jeriatric junkland

JERIATRIC JUNK LAND
As Baby Jesus is my witness, I fear for the safety of my in-laws. The NOL's daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law are a trio of Keystone Kops, as much as I love them and acknowledge them as being some of the nicest folks I've ever met. They are going to get themselves hurt, bumbling through life oblivious to everything not of their unicorn reality. They sold the house ( probably at the top of the market-God does look after children, drunks and idiots ) and bought an RV to live in ( good thing he is a handyman- the brand new unit was falling apart within weeks, and at a price I wouldn't spend on a house ), and went chasing jobs.
*
That is actually working out for them, and I'm happy that the population of Nevada has been reduced again. Only about a minimum of a million folks to go. Hell, we get rid of enough of these Cali rejects and maybe even Vegas would be worth living in again. Anyway, before they took off for greener pastures, I had offered them the use of one of my vacant lots to park on. All they needed was a gennie, some solar panels and a tank to haul in water from their constant town trips.
*
Well, honestly and with absolutely no hyperbole, I was looked upon as if I had suggested they sacrifice a virgin, violate its corpse and then run over a kitten after dropping the N Bomb apropos to nothing. Haul water!!! They were NOT savage primitive barbarians, thank you very much! I was frankly amazed at the violent response. I mean, mom is a Yuppie Bitch, but daughter and dad are as redneck as they come. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. Regardless, I was persona non grata there for some time.
*
I've already told the tale of my fathers violent reaction against turning down the thermostat to help with the bills, and he is a macho sports dude retired cop. Not a pussy in anyone's book. And today, I had a minion write me ( he suggested this fine article idea ) and describe his experience with an older couple. They were stuck in a town gone bad and exploring options to move. They were in top shape, even regular gym members ( not exactly in their dotage ).
*
When junk land with a mobile home was suggested, their response was along the lines of “we're too old to go primitive”. A mobile home! Hell, to me, a mobile home would be moving up in the world. All that extra space, and really easy to add insulation to. My daughter, living in the ghetto to go to school and pinching pennies, has no interest in free land here in Elko, and her brother, tough as nails Marine, won't go from semi-tropical Carolina ( I think they are in the process of moving from South to North ) to the cold of Nevada ( they lived here a few years as wee ones, but culturally they are Southern ).
*
What is with people? This insane reaction to Collapse Now And Avoid The Rush? What makes people want to be retirement age and still work at Amazon? From all I've heard, the warehouse job at Amazon works you like you are a twenty year old. And grandma thinks that is easier than living off grid? How can people still think a full paycheck provides any security, when the cost of living is so insane ( if your city has any jobs, the apartments start out at half your take home pay, if you are lucky ).
*
And what difference does living on grid make if you are as big of a pig as I've seen from many people? They use so much toilet paper to inexpertly wipe their ass, they clog up the pipes ( after having flushed tampons, cigarette butts, secret love letters from an affair and small pet rodents down the pipes ) and live with overflowing crappers. How much worse is that from hauling sewage into town?
*
The power is always going out, from overpopulation and the power company laying off people who used to fix the aging infrastructure, as the corporation desperately tries to make up the loses from the bond market. How worse is it to use a bit less power and generate their own? City water is what you'll be drinking regardless of where you live ( unless well supplied from rain ), but in town the rates keep going up to pay for bureaucratic incompetence. Wouldn't it be better to not subsidize others sewage and golf course use? Here is a Fun Filled Fact from, I think, Aesop.
*
Twenty-five years after the LA earthquake, the city STILL has no idea of where all the water and sewer lines are that ruptured. I mean, DAMN!, I thought the folks had it bad in New Orleans, where the OtherColor Condos were still piles of moldy used lumber. What has LA been doing with all the tax money that whole time? Building public transportation nobody uses? Paying into the broke CALPERS program? Bribing the Oh-Pressed Minorities from rioting again? If a city water main break causes a sinkhole, does the insurance pay or is that an Act Of God? And WHY does everyone want to use these decrepit systems?
*
Here is another one of my half baked theories ( go ahead, ask me. Yes, I have, literally, thousands ). If you don't see the monster, he can't see you. Every eight year old was an anti-monster device called a bedspread. And almost every adult in this country ( well, the world, really. Even Bush Bitches probably pine for a better life and so refuse to fully acknowledge reality ) acts like that little kid. If they ignore the collapse, it can't be happening. You see, just ask them. Greedy corporations are responsible, not diminishing resources. There is no Peak Oil-either the Big Oil Companies are evil or Fracking Oil is just as good as regular oil.
*
Hell, it is all liquid and flammable, right? Must be same-same. Because the US grew lots of crops when tractors were first introduced, we'll be the global grain producer forever more. The system isn't broken, it is just crooked politicians ( as if there was any other kind. Looking at you, TheEconomicCollapseBlog Dude! ). If people actually admitted the public utilities were broken and limping along, that would bring forth the monster from the closet. So to their dying breath, denial.
*
More than a river in Egypt, to you and me, a proud lifestyle to the other 99.999999% of the population. To include everyone you think might be a fellow tribe member. Denial Til Death! That means, they don't believe you about light discipline and marauders, and even if they stay awake during guard duty, most likely they go outside on the porch, leave the door open, and go smoke a cigarette in front of God and everybody. Don't believe me? YOU are in denial. People individually are retards.
*
People together are even more stupid. The only reason any of us are alive is because, by accident, someone stumbled on the right way to form an infrastructure that protected them. Now, nobody knows what that system is or how it works, and its demise from lack of proper inputs is unrecognized. Between denial and mental retardation, nobody knows crap. And as much time and effort as I try to point out how retarded people are, they ignore me. I still try. Tomorrow, even though it is futile and no one will listen, the best way a geriatric can get out on junk land with the minimum amount of disruption or hard work.

