book interupted

BOOK INTERUPTED
Okay, here I was writing the new version of “Four Storage Plan Book”, and I realized the thing became pretty worthless pretty darn quick. I mean, it is bad enough most of my articles are amusingly behind the times, but now the book itself is close to useless. Headlines are making a daily blog obsolete-now there is a strange occurrence, for someone who started publishing a paper and stamp hard copy newsletter. I know, I shouldn't be posting articles a week in advance. But I've been doing that for years ( 7-8? ) and the Beer Bug is not much over a month old.
*
I'm not breaking news even if I published on the day of production, as I watch the same news you all do, to create my analysis. I don't even really want to write on the pandemic ( ah, the CDC, $12 billion a year to say “what's a pandemic?” and the newest one I just ran across on ZeroHedge, “don't test, don't tell” HA! ), but what else has such importance right now? You are about to lose your jobs, and the shelves are mere weeks from serious depletion ( given the “slow boat from China” nature of distribution ). It isn't like that isn't going to grab your attention and not let go, a pit bull on a bone.
*
As most of you know, writing daily for almost fourteen years, at times I have not much of anything to discuss. I draw a blank, at least on subjects that interest me at the time, and that is more than just a rehash of the basics. I've always prided myself on being more of an advanced survivalist publication. Granted, I always double around on myself and talk about the same subject, but I like to think those are far between and I always have improvements on the idea. So sometimes I need to fall back on a book, to get that daily subject inspiration.
*
I haven't done a lot of books recently, as I really went full bore full time right after I quit my day job, basking in the pleasure of catching up now that I had the time ( and Master Of The Universe Asshats weren't killing me and distracting me with their personal problems exacerbated by incompetence ). I didn't have a lot more to cover. So now I had two problems. Some days a blank on the blog, which couldn't be substituted with a book chapter. Actually, three problems. I need an e-mail newsletter in case of Google censorship, so there was pressure there for more subject matter.
*
I finally settle on a book, not REALLY happy with the choice but I knew I could improve it, and so at least it was a project that held my attention ( I have no problem, writing nonstop. I just need to be passionate about the subject ). And then, Sad Panda, the whole concept become obsolete. How in the name of all that is good and holy and just can you store one of the plans, when all the freeze dried foods are now two to three months back ordered? And how are you supposed to complete a second food storage plan when it will, very shortly-perhaps by publication time, be dangerous to go out shopping? So much for saving money buying loss leaders.
*
Now the four plans are down to two plans, feed store wheat and stocking more of what you eat every day. That isn't a book. Even I, with the worst case of verbal diarrhea, cannot plump out a book from that ( my book How To Eat Wheat covers a lot of that and there is no need to duplicate the information ). And that is too bad, because I was really starting to enjoy the process of writing the book. Oh, I could wing it. I could say all the already prepared foods could just be canned wet goods and instant convenience foods, but come on!
*
Is this really the best time to be blowing smoke up your ass? Crap just went from Real, to Really Humping Bad. The last thing you need now is me phoning it in, to cover for the fact my prepping plan is no longer relevant. It is better I just say, oops, let's stop the presses on this one. And does it even really matter? The simple fact is you either have enough calories or you don't, and luxury and taste and variety don't mean crapadoodle right now. If you have to suit up in plastic right now to get enough food, you are screwed.
*
The Four Plan was always an optional theory, to improve and add convenience and enjoyment. The only plan that ever really mattered was the bare bones plan. Wheat ( or, rice/beans for you weirdos ), fat and vitamins, at a minimum, focusing on calories far out into the future. That is the only thing that mattered, minimum calories and nutrients to keep you alive and healthy. Period. You didn't have to enjoy it. You just needed it. Better bags of flour, with nothing to eat but pancakes as you flee on your bicycle, than a Hummer to drive ( until the gas tank ran out ) down to pick up your freeze dried foods. Assuming they were ever shipped to your address.
*
At this point, saving money on food plans is the least of your worries. Pay the man, or get left behind on the south side of the border. It doesn't matter if he is charging too much, only that you arrive at your destination. And, truth be told, all of you dumb asswipes just got very lucky. Your terrible plans of working until the ghettos rose up in rebellion, and bugging in, they just happened to become viable. Oh, not long term. But in almost any other scenario, some of you would already have been in deep trouble.
*
Now you are getting a reprieve. Your plan of throwing money at any problem is still, at least at this moment, working. You can go buy canned meat at $10 a pound, your double the price of ammo at the gun store, etc. Every terrible plan is at least going to work for you long enough to figure out your next step. Time is running out even for that, but at least the zombies are far enough away right now you can paste over that lifetime of indecision and inability to invest. You have time, if you panic hard and bite the bullet. Would I pull the plug, if I were you? I would, if I had to.
*
I cannot guarantee this is actually the SHTF. I honestly believe it is, but I cannot guarantee it. No one knows what happens next. But if anyone wanted my advice, I'd say go for broke, now. Nothing stupid. Don't rack up credit cards. At least, don't charge more than you can pay back. I wouldn't hesitate to liquidate your IRA or sell your nice house at a slight loss. Because in my mind, the banks WILL fail and so will the real estate market. If I'm wrong, you only lose Opportunity Costs. You CAN, done right, survive on Social Security ( assuming the system doesn't fail ). So that pension cash out won't REALLY hurt you if I'm wrong.
*
You CAN, if done correctly, live in a smaller shelter. So what if you lost all that paper profit? If it eases your mind more to cash out now and move away from crowds, you've gained peace of mind rather than lost any potential profits. But You Need To Do You, as SurvPrep4NormPeeps says. You have final responsibility on your decisions. I don't TRY to mislead anyone. But I'm not like you, I'm more paranoid. My decisions may not be right for you.
*
But just to make my case, this isn't even Beer Bug. This is Liquidity Crisis PLUS Beer Bug. The financial system was already 2008 Reduxing. The virus just sped it up and guaranteed it ( okay, PROBABLY guaranteed ). No matter how you look at it, the trend was already in place. The details just keep changing. This might be the last chance to Panic Early, Avoid The Rush.

