Empires expand violently.  They don’t send an engraved invitation inviting their neighbors to come voluntarily join the democracy.  They are assimilated into the Borg.  With extreme prejudice.  White boys spent a couple of centuries trying to wipe out the original inhabitants of this continent.  They used one tribe against another, germ warfare, technological advantage and an unending influx of immigration to replace their casualties and grow their numbers.  It was nothing but greed and violence and the Whites were 100% convinced they were righteous and pure.  They didn’t mind using slavery to feed the growing army of fellow citizens to gain superiority, either.  As the proto-empire grew by hook or by crook, first colonizing the former white-brothers land in the South, then colonizing the Indians lands, switching to colonizing the former Spanish lands, after the land ran out we switched to colonizing lands overseas.  Then turned against our White brethren from the land of our origins to win the Industrial Revolution race.  Then again to win the Oil Age race.  Non peaceful, all violent.  To grow our empire.  The citizens at home made minimal sacrifices and were asked to do not much more than pay a creeping tax rate and to wave the flag when military parades were presented, and allow no fellow citizen to dissent under penalty of law and shunning.  In exchange, they received three times the daily number of calories needed, endless and mindless entertainment and if desired the ability to breed unchecked.  As long as the surplus remained, it was a swell deal.

Alas, even with a front row seat to the phlegm charged death throttle of our empire, few seem to appreciate all the violence that put it there, all that will be caused by the process of its demise.  Violence happens to other people when your empire is growing.  The average soldier experiences the training for violence but can with luck avoid its actual employment.  He is more mindful of the potential, so has at least the mindset to see its coming.  The civilians, on the other hand, have experienced a below normal level of violence personally, if they are in the right stage of empire, and only experience it vicariously through entertainment.  As the average empire prefers to experience peace and quiet at home so all its reserves and resources can be applied towards acquisition, non-violence is proactively encouraged and/or demanded with that goal in mind.  Violence becomes a non-concept.  Something existing outside their reality.  Luxury is endangered by violence, and that feeds the trend towards peace.  Easy living and reality avoidance and propaganda in place of education feed the trend.  Violence is portrayed as a sickness ( rehabilitate prisoners, medicate returning veterans ).  In time, all the intellectuals, in complete sincerity, push for more and more non-violence.  Villainizing and denying.  Reinforcing the need for all actions to embrace social harmony and demonize all violence.  Even self-defense, as with a lot of religions ( thou shalt not kill is NOT the correct translation.  Thou shalt not murder.  The difference?  Murder is not sanctioned by the state, but with a license, killing is ).
