ready already

READY ALREADY
A few minions have mentioned the Midwest floods, expressing concern over severity and suggestions of further preps for any needy minions.  On the one hand, as Americans don’t eat much grain directly, and the Chinese might be more impacted, this might be yet another Nothing Burger.  If one squawks about it, there might be an extra helping of crow on that sandwich.  On the other hand, what if this is the relatively ignored final straw that breaks the camels back?  Well, to both I say, meh.  You are either ready already or you just don’t get it.
*
I’m not saying you don’t need to add to your preps.  I’m saying, you are either already ready or you will never be.  Topping off supplies only matters insofar as increasing comfort levels.  If you have the basics covered already, you don’t need extras, even if you never stop getting them.  Did I add ten percent to my battle rifle ammunition because of the Christchurch false flag shooting?  No, I did it because it went on sale ( actually, looking it up I placed my order six days prior-it almost makes me look smart ).  Did I finally order a 80% AR?
*
No.  And not because I judged the New Zealand news completely irrelevant.  All the Red Flag Laws being passed here would be a more compelling reason.  It is because while it isn’t the worst idea, I was still overruled by the Lizard King.  While doing a up to date price check on everything ( creeping up, in case you need to know ), stressing over where to put financial surplus ( yeah, White People Problems! ), in the end I felt most at peace with the decision to pay back the canned butter depleted savings.
*
I know that sounds silly.  I actually can hear myself.  Don’t I know that tangibles reign supreme and hyperinflation this way cometh?  Why, yes, yes I do.  But I had to listen to my gut.  The one telling me economic armageddon is here.  It isn’t telling me to buy more guns or to stock up on groceries or to can meat before the prices increase.  I could be way off.  But what else can you do but roll the dice?  Not that I’m playing with the rent or retirement funds.  I’m only gambling surplus.  Because I’m already ready, and have been.
*
Should you have run down to the feed store the day you heard about the flooding?  Sure.  It wasn’t like they ever have much in stock anyway ( I’ve written about this before, how most stores stock very little wheat.  Our towns second grain store closed their doors, so now the most you can expect is about 300-500 pounds on average to be in stock [ can you say, “just in time inventory”? ] which pencils out to Diddly Squat ).  It never hurts to get a bit more.  But you also should already have what you need, prior.
*
The whole point of stockpiling is not to live longer.  You can take a bullet the first hour of the collapse, or get run over by a bus tomorrow.  No, the point is ultimately Peace Of Mind.  The GOAL is to be supplied way past the point you’d reasonably expect to live afterwards.  But the POINT has always been to sleep better at night.  If every little thing that gets the news whores dripping crotch fluid, causing them erect nipples and clenching sphincters, if those cause you worry, you aren’t ready.  You should only be using tragedies to remind you to check preps.
*
Do you need a bit of a Top-Off?  Could those items stand to be rotated?  I told you the last two times about the toilet paper issue, when I got industry reports ( did you know the majority of our exports are NOT food or fracking oil, not Hollywood movies, but rather paper products? ).  What did I do?  I had to find extra room for more TP, because I was already well stocked.  I didn’t NEED more, but it was cheap enough to deep store extra.  I certainly won’t buy more ( except day-to-day replacement ) when prices rise.
*
I don’t panic.  I try to gaze into the crystal ball and prudently shop ahead of the crowd.  But the hall closet is already full of TP, the freezer is never allowed to get low, I always have six months to a year of dry goods for regular meals, and I already own far more ammo for my bolt gun than a lot of preppers have for their semi’s.  I probably already have more in savings than 90% of the ninety percent of the population who are poor.  I’ve lost track of my long term food storage.
*
This is the main reason I’m no longer concerned with timing the collapse.  It could happen tomorrow and I’d be fine.  I certainly don’t want it to happen ( I don’t want to get old, either, but I don’t get a vote ).  Now, remember how much I made last year?  I averaged exactly $300 a month.  That is super, as far as I’m concerned.  Minions to the rescue!  I help out with utilities by giving the NOL $100 a month, spend at most $100 on groceries and have the extra $100 to prep with.
*
This has probably been pretty standard for me, even when making far more.  I don’t spend that every month.  Some months I put that into savings, or stock up ahead of time for gifts, or pay back depleted funds I used to get a super bargain.  Sometimes I do nothing.  Other times, more.  But my whole point is, when you prep frugal it takes almost nothing in funding.  And when you are already ready, it is just a hobby.  It isn’t life or death, and hence not stressful.  But what if you are not ready?  Should you be worried, and about what?
*
As always, Food First.  And that isn’t because of the Midwest flooding.  Oh, they say, extra grain was in the silos, and they are wet and ruined, so you should worry extra.  Did you run down to the feed store already?  If you didn’t, I hold out no hope for you ever being ready.  We have had a LOT of food scares these last few years the Bison Global Media Empire has been publishing.  Remember that rice shortage?  The drought and ban on exporting wheat in Russia?  The flooding in Pakistan that wiped away a significant amount of crops?
*
Remember those couple of years with drought globally?  If all of that didn’t motivate you to buy food storage for twenty cents a day ( bare bones grain, minimum calories ), while you make $8 an hour minimum wage ( forty days food PER HOUR!!!! ), you will never be ready for something as severe as an apocalypse.  Don’t want to eat JUST wheat?  Fine.  Have it anyway, just in case.  What, you think you can’t barter it?  Industrial grown grain right now is like industrial mined silver.  It is being given away far below value.
*
The example given is a fifteen cent cup of gasoline.  It propels a small passenger car two miles up hill.  Now, buy fifteen cents worth of food and try pushing that car yourself, with those calories.  You won’t come close.  Oil has that kind of hidden energy we simply take for granted.  Minus oil, you will be amazed what everything costs.  Especially food.  Food, grown organically, might cost close to zero to make, but the demand from non-farmers makes it very expensive.  Without oil.  Stock all your Oil Miracle items NOW, and don’t ever think you have enough.
*
If you are not ready for Midwest floods, you cannot buy enough food now.  Not because there will or will not be shortages.  Because one time, if this isn’t it, it will be THE time that the crop failures do bring on catastrophe.  You need to already be ready.  Then, the next time it floods, or there is a drought, or the PetroDollar is crushed, or terrorists blow up the Houston refiners that provide about 20% of the nation’s fuel, you need not worry.  Once you no longer worry, I become mere entertainment worthy of adulation and support.