  1. I hope everyone has food / feed for your pets and farm animals.

I have a friend who has believed for years that we will have hard times. He is not saving extra food for his dogs. His plan is to shoot and eat them when hard times are here.

    1. I made that joke about the NOL's dog, the little fat bastard must have been the runt and was always obsessed by food. I hope he was making a joke. Who can't store corn kernels, making dog food out of cornmeal and people scraps? Boil it all together, pour, cool, cut.

    2. He was not joking about shooting the dogs. He only has about 1-2 months of food for his family, so he may need to eat his dogs.

It doesn't make sense to me not to have at least a few extra months of dog food. It may be a 3 month quarantine and then maybe dog food will be available again. At least it gives him time to find more food.

    3. Why does someone only have a few months of storage food? Who can't put back a few bags of Old Roy? This person confuses me.

    4. Sounds like writer's block.
Perhaps you need a change in locale to spur the old creative juices. A short vacation to...oh, I don't know...N. Italy or China. I hear special combo tour packages are selling at great prices. Those combo river cruises are to die for. Fly in, take walking tour to sites then board a luxurious river cruiser and head to another itinary. Gracious living onboard while all your dining is prepared to the highest standards.

Take in the views. I hear the new nightly bonfires outside of Wuhan are really blazing. You could even research new foods and recipies because, quite honestly, the whole freeze dried yak and whole wheat kernels is getting a bit long in the tooth.
A stop in a Chinese 'wet market' would be great spot to pick up a little "sumptin' sumptin'" that none of us have ever had! I think the French call it Nouvelle cuisine....that translates to 'novel eating'.
While you're in Wuhan ask if that 'Bio Lab' place is working on meatless meat or if they're cooking up something else that will be the next 'NEW THING'
      Bon Voyage!

  2. I have been making my own dog food for about 3 years, its simple healthier and cheaper than decent dog food. Cheap dog food is cornmeal, a few meat scraps and rancid oils sprayed over it so your dog will eat it.
I don't know how most people's feed store wheat is but mine is horse feed. It has a lot of husk and dirt in it. To remove the crap take a fan or blow dryer, turn on low and pour your wheat in front of the air flow. You will know immediately if the air flow is to hard...the kernels will blow away with the crap. I do this 2 or 3 times and have "High" quality wheat for horse feed price. In my part of the country that is $10 for 50 lbs.

