survival hermitage 7-article 1 of 2 today

SURVIVAL HERMITAGE 7 ( article 1 of 2 today )
OLD & FEEBLE
As a general rule, any survivalist you meet is going to be over 35 years of age.  Around something like 90% are over 40 or 45.  When I was 45, I thought I was invincible.  I was living off grid, biking up to two hours a day commuting to work ( which was lifting thousands of pounds a day ), digging the hole for my underground home by hand.  All while eating two meals a day of whole wheat.  I was a fine specimen for the apocalypse.
*
I’m still pretty darn studly for my age, but the only thing still shining brightly is my hair.  And I’ve only JUST begun to seriously age.  I know it is going to get a lot worse.  The only thing going for me is I’m not on anything other than vitamin pills.  I won’t die from medical incompetence early.  If I could afford to go to the doctor they would keep tinkering with the engine under the hood until my wallet was drained, and then they would kill me off quickly with opioids ( this seems to be a real concern with seniors and “quality of life” triage ).
*
Most old humpers cling desperately to town living close to a hospital.  They really still think the medical industry has their best interests at heart.  Now, don’t get all twerked.  Most doctors are great people doing great things.  The problem is that they are constrained by their allowed training and their monopoly organization imposed mandatory practices.  And really, if you think about it, the medical industry has followed the same technology arc as society in general.  i.e., it peaked in the 60’s.  Not to say a lot of treatment isn’t better.  It is.  It is just that it is financially driven.
*
A computer today kicks ass compared to one just thirty years ago.  But it is still basically the same technology.  It is just improved over and over but from the same invention.  The same with our medical practices.  They have some really neat stuff, like a whirlpool visit where ultrasound breaks up a kidney stone ( compared to the old surgery and week recovery ).  But WHY did that procedure change?  I contend that as our ability to pay changed, so did the treatments.  Since all the Unions and big corporations that offered medical are defunct, quantity overcame quality.
*
There was an incentive to elongate treatment as deep pockets were paying the bill.  Now, given that half the treatments will end up being jewed down in price, either by government paid plans or free ER visits from the poor cutting into the pie, the other half paying quadruple, volume is paramount.  And treatments have followed this financial structure.  In and out, quick as can be.  In both cases, patient care was ignored for finances. The first procedure maximized discomfort and inconvenience.  The second risks inadequate care from velocity.  And now they want to Dr. Korvakian me?
*
This is a long way from Hermitage, but I’m making a point here.  The medical industry as a whole WILL kill you with synthetic kindness.  It is time to return to the old fashion philosophy that doctor care was for the rich ( just as you should be looking at college ).  You work like a mule until you drop.  You might have died early, but now everyone wants to outlive Methuselah.  Who wants a third of their life to be filled with mind altering ( but not in a good way ) drugs and pain?
*
Being a hermit, it is a lot easier to avoid unnecessary evils.  Socializing for too long.  Easy access to junk food.  Easy accessibility negating the need for exercise.  Crowded population spreading diseases.  Mind rotting entertainment.  Polluted air and traffic endangering your life.  Hell, you shouldn’t have to worry much at all with medical issues.  And just staying out of hospitals saves your life as those antibiotic resistant germs love live and breed there.  What, really?  You think a Turd World immigrant janitor is trying THAT hard to keep the place spotless?  Look in the kitchen of the nearest Mexican eatery.
*
But living without a hospital is just a bonus.  How is being old and feeble work for you as a hermit during the apocalypse?  Simple. Isolation will save your old and slow ass.  Far better than lots of guns will ( not to discount guns.  You need guns more than ever as an oldster.  You can’t run nor fight very well.  Just like a 100 pound girl, you need Colonel Colt to re-make you equal ).  You THINK you need to be around help.  You think a hospital and/or a tribe is there to help you.  No, no they are not.
*
The medical industry sees you as a limping wallet.  A tribe sees you as a limping pantry, arsenal and treasury.  Remember what we talked about.  If the tribe wasn’t one you were born into, there will be little true loyalty and everyone will remain selfish.  This is called biology.  How are you as a human programmed for society?  Pain.  Stupidity is out through pain and social acceptable behavior is installed through pain.  THAT is why you need to be tribal at birth, as tribal behavior will be beat into you.  Seriously.
*
The way tribes are going to be formed in the future is through pain.  Ether an authoritarian leader will punish and reprogram through pain ( although that is doubtful unless he is viciously cunning or smart and violent ) or group trauma will join everyone together.  Longer term, those that survive will do so by rejoining the 200,000 year norm of tribes.  But SHORTER term, a lot of people are going to die in that process.  In the short term, a lot of selfish people need to die off.  If you are alone, and more vulnerable from age, you WILL be safer.
*
In a group?  Their lifetime programming of selfishness and individuality will assure that they kill you.  You are old.  You can’t be much of a fighter, or even much of a fornicator.  You are a mouth breathing waste of oxygen.  It won’t matter that all the supplies are yours, slowly accumulated in a financially painful manner over decades.  Might makes right, and you are in the way of THEIR supplies.  Nobody is EVER evil.  Everyone justifies behavior to excuse evil.  Again, that pesky biology you cannot wish away.  Unless culturally trained by pain, you don’t suppress individual gain for any group.
*
If you aren’t quite old enough to be on the endangered list, and have a few years of Alpha Strong Man left in you, remember that rule of behavior.  Pain motivates and pain propagandizes.  What pain taught us, we firmly believe with no reservations.  To us, it is reality, not choice.  JUST choice, as in, “oh, we should all get together and work together and be a tribe because we were told it is a good idea”, that will NOT stand up under stress.  ONLY pain teaches.  Ignore that at your own peril.  We have forgotten most of life’s simple lessons.

