popular prepping 2

POPULAR PREPPING 2
*
note: if you have Netflix I would highly recommend the movie "Here Alone".  It is billed as zombie horror, but my take was more along the lines of a drama, with just a smidge of zombies thrown in.  Very well done, very good story.  It is slow, not action packed.  Stick around for it, I think you'll like where it goes.
*
Yesterday we covered tribal formations and customs and pointed out that the same words don’t mean the same language is being spoken ( because the tribal customs are different ).  A rich guy hoarding gold is not a prepper, he is just a rich guy trying to stay rich and preferably get even richer.  Owning a gun does not make you a prepper, it makes you a normal human being who looks around him and senses danger and the need to protect against that.  Having more than a weeks supply of food does not make you a prepper, it makes you observant and practical.  When the Bible spoke of seven leans of surplus and the stockpile to protect against the seven years of famine, does that make Christians all preppers?  Of course not.  Mormons with a years supply of food aren’t necessarily preppers, they are following a dictate which props up the continuity of power for the church ( as it should be, as the church is the social organizer and protector ).

*

What is going on here is that preppers are desperately trying to include non-members into their tribe.  Whatever that motivation may be, either profit seeking from a subscriber base or from a patron business, or just to seek validation ( I ARE important, see how many others think just like me? ), or even as innocent as looking through their tribal custom prism, their exists little more than a fantasy of popularity.  Now, I’m not trying to be elitist or exclusive or pompous.  In our little Shoshone band of brothers here, there are many different families all having different views with the only unifier being a more pessimistic view of the future than mere imperial wage slaves lost in their bread and circuses.  But we are not a tribal organization to any effective degree.  More like families that band together occasionally.  “Tribal” is more shorthand than adequate label.  Not that it matters, other than for this particular thought exercise ( well, it also matters when you are being mislabeled and prejudged, but that is another tale for another time ).

*

I maintain that you can’t pretend that prepping is popular if most members aren’t even prepping in a true sense but undertaking other exercises.  Mormons aren’t prepping, they are being good Mormons ( yes, I understand they are LDS’ers, not Mormons, just as Eskimos should be called Inuit’s.   I mean no disrespect in using the popular labels ).  The year supply of food is incidental to belonging to and participating in their organization of choice.  Looking at their rabid Yuppieness, they can’t possibly believe in a world without money.  AR Militia Porn Ninja tribal members don’t care that they might need to kill looters, hell, they just want to kill anything.  Government jack booted thugs, Blue Helmet occupation troops, invading Chinese.  They don’t care if they kill zombies or ghetto invaders, they just want to sling lead, take names and be paramilitary.  Heck, I’m jealous!  Viking warriors, when they mean it and aren’t just posers.  But they don’t believe in the end of the world as in systematic collapse.  Where would the ammo resupply come from?

*

I understand we are involving a lot of semantics here.  Splitting hairs.  But really all I’m doing is placing tribal identifiers.  I’m not taking a view of superiority per se, even if elitist pretensions might be implied many times.  I THINK I’m better because I don’t pretend or extend, or at least I hope I don’t, but every tribe thinks they are better than any others.  I’m pointing out that your tribe isn’t as big as you think it is, because you are including anyone who uses the same words ( but who is in fact not speaking the same language ).  At this point, there isn’t even any clear tribal markers anyway, not really.  You can call yourself a prepper, or a survivalist, but you’ll still be encroaching on other tribes markers.  I don’t consider myself a prepper.  I use that in my blog title because it was so close to “Press”.  Bison Press, Bison Prepper.  “Press was one of my earlier labels.  See?  I’d call myself a survivalist, but then some old crotchety bastard might mention Christian Fundamentalism or The Shield, Cross And Sword ( I think I got that one right ),  old White Supremacists who thought they were stockpiling for the race wars which would usher in the collapse of civilization.  So I go with Malthusian Survivalist, which frankly I don’t know if I just made up or I picked up somewhere along the way, or Doomer which isn’t exactly right but closer than the others.

*

Because in a tribe, semantics are rather important.  Going back to my old Indian culture examples, in Baja California and extreme south California, there were tribes that differentiated between themselves for breeding purposes by using two different animals.  Two of the same animal groups couldn’t marry, but one from each could.  Call it, I don’t know as I’m going by memory here, Badgers and Wolfs.  That isn’t close and I’m not sure what mammals lived there, but we are going for illustrative here.  Two Wolfs, even if not blood related, couldn’t join.  Once the White Genocide killed almost all of them off, and there wasn’t enough Wolfs and Badges left, they came up with a new designator, Badger I’m Not Related To, or similar.  Words do matter.  If a prepper is an idiot that is all guns and no food, he sure as heck isn’t a survivalist in my book.  Survivalists know that civilization is getting flushed, not just this weeks grocery shipment.

