Got to have that clear field of fire to defend ya know.
Get out early for those raids, before it's all ate up.
I'm smelling sarcasm. You aren't raiding early, during the die off, you are raiding afterwards once food production starts back up. I feel like I'm waiting for the mountain to come to me. I did enjoy the clear field of fire snark, though, to be honest :)
DeletePost a link to this Green Mountain Dude.
DeleteI'm not finding it.
Sorry, I forget how long the address is since I have e-mail alerts.

"I also looked up Guardians-what asshats! Personification of evil!"
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words, LB - I'm an ESFJ / Guardian type who also happens to be one of your loyal supporters through Amazon purchases, donations, and a guest article or two...
I am like the Papists, I sell dispensations :). No, it refers back to the original comment the other day that introduced me to the personality test. I was being cheeky. Just agreeing that the type can be part of the problem. Peace.
DeleteI know you were, bro. No offense taken - I was just giving you a hard time :-)
DeleteAs you noted, one of the problems with those sorts of tests is that they can only offer a first order approximation of people who are multi-dimensional. I used the Meyers-Briggs type test as a tool when I was a department manager. I found it useful for providing a general approach to managing the employees but each still required some adaptation and overlap. Nature and nurture combine in some very strange ways.
You would think that more folks would give this kind of test, as it does macro-sort nicely. Glad I didn't offend. Communication is difficult through the keyboard. I don't really try to offend people, just their sloppy thinking or actions. I know the distinction can get muddied.
DeleteIt's interesting that the two survivalist blogs I follow are run by INTJs, this one and vault-co.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteINYJs tend to make more sense than others when it comes to wildly different situations or speculations about the future.
I also like that INTJs don't necessarily want to obliterate their foes as much as to see them fail.
For the record I also have a good ESFJ friend :)
"I also like that INTJs don't necessarily want to obliterate their foes as much as to see them fail."
DeleteI would think a common defense against social activity is just to wish people would go away. We aren't necessarily in any hurry to waste time on them otherwise. So, perhaps, that accounts for the difference? Yes, some of my best friends are Black, er, I mean ESFJ's :)
Amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou just poked my 62 years worth of gov't/media programming all in it's great big squishy eyeball with a razor sharp pointy stick.
Thank goodness! On a normal day, I get the sneaking suspicion I'm not making enough difference. The best BBQ's are slaughtered sacred cows, as one wittier than I stated long ago.
DeleteI suspect blog writers also talk "defense only" out of a paranoid (adaptive) view that they will look like potential revolutionaries to authorities. See! I would not start the next civil war! I just defend myself.
ReplyDeleteThat would be nice, assuming they are just being cautious. Me, I think they are playing the "don't offend anyone and risk losing any ad revenue" card.

ReplyDeleteThis is quite probably a staged photograph but the message is there. That cap&ball rifle/gun didn't shoot down the guy's airplane, but it still has its place in the whole situation.
Not a semi-auto? She's going to DIE!!!!!
DeleteWTF Dude!
ReplyDeleteYou linked me to a $30 kindle book?
I'll put that towards my FLIR I'll thank you very much
Which book are we talking about? I thought the above link was to a picture.

DeleteAs an aside I bought a pair of electronic earmuffs that amplify quiet sounds & dampen damaging sounds. Pretty freaky to acquire super hearing.
$15 kindle. You must have looked at the print price. Both still a bit steep. I'll have to watch those a bit more closely, no sense breaking the bank of any minions.
DeleteFor anyone interested I used a VPN routed through to New Zealand the Brave Browser and got a $32 price for the Kindle book. Then I used a TOR browser and was given a $15 price for the very same book.
DeleteI sent Lord Bison a Screen shot
Who can justify that kind of price increase? The $US price is high enough to absorb currency conversion, I would think.
DeleteWHAT?!
ReplyDeleteWho the heck wrote this one? The NOL????
It sure could not have been Jim!
This is how he USED to write.
Good job who ever wrote it!

I'm just going to pretend you still love me above all others.
DeleteHi. This is C5. Category5 will also do. I can be found at the Dark Green Mountain Survival Research Centre.
ReplyDeleteGreen Mountain Dude? Pffft. Christ rough working a 6 D cell dildo. No wonder no one can find me.
Me and Bison challenge each other but we are on friendly terms...
But now I have to go write a post on the problems of Going Aviking and Jessy James... Like I dont have anything better to do. I have a backlog of about ten posts before I think about it. I will be in the Amazon 2 weeks from now... Trying to not be abducted by real bad asses.
I started DGM SRC about 6 months back. Its sort of depressing.I just noticed a RESEARCH project I did on another board on no money alternatives to animal fencing. It got well over 10 thousand views. Now that I have my own site... if I get a hundred views, I am doing pretty good. If no one knows your name, no one knows who to look for.
Well, Thanks BP for turning readers onto me.
Sorry, everyone gets a nickname. Druid Dude. Black Cat Dude. DDD ( doomer diner dude ), or D3. Idahoan Yuppie Scum Survivalist Guru. Most everyone is "dude". Can you tell I grew up in California? I'll try to remember to do better with links. Your site is an invaluable read.
DeleteFirst, Excellent writings and making me think.. thanks James
ReplyDeleteSecond -Wave.. Hi C5 you do love your rambles but some good reading and thinking there as well.
I have found some of the writings in the past bit quite on target, both good food for thought but also making me shake my head a little as in a odd small way I am living it at the moment.
You see.. someone clear cut a couple hundred acres of forest to turn it into farm land, some just down the road and some more across the river from me and guess what it did.. it cleared the food supply of the local coy-wolves.
(we are so lucky, we don't have Coyotes, no No.. we have the rare thing happening where the daughter species is breeding out and taking over the mother ones. We are lucky enough to have coy-wolf cross's) they are bigger, meaner and they pack hunt like the wolves do.
For years we have X amount of cross from the wolf and they were a mind your own business kinda pack.. around but not bothering us (like a prepper that is there but quiet) and then three years ago, a new breeding pack moved in, displaced the other ones
They were a higher threat risk but still not bothering us yet and then came the reduction of resources and BAM..
Ok look not enough food to feed them and so they are now raiding the farmers and farms (remind you of anything)
We have lambs and sheep losses, we have had guard geese killed, we have small livestock taken and lost a number of farm cats and its all over the local area both sides of the creek and river.
Which has left us working on interesting ways to use the still growing pasture, the lockup barns and so forth to keep them at bay while they get bolder and bolder
As my hubby said last night.. we are under siege
As cranky as I am an believe me.. I am not so nice when I get cranky! I am also seeing it as a good reminder and learning curve on what we can do more and better for the future.
Bison, are there any military strategy books about this necessity for offense that is relevant to a regular person?
ReplyDeleteI know people who think they are super good/moral and anti-evil. They believe it to be wrong and bad 'karma' to attack anyone. In r/K theory they are r (rabbits).
Off hand, I got no references. I'm sure they are there, but it has been long enough since I've read pure military history my mind is blank. Sorry. Martin Van Cleveld, John Keegan and B.H. Liddell Hart are my three go to guys on the subject. If that helps at all