    1. I'm a savage, I just throw mine in the grinder. The occasional unground twig is easily spat out. I'll note that while my chest hair wasn't increased, my nose and ear hair has. So it must be good for me.

  3. James,

Here is another feather for your cap.

I went to the feed store yesterday to get what they had in wheat, the last time I talked with them it was just white, not red. So I drove up to get the white and they tell me they are out, and don't know when they will get more stock.

I do have a pound or two put back for a rainy day, it's just that Honeyville has been out of red in the 50lb. sacks for awhile.

I was thinking that I caught your paranoia (To far away from ya, to catch the beer bug if ya get it.) :D

So I just wanted to get some extra, for the harder times to come. BUT, Damn it Jim!!! you are right again.

    Day late, and dollar short.
Here's your feather, oh great one. :(

    1. I won't lie-I'm basking in my wonderfulness. BUT. It was pretty easy to just yell the sky was falling, for decades, and then finally be correct. A stopped clock being right twice a day. So I cannot take credit, except for stubbornness. It does confuse me a bit why wheat won't be restocked, unless finances and logistics ( or, even, the crop results ) are far more screwed than I realized

    2. If wheat isn't available, branch put. Try barley or oats. Roughly the same nutrition, with a bit more fat. Don't worry about shelf life. You'll be eating it soon enough.

  4. I might be one of the worst prepared of your minions. All that I have is one bag of feed store wheat, a small bag of spelt that I got from the health food store, and about 8lbs of Carbquik™ (Low carb flour). My current housing situation doesn’t really permit me to store as much as I’d like to. As solarman points out, the feed store wheat isn’t the cleanest. But that’s not what concerns me. It’s the possible pesticide exposure, or the possibility of being irradiated (Again, for pest control). My advice, if you can afford it, is to pay extra, and get human grade wheat. Yes, you should also get feed store wheat, just in case. But I’d try to avoid eating it, if at all possible.

“Better bags of flour, with nothing to eat but pancakes as you flee on your bicycle, than a Hummer to drive ( until the gas tank ran out )”

That was always the biggest plot hole to me, in the movie, The Road Warrior. At this point, no one is going to be cruising around in big gas guzzling V8’s, to the point that you have to stop to sop up petrol in a hub cap, from a rag, while being pursued by a couple of post apocalyptic fags on a motorcycle (At least one of which, you wouldn’t want to be caught by :D ). Nah, everyone will be on motorcycles at this point. Which, regardless of one’s feelings on said form of transportation, it wouldn’t exactly be a terrible idea to have one stored in the garage, along with a few gas cans treated with fuel preservative. As discussed a few days back, horses will eventually be the transportation of the future. Better get on ghostsniper’s good side while you still can. Otherwise, Fuk you. Fuk you ded, to be specific :D

    1. As I said about five gallon buckets, on the cheap, it might kill you from cancer in thirty years, but you need calories this month to stat alive. The same applies to pesticides on wheat. Get 2 sheets of plywood and a few boards. Sheet over the beds boxspring, boards on the sides, and in the middle, sheet on top. Bags of wheat in between. Mattress on top. Or, bags of wheat under the bed. Buckets of wheat behind the cloths in the closet. Buckets of wheat in your car trunk ( although heat might be an issue ). The usual bug and rodent protections are required, obviously. No apartment is too small to NOT have a years worth of wheat. Do not make me threaten you with minion membership loss, please.

    2. PS-The Road Warrior is the only great movie of the franchise. I excuse its plot holes because it is so good. Very few PA movies come so close to perfection. Although, obviously, I also have a book for that ( free at the web site )

    3. Yeah, you probably have a far more pragmatic attitude towards the wheat, than I. Chances are, it’s relatively safe to eat.

