imported from detroit

IMPORTED FROM DETROIT

Back in my off-grid days, when TV was not Netflix but broadcast, and the amount of commercials had doubled since my youth, there appeared an advertisement so retarded and gay it made all others brightly shine in comparison, at least temporarily until the next brightest turd appears.  “Imported From Detroit” was a car commercial, as you might have guessed, as they usually don’t have Popeye’s Chicken spending money trying to connect a decaying industrial wasteland with yummy deep fried yard-bird in the minds of consumers, and if my memory serves correctly they were in effect saying that their Chrysler 6000 ( or whatever the make and model was ) was far better than a BMW or a Lexus and that the new Better Than Foreign Imports was whatever was being advertised.   Now, don’t get me wrong.  Car commercials have almost always been pretty terrible ( the only excepting coming to my mind was a Super Bowel [misspelling intentional] commercial with a dive-bombing seagull with the voice of the Cheers postman character ).  They were setting the low bar standard since about forever.  It was just that this irony challenged boastful claim was so far from the truth, akin to a chamber of commerce from Somalia trying to fill a tourist cruise, that it became especially bad.

*

Plenty of uninformed folk still buy the worst sheet metal the American auto industry can pawn off on them, but while it is one thing to ignore your own poor behavior fleecing your customers, surely it is poor taste even for those jag-offs to spit upon products that are actually on a whole other plain of existence.  Back in the day, favoring Chevy, Ford or Chrysler was an informed matter of picking The Least Worst Evil, just as we did with politicians.  But just when you thought that they couldn’t get any worse, now all three car makers are pushing off exponentially worse quality, at double the price.  I think at this point I’d prefer to travel over to Poland and look for an old Soviet built Peoples Car and ship it over for ownership.  Detroit autos are a reflection of American values and a statement of our overall condition, pretty shiny over priced pieces of crap that don’t last very long and are priced at over what most of us can afford, assuming we even can find a job.

*

Alas, the auto companies are actually the BEST part of Detroit.  A lot of analysts, professional only by dent of income or amateur and self-styled such as myself, claim this is due to socialist government at the state and/or city level, but these are just idiots useful to the elites as they push the illusion that more free market will solve all our problems ( when, of course, in fact lack of regulation has made a lot of our problems far worse than they need to be-and that comes from a confirmed anarchist ).  The only problem Detroit has is a lack of a functional economy.  A quick look at most northern European countries will show you how much socialism is possible as long as money is flowing in.  Big Daddy Government is not the problem.  And you aren’t going to reverse the problems by throwing on a fresh layer of paint in the downtown area.  Anyone with money has already left this pit, and you can’t keep streetlamps on with Food Stamps.

*

Detroit is little different than most other Third World slums, their only reason for existence as a peasant dumping ground as global agriculture has become centralized, mechanized and commoditized forcing the poor off their land into the urban areas.  As with most things in America, we just did it in a way that was a lot more expensive and wasteful, but it is still just a slum holding our refuse ( I’m not making a racial statement-rednecks have their own version in rural trailer parks, just as dependent on welfare and crime ).  Now, here is the whole point of this article, so pay attention.  Detroit has tens of thousands of abandoned commercial buildings and homes.  Many are going up for sale for back taxes, quite a few for a nominal fee if you agree to fix them up.  If you think it is such a good idea to be a suburban prepper, or an in-place prepper, or to “bug-in”, or for that matter anyone who thinks Slow Collapse is correct, I challenge any of you to buy these nearly free properties and move to Detroit.  I’d wager no one would accept.  Because Detroit IS a very dangerous foreign country slum city.

*

So, what makes you think YOUR city is going to NOT emulate Detroit, very soon indeed?  I’m certainly not saying you must leave the city no matter the cost.  Almost all of us live in towns, even smaller towns, that contain too many people for our own safety.  I just want you to keep this in mind.  If you couldn’t survive in Detroit, right now, what makes you think your location is safe in the near future?  Detroit was THE glowing successful metropolis, not all that long ago.  If our only economic direction is Down Until Out, we will all be in Detroit sooner or later.  Please consider your reasons for staying.

  1. The joy of country life. We keep getting reports of home invasion. A execution style killing just noth of us. A "girl" was tired of her boyfriend, so she had him executed. Largest pot bust in the state less than two miles away. So be wary next time someone goes all mother earth news on your ass!

