early, disciplined, winning

EARLY, DISCIPLINED, WINNING
I was watching a Viking Preparedness video on Patreon ( because while Pastor Joe doesn't deliver a winner every day, when he nails it he is brilliant-and worth more than a buck a month ) which was titled something like “special forces selection process”, posted the beginning of July. In it he was talking about the mantra they were taught there, of “Don't Be Late, Don't Be Light, Don't Be Last”. He describes how that pertained to the course and how it carries over to life and even prepping. I re-titled it, so use whichever sticks in your head.
*
The “Late” part was pretty simple. Late for formation, you washed out immediately. Only “Early” is On Time. The “Light” part was that you were showing up to formation with the requested amount of ruck weight ( under and you were cheating ). The “Last” part was, you keep showing up last and they dump you. Note that this wasn't even SF School, but just the weeks long process of being picked to go to school. His descriptions were fascinating- a much more involved process than I had imagined ( I guess I thought there was lots of sleepless nights during land nav and jumping from planes, to be picked ).
*
This is easily transferred over to a Well Lived Life. Always early is a great job trait. Never cheating makes and keeps you friends. And striving to not be last in anything opens opportunities and makes good habits. It is also a good guide to prepping for and living after the apocalypse. I'm not sure I'll add anything not already covered in the video, but I was rather enamored with the information, and worse case I'm shilling for a master who deserves your support.
*
Don't be late. Early is mandatory for the apocalypse, I hope we can all agree on that. There is no “on time” as you are either early or too late. As the old global thermonuclear war survivalists said, “better two years too early than two seconds too late”. Once the mushroom clouds were presenting a once in a lifetime photo opportunity, you were already hosed. Once the balloon went up, you only had minutes before detonation. You had to be early, and it wasn't an option. Sure, for dramatic purposes the entertainment vehicles portrayed last minute preps. Not realistic though.
*
Then, once the Soviet Union REALLY screwed over the military industrial complex by having the ill grace to implode and leave us without an enemy ( it was too early to believe Our Benevolent Sino Overlords were yet a military or economic threat, as they never had more nukes than Bare Minimum Defensive ), a new and unimproved lot of “preppers” decided that Slow Survivalism was okay. As in, we have all the time in the world for a thirty year mortgage and incremental preparations. Bosh, I say, and Humbug. Poppycock AND bovine excrement! I won't point fingers, being the cultured gentleman.
*
Worst. Idea. Ever. If you recall even your Hollywood History, neither Rome or the Mayans had to worry about nuclear war. Yet somehow their civilizations collapsed. And I maintain they collapsed rather quickly. In a long slow stairstep collapse, there is time and inclination to document events. Only in a much quicker collapse are no records left. It wasn't over in a millisecond, but it certainly didn't last generations. As an aside, look at how little recorded information our current collapse has generated.
*
There is a lot of dead trees that copy the mainstream “news” organizations views that only peddle fear porn, selling an agenda. How many books representing new desertification yelled from the rooftops that the sky was falling, which never came to pass. Nostradamus, New World Order, the state of Israel fulfilling Biblical prophesy that Armageddon was nigh, an imminent Ice Age, then Gore Warming, now Ice Age again. But how many books have documented actual collapse as it has ALREADY happened? Not as “proof” of all the above scares but just as documentary to date? I'm at a loss to list any. Systemic analysis suffers from Specialist narrow viewed competition.
*
So, why believe that the ancients were any better documenting their collapse? Weren't they just as invested in the status quo, just as blinded by hubris, just as confused by blinders? Could they just have been too busy surviving, as minions have speculated? I know this smacks on my own hubris, but couldn't their documentation have been as fragile as our own? I like to think hobbyists such as myself documented events, but the collapse destroyed all that.
*
Just as the grid going down will destroy my works, so looting and pillaging saw all books used for ass wipe or starting fires. In a stairstep collapse, with each generation living their perceived normalcy, a whole civilization doesn't lose all records. That only happens when they are being utterly destroyed. Something like Rome destroying Carthage isn't civilization collapse, only one side losing a war. Other societies at the time recorded. No one recorded the demise of Rome. Nor did any records survive the following Dark Ages.
*
Anyway, nuclear war might be far down the list of probables right now, and Yellowstone or an asteroid are still lower risks. Cyber-attacks are already reality now, with a few system outages and a LOT of “save your data for a bribe” attacks. So we probably don't even have to worry about an EMP. Whether that is an overnight collapse worry or not is debatable. But you don't prep early for all that, but more so because as soon as you lose your job-a proven daily risk-YOUR ability to prep is the same as an overnight collapse.
*
And assuming you'll stay employed or find other employment is asinine. As far as prepping is concerned, early and done is the only smart strategy. You need to be ready, now, with all future activity a bonus rather than a necessity. Next up, we have Discipline. This is another obvious one. Without discipline you are a worthless Marshmallow Man. You are a fat, wheezing blob of girly-man ( for my very few female readers, I guess that makes you a fickle bitch ). It is another persons job to force discipline on to you so that you develop it yourself, from fear. But you can't wait for the apocalypse for that.
*
That is where those having served in the military have an advantage. Discipline was already forced upon us, and we enjoyed the feeling of not getting screwed when we utilized it ourselves, hence making it a habit. Not to say you need the military for that, just that it got you in the habit early. You already experienced the trauma forcing the practice on you and got the benefits in plenty of time to help you. A messy divorce is a great way to start the discipline habit. Instead of slopping your dingus into any willing partner, you had to learn how to say “No” to the really expensive stuff.
*
Discipline as it pertains to almost anything is easy. If you had to force yourself to do something unpleasant, you're exercising discipline. Are you disciplined as a prepper? No, squeezing out a budget for shopping doesn't REALLY count. Shopping is fun, like you are a girl piling up more shoes. Don't deny it. Every case of ammo staked on top of the pile sends an electric jolt of ecstasy through your nipples down to your sphincter. Hey, no judgment here. I've been known to sport wood after acquisition of another few hundred rounds of 303 British.
*
But shopping is to too much to a degree entertainment or wallowing in decadence. Treating yourself. It was in itself enjoyable. You should be enjoying the overcoming of pain associated with forcing yourself to perform something unpleasant, not the task itself. Most of us only experience a tiny bit of pain changing some of the budget over to preps. Is that REALLY discipline? Running long enough to get a Joggers High is not so much a discipline as it is seeking a drug hit. Running enough for a good cardio workout, but never enough for the chemical high-that is discipline.
*
Okay, enough for one day. We continue tomorrow.

