DWELLING WISE 3 of 3

If you look at the time frame from the inception of the Federal Reserve Bank until today’s one quadrillion dollar derivatives Sword Of Damocles, it is hard not to notice the continuing noose tightening over everyone’s neck financially.  First the cities drew in immigrants to work factories, forcing land owners to become renters, then the factories closed due to overproduction causing unemployed homelessness, followed by the unemployed to be forced into military press gangs to become cannon fodder.  If you survived that you could go to college for free, kind of a “thank you very much for helping to colonize the free world for our profit”, then assume a mortgage in the suburbs along with a car payment, to work the job you went to school for ( you could skip school, continue renting the rest of your life as you worked a factory, until… ), or at least until all the factories closed down when oil went over $3 a barrel.  Then you got to retrain for another non-industrial job, no guarantee of getting one, but this time you had to pay for school with a loan.  You can’t walk to work, there are no trolley cars or safe places to live due to the city center being surrounded by ghettos, so you have car payments the rest of your life ( the only way Detroit can repeat sell is to offer total crap quality ).  Zoning laws change to require minimum square footage, professional bonded licensed contractors and laborers, city taxes double the initial cost of construction, cities are encouraged to hire more payroll promised pensions ( with easy central bank financing to keep balanced budgets unnecessary ) to insanely jack up the selling price of a home to stretch twenty year mortgages to thirty.  And etcetera.  There is nowhere to go but into the anal entry position.

You can’t play their game and hope to survive long term.  In almost all places the cost of housing has reached Lifetime Renting levels.  The only bone they throw you to stay in these areas is possible, not probable but possible, employment and a hook-up to the utility grid.  You need to ferret out the few remaining areas left with lax zoning laws.  And you need to build yourself, with local materials building to minimize energy usage.   People look at adobe, cringe at the massive amount of bricks they need, the physical labor, and go buy a stick built home with a thirty year mortgage ( mobile homes are approaching that payment period, and are built worse than Detroit cars ) that requires them to toil the rest of their lives for the bank and the utility company.  What?  You can’t shovel mud into a half dozen forms each day?  At the end of a year, how many bricks does that add up to.  Sand bag igloos are even easier, bypassing the brick and mortar.  If you are completely screwed physically, check out the cement and shredded paper process of building.  The bricks are a lot lighter ( and insulated ).

There are many ways besides debt to have a home.  Your biggest obstacle is finding a place to build it without an entire army of bureaucrats marching up your ass with fees and taxes and detailed costly directions ( who benefits most from “building codes to keep you safe“?  The dude who collects interest on the loan made bigger from higher construction costs ).  Of course, most but the worst places allow exemptions for under 100 square feet dwellings ( some 200 sq. ft. ).  If you care to walk outside to go to your next room, this could be your ticket to financial independence.   If you can’t even do that, and your mortgage and your property tax will be too high once the economy gets worse and your hours get cut, move to a more forgiving area, one that not all the residents feel their property values must be maintained at your expense.  If you can build one room for a few hundred bucks, the main cost being windows and roof beams, live there while you keep building for cash, before you know it you are living in a thousand square foot home that cost under $10k paid in cash- lower than the cost of your car.  Even that is extravagant.  You could have a small shack for living and one for storage, for a grand.  Then, you must move, weather change or crime sprees or government intrusion or economic opportunities elsewhere, it is not a lifetime investment.  Think like a peasant for your shelter, not like a member of royalty.

  1. Even in the people's republic of CA, we're allowed to have up to a 120 sq' non-permitted building in most counties (More than this in a few counties). But when I spoke to the building dept they told me that I could only legally camp on my land for two weeks at a time, unless I went the fully permitted route.

    This does concern me slightly, after purchasing my land near Elko recently, since you're pretty much out in the open out there. And I do worry about the potential for harassment at some point.

    For the price I paid for my Elko land, I do not regret my purchase. However I will say this. If you can afford wooded land, preferably with no immediate neighbours, it is a much better choice, and far easier to remain covert under the cover of trees.

    There are areas with little to no code enforcement, however when I previously investigated such properties, I also found that they were typically so remote, that employment opportunities would have been few to none.

    1. Elko is one of the few better counties as far as leaving folks alone. Course, you never know if it WILL change. A gamble. As for the desert, if you go underground you are almost as hidden as with a forrest. Not quite, but closer.

    2. Good to hear James, and I hope it stays that way for a long time?

      Skimmed through the $50 and up underground house book recently. In the section regarding code enforcement:

      “In the case of possible spotter aircraft, a few beams thrown across the excavation and some black polyethylene drug across that should give you hasty camouflage, yet another advantage unique to underground housing”.

      Since you were not harassed when you excavated your pit, the county probably never spotted your handy work. Which gives me more confidence to dig my own.

      Just submitted a review for your second Malthusian newsletter James. Don't know if anyone will read it (My review) but hopefully if they do, it will drum up a few more paying followers?

    3. If the county was getting cheap and going with Google Earth rather than spotter planes, I can see why they never tagged me for more taxes. My hole in the ground looks more like shading with that terrible resolution. And thank you. Any revue is helpful, not even non helpful ones. No comments looks like no one wants to read/buy. I'm getting about 20 minions a months reading. Let's hope that goes up to a less embarrassing number. Still, better than what my books sold for.

      I was wondering about this myself James, so I looked it up. Best that I can verify, Google only updates it images every one to three years. There are exceptions, perhaps such as a county request. But the images are never in real time.


      So the images of my just purchased land are not really valid. I hope like hell a band of meth cooking hippies have not set up shop!

    2. Little Stevie Wonder was a great entertainer for my MIL as a girl back in Winedot MI. He still has good hair.

  3. Just saw Little Stevie Wonder on the shit box 2 hrs ago and he was so heavily made up he looked like a cadaver. Mostly bald with some fake 3' dreds glued on the back.
