a FLIR scope away 2 of 3 ( article 1 of 2 today )

A FLIR SCOPE AWAY 2 ( article 1 of 2 today )
I know one of the first things I’m going to hear from most of you.  All your advice is for single people.  Well, all my prepping was done while married. My advice is merely my experience.  What I couldn’t do was prep while married to the Baby Mamma living a middle class existence.  What I brung into the relationship was what was stockpiled for lo those many years under “her” roof.  No matter how rough it became financially after that, I was always prepping to some degree or another.  It is certainly NOT about finances.  It was about Bitch Control.
*
And, yes, for my two or three female minions, bless you every one because no one really likes to attend a sausage party, I understand everyone today, both genders, are financially irresponsible and you had it just as bad dealing with HIS attempt to control the money and his pissing it away on beer and motorbikes.  So you all understand, your prepping has no restraints placed on it by the number of folks in the household.  Just by the attitudes of its participants.  You live as poor as you need to so as to afford prepping.
*
Or not.  I’ve prepped when 75% of my gross income went to the ex-wife.  I’ve prepped when I had 75% of my gross income free from bills.  It is all about prioritizing, not about income.  I’m still prepping as I make $4k a year.  If you cannot control your woman to reign in luxury spending and divert a small portion for a short period, you will not make it through the collapse.  Not from lack of supplies, from lack of controlling your destiny.  I report the news, I don’t make the rules.  Your choice and choose wisely.
*
We are talking between three and five thousand dollars here.  Less than the cost of my land ( I overspent on the land to minimize commuting cost, but also because it placed me so close to the river.  You pay dearly for water here in the west ).  Anyone can do this.  And this isn’t even the cheapest version.  You should be about to get a lot of land for $1,000.  There are $500 lots out there.  Heck, you could get an eighth of an acre in Arkansas ( closer to where most of you live than here in the high desert ) for $500.
*
That has no HOA’s and allows RV’s.  That is predominately White in population, with low density.  And only about fifteen miles from shopping.  That is out of the Mississippi flood plain.  In the Ozarks.  Why didn’t I move there when I owned land in the region?  I was still paying child support and there were zero jobs there.  It was also a dry county and surrounded by more of them, and wife #4 ( now an ex ) was a boozer who wanted beer.  Homemade wine wouldn’t do for her majesty.
*
I’m not sure I’d even want to live in Arkansas. Kurt Saxon lived there ten or twenty years and the Good Old Boy network screwed him pretty good.  It is one of those places you have to be born in to be accepted. And it has to be THAT county, not the one next door.  But the point is, there is junk land out there for you, in a climate you can accept.  In a region you can live with ( east Texas is another cheap area, but with a crap ton of its own issues, from angry negroes to fracking pollution plus more ).
*
I don’t even really look at junk land costs as “maximum X amount” other than what my budget is.  I didn’t really overpay for my land, even though I REALLY did, because it was not a cost.  It was a minimum payment to never have to pay rent to the bankers again ( you will always pay rent to the county/state, forever.  I minimized mine by keeping it legally raw land rather than developed ).  It was an investment.  It was security.  Even the crappiest land is still yours once paid for, and that is Prep #1.
*
Sure, food and guns come first.  Land without either is worthless.  But anyone can go to the grocery store and spend $42 and have six months of calories in flour.  And anybody with a YouTube video and about $25 can buy some PVC pipe and some arrows ( or some iron pipe and shotgun shells ).  Food and weapons are like clothing.  They are cheap and easy to get and disposable as your circumstances change.  Land, though, is one of those decisions and investments that will alter your life like no other.  Especially now as we economically implode.
*

My criteria for land had more to do with nearby jobs than its initial cost.  If you don’t need a regular job, if a much smaller income is possible to live on, such as a micro business income or retirement, you can pick to live wherever you want and not have to be so picky about where you must live ( for that job ).  I got lucky and had a job I could work like a mule for half price so that no one else wanted my job, a slap to the face sort of job security.
*
If I didn’t have to work to pay the ex to stay out of jail, I could have moved anywhere and picked land in the hundreds rather than the single digit thousands.  But I also just dodged the bullet.  I was born at the right time.  Since I always had job security in retail management, I had a slight advantage in all my preps.  Now?  Retail is dying, and it is not coming back.  Not because of Amazon, but because of those dingus sucking whores that sold us out to globalism.  Sure, we embraced Wal-Mart.  Sue us.  We were already almost three decades into Real Wage Decline.
*
Now it is more important than ever to minimize your need for income, as the jobs disappear.  The best way to do this is to have that paid for lot of land.  If the average person spends 50% + of his take home pay on rent, by not having rent you can go from forty hours a week to twenty, and not suffer one bit.  What? You’ve never walked into work one day and hours were suddenly cut, without warning?  Owning land ( with low property taxes ) is a lifetime liberation. It transcends a problem at one job, or one relationship.
*
Just act promptly.  Cheap rimfire, cheap AR’s, cheap food and cheap land can disappear overnight.  I’d rather have crappy $500 land already secured than subject to hyperinflation money I’m using to save up for theoretical land.  A legal squat is better than fearing the cops placing you in jail from trespassing, or from running out of gasoline or insurance money as you live out of your car.  Continued tomorrow.