*

Do you see the need to differentiate?  If that tribe doesn’t believe in the same gods ( I believe in capitalism industrial society, you believe in a non-monetary equalitarian tribal unit-how is any cooperation possible? ), you can’t peacefully coexist.  Look, if you are a prepper and have six months of food and a semi-automatic arsenal, and I’m a survivalist with six years of wheat and a bolt action rifle for conserving ammo, how could those two form a group?  One idiot is going out blasting everything he sees with a wall of lead, then going home and slurping down thousands of calories of hydrogenated oil and GMO grain fed antibiotic ridden factory farm flesh, wasting resources because soon a central organization will reemerge and get the fracking fields pumping again, while the other poor bastard is having a heart attack from the inability of the other one to conserve and husband resources, because no cavalry is coming and no more carbon fuels will ever be pumped again.  That is why tribal markers are important.  Different cultures using different resource bases, or at least perceived ones.  In our case currently, using the wrong tribes culture as a training point is dangerous.  There is a method to the hair splitting madness.

*

So, hopefully you are understanding my classification system here.  I said Mormons aren’t preppers.  But then, preppers aren’t survivalists.   You could claim that prepping is now popular because more folks are doing it, if you technically lumped all families into the same genus.  I’m suggesting that this is a mistake since few are actually culturally compatible.  It is like thinking a lizard and a bird could hump since they descended from a common ancestor.  The original question-thank you Idaho Homesteader-was “Is prepping going mainstream because of an increased awareness for the need for preparedness, or is there just a false sense of security from commercialized products”.  This is course unanswerable without serious research, but here at the Bison headquarters our research budget in pretty miniscule.  So you get extrapolation on the better days and wild assed guessing the rest of the time.  But in broad terms, the answer to the question is, “neither”.  Prepping is not mainstream or popular because of an increased awareness of its necessity.  It is just a profit seeking venture by the mainstream media.  You know, the same idiots that would have you believe that every daycare in the country was run by a Satan worshipping pedophile back in the ‘80‘s.  Hollywood doesn’t reflect popular culture out of design but by accident.  They WANT to be popular but they don’t actually know the product to offer.  They produce a lot of crap and one thing becomes popular by accident, then everyone dog piles on that.  And it isn’t even popular because of its subject but because of its presentation, even though its emulators merely copy the subject.  No one cared that The Godfather was about the mob, just that it was a damn fine movie.  Nobody cares that “The Walking Dead” is about zombies, but because the character development is so well done ( I can’t even re-watch the old seasons.  I’ve tried several times.  They are just like a soap opera, only good as a continuing saga.  Perhaps because the development takes so long to unroll, but that is a subject for another time as I haven’t given it sufficient thought ).

*

“Doomsday Preppers” is so far from reality, even so removed from feasibility, that it only makes sense as a continuation of the reality show.  Cheap production being the goal.   Preppers and gun nuts and doomers and survivalists might watch it as a curiosity, but they use it to their own ends ( such as war gamming ).  The show doesn’t mean there are more preppers out there, just that enough people watch it to pay the bills and return a profit.  They don’t have to be preppers.  They just might be voyeurs.  As for a false sense of security being delivered by commercialized products, again, that isn’t a prepper thing.  That is just a commercialized consumer society where everything is sold to deliver a false sense of security.  Hell, what do you think marriages are, any more?  Females sell a false sense of entitlement, belonging and security and then cash out and move on ( for the most part, generally speaking ).  Cell phones were initially sold from fear-in a dangerous situation or accident, you needed to be in touch!  Now, I’m not sure what it is.  Fear of not being connected?  Cars are sold from fear.  Fear of not getting a good job if you can’t commute, fear of not being cocooned against criminals and Darkies.  Fear of not having “freedom of movement”.  Fear of not having a marker sufficient to attract the opposite sex.  Fast food, atrociously hideous retched slop, is sold on the fear of not loving every bite, or having to accept blandness inherent in healthy consumables.  A “healthy” alternative at McDonald’s, a salad or a yogurt, contains more sugar than their Sundae.

