oil economy lies 2

OIL ECONOMY LIES 2

Lie #1 The US is the worlds only military superpower, part two.

I won’t take up much of anyone’s time beating the issues of Girl Power myths to death.  Females do many things better than males, but soldiering is not one of them ( and soldiering isn’t even the same as being a warrior ).  We can agree on that, I think.  We can agree that high tech is a great Force Multiplier, but that it forms its own vulnerability issues ( already we are seeing signs of Russian tech superiority with our naval ships and that should frighten the crap out of everyone that understands the US rules world trade through its navy.  And this is BEFORE any other factors effect our reliance on tech.  We are getting our asses handed to us and that should be telling you how even higher tech is no longer our strength ).  And certainly we can agree that we are extremely vulnerable economically.  When you have a short decrease in the increase in the budget, and everyone gets stupid doing things like “borrowing” money from the civil servants retirement, and you are at a point where the yearly deficit is bigger than the total national debt when we of not too advanced years were starting out as young adults, and when the only economic growth was Bubble Fracking Industry magic and quantitative easing, I think we can all agree that sooner rather than later, This Sucker’s Going Down!

*

Culturally dysfunctional, organizationally impaired, reliance on the wrong weapons systems, the inability to afford what we have based on a crashing economy.  What else hampers our supposedly world class military?  As touched on earlier with the two hour verses one year airplane, not only is nothing easily replaceable, we cover this up by practicing the false economics of shrinking force size.  As already covered, a 95% force reduction, with the remaining 20-25% female.  A navy with ships in the thousands down to 250 ( +/-).   Divisions numbering around 75 down to 15.  We pretend to save money and replace quantity with quality but we spend more every year, hamper our weapons of dubious quality with poor doctrine and try to rule more of the world with less.  We are in worse shape than Britain in WWII ( and have as much success against opponents as the Italians did back then ).  They were broke after WWI but managed to still fight another world war prior to losing their colonies.  We still retain nominal control over ours but have nobody stronger to help us retain our possessions-our colonies will be lost overnight and we will not be able to force them back or even defend against any potential aggressors ( who attack our overseas areas, not the homeland.  See below ).  The military is under too many negative constraints, all of which will converge at the same time to handicap us at the exact wrong time.  This is what a paper tiger gets you.

*

I listed this lie as number one, as it is our biggest block to recognizing reality.  We can easily defend ourselves.  Even after decades of downsizing and allowing maintenance to be deferred, we still have a good enough nuclear shield.  Although not a guarantee, I still believe the odds are good nobody is stupid enough to use the nuke card.  Even terrorists have vulnerable retaliation points like Mecca.  But nukes will not be what holds our oil countries submitting to our protection racket in our corner.  Just like you can’t get boots on the ground cultural savvy intelligence by satellite, you can’t bribe with nukes rather than money or hold ground against insurgents with nukes.  After a certain point, nukes are irrelevant for all but guarding the castle walls.  We’ve allowed our military to whither in substance even as a shiny glittery façade was painted on at great cost.  We’ll learn this harsh reality soon enough.

Continued tomorrow with lie #2.

  1. Good post and something I hadn't thought about.

You make a great point that nuclear weapons are a great defensive weapon. But because they are so extreme, you can't just use them for medium to small attacks. Otherwise, you will be hung in the court of public opinion for not being fair.

It's similar to how your kids know that they can push you so far before they get spanked or grounded. Countries know that they can get away with a lot and only face a few air strikes or SEAL teams.

A country or terrorist group realizes that they can kill you with a thousand cuts rather than one big attack. A thousand Chihuahuas can kill you but if you bring out the big guns to defend yourself, YOU are the bad guy.

    1. A thousand Chihuahuas. That should be a horror film. Hell, they did birds.

    2. Imagine all of those pelts made into motorcycle jackets.

    3. Dude, the Chihuahuas would win. No pelts.

    4. “A thousand Chihuahuas can kill you”

Better double that amount. My mom has one, and it makes the toy poodle that we used to have look like Bruce Lee. My cat kicked its ass and sent it scurrying. It now trembles in fear at the sight of him!

Aside from peddling something like this to Paris Hilton, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and the rest of the New York penthouse crowd, what the hell is someone thinking when they purposely breed an absolutely worthless dog like this?

    5. They would all be trembling in fear and crap on you. A thousand of them would bury and suffocate you in their waste.

  2. It goes down, when it goes down. None of us can change any bit of what is ( likely to soon) take place so I don't worry about it too much. You can't fix stupid, and we have a powerful amount of stupid in the world today. Stupid has probably always been there, but it seems more noticeable today...

I do make preparations on a personal level to minimize it's effect on me. I don't see that there is anything else I can do.