  1. Thought experiment for Minionites to consider along with this themed article, Jim. Folks should just take a free available day off, and disconnect from all the news, t.v., web, everything. Avoid any and all of those piddly distractions (those will disappear come collapse anyway) of any sort. Utilize either a worksheet checklist or just simple mental thinking reviews. Consider you are now it and at a ground zero, that will now be the start point to mental strategize all those what ifs and coulda shoulda things. (It will take a whole day, or more to really flesh things out and honestly assess) I think a humble Minionite will realize there is a quite a bit more of the "thinking, strategizing, planning, items" missing from those prepper stockpile warehouses, in much shorter considerations than the lardered up toilet paper. So what if a Minionite is always mumbling and talking to himself as he goes about doing things, (he is thinking shit out), well, and because there will be no do overs come collapse. Good luck all, we will indeed need some.

    1. I think I've made a career of thinking past mere stockpiling. It is a lot simpler than you want to believe, but harder to identify than you think. I know I've gone through 99% of my waking hours on auto-pilot, and I probably give this more thought every day than most.

  2. They should make powdered gas.
You know, just add water and stir.
Would be easier and less expensive to store.
If you laid all my ammo end to end it would go all the way down the road and back. Twice. Then it would have to be picked up.

New neighbors came rolling in last evening in their $150k Mercedes motor home. I've seen them at a distance, through the skelton trees with binoculars. I think they are vietnamese. He's a doctor, anesthesiologist, in Indianapolis and currently owns a $600 crib in that city. They have a 10 yo son. According to google maps it is about 600 feet from their front door to ours. Now, that desolate place on 18 acres in the great white north is looking more attractive though still very expensive. The ol lady is ready to move right now. 3 new neighbors on three sides, all from major metropolises, in less than 1 year. It's about time to git. Wouldn't you say?

