a FLIR scope away 3 of 3

A FLIR SCOPE AWAY 3
Calories are cheap.  The only issue is when you are stocking a LOT of them beforehand, or trying to get a high quality calorie. Of course, my go-to answer is always wheat, wheat, wheat ( Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! ), and I know this isn’t usually what anyone wants to hear. In fact, the average response seems to be as if I were suggesting that you all engage in consuming my ass.  Which hurts deeply since I’m only trying to help.  Cheap, healthy and tasty, pick one.
*
That applies to freeze dried, canned or dry goods.  Air dried still gets one out of three because while tasty and MORE healthy, you still kill a lot of the beneficial nutrients even under low heat ( for instance, bread with sprouts is BETTER than regular flour bread, but it still isn’t BEST which is raw and fresh spouts ).  Only whole kernel wheat, in my estimation, gets two out of three.  You can’t beat its health aspects nor its price, so I won’t argue with you that it can to some taste like cardboard.  No, it isn’t a complete food.  That is where the cost part of the equation enters.
*
Far too many folks make the mistake of shopping Full Luxury for their survival stockpile.  There are a LOT of different steps to food storage.  At the top of the pyramid is your day to day regular eating, with eggs and cheese and meat and potatoes and desert and fast food and all in all yummy excess caloric intakes.  Most preppers try to duplicate that menu for after the apocalypse.  Which is SOOO realistic because, you know, factory beef and Mexican produce and three thousand mile salad AFTER the collapse.  #1 prepping mistake is Continuity.
*
You need to start at the BOTTOM of the Desirability Pyramid.  First is calories.  NOT nutrients per se.  Yes, try to get the healthiest nutrients as possible, thank you Captain Obvious.  Which is why I say whole kernel wheat rather than white rice, white pasta, white flour or white sugar.  Because the first has far more nutrients AND fiber and the rest are empty calories.  Sometimes only the White Foods will do ( racist! ), but you try to minimize them. But the Prime Objective is calories.  When you are starting out, Calories First.  An empty calorie will keep you alive better than a No Calorie.
*
People are so focused on Best Calories, heavy on the animal protein and heavy on vegetables in a vain attempt at Taste Diversity ( diversity is our strength! ), that they come no where near ENOUGH calories.  Bad Spanky!  Bad! No biscuit for you!  Calories first.  THEN move up to nutrients.  Go from empty calories to far more nutritious calories to complement those empty calories.  Then you can move up the pyramid again to be closer to a modern diet.  THEN, after all the post-collapse calories are secured, you move up to the best part.
*
The pantry and freezer stockpile that exactly duplicates your daily diet which is great for unemployment and stands in for money savings.  Plus, it allows you to bulk buy and buy on sales and NEVER must you pay full price for groceries again ( except fresh produce ).  That stockpile should be about a six month supply.  The post-collapse stockpile should start at a year, and I’d be restless at night until it hit a three year supply.  Good gravy, its grain and oil and some vitamin pills.  Anyone can afford it.  But have it before the better food.
*
I stock all wheat kernels, with almost zero white flour.  But I’ve also eaten whole wheat my whole life, and in times of severe financial stress I’ve eaten the bulk of my daily calories in whole wheat and butter.  I like the taste and I’m used to eating a lot of it.  Your mileage is most likely far different.  I assume most of you prefer white flour over whole wheat.  You’ll also need to do this if there is no feed and grain store nearby ( Wal-Mart wheat is near a buck a pound, feed store is 35cents after container  ).
*
So you go long white flour and supplement that with whole kernel flour.  Half and half is optimal, but you could go lower on the whole flour.  White flour finally came down after ten years to 28cents a pound ( which speaks of economic collapse in an overpopulated world of crop failures ).  1 to 3 whole kernel to white flour sees you at 46cents a pound ( remember, compared to $1lb for the bucket wheat at Wally ). Which is usually cheaper than rice, and is more nutritious and a more variable menu.  Go Wheat, rice sucks!
*
White Foods last a good ten years plus with little taste difference ( there were no nutrients to lose ).  White flour might taste slightly off after five years, but it won’t taste terrible and will still deliver calories.  Again, yes, this is sub-optimal for a diet.  Yes, in a stressful and combat filled existence high quality food is best.  But you cannot afford all that many MRE’s ( price and taste are out, pick calorie and protein rich ).  One MRE equals two weeks of wheat calories.  You want to starve by day two rather than day sixteen?
*
Always start at quantity over quality, in case the end is indeed nigh tomorrow.  Then work your way towards quality.  All wheat, from the feed store, in a container is $500 for FIVE years of calories.  Yes, you want supplements to those calories.  But if the worst happens at least you have that base calorie unit.  Enough calories to look for more calories.
*
Okay, obviously this series of articles isn’t going to stop at three installments.  But I’m a bit bored already and I know you are, since you are easily distracted by shiny glitter on unicorns.  So, if I do continue this, it will be at a latter date.

