tribe how 1 of 3

TRIBE HOW
A loyal minion brought up a very good question.  HOW.  We all know WHY you must share your stockpiled preps.  But we don’t know HOW.  The typical, usual advice is that you must have a tribe.  To have a tribe, you must buy off your tribal members by stocking for them.  I want to question these two assumptions.  You cannot make a claim that without a tribe, you die, and yet leave how the tribe is supplied out of the equation.  And I cannot make a claim that you only have the logistics to survive alone, without accounting how you can, or even should, do so.
*
Humans are a pack animal.  We evolved to live in tribes.  Without a tribe, we cannot do everything necessary to survive.  As the saying goes, the number one justification for joining a tribe, you have to sleep sometime.  But no one ever shares HOW we can have a tribe.  It used to actually be rather easy.  You bought $40 worth of wheat ( the buckets were free, so many restaurant meals were cheaply sold ), a $70 Mosin-Nagant and a sardine can of ammo for $90.  Per person.  Total bribe for each potential tribe member $200.
*
That was the 1990’s, a time of prosperity just prior to the Tech Wreck which ONLY didn’t crash the US economy because we immediately inflated the Housing Bubble ( AND we were able to because we were just off a high of Siberian cheap oil and before global Peak Oil ).  There is no more Fed Bubbles to inflate.  We are in a Fracking Oil Bubble, but look how bad things are now, and that is WITH all that “free” fracking oil energy.  Today, the cheapest gun is more than the old total.
*
You cannot find bulk free plastic buckets, just onesies and twosies.  The minimum gun/ammo/wheat price is about $600.  That is for inferior items.  AND, as a special bonus, you will have a heck of a time keeping a job now, whereas they used to be begging for help.  And cost of living for the basics is way out of control from twenty years ago.  It isn’t “just” there is inflation and quality decreases, it is also that even the old amount of money is harder to come by, let alone the new amount.  Bribing others to join your tribe costs 5-10 times more on a real cost basis.
*
And, I’m sure I need convince no one, the quality of that tribe member has also decreased.  Today’s generation of youth is largely a Soy Boy Brigade estrogen flooded PC indoctrinated idiot, or unemployed play station warrior. Not that I blame them for opting out of a useless economy as a choice, because while idleness is the Devil’s Playground, working for Da Corporate Anti-White Male Politically Correct Organization is not too far removed from working for Lucifer anyway.  As for the aging generation of old school survivalists, what a sad bunch that is.
*
Thinking of our ilk, I’m reminded of an old millionaire, living in a highly fortified home with all the material goods he’ll ever need, who falls down and dies of a heart attack as he scampers to his Safe Room after the alarm is tripped.  Our hearts are in the right place, but we are sentimental old fools with grander visions than actual abilities.  No harm there, even old dudes on the porch can admire a nice ass walking by and wish they could still mount it for something besides a nap.  And Never Giving Up is still admirable.
*
But from a practical standpoint, almost everyone you know is a worthless sod one way or another, survival wise.  Really, unfit for duty in the reality of collapse.  War is a young man’s game, and not for amateurs.  The modern state has traded quantity for quality, and they can get away with using poseurs, but only because they are trading highly concentrated energy sources in place of talent or experience.  Which aren’t really effective against those born to the trade anyway ( witness the Mother Of All Bombs that merely turned larger rocks into smaller ones ).
*
My question is not, “why are we bothering?”.  The odds of you surviving to use 90%+ of your supplies are low.  We know that.  We merely stockpile in case we survive, not because it will help us survive.  Survival is more avoiding people that stocking, and we ALL suck at that.  No, the question is, “WHY am I worried about forming a tribe if it is close to impossible AND if I’m only going to end up bribing a worthless mouth breathing peckerhead?”.  Because, you aren’t helping THEM.  You are helping YOU.  And honestly, being a dumbass can be good.
*
Look at the typical 18 year old military recruit.  Most likely, they are a loser just because they HAVE to join.  Individually they might be Super Awesome, but they did just come from the legions of poor and unemployable ( because there are no jobs, not because they can’t work ).  That is preferable as the poor are tougher and more able to handle privation, but more than likely you were raised without sufficient resources which as a group spells inadequate biologic units.  They can fatten some up and put on muscle and fix teeth, but there is also a fixed cost with the unfixables.
*
But my point here is that the average recruit is either a dumb ass, or will become one.  Despite any propaganda, the military is a rigid top down organization that punishes individuality or inventiveness.   If you are smart, you get out.  If you are smart but must stay in, they will over time kill any incentive or intelligence you had.  The military LOVES dumb asses.  They do as they are told.  And they do it quick and efficiently.  Please refer back to the Forrest Gump boot camp scene, if you are confused.

