harvey prepper

HARVEY PREPPER
*
note: go here for one of the better books on off-grid living.  Free download, Rancho Costa Nada.
http://ranchocostanada.itgo.com/
*
note: holy hump, Batman!  Went to go get another bag of wheat as my last daily use one is a bit down past half.  Only $10 per fifty pounds, red winter.  I expected at least twice that, given the recent wheat crop failures.  Bought three, would have cleaned out their inventory if I had more plastic containers.  Buy, buy, BUY!!!!
*
This is one of the downsides of Moore’s Law.  Now that video cameras are way under $100 every swinging cheese dingus dill hole asswhore is on YouTube acting like a survivalist expert.  Good crapping gravy, I thought print sites were thicker than a hound dogs ticks with idiots on the soapbox.  Here I am, minding my own damn business, and I see something about an update on Texas.  I think, okay, nobody has been talking about Hurricane Harvey and the aftereffects, so I watch this seething turd.

*

In a nutshell, since people from other states donated to the charity ( and you can be sure whatever mouth breather was in charge skimmed off a big chunk in administration fees-that means “I’m getting a big ass salary to push papers, bitches! ) and the Cajon Navy lent a hand, that means people are good and helpful in emergencies and any prepper who thinks it will be dog eat dog and red in tooth and claw is paranoid and delusional.  WHAT???  What planet was this guy from?  I mean, yes, Planet Texas is a very weird place, but this guy immigrated there.

*

Literally, he isn’t a native Texan.  He was real proud to be one now, which is understandable, since even Texas is an improvement from Planet Dumbass.  Sorry, Texas dudes, but even accounting for East L.A. ( erroneously named “Las Vegas” ) Nevada is a much better place to hang your hat.  I’ve lived in both, and Texas is what I imagine Sarajevo was like twenty odd years ago.  Different cultures mashed together under an alias nation state, waiting to detonate.  Anyway, Texas is merely dysfunctional whereas California, my hatching place, has been a Failed State for generations.  I’m not judging.

*

So, according to The Clueless One, Hurricane Harvey proved preppers needn’t fear violence after a disaster.  Evidently, he doesn’t get out much in his new state, because if he didn’t stay cocooned in his Whitebread neighborhood, only venturing out in his forty thousand dollar pickup truck ( one assumes with a ten gallon hat ), he would know that in the best of times his Black neighbors to the east wish him harm and his little brown buddies to the south don’t much care for his pasty white ass either and would cave in his skull for the five bucks in coins in his ashtray if the death penalty wasn’t so freely administered there.

*

They are Texans too, right?  He has no clue of inequality, drug and illegal smuggling, racial disharmony or the economic collapse, does he?  That is BEFORE any natural disaster.  Texans have always thought in terms of Big.  Big ass terrible weather every season.  Big natural disasters.  Big oil discoveries.  And now, big ass populations.  Only Texans would think an overpopulated area mostly run out of oil and irrigated water is a great place to park for prepping.  So, big dumb asses also Texas does have.  Harvey is the height of prepping problems?  Really?  Nothing worse is going to happen?

*

See, right there is the main issue I have with short term preppers.  They fail to see anything wrong systematically.  Nothing wrong with the economy as long as they have a job.  No racial issues as long as they live in a Yuppie neighborhood.  The US used to be the global empire so it always will be.  We only need to vote in the right guy to solve all problems.  Technology has always and will always solve all problems.  Etcetera.  I could go on for articles, but the short summation is that when you only plan for bad weather, you make bad plans.

*

Why wouldn’t a generator solve all prepper problems, right?  It solves the hurricane grid down issue.  Why can’t MRE’s be the solution to all prepper food storage?  It works for hurricanes!  Why wouldn’t an AR be in every preppers arsenal?  It keeps the looters away after a hurricane.  Do you see where I’m going with this?  When you own a hammer, everything looks like a nail.  And when your prepper guru only preps for hurricanes then all his tools are for solving natural disaster problems.  Since he ain’t prepped for civilization collapse, denial and hubris solve that particular problem.

*

Now, I shouldn’t have an issue with this, you say.  Not all preppers are survivalists.  Not all short term preppers think they should be long term preppers.  No, I have no issue with individuals prepping as they see fit.  Pessimists will always assume the worst regardless and optimists will always be cheerful no matter the evidence to the contrary.  I understand I’m just as biased due to my temperament.  What I find unacceptable is when those supposedly teaching others make blanket statements about your safety based on wildly optimistic assumptions.

*

You say, hey, get a case of MRE’s and a generator and you’ll be fine.  Okay.  Anyone with a lick of sense knows they need more than that, even if all they do is read/watch the mainstream media.  Infrastructure interruptions are now in long weeks or short months duration, much longer than in the past.  That is kind of an obvious lie that doesn’t harm any but the idiots who deserve to die anyway.  But when you are commenting on human nature, and it is logically flawed, I feel you are being more of a danger.  Most people are living in bubbles.  Some are living in even narrower horizons, hemmed in by social media and electronic devices.  Most people who would become preppers are divorced from most reality.  They have no clues about sociology or anthropology, evolution or biology.