  1. I saw a special on the special forces a while back on the military channel, I believe it was. It mentioned that 80% of the participants would be weeded out by the end. Of course, I do believe that the last I heard, the sjw’s managed to get their filthy paws on this last elite branch of the military, and have lowered the standards so that females could participate. So it’s only a matter of time before the special forces becomes the same as the regular military in any normal country, that is mostly void of leftwing morons. But no worries. I’m sure that the opposition will be quaking in their boots, and scurrying in the opposite direction, at the mere presence of Tommy Turd Burglar, Purple Haired Patty, and Tuna Boat Tammi :D

  2. Been wanting to get a motorcycle forever, minion here Jim. Those things are dangerous AF. I have decided on a safer option (Well, at least I consider it to be). I have a 2 stroke gas engine kit for my bicycle on the way. You will be happy to know that I’m still in line with your bicycle as a primary source of transportation philosophy, since after all, once using the motor is no longer a valid option, I can revert back to the basic bicycle. In the mean time, I will have better range and performance. Yes, I looked into electric. If you have the extra money to spend, it might not be a bad way to go. But it was too expensive for the performance and range that I was looking for.

At some point in the relatively near future, I will upload a guest article detailing my experiences with the motor kit.

    1. I'd agree it is probably safer. I want to go with electric because, one, solar recharging when the gas pumps dry up, and number two the prime benefit of off grid after Fewer People is Peace & Quiet and a gas motor is noisy as crap. I'd use hooked together 12v batts instead of the extra expensive fancy lithium or whatever they are, to keep costs down. Guest articles are of course always appreciated.