  1. Because I do intend to survive, all potential tribe members will have to bribe me to join up. And continue to make themselves worthy every dam day. No slacking at all.

    Potential tribe member qualifications:

    1) Must be a long term gun owner and shooter with fairly decent equipment and supply.

    2) Must be already living rurally for a minimum of 5 years and have ample supplies on hand for self sufficiency for at least 6 months.

    3) Must have some useful skills that can provide long term benefit to the tribe. Examples: Medical experience and supplies, food acquisition and preparation, extensive tool provisions and experience, shelter building and repair experience, communications equipment and experience.

    4) Non-religious, or, at least have the ability to keep that shit out of the equation. Life has no room for fairy tales and childish minds.

    5) Mature adult attitude that is capable of being serious and fun at the appropriate times.

    6) Been self employed for at least 5 years, no job type employees need apply for their attitude is skewed poorly and require constant supervision.

    7) A thinker and a reader.

If a person has none of those attributes why would I want them in my tribe? Feelings? Pleeze. Feel this. I already problems, after collapse I'll have even more. Bringing even more problems in would mean I have a hole in my head.

If I can't sleep soundly all night long while my life is in the hands of tribe members, than why are they even here? If they aren't benefitting me and the rest of the tribe, what are they doing here?

There are only 4 members in my tribe currently with maybe 8-12 potentials out on the horizon. I suspect that things will have to get really bad before people start to learn the tribe mentality.

    1. Jesus, dude, while you are at it, add "perfect hair" to the list. I think you are trying to disqualify everyone so you can have an excuse to NOT have ANY tribe. Not that there is anything wrong with that! :)

    2. What is the purpose of a tribe member, to bring something to the party, or to take something away from the party?

I listed some qualifications that I believe would be beneficial to the tribe and some limitations that I believe could be disastrous to the tribe, what are some of yours?

(I believe a big problem today, and you've mentioned it often enough, is the ratio of takers to producers and I would like to keep that ration in favor of the producers as they earn it, by rooting out the losers right up front.)

    3. I pretty much agreed with you-and mostly replying humorously. Tribes might be like wives. A huge pain in the ass, but mostly needed. Mostly, at least for optimal performance.

    4. Oh OK, I wasn't sure where you were coming from.
I did some further thinking on this and perhaps my previous idea may have been based on incomplete thinking.

A tribe of say 10 or more people (an army squad) will probably have to have someone in charge and that person may have to wring tribe member necks. That's not for me. In the army I was promoted to corporal (from SP4) for almost 2 weeks, I just couldn't do it. Or rather, I didn't want to be an asshole to people that were my friends. I'd probably be the same with tribe, among people I have known for a long time. Maybe I would change my outlook though if the situation was all different. I'm just not naturally a hard ass and prefer to not be around people that are. Maybe I have a character flaw in that regard. Maybe I'm destined to always be a lone wolf.

    5. I like the thinker/reader, non-religious, and being a producer criteria.
Individuals with these qualifications probably already lead their own group.
Kind of like looking for employees. If they are great, they probably have their own business.
My experience with mutual aid type survival groups is family ties usually trump other considerations.

    6. The good thing about family is they are generally stuck on better behavior. At least historically. We will return there soon enough and those with previous bad behavior are stuck with zero network.

    7. GS-I think you would be fine tribally. You are describing top down leadership. Agricultural Age organization. Tribes are more equal, a true meritocracy. You'd be leading by consent, not appointment. I know we have a bit of friction communicating. The humor just doesn't come through well. Be cool, brother.

  2. I think the GS criteria might work during an initial phase of a die off. Soon enough though, there is power in numbers. Someone leading a group 10 times your size with lower standards, but a sound strategy for taking other people’s stuff, would have a distinct advantage. That’s not meant as criticism, just pointing out the dilemma that people are your best resource and your worst enemy at the same time... and I mean the same exact people. Tolerating some bs may sometimes be worth it for the power of numbers.

  3. “The military LOVES dumb asses.”

This reminded me of some dude that I worked with some years back, that was such an incredible dumb ass, that he literally couldn’t pass whatever minimal requirements it took to get into the military; and he tried at all 3 branches! And this was back in the days before the military was more selective.

The same guy was offered a promotion at the company to get his commercial drivers license. The company provided the training, but he had to pass the written DMV exam first, which the company paid for the first time. This moron failed 3 times in row. But here’s the thing; there are only 3 sets of tests, and they give you a copy after each test, with the corrections, so on the 4th try, he could not fail.

He was also a huge pothead, and I’m here to tell you that this dude could not afford to lose any brain cells at all :D He should also probably leave all of this off of any future résumé :D

      They Walk Among Us...
      Featured 12/12/2008
People like these make you wonder how they actually survive in this world of ours!