  1. And if you choose to sprout the wheat, you get a lot of health benes.

  2. Mr D .... Wrenchr hits the nail with his comment

Your past admonition for folks to buy Vit C deserves repeating .... powders trump tablets. Scurvy sucks, and will re-appear in a flash when sportiness arrives

If anyone can do so, plant wolfberry. Spreads by suckering, alkaline tolerant and drought resistant, grows lethal thorns ( closer to cactus needles ) and the leaves are edible ... and taste OK. Go to Phoenix Tears in UT, and get 3-tr. rootstock. Huge amounts of C and anti-oxidants.

    1. Even tablets should last three plus years after the experation date, and still relatively cheap at Wally.

    2. Fresh dandelion greens or roots have almost twice the vitamin C per gram as Wolfberry... and its a lot easier to find or cultivate. You can eat the entire plant.

  3. A couple points:

We live near the outskirts of Eugene Oregon, so the bread-basket-of-the-world == north California == is a hop-and-a-skip 400-miles away.

At church, I announced I was headed past that area, so our prep group chipped-in for a bulk purchase from the family-operated cash-and-carry store of the rice growers in Corning, Lundberg Family Farms.

We acquired 20# and 25# bags of organic gourmet rice varieties for around US$8 each. Eight dollars. Trading a few scraps of worthless paper scrip for years of food, amazing!

The labels give instructions for sprouting.

    Two:
May I suggest foraging to complement your freeze-dry and MREs and other storage. Nobody in their right mind relies on a single point of failure, aka 'Normalcy Bias'.

For example, Oregon is infested with the yuge rodents called 'Nutria'. They are everyplace, big as coons, are born ready to graze alongside the tribe, and reproduce at three months old. And they are so stupit, you think they were raised in a ghetto slum... walk up, bop 'em on the snoot with a baseball bat.

The Ew in Corvallis Oregon tested the meat. Their tests indicate Nutria is far more nutritious than other rodents such as rabbit or beaver.

And this goes back to 'know your area'. Know your neighbors, know your invaders.

    Third:
Bison make little joke about White people, nyet? As a humble Caucasian, I prefer the title dujour 'Person Of Light'; I live in a 'Community Of Light'. Anytime I spot a Person Of Color == such as our recent trip to the diversity-central central-casting Community Of Color called California == I notice my amazement, release it, and move on.

But I avoid 'bread of light' in my diet, thank you very much.

I know there are a few who got lost on the way to Reno or Las Vegas, but almost never see them. Thank goodness, because the Latino population is going to be enough of a foe in the CW.

    3. Since you live in Oregon, have you investigated Azure Farms? They'll have an organic bulk food drop (by big rig) located somewhere near you. They also travel to the bordering states, once a month.

    4. I know. I did 40 years down there in the burbs of a decent size metropolis and the negro's were every where. Crime was on the moon and there was no shortage of the mexicans neither. I actually had to run some mexicans out of my yard one time cause they were stealing water out of the hose.

The last straw for me happened as I was sitting at my workbench reading an Ayn Rand book in the garage with the garage door open and a mexican kid rode his bike all the way into the garage and crashed it into my workbench 4' away from me. I couldn't believe my eyes. I grabbed that bike with one hand and the kid with the other and threw em both out on the street. Then I went in the house and told my wife I had had enough, we're getting out of here.