    2. Yeah, I hear you on the quiet electric motor Jim. That’s why I was seriously considering it. In my case it would have been way easier to install as well, since I would have went with the replacement front wheel that has the motor built into the hub. But I came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t be able to have the performance and range that I wanted, unless I spent around $500+ dollars (You can buy the 66cc gas engine kit all day long for $100). Now I did see some dude with my same exact bike (genesis onyx 29" bike) and he had both. He had the 2 stroke gas motor mounted on the frame, and an electric wheel hub on the front. But he put over a grand into his (Only to later have it stolen) and that’s way beyond my budget.

If you don’t care about range or performance that much though, you can do it fairly cheaply then. Just bear in mind that many of these hubs are 24, 36, or 48 volts, so you will have to run more than one 12v battery in series to have the required voltage. Also, you would want deep cycle batteries for this application, because discharging regular batteries way down, and recharging them in such a way, will ruin them. That’s why the lithium batteries, as expensive as they may be, are ideally suited.

    3. I didn't realize gas motors were so damn cheap. I was looking at $200 for the front wheel with motor and $200 for a set of three sealed deep cycle batts. I'm not sure what the 36amp batts are good for in mileage-it would probably have to be just up hill assist only. And you should be able to easily store 6 months + gas for yours, so there is a partial fix. I can't say I find any fault with your plan, really.

    4. In Dingoland what you're describing is classed as an unregistered motorcycle.

A word of warning. The brakes on a pushy aren't cut out for stopping a combustion powered bike. You'd need a disc brake

I had a quick look at electric scooters. They're an option

      Delete
    5. What about a single speed coaster brake?

      Delete
    6. 12:18 here. Yes Jim/Dingo, you can in most cases keep the coaster brake, so long as it doesn’t interfere with the rear motor sprocket. I will also add an auxiliary front brake as well. I don’t believe that disc brakes are an option, at least on the rear axle, because it interferes with the motor drive axle.

Also, realistically speaking, we’re not talking about very high speeds, as in around 25 to 30mph max (That’s 40 to 48kph for you Dingo) and I’ll likely be cruising at much lower speeds. I was going to mention this in my future guest article (But I’ll repeat it again at that time) but Dingo is right, in that there are laws classifying these motorized bicycles. Technically, it will be a moped, and it legally cannot exceed 30mph/48kph. But even here in Commiefornia, I’ve found that the laws are fairly reasonable. I do not need insurance, and there’s a one time fee of $21 that I’ll have to pay to receive a permanent moped plate (Mail in form; I don’t even need to go down there). The only drawback is that I do need either an M1 or M2 motorcycle license.

    7. Bicycle engine kit...
These are cheap engines and need all the help they can get. You must get some Militec 1, which is a superior firearm lubricant.

      https://www.amazon.com/Militec-1-9150013783118-16-Oz/dp/B00JAYZDSG/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=militec+1&qid=1562974359&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Reportedly this has been used on cheap generators and other small engines as an internal lubricant and doubled the engine life over engines without it.
      Peace out

    8. The motorcycle license would be a deal killer for me. Not sure how I passed it so easy when 16, but by 21 I couldn't pass even the written.

      Delete
    9. Thanks for the tip 4:50, I made a note of the Militec. Yes, I’m fully aware of the weak point of these cheap Chinese engines, and am aware that in order for them to last, you must break them in properly, cannot ride them hard, and must keep the RPM’s down low. That said, there was one fellow that got 6k miles out of his. If I can get 2k, considering the price, I’ll be quite happy.

@Jim. The motorcycle license is required in Commiefornia, but in many states, you don’t need the insurance or the license.

    10. I have a 2 stroke kit, installing one can be a challenge. They are generic as hell and one size fits none. Be prepared for a lot of tweaking, I still haven't got the chain idler right, and I have lots of mechanical experience

    11. And...a ringing endorsement for electric.

    12. Thanks Wrenchr2. Yes, I know what I’m getting in to. One lady said that her 12 year old grandson managed it, so I should be able to. Though it’s always possible that it was one amazing 12 year old (And no, not Desmond Is Amazing, amazing, but normal amazing :D ). Yes, I’m told that you have to replace the chain idler with a high quality version, such as the one in the link below.

Agree on the electric Jim. If funds were less limited, or my desire for more performance were less, it would probably be the way to go.

    I grew-up on a farm.
My four grandparents lived next door.
Every Saturday was a family re-union.

