CONSUMING TO INVEST 31
Hemp
If you are interested in the industrial uses of hemp, and you should be as this is one of the wonder plants for after the Apocalypse ( rope, cooking oil, and etc. with the plants, very importantly, NOT using feed crop soil but able to thrive on marginal soil as the weed it is ), you really should read the book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes". Part expose on the abuses of power as the DuPont’s of the world legislating the end of competition to their monopolies, part call for legalization and part how-to-run-a-civilization-on-the-best-renewable-possible, the book is indispensable. Remember, hemp is a useful plant. Marijuana is the artificial enhancement of hemps female plant for recreational use. Just because you have a hemp plant doesn’t mean you can smoke it to get high. But our super wonderful Federal Gooberment had a vested interest in increasing its power ( drug enforcement taking the place of alcohol enforcement ) and revenue and subsidizing giant corporations needed in the war effort for imperial growth, and so hemp was demonized for no other reason than its own advancement. Back eighty years ago, so don’t blame it all on Nancy Reagan. It isn’t stoner-heads having delusions for a return to legal trips that should be the reason to re-legalize hemp, but as an answer to our energy and food problems ( the book is something like twenty-five years old, which just goes to prove the best solution to any problem isn’t a issue of intelligence but of entrenched powers suppressing any solutions ).

Herbal Remedies
One issue with ANY advocated natural remedy is that its cheerleaders inevitable make so many fanciful claims to its proprieties ( ALL cure cancer, acne, irritable bowel syndrome and even ugliness ) that you come away a newly hatched cynic with a jaundiced eye towards any further claims. The main thing herbal remedies have going for them is not because they perform so wonderfully but because they are local and don’t require barter or a continental infrastructure or oil based imperial wealth/energy. They probably under perform all the practitioners claims, but they are renewable and local and most importantly, available. So, for instance, dried huckleberry might only slightly be antibacterial ( I just pulled a name out of my butt, here-don’t bother telling me huckleberry is useless, or used for something else ), but it is most assuredly better than nothing and can be used long after BigPharm medication which works much better is a distant memory after the oil runs out. Search your fav book seller under "herbal remedies" for a book or three, and you could be the future pharmacist in your community ( start now for practice and seed stockpiling ). Herbs are great for being small scale, needing less compost and greenhouse space, and while you can’t safeguard the knowledge, most likely no one else will have thought of this for future planning and you should keep your monopoly.

accuracy or reliability
ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY
When choosing a military long gun you are able to choose one of two desired qualities, accuracy or reliability ( the HK-91 system, German, the original Spanish-sometimes- or now American, combines both but is the higher priced arm. For Po’ Folk, they can be a hard sell for the budget ). Both in my discussions on the old World War Two Enfields verses the Mauser and the just posted AR verses the AK, I’ve stated that my personal preference is to choose reliability over accuracy. Yet most of the rest of the time, I’m screaming like a little girl about how you are limited to the rounds of ammunition on hand after the Apocalypse and you need to coddle and squeeze and perform unnatural acts of love on each and every round and not waste them ( for our purposes here, I’m NOT reversing my position that semi-auto’s are evil and will waste ammo for all but an extremely small portion of survivalists who will be able to actually manage fire discipline under a flood of adverse brain chemicals beyond anyone’s control. I’m assuming you choose to buy semi’s for their ruggedness and design functionality-not for speed of firing but for their higher standard of engineering- but will deactivate the bolt cycling mechanism ). So which is it? Am I telling you to waste shots in an inaccurate weapon or am I telling you to make every shot count? You can’t have it both ways, right?
*
Okay, here is my thinking on the subject. The mid-size caliber rifles/carbines are based on the finding that the average range in a combat encounter is around thirty yards or so. For these weapons, three hundred yards is at the far range and the average shooter is relying on luck more than skill getting a hit. At the six hundred yard range of the thirty caliber rifles, well, those are sniper ranges. So, thirty cal is over kill for your average infantryman. Survivalists like the thing for its stopping power ( stories of "skinnies" taking three shots of 223 to go down, etc. ) but they do tend to give themselves too much credit for imagined skill at long ranges ( yes, I loved "Unintended Consequences" all to pieces myself. But he was a life long trained sniper-you certainly are NOT ). If you scale your rifle shots down to realistic ranges, one hundred to one hundred and fifty yards, not only can you actually see your target without glass, you can also actually hit it. Even if your gun is not a fabled "one inch group". You might have been operating under a set of misconceptions about your military weapon. As in, it is actually the best there is because the government wanted its military to excel. But almost everything EXCEPT optimal performance goes into its selection. Logistics, political power, economics, bribery, etc., gets first dibs. A politician who cares a serf was slaughtered because his weapon malfunctioned? Where? When? That creature doesn’t exist. It is up to you to chose the weapon that keeps you alive. And a quick to foul and jam gun, even if it is accurate, is not in your best interests in keeping YOU alive.

