early, disciplined, winning 2

EARLY, DISCIPLINED, WINNING 2
Early to prepping means you have more options. Options are good. Options can save your life. If you are late to prepping, such as, say, you just found my site, the spiritual successor of Kurt Saxon who was the only frugal prepper before me as even his competitors who pretended to be frugal were only giving you the cheapest way to build a concrete bunker atop a mountain armed with the cheapest semi-auto carbine, you still aren't too late. You will probably never get past bare bones prepping, but it can be done easy enough under a grand ( including junk land down payment ).
*
( HERE is the short/updated version of The Frugal Survivalist ). The only thing that you need to do is do whatever you must to get prepped now. Me? I'd advocate selling the car and finding some junk land within biking distance of town. Don't worry if it is desert. It is much cheaper to store grain for decades than buy land to grow grain. With rain catchment you can raise chickens. Problem solved ( no where near as nifty as gardens and goats, but you get to survive with what you brought to the party ).
*
The only idiots that won't prepare early are the fools with shrunken testes, smaller balls than their wife who needs a hair dryer to survive, guys that think they need semi's, freeze dried and FLIR's. Unless you can feed your semi for tens of thousands of rounds, don't get one. Freeze dried tastes like crap, and you are supposed to store what you eat. And FLIR scopes are just Super Ninja Couch Warrior toys ( as is most survival gear priced to pay for its advertising ). Prepping early is easy-if you are disciplined.
*
Discipline is easy to do, also. You just never pick the easy thing. You just pick the thing that needs done. That means you exercise when it is cold and you are tired. It means you never spend everything you have, no matter how little you make. It means smart instead of easy. It means “what can I do without” rather than “what is the most I can afford”. Discipline is saying NO to yourself and others. No, Dear, you cannot have a five bedroom three bath in the middle of the Los Angeles urban deathtrap. You can have an RV in the middle of nowhere.
*
Don't like it? They make plenty of other female crotch, even in different flavors. You are the weakest link-good bye. It means saying no to dear old mom. You want to die in this house? I want a harem and a treasure room full of gold. Tough Crapsky. Life is full of disappointment. Yeah, mom, remember all those soggy nasty vegetables I had to eat? Remember my toy I had to share with Cootie Cody next door, which he broke? What did you tell me mom? Yeah, get over it. Pack your bags if you want me to keep wiping your ass.
*
This crap is easy. You just need to say NO. And all that leads into the last of your new commandments, Winning. You want to win at the game we call the apocalypse? Your ass better be Early and you better stay Disciplined. And then and only then can you make the third commitment of being a winner. That doesn't mean you are the guy that stabs your hiking buddy in the leg so the grizzly bear gets him instead of you. It means you started preparing for the hike early so you have a rifle.
*
You didn't drink yourself stupid while there so you saw the bear. Discipline. And you are prepared to sacrifice your buddy if it is the last resort, because he was the Hipster that didn't believe in the Second Amendment and he was the idiot drinking rum like it was liquid oxygen***. Being Not Last means you do your best but you still must do things to win. Not hurting folks unless they deserve it, but NOT helping, also. That is part of being a man, doing the Hard Crap. Like putting your dog or horse out of its misery, or telling the wife to nicely and politely Hump Off when she wants to rescue and feed all those war orphans.
*
Most people don't WANT to be first in the race. It takes too much effort and sacrifice. They don't want to make the hard choices. And that is fine in modern life. You can run the race just to stay in shape. Today, winning means being a giant douche and cheating. The paradigm forced into place without our consent dictates exactly that. You want to be a nice guy? You can't finish first. But the apocalypse? A different story.
*
You can still be Not A Dingus. You don't have to be an Attila. You don't have to be Charlie Manson. What you have to be is a hard ass. You have to make hard choices for those you love. If that means refugees wanting to join you will eat all your food, hump them. Hump them with a stick. The wife probably will want to let them in ( “god will provide” ). Or the Soy Boys. They have the luxury of weakness now ( “let the Ebola Bush Bitches in, America was built by immigrants” ). Women always have the option of weakness.
*
You want to win, you can't be weak. That simply means love, compassion and sacrifice for the tribe, and none for non-tribe. None. What part of None is hard to understand? You want to be some great giving sharing religion? Fine. AFTER the die-off. Not during. Geez, what a dumb ass. Why do you think I try to pound into your head the End Of Surplus? It isn't because I love living pre-Oil Age ( where will my books come from? ).
*
It is because if you don't grasp the concept of limited resources, you can't realize what you must do to husband yours. You also don't understand how we don't need to run OUT of resources to get in trouble, we just have to run out of ENOUGH. We are close to another civil war here because there is no longer ENOUGH. Yes, I understand it takes a special kind of stupid to invite in more people as we run out. That is just their Denial Phase, just as Fracking Oil is for a lot of other peoples. Not judging! I'm honestly trying to help here.
*
It takes an evolutionary freak to be Early, Disciplined and Winning. Why do you think those Special Forces tried to disqualify everyone? Well, they probably don't today, what with casualties, and budget/mission creep, but you take my point. They knew few people could hack it. That goes for survivalists also. Few can do it, past the Shopping Hero phase. The problem with those guys is that only Darwin is there to flunk them out of the course. If you thought your Drill sergeant was a penis, wait until you make the wrong choice and turn down the evolutionary dead end.
*
That's an ambush you won't be walking away from! This survival stuff IS fun. It is a great hobby. But to do it right takes a whole other level of commitment and work. The sad part is ( sad as in indicative of our modern culture ) that is is ONLY returning to the normal life we've lived for a few hundred thousand years, before obscene surplus. It is just what we taught people to do all those years. Be smart, be hard, do it right to survive. It WAS normal and now it is so...incomprehensible. Sigh. Jesus Weeps.
*
[ ***Being part of a tribe and deserving help means you must also fulfill your obligations. A drunk stupid buddy doesn't deserve you risking your life because by his condition he both endangered you AND did nothing to help you as a tribe mate. Your hiking buddy is more of an acquaintance than a friend, and certainly NOT part of your tribe. Know the difference between those used as companions and those sacrificed for as tribe mates. As Mountain Guerrilla says, are they “shovel and quicklime friends?”. For a tribe member, you put yourself between them and the bear ].