A K-Mart check out clerk rang up $46.64. I gave her a 50 bill. She gave me back $46.64. I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in MY favor. She became indignant & informed me she was educated & knew what she was doing, & returned the money again. I gave her the money back-same scenario & departed the store with the $46.64.

I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said 'buy one-get one free.' 'They're already buy-one-get-one-free,' she said, 'so I guess they're both free'. She Handed me my free Lattes and I walked out the door.

One day I was walking down the beach with some Friends when one of them shouted, 'Look at that dead bird!'. Someone looked up at the sky and said, 'Where'?

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north because, he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the north?' When my brother explained that the sun rises in the East, and has for sometime, she shook her head and said, 'Oh I don't keep up with all that stuff.'

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

I couldn't find my airport luggage, so I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional & I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me, 'has your plane arrived yet?'

While working at a pizza parlor I heard a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone. The cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6 He thought about it before responding. 'Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.'

At a southern fast food restaurant, I ordered a hamburger and French fries. The young lady taking orders informed that they had no hamburgers or French fries. I replied that the other customers were being served hamburgers and French fries. She looked at me quizzically and replied 'those are BURGERS AND FRIES!'

They Walk Among Us, they Reproduce, and Worst of all ...THEY VOTED.

  4. Some gun guru (ex / current SF) said he could pretty much take any preppers stockpile from them fairly easily. The weakness of every prepper he's seen / met is the lack of people.

    6. I watched it since it was only 6 minutes. I suppose that he does make some good points, but at the same time he also strikes me as a bit of blow hard. All of those assault rifles that he has lining his walls, are hella resource intensive as well, though this would give him an initial advantage.

@ 4:14 “What would actually work is that you would need a network of people to survive”

And there’s the fatal flaw in his plan. Good luck finding people today of the quality that you can count on in such a scenario.

    7. My take was that 1) all those Boy Toy guns are a tax write off, as his business is tactical adviser, and 2) he has the same antiquated survivalist views as Rawles. Which seems to be the norm. He holds no novel thoughts, and so I can't call him a blow-hard as much as a parrot. Agree on the fatal nature of his plan ( besides the semi-auto, natch! ).

    8. I’m by no means an expert in such matters Jim, but that was my take away. This dude is counting on an awful lot to go right following the collapse. First off, it sounds like he’s counting on having a small community of reliable people, to include a doctor as well, which in and of itself, is no mean feat. So when the flag goes up, he’s counting on all of these people actually making it to the BOL. The other consideration is that unless his retreat is very rural, he’s probably gonna need several thousand rounds more of ammo than he likely has. And in this latter scenario, then what are the odds of his community all coming together, and making it there in one piece?

Now assuming that the retreat is in a rural area, and it’s already a full time community, then I would say that he has the best chance of any, but I can almost guarantee you that this isn’t the case. I think that the military mindset is actually a hindrance, because you are too used to having a support network to fall back on. I was reading something recently on how cops and soldiers are the worst criminals (Even with the knowledge of crime science that cops have) mostly due to the fact that they only have direct experience when it comes to committing state sanctioned criminal acts.

    9. Right, how are you a tactical expert and have no experience with things going wrong?

    10. Excellent point about military / tactical mindset and survivalism. I watched one demonstration video and the guys were blasting ammo at such a rate I was aghast. DUDE! You've only got what you've got. There is no re-supply!

  5. My problem with the whole group concept is everyone who talks about being in a group is the leader. I haven't heard anybody say they are in someone else's group. Everyone types on the internet like the are The Supreme Alpha. In reality most are followers. A group of four people have almost no chance against a group of eight. What if its forty ambushing your location. A lot of people's only chance for calories will be how many times they can provide oral in a day. If your the leader you will probably be overthrown. You won't be king over your domain.

    1. Oral, not that there is anything wrong with that! :) Good points. True. Hoarding doesn't make us smarter. A 12 year old with a savings account can do it. Smart-er? Getting the hell away from people. All people except immediate family. Let's face it, we are all dumb asses playing at this game.

    2. Also, thanks for the reminder. The "everyone thinks they are alpha" will eventually go into the hermit survivalist book.

  6. The military is changing. For the worse in some areas (anti bullying, anti hazing training/standards taken too far) but, for the better in others. All Soldiers are expected to know and understand the Commander's intent, not just do what they are told. On the battlefield, our strength is our adaptability, not blind obedience to doctrine. Do what I say without question has it's place in basic training, but loses it's utility on the line. If your Soldiers do not understand why they are doing the task they can't use their own ingenuity to find a better way to do it.

    1. It would be nice to believe this. But the entire history of our military is class based. AND, lip service was given to this before, which was just lipstick on a pig.