  1. You have it right about the price of 22LR.

5000 Round Case - 22 LR 36 Grain Lead Hollow Point Winchester Xpert High Velocity Ammo - XPERT22 This is from SG Ammo $169.50.

I suppose there will be a $15 shipping charge but what a deal!

    1. Holy Crap Snack, Batman! I REALLY want to get in on that action. Do I NEED another 5k rounds? I'm almost at 15k as it is. Dammit, now you got me wound up!

    3. Exchange rate would be about A$277. You are effectively paying twice the rate as we are. I imagine from far less competition and quantity. But you guys have most of the venomous snakes, so you got that going for you :)

  2. I am currently mulling over a piece of land I found for sale and trying to decide if it is the way to go. It has a very small "hunting cabin" on it and not very appealing to the opposite sex. Some changes would be mandatory. It also has a pond, so there's that.

We would also have to dig a debt hole until the current place sells. I'm not happy about that part but since we're not wealthy some concessions must be made. Hopefully the current place would sell quick and the loan would be satisfied in less than 6 months.

The land is 20 acres in the forest, about 1000' x 1000', a perfect square. The only 2 neighbors are more than 1/2 mile away. With a 500' radius of owned property asshole neighbors in the future could be kept at arms length.

A new crib would be built and the old one would be repurposed some how.

Having been 100% debt free for more than 10 years now I am absolutely terrified about going back into it. The idea of being committed to monthly payments is more than I can bear.

Oh, the cost of this property is about $90k. But if I decide to move forward with it they will have to come down. Maybe to $70k. Still. $70k is a lot of coin for this po' white sharecroppers chow to risk.

    1. +1 for not going into debt when it's not necessary. Hell, even when it IS necessary it's not cool

  3. Minions, say nope to that debt dope. The times for the game of financing is long over. A short (few months) credit card purchase for a food or ammo buy is tactically sound. Anything more than that is dice shooting in an alley with unsavory characters. I have all things paid for, even though in a city with those issues, it is far better base of operations and a better financial security option. Look at all those vacant or foreclosed properties listed in yuppie prepper hinterlands because the folks couldn't make a go of it and bailed out from grand dreams unfulfilled. Stick with what you know, or stay within your caste position.

    3. Being lucky and marrying up, and getting plum job through inlaws is rare as hen's teeth. Hitting lottery also won't happen. Settle into some level of physical comfort at your station in life, and make do with it. It actually has a sense of peace to it.

  4. My carry gun is usually full size auto pistol. Usually a Glock 20 10mm.
The other day, got home from work and had my carry pistol in waistband. When playing around with the kids the mag came out. (I don't carry a round in the chamber. I did for 20 years but have changed my procedure)
The mag loss got me thinking that having a spare mag at all times may save your bacon after a similar mag loss during an unexpected scuffle, fender bender, run through woods, whatever.
I mainly considered the spare mag as more rounds in a really wacked situation. But primary mag loss due to misadventure may be a more likely reason for needing a spare mag than running out of rounds in a shoot out.
I also started carrying a revolver (44 Ruger Redhawk) more on non work days. Revolvers are immune from lost mags although maybe someone somewhere has had a cylinder release get bumped the right way and lost rounds? The lack of a mag to lose is not my reason for carrying the revolver. Just throwing out a few off topic thoughts.
GS, hard to say whether the more remote land is worth the temporary debt gamble. If home sales slow as rates climb it would suck to be stuck with an unsold house for longer than you expect. But from what I can glean from your situation, you guys could probably make it work and come out unscathed.

    1. I hadn't thought of that situation, the lost mag in a scuffle. Very good food for thought. If you care for Yankee Marshal on YouTube, he has a video on why revolver carry is a young mans game. Not sure how applicable it is, but:

    2. I don't carry often and when I due it is usually my small Beretta in my right front pocket. If I go to the BIG city then the full size Beretta is onboard and an extra 18 rd mag is in my rear left pocket next to my spare wallet.

You should analyze how exactly that mag release happened and perhaps a behavior change is in order. I just gor my big Beretta out and the way it is configured in the holster the mag release button is down sort of in a recessed area. The button can be released that way, but it takes a lot of effort. Knowing what I know about this world, if I need to carry a full size gun then a revolver just won't due. My Beretta is double action and I never carry a round in the breach. I know, I know, my glock carrying friend rubs my nose in it all the time but at this point in time I see no need to change. I err to caution. Besides, I exercise the Remus rule most of the time: "Avoid crowds".

    3. Regarding the transfer of property I'm considering, there is the possibility of getting a rental house for a year or less, sell the old place, use the proceeds to purchase the new land outright with cash left over to build the new house. Talking the ol lady into it is the hard part. The new crib will be small, around 1000 sf and nothing fancy. I tend to think about stuff for a long time before I act. By then someone else moves on the deal and I'm right back where I was. The influx of communists around here is bothersome. The change since we moved here 13 years ago has been dramatic. I can feel the noose tightening.

  5. Depending upon your "perceived" or anticipated threat levels a form of reload should be part of your attire ensemble. Good sharp folder knife, keys, wallet with ample as possible cash and plastic, stupid phone device, small flashlight, firestarter, etc. Multipocket utility "operator" type of trousers work well as a wagon for your man kit, instead of carrying a murse (man purse). One mag or revolver speedloader of ammo in pocket or waist type pouch will do wonders in a pickle situation. Minions should be in condition yellow or defcon 3 at all times anyway.