  1. “Options are good”

That’s what Desmond’s parents told him, and look where it got him :D

  2. re:
    'news to me' department

We operate a family farm near the outskirts of Eugene Oregon fUSA.

We could use a flatbed trailer, so I'm looking around at websites this fine Saturday morning. Then, I notice the fine print at the bottom of one list of potential trailers on a dealer site.

Did you know our fine representatives in the fine capital of Salem Oregon 'enacted' a fine new tax on vehicle dealers... to be collected from vehicle purchasers?

And I quote "The Oregon Dealer Privilege Tax" taxes Oregon vehicle dealers for the privilege of offering vehicles to purchasers.

Selling vehicles, including a trailer to a farmer so produce can be moved to eaters, is a 'privilege'. Not a private transaction between willing seller and able buyer, not a private transaction between two private individuals.

Not a 'right'. A privilege. Graciously allowed by our representatives.

    Why do we bother?

    1. Ah, because the alternate is starving or getting AIDS in prison? I feel your frustration, but I think they are just warming us up for true serfdom. Look at the Bill Of Rights and tell me which one is still a right? Even the one about quartering troops is void through taxation keeping the troops comfy ( but Jim, support our troops! How about I just support our militia which is actually defensive rather than our colonial troops? No disrespect to the fighters, your heart is in the right place )

  3. Village ProtectionJuly 13, 2019 at 10:39 AM

Bison, do you have any suggestions about a good number of people to have on a small farm in a village-type situation? I'm thinking of protection and security, not growing food (at least not right away).