  1. Yes Jim. Minions of the hermit or loner stripe should take heed. Position self physically or geographically so as to not be linked to or require any dependant contacts with the outside world. A rare foray to town for trade or supplies should be it. Those excess contacts are exposures to sources of risks. Those townie, commercial transaction, neighbor, church social contacts are all included in your threat matrix planning. People are contaminated with envy and jealousy with evil hearts tickled by the devil. If a Minion appears to have affluence or assets with a home, property, drives yuppie vehicles, shops like a valley girl at a mall, they will be seen as easy meat to the hyennas post collapse. Pace self at labor in older age and use common health sense to remain spry and productive even as the body gets old. This will allow Minions to still be a force to reckon with deep (years) into a collapse. The most dangerous is an old geezer at twighlight of life with little to lose if pushed back or poked with. Keep up the good work Jim, these topics must be covered and digested before the collapse and apocalypse games arrives at our doorstep.

I like that explanation. It discounts intelligence from the equation, and hence makes more sense.

    2. Yes, base animal deficiencies or of the seven deadly sins categories that all people have and either control and suppress or go full neanderthal. Rich or poor, smart or simple, everybody is included.

Apparently you haven’t been to a hospital lately Jim. A trip to most hospitals today is like walking through a 3rd world flea market :D

    1. Last time in, I'd say about 2013, it was something like 2AM taking in the ex. So I guess the ER diversity crowd was all gone.

    2. Hard hitting stuff right there. Get's right in there where you live. Pondering material. Caused me to reconsider a major life change my wife and I have been kicking around.

A thought that has haunted me for more'n 30 years now is when my wife told me about her grandmother finding her husband of 50 years sitting upright on his old tractor dead as a doornail out in the middle of the field. Both of my own grandfathers dropped dead in Sep 1960 at the same age, while on the job.

People used to die doing what they do. No most people seem to die in presubscribed places, hosptals, hospices, old folks homes, etc. surrounded by all the latest technology and drugs and battalions of minority employees to see to your every whim and hate you viciously when you're out of range.

I hope I either die in my sleep or have the where with all to make down in the woods and put one in my head. I don't want to be a science experiment or modern day nitwits.

    3. Whole heartedly agree on that last paragraph. I'd like to think I could go out as a Ecotopia ( the book ) suicide but it already seems like a lot of work and bother. And nobody would appreciate it. Nor would it change anything. A 357 breakfast will do.

    4. Agreed. And a very perceptive notion about age versus prep. Young folks don't have the money, and think they have infinite time.

One caveat: People seek hierarchy. Blood is one type, community another, etc. The new hierarchy that forms will be older (10,000 BC), more tribal, pragmatic, and likely have more of a need for PEZ than flowing locks of wonderful hair.

    5. You are correct, the savage mouth breathers have little need for art ( my hair ) and just want material goods such as Pez.

  3. Five thumbs UP for this edition of 'Every Action Gets You Dead'.

Each sentence speaks truth of absolute fundamental. I'm printing this edition to post on the fridge next to the shopping list. In big font so it is readable from the doorway.

    Why?

We live near the outskirts of goofball central == Eugene, Oregon, fUSA. Every moment of every day validates the observations in this edition of 'Everything You Do Will Be Wrong'.

I am an esteemed "Senior Member" on the vast Recreation Vehicle forum IRV2, and yesterday, the mod sternly notified me I received my 'second strike', this time for using the word "Mohammed" in conjunction with the phrases "sweeping out his hut and tending his goat" and mentioning his former full-time occupation of "sweeping out his cave". I vaguely recall tying that image to the issues of 'variable' Quality Control in Recreation Vehicle factories, or something like that. In my defense, I proudly point to the fact, this time, I commonsense compromised by capitalizing the word 'mohammed' (a first for me).

To avoid the dreaded 'third strike', I guess my only choice is to... nah. This Senior Member enjoyed poking the bloated corpses, but maybe it's time to play it safe by == as our co-commenter mentions == get much older while gaining less to lose.

    PS:
In case somebody thinks these are the demented ramblings of a 'keyboard commando', you could be right. Of course, you could be wrong, too. For my part, the glass of hair is always half-full.

Yes. Some form of aid for us older chaps is realistic. Take Andrew Jackson for instance:

"On this day in 1835, Andrew Jackson becomes the first American president to experience an assassination attempt.
Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter, approached Jackson as he left a congressional funeral held in the House chamber of the Capitol building and shot at him, but his gun misfired. A furious 67-year-old Jackson confronted his attacker, clubbing Lawrence several times with his walking cane. During the scuffle, Lawrence managed to pull out a second loaded pistol and pulled the trigger, but it also misfired. Jackson’s aides then wrestled Lawrence away from the president, leaving Jackson unharmed but angry and, as it turned out, paranoid."