    1. Mercedes makes a motor home? Christ, I really need to get out more. I have to admit, in your shoes, I might take on the debt to escape, also. Dammit, man, why can't things be black and white rather than grey? :)

    2. How differently we view certain things. In this circumstance , I'd view having a Doctor moving in next door as a huge asset. Especially if he is pessimistic about the world scene and who knows... possibly could be a prepper ? Never know, just because they got bucks doesn't automatically put them in the asshole category.

My immediate next door neighbor is a Vietnamese refugee. Dude can grow things ! Also is good at improvised things if you catch my drift.
Being an introvert by nature makes it tough to socialize and build tribe...but then tribe is good and good trbe is better.

Stockpiling is wise , even more so is the means to manufacture from scratch. Which has been my life long ambition to know how, to manufacture anything and everything from raw materials. Of course it is an impossible goal to have. Yet I have over the span of my life developed the reputation of turning chicken shit into chicken salad on the cheap.

    3. All I can say is, best of luck. It gotta suck getting a crap sandwich at this stage in life. Well, it ain't cancer ( knock on wood ), but as far as having a life time of planning crapped on.

    4. Spud-is turning chicken crap into chicken salad the same as tripping over a pile of crap and coming up smelling like roses? My son seems to have that gift, damn him! :)

    6. Jim- kinda sorta is the same as your son.
Primarily , I credit it with my unlimited amount of patience and knowing when to stop, pause and postulate then continue on. No such thing as good enuff for whom I'm doing it for. Having an attitude of quality is the same stuff , just done with more time involved is all.

When you say that wheat is the last thing people think of. In reality it is the basis for almost our whole food production. It is a primary ingredient.
You can look at everything produced by man as just a few primary ingredients. Just gotta know the various recipes and how to cook em.

Fact is, we as humans will go extinct before we ever run out of raw material.
Population booms, supplies get short which causes population to collapse. Suddenly what was in shortage is now in surplus. It is an endless cycle.

    7. We might never run out of material, but we need to be able to access it. At our tech level, deep sea oil is still problematic. One doubts we will ever get it all. When all the oil is used to get all the diffuse ore with heavy machinery, that will stay in place. There is gold in sea water. And too energy intensive to extract. Our entire current paradigm is based on cheap material. And this is the excess energy era. Without that energy, access is no longer a given. We will never run out, but that doesn't stop things from being dear.

An aside. Anyone familiar with the Obama is the grandchild of Eva Braun? I came across it yesterday and wowsers. I had to take a break from the internet. LOL.

    3. Glad that you liked it. The only other site that’s made me laugh so hard was this one:

The comments section is pure comedy gold! Though with what Jim has mentioned with regards to bloggers policies, I do have to wonder how they got away with some of those comments.

    5. Yes, it’s long since been inactive Jim. But there are many, many, posts, going back more than a few years. The comments section is about as wild west as I’ve seen (the blog owner supported free speech) and is nothing short of brutal at times :D

  6. Whenever I get to eat as much Norwegian salmon and organic grass fed prime rib as I want as event left-overs, I know that the world is going to hell. Yum. Belly full and the rest into the freezer for the next few weeks of good lunches. Brought to me with surplus energy, pure-stupid-excess, and jet fuel. Working on getting a corporate order (lowest price) of organic heritage whole wheat berries to put into neighborhood-surplus food-grade NRC90 buckets. pdxr13

    1. People leave prime rib? Yep, Caligula times. Wife #3 used to wait tables in a fancy place and we lived off of "scraps for the dog". I figured the microwave killed anything bad.

  7. I think I'm okay on most preps, but only have about two MONTHS of food. Yeah, I know, I probably have it backwards. Just cannot get myself stoked up to store food and convincing my wife of this fact would be difficult. I may have to rent a storage unit for food storage, then wonder if I'm setting myself for a theft of it later on.

    1. I can't change motivation, but as for storage-you could probably squeeze a years food under one queen size bed ( more than just wheat ). I've had a years wheat in a four by four closet, behind the hanging clothes ( place a piece of plywood on top of each bucket that gets stacked on, if you are worried about the weight ). What about the garage? Wheat doesn't mind the cold ( don't place buckets directly on the cement slab, or internal moisture ). A Mylar bag of wheat, on top of a high shelf ( for camo )? Just on the back of my computer desk, I have about 20k calories in peanut butter and sweet condensed milk. What about burying buckets in the back yard? Etcetera.