*

No wonder some might be lured into a false sense of security by accepting more dependency.  The whole game is geared to sell a lack of fear.  If the solution can hide another fear, profit has been achieved!  Semi-auto’s are the solution to Black Fear ( as I must keep repeating so as to halt irritable comments, skin color is a tribal marker here in this country, but racism is not intended.  A Black from Jamaica or other islands, or from Brazil, not sharing in the hostile attitude from the American ghetto, is not marked out as an enemy according to his skin color, except by the very ignorant ), but despite the claims of cross marketers are not conducive to survivalism.  I’m afraid of semi’s because of their logistics dependency.  Others embrace them for their race war survival aspect ( would you call them survivalists or even preppers?  I’d call them dumb asses for staying near the ghetto ).  Both of us are motivated by fear, sold products for our fear.  But once a fear is realized, no amount of commercial products can alleviate the fear.   Such is the beauty of consuming fear.  It doesn’t stop, just like cocaine use ( sold to users who fear not staying happy ).

*

More products don’t mean more preppers.  It means merely that a niche market is maturing and expanding.  It is the Hollywood subject dog piling.  That is all.  And the demise of prepper companies is not only an indicator of a failing economy, it is also a sign of a mature industry overbuilt.  Companies thought more preppers were out there, probably by looking at the popularity of the zombies and TV preppers.  That is basically just business as usual.  Dog piling as a business strategy is retarded.  More product after the same customer, without the superior product.  Fear sells ( for prepper companies, the fear of not having enough customers, so they “buy“ into investing to sell to preppers, willingly suspending belief in a limited market ), and no product stops the fear past a temporary sense, but purveyors of fear are both poor businessmen ( copy cat-ers and dog pilers, not inventors or innovators or trend spotters ) and rely on cultural observers that mistake a view through a prism as one through a microscope.  Some blogger thinks preppers are popular and expanding because there are Mormons and white separatists and gold bugs and zombie fans, all speaking the same words, and the business tries to sell to them all, but each fears different things and each views through a different prism.  You can’t market the same fears to different groups.

*

I think that is enough on that.  As a personal life lesson, don’t do business with different tribes, and don’t try to join together with different cultured tribes.

  1. Many years ago back when I was still a Christian, I belonged to the LDS church. Funny thing is that I can’t recall any of the members actually having a 1 year food store, though I’m sure some did, and maybe never mentioned it. The church actually has its own farms for this very purpose. They were a decent organization that took care of their own, and even outsiders to a point. But even back then, some 25 odd years ago, I noticed the PC agenda slowly creeping in. Those early Mormon dudes were some bad asses though, at one point keeping the U.S. federal troops that tried entering the Salt Lake Valley at bay. The modern versions, not as much.

I’m real skeptical about group situations. The one exception might be if they’re really small, and you’ve known, and spent much time with the people in that group, and know that you’re fully compatible. But generally I don’t think that they work out well in the long run. Back in the 60’s, a lot hippies formed communes, and my understanding was that seldom did any of them last beyond 6 months to a year. And that’s with a lot of pot consumption that helps to aid in mellowing the group out. I think a better solution is to cache lots of supplies, and play the part of the poor hermit living in a shack. Something like that pile of crap that the Rancho Costa Nada dude lived in.

I’m of the opinion that if you need lots of ammo to survive the collapse, then you’re probably not going to survive the collapse. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t store lots of ammo, because you should. But to me, the main reason is to have enough to get one or more generations of your family members through the hardest part of the collapse.

    1. Don't worry, soon most of us won't need to "play the part" of living poor.

    2. So play the part NOW so you can keep playing the part of living poor later (while actually being more comfortable than most would expect because you have spent the difference on preps).

  2. "As a personal life lesson, don’t do business with different tribes, and don’t try to join together with different cultured tribes." IN other words do what the browns and the blacks do and stick with your own kind! Absolutely right WHITE MAN! Liberals who listen to rap music and try and act gangster need their little limp wristed asses kicked!. Racial diversity is another term for the eradication of the white race! Deny it all you want. Look around. If wanting to see the white race continue to thrive is racist I am as racist as you can get!

    1. To be fair of course, Whites started out a very small minority. Would it kill us if our numbers tumbled once again?

    2. Actually it would kill a lot of us.

    3. All the races started out small in numbers. Granted whites don't breed like cock roaches the way some races do. Quality not quantity perhaps. But we have as much right to exist and live and thrive as anyone else. We seem to have decided on racial suicide to make up for the sins of the past. It is liberal insanity. Maybe you have been away from Mexifornia to long and have forgotten how it is in "civilization",

    4. Whites *are* a minority world wide. It only seems like there's more whites / Europeans because as a group we / they have punched above their weight. Another trick is counting non-whites as whites. Think of Zimmerman. He was a Mexican but for the narrative he was a white man. There's a lot of "whites" with Mexican sounding names on the FBI's wanted list.

Some of the early British Expiditions to the dark continent were wholesale slaughters. What with 10's of 1'000's of warriors with hide shields and spears V Machine guns.