Obviously, you do not want to count on your would be assassin having a prone to mis-firing, 19th century single shot pistol :D And you should for sure be carrying a gun. But also having a replenish-able weapon such as a cane sword for instance, or similar (not legal here in commiefornia) would be nice to put some distance between you and your adversary, if one were to run short on ammunition. Since they’re not legal where I live, I got my brother a tactical cane.

  5. “The medical industry sees you as a limping wallet.” Funny, but at age 77, I know this to be true. We’re simply livestock to them. Some of them are well-intentioned, but we overwhelm them. Also, think about EEO and “diversity.” Can you name any organization or profession that has tightened their requirements over the last 40 years?

    2. Expect worsening as time progresses. A full one payer, medicare for all, socialized medical system will occur eventually out of necessity as a means to keep the economy and system afloat. Your meds and innoculation vaccines (adultered like a mickey coctail) will be cherry picked according to your social score. Veterans should use their own system. (Alternative, amongst like kind anyway) This is to avoid waiting in a medical lobby with Luke Gook, Achmed Sandstorm, and Kawame Bannana as their new friends. Stay Healthy!

    3. You can't have medicare while you have the current monopoly medical industry. Just eliminating medicare would keep us out of a deficit yearly. How are they supposed to increase participation? Medical is like real estate. Prices go up, as incomes go down. Don't extrapolate too far.

  6. I believe that you are right to be concerned about censorship. I cleaned up my computer of extraneous files the other day. One of the many text files I had (many unnamed... just cut and paste of interesting tid bits) was covering privacy on the internet. Basically it said "the reason you & I haven't been caught yet is that we're not worth catching" in other words to small to bother with.

That is a strategy but its not enough for a true prepper. Plenty of people weren't worth the effort in WWII yet the effort was made.

    1. Until clear motives are seen it is hard to know what to expect. Too small isn't really a problem, with robots scanning for BadWords. Plus, unpaid help from the PC Police. So it has to be something else motivating.

  7. re:
Bison newsletter mention of daily water drinking

Coffee is a diuretic. Similar to soda pops and tea, coffee flushes water from the body.

Ten-ounces of coffee requires at least sixteen-ounces of water to replace the water lost. Four sixteen-ounce grande soy latte caffeinated beverages before lunch puts you a half-gallon low on water. Sixty ounces of water daily barely maintains a zero balance. You're sliding backward, your first clue is waking in an ambulance.

Starbucks lies to you. Farmers Brothers lies to you. Sanka. Lipton. Juan Valdez and his burro, up before dawn. The hippies at Celestial Seaonings and Happy Yogi. Profits before livestock. You should be used to it by now... normalcy bias.

That is just the start. A constant adrenaline dump results in adrenal exhaustion. And the adrenal glands sit atop the... anybody, anybody... kidneys. Would dialysis cut into your fun and games? You probably feel lousy after leaving the clinic, so a nice cuppa Joe will 'perk you right up'? Negative on that.

A constant state of dehydration is probably a bad idea. What lubricates the joints? What softens the bowel contents so it can pass without blowing your anus into hemorrhoids-ville? What helps maintain blood and lymph fluidity? How does each body cell receive nourishment and eliminate toxins?

The much-touted Rule Of Three, three days without water? Misleading. Parenting or patrolling or commanding a keyboard, how quickly does performance degrade without adequate water replacement?

Water, not corn-syrup artificial flavor/color Gatorade™®©. Fruit juice is concentrated sugars, so the body requires more water to dilute it... right before the pancreas goes on strike and diabetes sets in. Yes, Jamba Juice and Ocean Spray and Sunny Delight lie to you.

Fussing-about in hot humid climes as part of an aircrew, I repeatedly experienced the degradation of abilities due to dehydration. I could maintain an acceptable twenty-foot deviation from my assigned altitude, or I could struggle to try to keep it within a few hundred feet. And the other crews in my flight would == hopefully == notice before we get entangled.

As a Physical Therapist, I look for fine lines under the eyes, a slouching gait, thick-tongue speech.

"But I hate the taste of water!" So, add a tiny pinch of Keltic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt to a quart. This is rumored to help maintain electrolyte balance, a two-for-one win. Sugared water creates additional problems.

Lecture over. Like I cared about you in the first place. Oh, and welcome to the Internet, I hope you enjoy your stay.

      Soda waters.
I took a hit off a coke this morning. First time in more'n 4 years. Jayziss! How does anyone drink that stuff? The carbonation burn was unbearable. Surely that is a signal that something's not right about that stuff. How in the world did I drink them daily for 30+ years? That was probably my last experimental taste. But maybe I'll get curious again in a few years, who knows?

    3. My heartburn says No Coke. I can drink fruit soda's but I try not to. Yeah, I used to live off of the stuff, and now am smart enough to mostly quit. I'd say three or four twelve packs last me a year.