quantity over quality
QUANTITY OVER QUALITY
As has been famously said, quantity has a quality all of its own. World War Two was the pinnacle of this militarily-the Soviets, having failed to learn much against the Finns, doubled down and threw even more quantity against quality and won mostly as they allied with us and achieved yet more quantity. The Germans should have won, achieving unmatched superiority despite ingrown handicaps, and it took the combined meat-grinders of the globes two largest resource laden empires to wear them down. If you look at the casualty counts and study a bit of the typical general’s strategies, you’ll notice that the Americans had little finesse outside human wave assaults. That we actually had leaders that applied a bit of common sense and managed slightly better than the Russians who refused to part from the practices of the first war still doesn’t lend all that much extra credence to our side, given our supposed level of education and wealth. We were just as wasteful of human life, a practice our Army has perfected for over two hundred years without wavering, but failed to match our allies in percentages only because while their struggle was for life and death, ours was merely on behalf of the bankers. If the cause of avenging the attack on Pearl Harbor had been as widespread as the propaganda seems to suggest, there would have been no need for the draft.
*
For the survivalists, this old school military practice has been copied enthusiastically from our military, that brilliant organization of waste and stubbornness. Nothing delights the glorious warriors of the future apocalypse more than throwing gross ton weights of lead down range in a vain attempt at hitting something in shotgun fashion. Not that this isn’t a standard accepted military practice. It certainly is. And not that most survivalists could even think about being proficient marksmen. They really aren’t. Nothing tickles my sense of irony more than most folks fantasy of being snipers while loaded down with dozens of magazines for their semi-auto’s. But I’ll get off my most favorite hobby horse. My point is that their insistence on quantity has nothing to do with longevity, and everything to do with quality. They believe in a superior use of firepower winning the day. Granted, it certainly helps. But that superiority only wins the day initially. What then? You are still planning for a short collapse, followed by a swift return to a resource abundant future. But, alas and however, logic points to a very long, if nor permanent, dark age of resource contraction. Right now, today, this instant, in a still functioning machine agricultural age, in a petroleum fueled resource extraction economy, you need to be stocking up for the long haul post-apocalypse. Years and decades of grain reserves ( NOT weeks and months of high cost luxury foods ) and ammunition to last for multiple years ( NOT multiple gun battles ). Stop acting as if the nuclear war planning during the Cold War is valid. There won’t be a recovery after a few weeks in fallout shelters. That was NOT good planning, that was pap served up to fooling the sacrificial lambs they had a chance of survival. NO recovery. You are on your own for several lifetimes. Plan accordingly.

cali exodus 4
CALI EXODUS 4 ( final in series )
Californiafacation
The smart money moved out once the wealth creation was over ( read: one time energy draw-down was complete ), leaving the ignorant who believe the second law of thermodynamics was invalid, plus all the guest workers invited in during the good times ( they are still being invited it, just for the illusion of growth, but more on that below ). Where ever and when ever that smart money moved, they infected the new areas with the rabies disease of the Growth Paradigm ( how could they not, since that superstition allowed them to get rich and prosper? ). Now that California is falling apart badly ( it isn’t JUST the draught-that was just the straw that broke the camels back ), even the dumber residence want to leave. But that is only the smartest of the dumbest. The whole state population has yet to wake up to their true future and are still asleep at the wheel ( sometimes literally, as commutes are so jam packed and slow ). Yet, the politicians there are the worst, not changing old policies one iota, least any of their wealth and power being jeopardized. What screwed them then, they will keep doing. More growth, at any cost. At the cost of all fertile land. At the cost of livability. At the cost of turning the place into a death trap. Too many people without enough water has always been a Cali issue, but population growth is growth enough if true economic productivity is absent. Taxes increase as housing increases and more gasoline is sold, and someone has to sell more coffee and refrigerators. Which is why illegal immigration is not an issue with politicians. They could care less about how it effects residents of the state, as long as growth is continued. A business owner leaves for anywhere better ( except, perhaps, New Jersey or Oregon ), three illegals take his place. The end result is a welfare state, but the immediate effect is the wealth machine continuing.
*
Which is how every former Cali resident moved elsewhere feels. They don’t care which warm body brings in money ( and the government welfare kind is preferred because it is constant and secure-if only for now ), as long as one does. So, it isn’t just that the Cali Attitude is about jacking up real estate prices. It is about uncontrolled growth, every place outside the state, and the wrong kind of growth. When state coffers are empty, when the PetroDollar ends for good, the welfare payments will end and every city and county and state which houses old Cali residents and has gladly accepted the dregs of that state as a form of drawing government money in locally will suddenly be faced with armies of outsiders pissed and hungry. You are NOT looking at just hordes invading after the fall, but ALSO already imbedded "agents" for those hordes in place. How does that warm the cockles of your heart? Your home was never their home. They think of their home as back in California where the weather is warm, the politicians care about the poor and political correctness trumps small town conservative values. Don’t get me wrong, the hordes from Cali will still be HUGE. After all, welfare there is very generous. Why leave? But those that do leave before the collapse still think the same as those left behind. A cohesive community they do NOT make. They will turn against their new home gladly, part of a mob that was only pacified with Uncle Obammy money. Guess what the solution is? Cleaning house, immediately and ruthlessly, before you even have to deal with the new arrivals. Cleaning, as in the new revolutionary power killing off all proven or potential rivals. Got the fortitude for that?