    1. But all the survivalist gurus tell us the country is God's Blessing! Of course, so is being rich.

I live in a smallish town in PA. The same crap that happens in larger hell holes (aka Baltimore and Detroit etc) happens here too. Just not with as much frequency. There is a really bad heroin/opiate problem in rural America. All of that bunk about country life being so safe simple and god fearing is patent BS. All of my family hails from Appalachia. My cousins who did not leave are a train wreck of dope dealing and alcoholism. Nary a Rawle's like clone in sight. No prayer breakfasts for them--perhaps beer for breakfast.
Its that way all over the country. Especially in rural areas. There are no frickin' jobs. When people have no purpose...They do stupid crap and breed more stupid people. I will grant that the rural aka poor white population is less blood thirsty than inner city blacks/minorities. However they are just further down the food chain.

  2. I just found out the spot in the road I live in has only 165 citizens paying taxes. I thought it was 3 times that. They probably won't be able to keep the sewer working if more leave. The state is looking taking over that and the town going bankrupt. This in rural NC. It's everywhere, the while country is failing. Slowly now but faster soon?

    1. I advocate the Waterfall Collapse. The Italian dude, much smarter than me, says Seneca Collapse-pretty close. Of course, Druid Dude is smarter than me too and says 400 year collapse. I'd say, believe what you see.

    2. I say...last one year, from when SHTF and Anarchy sets in. Then if you are still alive...pretty much, you'll likely be able to live wherever you choose.
I predict many openings in real estate, at deals you can steal. :-)

    3. i read a weblog written by a farmer in missouri.
mentioned how empty the country around him was getting the last few years.

i wonder where everyone is going or are they dying out and no one to replace them?

    4. I'd guess that farmers, becoming impoverished, move to the city. No one replaces them if the site isn't useful for mechanized big ag.

  3. While A lot of inner cities are poor choices for Preppers. There are areas that cheap Back tax properties make a lot of sense for working poor. I have 4 semi rural locations around Birmingham al. area. all tax properties. Now if I worked I could find a lot near employment and have a fall back or BOL both for under 1500$ A tool shed on a lot near job and a rural property with a home or camper.

Now those that want a NICE house close to their job and a barren Unworked BOL are the screwed ones. Don't discount cheap urban property but don't bet your life on it as your ONLY ONE. A 1 mile walk from a city lot for 5 days with weekends spent 30 miles in the woods if done cheap is doable.

  4. If you had "really-big money" and needed to get this cash out a really-big virtual sinkhole (US Treasuries)over several decades with a century-long payback, buying Detroit looks like a great opportunity. As part of the deal, your Giant Cartel will make with the City, to deconstruct large tracts and patrol them, there will be no taxes or expenses assessed on the land for 100 year or until 10 years after re-urbanization (whichever first). It might take some payola to get this as a rock-solid contract with the City to change the City border away from your land, but it's just a cost of doing biz in the 3rd whirled.

Now that you have land, you can import workers from China to guard and homestead the land. They can't leave the property, but it's big. More payoffs to Congrease for green cards and many babies born in Little China USA. Special Free Economic Trade Zone, they might call it. Detroit is perched on interesting strata, and pretty-fertile soil/climate for growing food. China appreciates food. Just like in Africa, Chinese-run farms do not send food to local farmer's markets; they preserve/package for shipment to China, by Order of the Central Committee.

    Watch.

    1. Wouldn't 80 years of industrial pollution be an issue with the land, plus clearing?

    2. Hell, the Chinese consider pollution to be enriched soil, thats not been farmed...thus depleted like all our current farms are.

    3. Just scrape off the polluted stuff, good as new!

  6. I did a couple of jobs in Detroit a few years ago, tearing out the interior of the Argonaut building being one. First thing ya notice is there is no fast food restaurants except for one and that is KFC. You go in there and the entire service counter is wrapped in bulletproof glass, you slide yer money under the glass, and they place yer order in a section that rotates. Second, the thieves are not very smart...our work truck got broke into and they stole a radio that was coded to the truck, climbing over a bag of mine that contained a full carton of cigs and a digital camera. As far as contamination, my company quit Detroit after me and one other guy got cynanide poisoning. If they paid me 100k I would not move to Detroit, but the Western side of MI is very nice.

    2. If someone buys KFC, I always look at it, but not eat. Poor wizened little chickens, mostly bone and breading, with some partially-cooked fat next to the tiny muscle. Give me a happy bug-fed yardbird with flavor and 3-years of egg-laying for the pot any time (if you buy a chicken this good, she will be about $30 at the organic yuppie scum WholeNaturalPaycheckCo-op Grocery).

Popeye's is only a variation on corporatefriedchicken, not different. Pepsi-poison with that?