    Discipline is internal.
Discipline is me earning respect from the people I love.
Discipline is me earning the trust of my dog.
    Discipline is repeatable.
Discipline is my willingness to dissolve an unworkable relationship... especially if the result is an uncomfortable solitude.

  5. Lord Bison, you're throwing unwarranted shade on US Ag...Your post script addendum must be bile overflowing from your assesment of fracking.
    A case of gastric reflux?

To wit, "note: the US grows a total of 47 million metric tons of wheat a year...Breadbasket of the world my ass."

If I may, a better analysis is that US is THE hinge world wheat producer (The US is ranked first in crop export volume; almost 50% of its total wheat production is exported).

We are the 2nd or 3rd largest EXPORTER. We have surpluses that keeps places like Egypt, Pakistan etc from exploding into civil war from famine. Guarantee that massive food riots erupt in those 2 (& a score of others) if the DAILY freighters dont unload wheat. What do you think all that US gov't money going to them is for?....food and unneeded weapons for peacock strutting .mil in those nations.
US tax money given to Egypt to buy US wheat..$1 billion(?). Get the picture? Don't want 90+ million Egyptians going off the reservation. Scares the "special" neighbor.

Per Chicago Merc (CME):"The US is ranked third in production volume of wheat, with almost 58 million tons produced in the 2012–2013 growing season, behind only China and India".
Want to guess how much China/India exported in 2013? Hmmm...probably close to...zero? Many stomachs at home to fill. So, whose production counts in preventing famine?

In fact, since 2013 US wheat production has EXCEEDED all domestic usage. The surpluses sat in elevators as collateral against gov't provided loans and insurance premiums. In fact, same surplus story EVERY DAMN YEAR going back to 2007 (2012 excepted..South Plains drought, remember?...I do).

    https://www.cmegroup.com/trading/agricultural/wheat-reports.html

Here's a snippet I copied for data up to 2001.
"The acreage has gone down by nearly 30% (to 48,653,000 acres in 2001, as against 60-63 million acres harvested annually in the previous years; 30 of this area is in Texas.[15]) The amount exported has also declined.[13] The acreage reduction was dictated by the Acreage Reduction Program (ARP), which was introduced for wheat, feed grains, and cotton; and production faces pressures from multiple factors.[23][24].

What that paragraph is referring to is the end of the infamous direct cash payment "crop subsidy" program in the 5 year Congressional Ag Bills. The subsidies became too embarrasing to Congress.
Dont worry...govt subsidized "crop insurance" is the new street corner "shell and marble" trick. Big Ag gets slopped at the trough.

Also, world markets changed, other nations altered their AG export mix. Argentina, formerly #1 beef exporter, started to plow up rangeland to grow China bound soy...wheat made an excellent complement to soy in rotation. Thus, more Argentine wheat.

So given that acreage production is reduced since 2001, just imagine if even a fraction of ethanol production is trimmed back? That former "ethanol" ground will be put to small grains like wheat.

Sorry Boss (or is it Bos?), US has plenty of wheat and has MILLIONS of acres still available for more production.

But, keep stocking up....I'm expecting horrific crop blight/disease of some kind in many places resulting in famine.
My personal doomster scenario dontcha you know?

Ride on Black Horseman (Rev 6:5-6).

    1. Okay, good points and I'd agree with you on "hinge producer". Loved the Special Neighbor" snark! :0 Now, in my defense, my point was to try to shake the myth of the US being so vital to food production that everyone else kisses our ass or doesn't soft attack us ( economically, cyberwar, etc ). As always, besides our disagreement over Peak Oil and Fracking :), much to learn from you and it is appreciated.

The new class of missiles are thought to be able to be launched from Bermuda and hit the Pentagon in 7 minutes. Does that missile have a nuke warhead? Those tasked with the response have minutes to decide whether or not to retaliate with the MAD doctrine.

Fear mongering about the recent Russian sub accident questions if it was placing a cobalt nuke.

  7. Nice post. We do have fairly decent documentation on the fall of Rome, at least. It was slow, and then all at once. What we're missing is the aftermath.

We don't have much on the Mayans because they used those old floppy disks and lost their lease to the warehouse where they were housed, and so they were sent to recycling, where they were turned into sombreros.

Or maybe the Spanish burned them?