cali exodus 3
CALI EXODUS 3
"This Sucker Is Going Down"
For some decades now, the smart money has been abandoning the state of California. I left in the early 90’s, myself, after being born and raised there, and have yet to run into a place as bad ( of course, I never visited YankeeLand ). I’m not completely insensitive to the plight of many stuck there for reasons beyond their control, but we all know if you are still there your life is a pitiful and miserable existence and you will soon die a horrible and elongated death. The problem for the rest of the country is that California was at one time incredibly wealthy ( ninth richest area globally, if I recall correctly ) and a lot of those smart people cashed out, took some of their lottery winnings, and invested it in poor areas, being the modern carpertbaggers. Poor areas that survived on poor wages because the cost of living was low. So, every swinging cheese dingus from Cali moved in and carpet bombed the real estate market with outside cash, forcing the cost of living sky high. However, being former straw bosses, these Cali pukes believed themselves to be the modern equivalent to The Second Coming, and treated the locals as nearly free serfs. They wanted low cost workers to mow their lawns, wipe their asses in old age and serve them fries with their burgers after they arrived in town in grand style in new autos ( the serfs were also allowed to wash their cars, but cheaply ).
*
For you familiar with how the economies of the rural South are conducted, with a few locals monopolizing the land market and influencing zoning, all to the benefit of New York banks, a story changing particulars but not generalities for 150 years, the Cali story should ring similar. Now, if the old bosses held half the country hostage over housing costs, that would be bad enough. But they have done far, far worse. They have changed the culture, being advanced agents for the Growth Paradigm. Conservative farmers and ranchers and small town residents are by nature cautious and a bit hostile to ideas that could turn around and bit them on the ass later. But when the big money rolled into town, it was all over but the crying, even if it took some time and few realized the end game details. Today, most places embrace growth ( for a compressed lesson on its dangers, look at the fracking boom. Taxpayer subsidized use of public infrastructure, damage and wear to same, then private company abandonment after the profits were secured ). And there in lies the trap they don’t realize they are in. By believing growth is the cure to all ills, most areas will welcome the poor and stupid into their towns ( as opposed to prohibiting rental property increases or other means ), a Trojen Horse from a state that believes and worships government welfare.
*
Next article, the Cali mentality infects other areas.

By believing growth is the cure to all ills, most areas will welcome the poor and stupid into their towns ( as opposed to prohibiting rental property increases or other means ), a Trojen Horse from a state that believes and worships government welfare.

Next article, the Cali mentality infects other areas.