We are in for rough times ahead. It doesn't matter if you care about race or not one whit for it. What matters is that others do.

One last point. Tipping point for things isn't 50.1%. It's said that only 3% of the US population faught the British during the war of independence. The percentage of Germans that were Nazi party members was around 7 - 10%, the percentage supporting the Nazi's was around 33%. Hardly a majority but enough to tip the scales.

Yep, you'd better be taking this prepping seriously

MR: racial suicide is retarded as we go about it. You almost have to wonder if there is a conspiracy behind it. The elite push for race wars and we kill ourselves off nicely.
228: race war is already baked into the cake. Thanks Obammy. So don't JUST take prepping seriously, but the right KINDS of prepping. Like getting the hell away from the ghettos.

  4. Grandad sure had his opinions about Mormons and Mexicans. Then his daughter up a married a Mexican. One of his son's married a Mormon. What truly broke his heart was his oldest son. Uped and married a Democrat. Love is blind. I'm taking care of my own and color has nothing to do with it.

    1. At one time, pre-PC, it made sense for the poor to be Democrat. What Republicans miss is that you are supporting policies for the rich rather than the poor. Course, there is that gun control thing, so I suppose you have little choice. Better to avoid voting. Realistically, both parties support policies that enrich the elite, at the end of the day. I think soft on gun control forces most folks to vote to screw themselves on one hand, voting for benefits screws you on the other. No bait and switch, but bait and hump you.

      +1k, Upvote, Thumbs Up, etc.
Skin color is only part of the totality of tribal markers. I guarantee you, come the collapse of law and order (local or globally), the dark skinned Crips and Bloods will STILL be shooting at each other in spite of shared skin color. Same for the Mexican Cartels, and all sorts of other factions.
And I will be treating as a threat the dark or light skinned persons crossing my land or AOO if their other tribal markers indicate they are a threat (hats on sideways, gold chains / teeth, and tattoos on their faces, briefcases and italian shoes, etc.)
IMHO skin is a very minimal tribal marker anymore. It still counts, but thanks to interbreeding and global travel and imperially forced 'tolerance' it is less important than clothes and behavior. There are green eyed Crips, and hook nosed 'Aryan brothers' - they just make certain to display the other tribal markers much more thoroughly.

    4. The only reason skin matters is because the darker hued ones are trying to force it down our throats, but your point taken.

  5. I consider the prepping/survivalist movement to consist of the following sub types. (description included)

Prepper ( These are the people who can handle a hurricane, or similar natural disaster, without having to suffer too much due to it. They are seldom willing to kill, and unable to handle more than a few disasters without some return to 'normal')

Survivalist ( These are the people who harken back to the Cold War concepts, willing to kill at need, and with some concept that multiple issues could come along together, but they still expect some sort of return to 'Normal' or even 'Better' once the disruptions are done)

Malthusian Survivalist (these people realize that population overshoot for existing resource base has always been baked into the cake, and that, lacking breakthrough on new resources like cheap fusion power, our species is going to go through a massive population die off and most existing complexity and infrastructure will be cannibalized on the way down. If they actually prepare for this occurrence they have figured out multiple ways of handling the fact there will not be a return to normal and that a new normal will be filled with threats and disruption of any sort of new normal as our global population bumps its way down. BUT there is a chance -of variable probability- that there will come a level of stasis or even population recovery once the population falls far enough below carrying capacity in a multi generational perspective; likely only leading to another upswing and population overshoot of the reduced resource base generations later.)

Doomer (near Nihilist in outlook usually, but still willing to try to prepare at least to be able to enjoy life and/or help others during the downward population trend they are expecting, this willingness to prepare and fight to improve the situation makes them superior to the Nihilists below.)

Nihilist (these people assume there is no point in preparing beyond a single bullet in their fancy gold plated gun for themselves human extinction and likely all life on earth is coming probably next week, for whatever reason. They might be right, but expecting to die and not working to try to pull through sort of guarantees that one WILL die, so hump them.)

    1. Not sure I see much difference between Malthusian and Doomer.

      Delete
    2. Malthusian sees the coming collapse as just part of a cycle that will likely keep occurring.
Doomers cant see past the coming collapse, and assume it will be the last of the cycles.
Practically there is little difference, just a matter of how long they may consider preparing for and what they think may happen afterward.

I must moderate-trust me. You don't want to see what happens otherwise. Sometimes it takes awhile to respond as I only check two or three times a day. No N-Bombs, nothing to get me libeled. Otherwise, have at it. If you criticize me, make sure to praise my hair first.