  1. Your final paragraph nails it. Burning down the house to the cheering of the crowd.

Yup. I am in denial. Sort of like a vacation.

  2. It’s starting to get harder to find junk land now, after the mass exodus of others from the blue states that they ruined. You can still find it reasonably priced in the form of desert land of course, but for how much longer, no one knows. If I had to do over again, I’d buy in North Dakota. That’s right, friggin North Dakota with -40ยบ winters. Last I checked that state was losing population. Not a particularly good real estate investment, but an excellent investment from the standpoint of keeping leftwing idiots at a bay. But plan on earth sheltered right off.

I totally know what you mean about roughing it, and trying to explain it to others. Several years ago when I attended church, there was this cute girl that I was trying to woo. Her ears perked up when she heard that I lived on a farm (In actuality, my parents farm). I mentioned that I wanted my own farm, and then went on to describe how far from the city limits that I wanted to live. She replied “Oh no, I would never want to live that far away from the city”. This was back before I knew what the term survivalist meant. I didn’t know that at some point, such a move would be necessary. I only knew, even back then, that people sucked, and that I wanted to get as far away from as many of them as I possibly could, ideally with the cute girl. Oh well, I’m glad it didn’t work out. Being an LDS is no mean feat, and takes a serious amount of dedication, so I’ve switched religions, and now I’m a devout atheist :D (Nah, just kidding. I wouldn’t quite go that far, so agnostic might be a better term).

For a geriatric, I suppose the good Ol’ tried and true, junk land with the trailer hauled on it, is about as easy as it gets. I gotta say though, nothing sucks worse than an unheated trailer in winter time. And if you can afford to heat one, then you’re probably better off in terms of being a survivalist, and can probably afford a better shelter. Eventually though, heating fuel will be through the roof, cost wise, so plan accordingly. If you’re a lucky individual, unlike myself, and don’t have to get up 65 times a night to urinate, get a cold weather synthetic sleeping back, climb in it, and sleep the night away. But if you’re like that, you can probably also get by with a lesser shelter.

    1. Yeah, no surprises tomorrow. Pretty much, RV on junk land. I THINK I added a few less than beat to death points. I'll leave the minions to decide.

  3. Some people listen to you and believe you. I do. Thank you for writing about it.

    1. If I can warn enough folks in time, help those who help themselves, I've hopefully atoned for many less than stellar moments in my life.

  4. You are right Jim. I think a lot of folks who can't go pro and deep throat the whole prepper-survivalist-off grider type of lifestyle is because they have amatuer or milk toast weaknesses or tendancies. Thus they should just self relegate themselves as low b grade acts or a simple fluffer role. Some just don't get it.

    1. Milquetoast. Yeah, I can never remember that one either ( spell-check makes me look smarter ). I can understand folks not living off grid. As long as you are prepared to, and have some practice and the land is close. Weekends and vacations on the junk land don't call for you to give up luxury while you can get it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, folks.

  5. In places that don't have a shallow water table, which rules out most of western Oregon where I live, could you not combine the RV/camping trailer concept with the earth sheltering concept, and have someone with a front end loader scoop out a trench 10 ft deep x 20 ft wide x the necessary length for your trailer? You would then pour a concrete pad in the bottom for the trailer (for its legs, to be precise) to rest on. Block winter winds at the sides and back of the trailer with sheets extending from the top of the trailer to the edges of the trench. The trench sides will have to be dug/collapsed from vertical to a slope, maybe concreted partway up, in order to prevent collapse. Pooling of water during heavy rains and cracking of the concrete due to uneven settling would be a problem. What else am I missing?

    1. You are covering it, right? Why else bother?

    2. Not covering it. The point is to get the amenities of a trailer/RV with the bullet-stopping protection of earth. I wonder if a trailer would have the structural strength to resist the ground pressure from the side, let alone ground pressure from above. The old-fashioned trailers with round roofs would be better in that regard.

    3. With just a little more money, you can cover it and get a far better year round temperature range. You just need an inch of dirt to keep the plastic from degrading. It won't be 50 all year, like a roof of six feet of dirt would, but far better than what a/c or propane can deliver ( unless you pour $100's in a month ). As far as the RV holding up to pressure-NO! Not the tiniest amount. I'm a dumb ass when it comes to engineering and such, but I know how crappy they make those things. Of course, you could try ferrocement and might have much better luck. That is the only way I'd try even with my steel body 1965 van, let alone an RV.

    4. Both are close guys. If you have land room, berm up large perimeter higher than tallest compound element. (That will be the peak of a shed roof that covers your modicum level rv camper unit. A shell garage for weather mitigation.) We had berms all around nato nuke storage areas as well. Ukraine conflict had bulldozers cutting hull deep trenches for armor, artillery or mortars, etc. Line of sight concealment and line of shot-shrapnel protections. The only way to go in lieu of unicorn militia bunkers.

      Stay frosty.