AR v. AK
AR v. AK, part 96
For you few new readers, I despise semi-auto weapons for the Apocalypse. I won’t rehash the reasons- you can read my free book "Apocalypse Gun Porn". Yet, there are no longer any war surplus rifles available at a cost commensurate to their shortcomings ( my nipples perk up at the very thought of the British Lee-Enfield, my sphincter tightening at the prospect of its no. 9 bayonet being attached- yet, they are NOT worth $400 for a loose fitting shot out barrel ). The only other option for a rifle under that cost is civilian hunting long arms ( you MIGHT still find the odd surplus gun, but never much less than $300 ). Yet they have their issues. One being the less than stellar reputation of most companies, the thinking being more on the quarterly profit rather than an old style reputation. And the bigger one being, compared to military arms, they are rather fragile wallflowers. NOT what you want to enter the Apocalypse with, if you can help it ( no gun save the HK-91 generics are the perfect survival gun, and they suffer from being priced accordingly ). One option is to turn your semi-auto into a bolt gun. An AK can be rather easy, the AR requiring a gas tube block that will need a gunsmith to screw it down. To my mind, this is the way to go if you can afford a $600-$800 rifle. You get the rugged military construction, in a proven design ( in other words, you don’t have to worry about the manufacture, usually ), using relatively cheap ammo ( the days of 25 cent ammo are over-be happy it is still at 35 cent ) and, if you assemble it yourself, the bayonet option, without the ammo waste issue.
*
So then, we have to ask ourselves, after choosing for the mid grade price option ( frugal-civilian bolt, mid grade-AR or AK, high price-HK91 ), which one should I pick? I actually like the AR, once the powder fouling problem is eliminated. It is light weight, has zero recoil, and shoots like a mid range sniper rifle. But I like the AK ( I owned the SKS at one time, but the systems are similar enough ) because it is built like a tank and won’t fail you in the field, even if it is a poor marksman. Will the AR fail you if the fouling problem is eliminated? Sadly, yes. It is too high tech with too many fragile parts made to too high of tolerances. Which is why it is accurate compared to the AK which is built lower tech and sloppy. The AR is far superior, in a modern society with resupply, until the thing binds up in the field from dirt and residue. The AK is superior where re-supply is a problem and a gunsmith is not around. You know, like in an Apocalypse. You can garage tool fix a few AK problems ( remember the guy building a AK receiver from a shovel blade and its stock from the shovel handle? ), whereas the AR is strictly a part replacement proposition. Now, I grant you, there will be a LOT more AR’s out there, so in theory this won’t be a huge issue. Yet, an AK won’t demand a replacement, AND it won’t jam on you in combat. I still maintain ( as shown by my choice of the Enfield over the Mauser ) that dirt resistance is still better than tighter tolerances. It IS your life on the line, not a random soldier you command.

CALI EXODUS Part 2
Growth Til Death
When I speak of rich bitch welfare, I’m not per se just speaking of the farm subsidies for Cargile or Monosoto or the bankers bailout of trillions ( the central bank runs this country, so it is stupid to call their profit "welfare" ). That is the obvious parts. I speak more of the chicken feed crumbs the aspiring rich ( as opposed to the uber super rich who have no nationality and who sodomize the aspiring rich for sport, then refuse to invite them to their daughters coming out party. The old rich don’t just snub the new rich because they are snobs, they do it because their multigenerational wealth is protected by power and law while the new rich have yet to establish their position in the ruling elite ) got wealthy with. Think of the uber rich as the plantation owners and the aspiring rich as the straw boss of the slaves. They are privileged, but still completely under the power of the owner. The aspiring rich are there to control the population, to do the dirty work. The real estate tycoon is there to keep the serfs bound to the bankers by debt. The tycoon’s owner just sits back and allows them to be financed. If you look at California’s history, a few very rich dudes used their control over the government, and/or their links to the eastern banks to get other peoples money to create one of the West’s biggest public water projects. In effect, they created an oasis in the middle of a desert, and profited from that for multiple decades.
*
Poor or aspiring middle class folks migrated to California ( the attempted road blocks at the states borders to stop the Oakies were set up by the city of Los Angeles, most likely because the city had been expanding beyond its water supply from its first Anglo growth phase, but quickly suppressed for reasons obvious very soon ) precisely because it was still not crowded or dry, unlike all other agricultural areas ( attempts in the West to mimic California’s desert bloom success were not as successful, primarily due to overly silty rivers and improper soil, along with excessive evaporation rates ) at the time. Basically, the Dust Bowl was just an extension of the story of the poor in the South denuding the soil and then moving westward into new land. Along the way to riches from creating a gigantic new farm region, a host of straw bosses were utilized to funnel the wealth and control the upstarts. Until we come to the situation today where the region has hit and exceeded every unintended consequence limit, a husk of a former money machine, abandoned to the poor and the straw bosses, once again making California the bell weather state of the nation. The uber rich long ago abandoned the state, if anything just cherry picking the remaining plums. The straw bosses have been migrating out for decades to greener pastures. The idiot bosses and the poor remain.