It took another year, but we did just that, and I have never been back nor do I intend to. The only mexicans I see now are when I eat at Casa Del Sol on my birthday. And I have no problem not seeing those people, mexicans and negro's, proving diversity is not the strength the american communists claim it is. It is a severe handicap for all but the handlers.

    5. I never had an issue with Mexicans, all my life. Grew up around them, married two of them, they are my B-POD neighbors. But I know now, after witnessing Cali, that we are screwed demographically. Not sure if the system will die first, or me, but I'm glad either one will be soon. Can't stand the thought of being a Wigger in my own land.

    7. Even liberals are full of shit when it comes to actually practicing diversity. Ever notice how these same morons pushing for it, live a good safe distance from the ghetto, all the while, everyone else is labeled a nazi, for not thinking that a wide open border is a good idea :D

As far as Mexicans go, in my opinion, the absolute worst of the lot, are the one’s that have been here a generation or two, because they tend to have that chicano, gang banger attitude. Most of the Mexicans that I’ve met, that are from Mexico, are generally nice people. But still, unlike stupid, self-hating, white liberal idiots, never forget that they will always do what’s right by their own. And when the anchor babies of the illegals are eventually promoted via affirmative action, to the management and HR positions in the elites corporations, guess whom they’re gonna hire over who? And guess who’s not going to have a problem with it?

Speaking of ghetto’s, I don’t know if you’ve ever come across this channel Jim, but it’s funny as hell! These guys apparently live near the hood. As a hobby, they booby trap bicycles, and other steal-able items, and leave them out for unsuspecting thieves, and video tape the results. Yeah, you can probably already guess which demographics mostly fall victim to these stunts :D

  4. Why forage?

    Agriculture needs rain.
    Agriculture needs defending.
Agriculture needs guards, and guards need payment.
    Between seasons, guards are idle.
    Between seasons, produce needs storage.
    Storage needs accountants.
    Accountants need managers and administrators.
Managers and administrators need voting stooges to maintain / increase their position / power.
    Power needs guards.
Guards need criminals to justify their existence.
Agriculture is a very few crops, primarily grains and root vegetables.
Upon the invention of agriculture, all our modern diseases took hold.
    Hence, agriculture needs physicians.

Knowing me the way I do, I think I will stick with semi-nomadic foraging. How do you feel about complementing me?

    1. I plan on semi-nomadic herding, with raiding thrown in. Okay, as if I'd live that long. But one never knows. Hey, agriculture sucks, you are very correct. And I love the X begets Y. Sort of like the Horseshoe Lost poem.

  5. Food diversity used to be over the course of a year, not constant. When the sweet corn was ripe, we ate sweet corn til it came out our ears. Same thing for potatoes, veggies and specific fruits. Then there was the long winter/spring of canned and frozen stuff. Taste fatigue happened all the time. Probably why there were fewer obese people back then.

    2. It’s hard to believe that this was actually considered good tv at one time, but I guess we didn’t know any better :D

I actually thought that Jan was prettier than Marsha, and had little to be envious of there. Cindy, while young when the show started, was probably the cutest of them all. Apparently, little Cindy, while DJ’ing as an adult, got into a heated argument with some turd burglar, and told him to get bent, which got her fired as a result. Too bad; that she was fired for it that is :D

Wow, I looked the dad up, and was surprised to see that he died way back in 1992. I didn’t realize that it was that long ago. Oh well, that comes with the territory of engaging in a risky lifestyle choice I suppose.

    3. I don't think we considered it "good" TV, but just escapism or humor, both of what we always need. If it didn't age well that wasn't because it was worse than we thought but because it was too topical.

  7. Marge is a bad ass. Side note: Some folks can be acclimated to a carbo or wheat, rice, etc, diet. Have some meat or fat, as a side stock. I was just eating carbs or white foods, etc and got all queesy and weak knees. I went straight to red meat, and cooked up meat, potatoes, and shoveled it down. Felt much better, as I was all refugee p.o.w weak to the point I think my ability to fight out of a wet paper bag was compromised. Not good in a shit scenario. Maybe a one time off thing, but, be prepped for a dietary reaction or the need to fuel up for some sporty business. Canine teeth on the sides of your mouth for a reason