As far as US military power (by the way the US of A has 12 of the 13 full sized aircraft carriers on the planet, I don't know too many countries that would want an angry carrier group parked off shore) and it's high tech toys I agree that while high tech stuff is a powerful additive to a power base. High tech things almost always need a rather extensive support system to keep them working.

I watched a WWII video on Tiger vs Sherman tanks. And while the Tigers were better in every way they needed more support (that wasn't there) and when a Tiger was knocked out of the war it was for good. While the Sherman's were rebuilt up to 6 times and put back into service. Our military has forgotten that lesson.

PS: France of all countries has the other carrier, who would have thought that France (that surrenders at the drop of a hat any time someone looks at them with anger in their eyes.) would have a full-sized carrier???

James have you ever read the book "Freehold"? It's about a powerful world (Earth) that takes on a small world (The Freehold) it's a good read and is a free download (PDF) from www.Baen.com Just look at Free Downloads on the Baen site to find it. It's a fairly good story.

    1. Yes, I did read Freehold. A darn fine libertarian military adventure. Full of holes logically, of course, but a fine novel.

    2. "You can't fix stupid..."

Very true, but some days I'd sure like to take a hammer and try.

  3. A bit off topic here, but I am 1 who always keeps an eye out for the balloon getting ready to go up.
I'm in the Southern California area and 4 days ago Vandenberg Air Base launched a Minuteman 3 missile 4000 miles towards Asian land (sucker has a 8000 mile range) and they splashed it down in the Pacific. Maybe to let the Asian powers that be we are ready.
The sky around here is full of military aircraft flying back and forth leaving their white trails 24/7, and my friends in the military have been put on limited alert.
News today stated China Has sent military planes to the China Sea area also.
Just a heads up to be ready for that balloon that we all talk about and hope Obammy doesn't push any buttons in his desire to be "leader for life"
Keep an eye to the sky and keep your powder dry Dr. James!

    2. Cali is politically insane, demographically part of Mexico/Central Am., on the back side of a 10-year drought with no rain forecast for the next 10, with only 3 sources of cash that can be depended on: Federal workers/active-duty military, good-weather tourism and silicon valley taxes on corporations and individuals. The CARB does not actually make an exportable product, and the cost to the economy is stunning.

I see so many out of State plates in pdx. This is FEB, not tourist-season. They haven't changed the plates since moving here (best place in uSA to be homeless! Free food 45 places every 2 hours! Law specifically allows street camping on sidewalks! Too addicted or mentally ill? Free $1400/mo private apartment! Homeless/no-job is the most-effective tax-avoiding strategy! As everywhere, friendly & functional is good, but "acting" crazy brings the Free Stuff Army!)

    3. FCA, Free Crap Army, seems like an invading menace. But how long can states/feds pay them? Look at 2009 when all smaller governments went broke quick and began furiously slashing budgets. Would you want to be homeless in Detroit? FCA are sitting pretty now. It won't last long after the next economic crash.

    4. pdx is an airport on the southern shore of the mighty Columbia River, a little East of where the Willamette River joins the Columbia. There's a minor City called Portland there that believes it is the most important part of a big State. A major industry is "planning", like Lenin made plans for Stalin to implement.

The above should take you to a site where you can sign up for closeouts on Danner and Lacrosse boots. I have purchased several pairs for my son and he really likes them. They last a long time too.

  6. It will hit the fan. Something major will happen before Obummer leaves office, or is supposed to leave office. Putin is a smart man. He'd rather face a moron like Obummer that risk facing a real leader. Not that we have any running.

    1. Same here. I watch almost zero TV and never any of the mainstream stuff. Got rid of the dish about 4 years ago and have over the air channels now.

Accidently heard obammy on the radio about 2 years ago and it wasn't until his diatribe was over that I found out it was him. I wasn't paying attention to it real close but I got the impression the person I was listening to was white, and was surprised at the end when the host said it was obammy.

I have never seen video of obammy in any form.

It doesn't take much effort to NOT see and hear these people and I'll go so far as to say that you have to expend effort to see and hear them.

Reading about them online is about all I can bear and even that is too much most of the time.

They could all vanish today and it wouldn't effect my life at all but my attitude would improve greatly.

    2. Awe now, we all know that you were down worshipping at the tower of Trump. When he came to Helko the other day (snark lol )
As most always, we think alike on these matters Jim.

    3. Going off script is the problem with both current likely contenders for the figurehead position. Trump, because well, he is the epitome of arrogant blowhard so full of his own self importance and loud about it, he is likely to say something wrong before the handlers can prevent it. Hillary because she is liable to get blood in her eye about something she wants and act in an underhandedly vengeful way against anyone she decides should be her target - even perhaps her handlers...
Sanders or Cruz may actually be the most tractable choices for TPTB, but the establishment disdains them both for their _apparent_ willingness to stick to some of the principles they espouse.....