There would be a number of farms in the village. So there would be protection for each farm and then protection for the village? Any ideas how that might work?

    1. If you are in mountainous terrain, you need enough offense to reach out and secure entrance points. Not necessarily manned points 24/7-you should be blocking those points and have the patrols able to ambush those getting around and in ( make it as difficult as the Vietnamese getting the arty up in the mountains overlooking the French-open roads or bridges making trade easy also make invasion easy ). If you live on open ground you need a lot more military force to push your holdings out far enough to be able to give up ground when invaded, with the troops necessary for that. Looking back at the Dark Ages, a lot of tiny villages with minimal combatants, defense was the primary means of protection. But that was when neither you nor your enemy had the surplus energy to demolish defensive works. We don't have that luxury today. You need to plan for offensive defense.

  4. Lord Bison, you're making this whole survival schtick unfun. I was seriously looking forward to playing the part of Attila 😩.

You are absolutely dead center on with this:
"It is much cheaper to store grain for decades than buy land to grow grain".

That line coupled with your exhortations (won't call them preachings) to get thee to the hills & leave the flatland to the soon-to-be flatliners (if I may paraphrase)

I get tickled with some folk and their mania to create a 1910 era farm. Cows, goats, 3 breeds of chickens, hogs (pure blood Tamworths no less), guineas, barn cats, green parrots etc. A whole darn menagerie.
On top of growing quinoa, acai berries, spelt, tepary beans, Tibetan garlic, 5 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, 3 types of basil, and purple carrots.

Not ridiculing (much) because I think a spectre haunts their sleep. They acknowledge something, kinda, maybe, you never know is wrong. However, they seem to confuse "motion" for "progress". I think it's called cognitive dissonance.
Lots of us suffer the malady but instead of expending time on spelt and Thai basil we expend $$$ on "kit", semis in weird ass caibres, BOBs & Eddie Bauer Edition Ford Expeditions...(damnit, dont care what you say, FLIR stays on my Santa list this yr, again).

Again, another Bison observation right dead center:
"that (i.e. survivalism) is ONLY returning to the normal life we've lived for a few hundred thousand years, before obscene surplus.

Boy howdy, ain't that true. Lots of people are gonna be bitch slapped when Mother Nature's rubber band snaps back. Most won't get back up. Of course, frackin will continue to serve the diminished population who will have survived The Great Famine when blight wipes out grain worldwide.

Folk just want to ignore 2nd most profound truth of the universe...ENTROPY. I blame poor parenting and the ONE EYED DEVIL (No, not your "Mr. Johnson", I'm referring to TV & now computers/smart phones)

What is most profound truth you ask? Lord Bison's luxuriant locks. Truth be told,I have neglected performing absolutions in that regard recently.

One favor to ask Lord Bison...when you wrote about hiking in bear country with a hipster it wasn't clear what the rifle is for. Are we to shoot the bear or the hipster (for bear bait)?
Please clarify, lives depend on it.
    Thanks

    1. LOL! :) No, the rifle really was for the bear. I will give this to you on fracking. I didn't see it coming as a Can Kick, at all. I'm actually impressed how well it worked. I'd love to be wrong for another ten years, but the unfolding economic Big Flush will shutter all those high finance operations, leaving the gunk in the ground. This one should be a whopper. Pensions, Social Security, 401k's, deflation ( as much as we were able to have ), I'm thinking we say goodbye to it all, soon. Aren't earthquakes exponential? A 2.3 is double a 2.2, if I recall correctly ( I could be off on that ). Using the earthquake analogy, the '08 crash was a 5.0. This next one should be around a 7 or 8. I say this not as a finance guru, but as one simply observing that we survived the Tech Wreck by creating conditions for the far worse 08 fall. To survive the US banks troubles with derivatives in 08, we mortgaged and cashed in the entire global economy. I wonder if we can conceive how bad it will be.