*

I mean, duh, right?  PC bitches think women are equal to men physically and share their mental processing.  Bigger dumb asses would be hard to find.  You must carefully explain to most people the reality of how humans treat each other.  And optimism plays a VERY small part.  When you think you are an expert in human interactions, and get it wrong, that is very harmful advice.  Certain Idaho Yuppie Scum Guru’s are clueless even as they pretend otherwise, and short term preppers are incapable of comprehending this as well.

*

If you really understood people, you wouldn’t be just short term prepping, would you?  Yes, it is great there are Natural Disaster Preppers out there.  Every extra person staying home and fed and watered is one less idiot taxing the collapsed infrastructure.  I just think they do the rest of us a grave disservice once they start opening their mouths.  It might be well meant advice but it is flawed and fatal nonetheless.

  1. Yes of course, but look at it that way : who goes to survivalists/prpper sites ? Mainly people in search of an answer.

I guess most of your readers and minions are doing the same. they are less of them because in all honesty this time and not speaking about your hairdo, you are an intellectual guy and there are less people ableto follow that.

Besides, you don't advocate badassery nor do you post any pictures. I mean "badassery "in the way normal people figure it, with AR-15 and velcro badass badges and everything.

As for me, the perspective of getting shot at with a .303 cartridge designed to kill a horse or to be killed with a Pig Sticker bayonet is badass enough, thank you very much.

    1. Dammit, I KNEW I needed Velcro bassass badges! Bison wearing a Tommy hat and carrying a SMLE? Or go Soviet style and have crossed wheat bunch and sickle with Enfield?

    2. Perhaps something less expensive, more in tune with your real-life badass frugal skills ?

How about taking a strip of velcro from discarded sandals or something, and on the back of it, we write with a sharpie : BTN

    3. Come on! Nothing's too good for the minions. A brand NEW piece of Velcro with sharpie writing on the back!

  2. "They fail to see anything wrong systematically."
    =================================================

There it is. The fulcrum, the pivot point.
They don't see the bigger picture.
    Know why?
Laziness and and complacency, and life is good to them, now.

But everybody has their snapping point and when that occurs they start to see the real picture that was there all along and they kick theirselves in the ass for not seeing it sooner.

Our son and fambly live in Cape Coral FL and come up here for a week or so at least once a year and my wife and I put the thumbscrews on them to move up here. This year they have been here 3 times so far, once while outrunning Irma, and we hoped that would help them to see the light. It didn't. The first thing these people do when they roll into our house is unleash all their gadgets and every outlet in the house is jammed with chargers and our bandwidth is sucked dry. Then they jump in their $40k ride and hit the stores and food factories in the distant metropolises, then head back here with their bags of goodies and "get connected" in all their 3" screens.

I buy some prep stuff for my son, give him tips, ask his opinions on world and national events, ask about crime in the area where they live, etc., trying to get a mindset growing inside his brain and he's all too amicable but then they go back down there and everything is like it was before.

It's too cold here. It's too far to everything, here. It's scary and dark out in the woods. Your bandwidth sux great blue whale. It's soooo boring here, and, where the hell are all the people? They just don't get it.

But. This is where they run to when disaster strikes.
See? They can see the light, partially. But they prefer the constant convenience of running to the store 5 mins away and the unlimited bandwidth so they can stay connected to their 8 million *friends*.

It's frustrating, and I start to wonder if I'm just wasting my time trying to convert them.

    1. Of COURSE you are wasting your time. Family sucks-all obligation on YOUR part. Stock for them, they won't do it. Wheat gruel only :) My new inherited family is exactly the same, and they are my sole tribe ( friend moved back down south near Vegas ).

    2. Please do a post about having a "tribe"

I'm at the tail end of enjoying weeks of hosting my in-laws (who my family don't like but in-laws get upset at not seeing which of course creates friction... needless friction)

Also I'm loving my preps being mocked (why so much toilet paper?), and the lack of privacy

I *may* write my own thoughts as I am thinking that having a "tribe" isn't discussed in prepper sites enough if at all.

    3. Everyone thinks they will join a group of pro's I guess. But, most likely, your family of miscreants and malcontents will be your tribe. I think I just might give that a go tomorrow. Thanks.

  4. "when you only plan for bad weather, you make bad plans."
Nah, when you only plan for bad weather, you make plans that only work for the first bit of bad weather. They are good plans (possibly) but they are for a sprint when you are (or at least could be) starting a cross country marathon. GO Sprinters! Go! Be the hare in the tortoise and hare race - be blind to the fact the actual finish line isn't the week after the hurricane but the week after dying of (very) old age. If your preps and plans can't see you to well past retirement you haven't prepared enough.

    1. Yes,but it helps to have incremental steps in between. It's not he flimsy tent for fair weather and suddenly we go full storm shelter when it starts to rain.

Or you could live in your strom shelter 24/7, of course, watching "The Bunker" over and over again :)

    2. Don't forget "10 Cloverfield Lane".

    3. Fun fact : in the original script, the outside world was really destroyed, and the survivalist proved to be benevolent.

But JJ Abrams bought the project and would have nothing of this, it had to be a grrl power movie (Girl wins against some space monster) and also somehow mixed with some Cloverfield to market it better.