Living situation is as follows. I live on my parents farm (Dad is gone now) in a 30+ year old RV. I have almost no room what so ever. Bedding is not conventional, so that option doesn’t exist, short of gutting the RV. Which is beyond my ability to do, without seriously screwing it up. Also, don’t want to put any extra work into this thing, since there’s no way I’d ever try to drive this pig to Nevada, when the time comes.

What I really need to do, is simply head to Nevada this summer, and develop the lot. First, by excavating for the dugout. Once I do this, then I’m stuck here, since I wouldn’t dare leave everything behind, unattended. But then I’ll be all alone out here, and very isolated. Now I’m loner by nature, but this is beyond any kind of isolation that I’ve ever experienced before. I would have been better off buying east of the Mississippi, where the ratio of females is in favor of males, but that’s a should have, would have, could have, sorta deal. Still might be able to though, as I do have some funds left over.

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, might have been the most realistic, since our protagonist is realistically using horses and salvaged vehicles. But it still sucked. Mad Max: Fury Road, seems to be a concoction of empowered fems, magical minorities (and one imagines a few turd burglars, thrown in for good measure :D ) performing feats better than any white dude can. But since I refuse to see it (outside of the trailer) I don’t really know. All that I had to see, was the endless ammo expenditure in the trailer, to know that it was the least realistic of the Mad Max series. Well, that, and let’s be honest here. That feminist nonsense will go out the window 5 seconds after the flag goes up, and we’re in a full on collapse.

    4. Okay, sorry. I was thinking apartment, for whatever reason. How about following the example of our intrepid Ozark minion and burying the galvanized trash cans? I buried the last of my 223 last weekend. Relatively small hole. Two hours, near killed me. Digging used to be fun.

    5. California/Elko dude,
Just my opinion, but if you don't cross the Sierras sometime within the next month, there will likely be quarantine closures somewhere on both sides of the passes. If you've been keeping up with the news, the CA health care system is on the verge of breaking due to not enough PPE for nurses and doctors. CV is spreading out of control which was admitted in a Los Angeles Times article today. You'd better man up and move to Elko NOW, figuring out how you're going to live like a savage with no infrastructure to back you up, or the quarantines, which are coming, will lock you in CA. My vote is you'd at least have a better chance of making it with at least some family around in a place you're familiar with. Don't feel too bad, I have plans that I didn't act quickly enough on that I'll now have to abandon and suffer for it. You, me, and everyone else too.
      Peace to you,

    6. Fuk fuel preservative. Today was the first nice day of the year and I was cycling through things with engines and using year old fuel. ALL of them fired right up and no fuel problems. The generator needed a shot of ether but then purred like a just-fed kitten.

Hit walmart asap and buy all their frozen vegetables, take em home and thaw em, then right into the Nesco dryer. Store in sando size zip locks in the freezer. Make sure you squeeze all the air out. Do the same with canned chicken. Ham, tuna, etc.

  5. Good post. I agree, the beer flu is the straw, the upcoming economic collapse is the camel.

In my neck of the woods, regular, over the counter, supermarket food is still available: canned chili, soup, spaghetti, tuna, etc. Time to stock it tall and deep.

    2. Naw, just had some other priorities for awhile. Two of my three kiddos left for college. That's kinda hard on a stay at home mom so I got a job in town to keep me occupied -- at a hospital no less.

I work in a doctor's office which is part of the hospital. Very interesting with everything going on. Right now I am required to ask patients if they have "traveled outside of the US". Heck, I SHOULD be asking if you have traveled to Seattle which is only 1 tank of gas away!?!!!??

No mask for office staff just nursing staff. Luckily I work with folks getting elective surgery for the most part so if you're sick, you don't come in to see my docs.

    3. Would you like to trade children? My stepdaughter is way too close. And she's high maintenance :) Did you see Italy? 10% of docs there already sick and quarantined. Fast tracking students to fill the meat grinder. I think it is already everywhere here. Just waiting for that month before the symptoms show.

  6. It is business as usual in my area. Stacks of 50 pound bags of beans and rice at Costco. I will be disappointed if there is not at least a 10% die off. I think the kung flu is fear mongering. U.S. deaths are 19 people, last year 34,000 died from the regular flu.