      Delete
    4. If you watch 10 Cloverfield Lane turn it off about 10 minutes to the end. What was a great movie got turned into absolute drivel.

In the last movie in the Rocky series there was an alternate ending which, had they chose to run with that, it would have ruined the whole movie. The ending they did choose made it the best of the series.

    5. I agree the end was...bizarre. But overall, a damn fine movie. Goodman at about his best as an actor.

    6. Ave, I wonder how that original version would have faired? Sounds better, yes, but at least this way the thing got exposure. I agree with the vomitus girl power BS. Sweet Baby Jesus, it is everywhere. I could watch the new Wonder Women-I have free access to it-but I'm deeply afraid.

    7. It's an interesting problem : is it better to introduce people to survivalism through a movie that depicts it as a lunatic's activity, or rather to make an adult movie like "Take Shelter", of which I made a favorable review on this very blog some years ago ?

From my experience, Extroverts are really hating the bug-in and what it entails. It is quite literally Hell for them.

Now who watches "10 Cloverfield Lane" ? Apart from the occasional survivalist because it's about their hobby, mostly it will be men between 18 and 35 of age, and then with their girlfriend / wife / future ex.

Grrrl Power is a way for the movie industry to get the women to accept seeing sci-fi/ weirdo pictures. And the conclusion is "we won't bury ourselves in, but will fight back !" ("Yay for extraversion !")

I'm pretty certain it's these minds who really snap during a Great Depression, because so many problems are being thrown at them they can't get over them. Oh, they will scheme on a petty level with other locals, it's all a return to village politics, but with people who are not well in their heads.

If I can dare to say, those who look for "fighting back" their problems in the context of survivalism / collapse are like the virgin prom queen who leaves with the bad guy, thinking she is strong, and ends up in a situation with various degrees of unvoluntary sex, down to rape.

  5. Texas will be a tough place to live in if (when?) SHTF. The summer time temperatures alone make everybody a bit edgy right now. Imagine it after the grid goes down and A/C no longer exists.

Racial tensions I think may be a bit overblown. I think income level tensions are as bad or worse. Poor and middle class minorities and whites already get along okay, work together and go to same places. The really poor Mexican colonias, where Mexican people who 'don't have jack shit' live in are pretty bad. They mainly victimize each other though.

That book you mention at top (Rancho Costa Nada) is a GOOD book. I don't know how much is costs now, but instructs and is funny to read as well. The Demented Vet chapters are especially good. RIP Phil Garrington.

    2. I’m the minion that posted that link in the previous thread Jim. I just checked it out, and it appears that the entire book is there (minus a few letters that Phil included from readers at the end). It wasn’t a PDF download though, so if you want to save it, you will have to copy and paste it into a word file. You have to click on the “Rancho Full Monty” link at the top to get it, and it’s all one long page. While there are a few outrageously priced hard copies floating around out there, I’m pretty sure the book itself is out of print, having been one of the later publications from the now defunct Loompanics Publishers. I did purchase a kindle copy for a friend for $5 a few years back. Kindle has given many obscure publications a new lease on life, and for this I am thankful.

RIP Phil Garrington? To my knowledge he’s still with us? Perhaps 5:10 knows something that the rest of us don’t?

Oh, and totally agree with the vomitus girl power BS. There’s no escaping it anymore or anywhere. This morning our local news made it a point to show a local high school, along with the football team. Something stood out as odd to me, as two of the “boys” had long blond hair, and looked rather fruity to me, but of course, they were not boys. Men can’t have anything exclusive anymore, and once females move into an existing male institution they must control all behavior in their presence, and in the end, drive all the men out. Higher education is a prime example of this in action. The Scouts will fall next between the fems and the fairy’s.

    3. Kindle does provide a platform, granted, but I'd say PDF did more than they did. With Kindle, you are lost amongst millions. Without Kindle, you are lost to those you can't reach by some advertising or minion word of mouth. Does one really do more for authors than the other?

  6. I was writing a long reply to your note about wheat prices and then my computer locked up so I guess it wasn't meant to be LOL. So a shorter note;
The world is in a bear market for grains, India, Russia, and China produce more wheat than USA. China alone produces 5 times the US. This is keeping our market low even when the US had a poor harvest. As Lord Bison says BUY, BUY, BUY.
I have lost money and made money on commodities for almost 40 years now, I know we can see $2.00 wheat again. BUT I doubt it. We can see 99 cent gas again but I'm not betting on it. If I had to put $100,000 on a wheat price for 2020, I would go high not low.
With the money you save you can buy a FLIR scope.
Consider you self warned, if you die hungry its your fault, not Lord Bison's.

    1. Thank you. I look at wheat through the lens of the middle east, and the semi-recent droughts and floods. Overpopulation, rolling the dice on that years crop failures. Like rice, too many people can suddenly shoot up demand. The safe money is on rising prices. A $5 plastic tote, in the garage your cat patrols, and $30 of wheat, 150 lbs ( leave in bags ). We are right now at $100 for a years supply of wheat. If you don't buy, I spit on your minions membership card.
