I think one of the universal delusions amongst survivalists is that they are going to be Large And In Charge.  They will become the Big Cheese both because they are smart enough to prepare and because it is after all Their Stuff.  This might not be so delusional as to assume leadership of a large group such as a war band or the entire village, but probably it is.  I’m not sure what a group of Prepper Top Monkey’s joining together would do to assert leadership status.  Perhaps they just splinter and decentralize and are vulnerable to being picked off one by one ( like small kingdoms that didn‘t get the memo about the nation state ).

*

This isn’t even all that ridiculous.  One of the characteristics most likely shared is a distrust of the government.  They lie to us and they hump us.  By our very nature we mistrust and then must figure things out for ourselves, leading us to the conclusion that We Know Better.  Which is probably true.  We could do a better job.  When you don’t have a sack full of leeches being enriched off short term thinking if not downright sabotage, you could indeed run things more efficiently and with more intelligence.  Not that you would succeed, because if you think you could runs things better, in reality you have no idea the problems that need to be managed.

*

Just a short jaunt into Militia Porn fiction, inevitably the author talks about the infamous “if they don’t work, they don’t eat” dictate.  It is nearly universal in these stories.  Anti-communist is all-American, after all.  So the solution is, evidently, fascism.   Hitler had full employment, and he was regarded as a hero because of it.  He took a country with recent memories of literal starvation and freezing in the winter, hyperinflation and embargos, and presented a functioning economy and a strong military.  Remember how that one worked out for him?  Anti-communism is usually not automatically pro-freedom.

*

I’m not denying the necessity of everyone working.  I’m saying we are usually so indoctrinated in anti-Communism that we think acting fascist is in fact freedom when it is just another form of control.  Just trying to make a point here.  Benevolent dictatorships usually work out pretty darn good.  What is your family, after all, if not a matriarchy ruled by a charming little gal called honey/mom?  Everybody loves her and does as she says, not because they agree with her but because of the fear of her wraith.  That is your workplace, minus the love part.  And I’m sure your work reinforces your anti-communistic blindly pure hated since most corporations are solidly built along Soviet lines.

*

The Party Faithful get the supervisors jobs and the high salaries and vacation cabin on the Black Sea, overseeing production numbers on the factory floor and adhering to a Five Year Plan.  The Politically Correct hires, worthless and incompetent, are the Potemkin Village false face fronts, their sweet little brown female faces beaming their glee at surfing a desk which never sees any real work cross its surface.  Nothing of substance is ever accomplished, but theirs is a beehive of activity as everyone rushes to prove their brand of supervision will be the one to ensure results.  Paper is shuffled and meetings are vibrant and full of jargon.  And Jesus weeps.

*

So, by enduring painful life lessons reinforcing our hatred for Communism at work for the corporation, a young lifetime full of imperial propaganda, and being in an echo chamber of like minded folks, we are all ready to form our fascist family, our benevolent dictatorship.  Seeing all the idiots out there with their PC and dictates by committee, we are sure we can do a much better job ( it worked for Hitler! ).

*

The Soviet Union ultimately failed not because it was communist.  Mercantilism, capitalism, fascism, democracy, communism and all the hybrids are pretty close to the same thing as they are all needed to perform the same function.  Which is to feed everybody, keep everyone docile, and enrich those at the top.  Only the management styles are different.  The Soviets were no more gangsters than any others, but they didn’t pretend they weren’t.  Yes, they abolished the excesses of wealth and poverty by redistribution.  The common peoples lives still improved.  But eventually, once equality was better spread out, the lack of consent to living under terror became an issue.

*

All governments must rule by the consent of the masses.  Like mom in her happy little family.  The Soviets were mom, who never stopped berating and beating.  People want mom to be pleasant, say please, and only whip out her Bitch Face as a last resort.  They don’t mind being told what to do, as society is usually a bonus for them and it is easier to submit than try to manage all the separate parts.  That is what I mean by aspiring leaders having no understanding of how to rule.  If they understood what it takes to actually manage any size group, they would know they don’t want the thankless impossible task.

*

Capitalism only works better than communism because through greed,  all the component parts act reliably.  There is less to manage than in central planning.  Neither is more efficient per se ( although I would argue the Soviet model, even with insane levels of military spending, did not waste near the amount of resources as the consumerist capitalists ).  Neither respects the rights of the poor any better.  Again, the communists are probably one up on that aspect also, restricting unaltered greed at the top to lift the bottom a bit higher.  Neither system is fairer than the other ( and what exactly is the difference between a high ranking Party members son going to the better school and a rich bitch’s son going to Yale? ).

*

The difference in the systems is that the Soviets allowed the iron fist under the velvet glove to be all too often glimpsed and even gloried.  They didn’t hide their beaten’ stick.  The US, home of the free and brave and stuff, is no less violent to its non-conformists.  Threaten the system and if you are lucky you lose everything to the attack lawyers.  If you are unlucky, you end up one lone White Boy in a prison full of Black bucks who wish you every harm.  You don’t even need to use drugs-the helpful career cop will be happy to plant the drugs in your possession ( all it takes is the intelligence community agent to whisper in the ear of the Chief how the target is a pedophile and all involved would be more than cooperative in the frame-up ).

*

This is a long way around the subject matter.  It will make more sense as we continue tomorrow.

  1. You just described why I have been self employed for the past 31 years, half my life. I'm pro-freedom but had to live under communism for the first half of my life, age 1-19 under parents rule, 19-23 under army rule, 15-31 under corporate rule, until such time that I got fed up enough to take the bull by the horns.

Frankly, I'm a much better commander, much much better, of my life than all the people that tried before.

The whole world can line up for that communist boot if that's what they want but way over there on the far right horizon if you look real close you'll see me going my own way, as it should be.

    1. The communist managers are no worse than you, the difference is that they manage the collective, you manage yourself. It is just that yourself must be sacrificed to the collective. And that includes the US as much as it did the USSR. How about your grandpa that died of cancer sucking in above ground testing radioactivity? He took one for the team.

  2. If you think you can manage a disfunctional group of preppers after SHTF, good luck. Just because you managed 200 people in the factory or the military, does not mean you can be the boss of what a typical group will probally look like after the collapse. Go get a job managing 50 volunteers for some non-profit, or go to a fast food place where there are plently of people looking for a 8-10 dollar a hour job. You will hear" I can't be here Friday night, we have a ball game or Prom or whatever"

    1. T hat was one of the reasons I got out of management, finally. I was good at it, balancing pleasing the boss and letting the workers know I was on their side as much as possible, but it is a young mans game. The headaches never stop, and if you don't drink there is no escape.

    2. I was a squad leader in the army....for 2 weeks.
I was doing more work than anyone else!
How do you *make* friends do their jobs?
You tell 2 guys to get in there and clean the latrine and they laugh and head out the door, meanwhile, the platoon sgt is coming in after lunch to check the progress. He doesn't care WHO does it as long as it gets done, and that WHO was me. Fuck that. I got out of that shit. I can't work for other people. period.
      It's a mental thing I suppose.

Oh yeah, if I had article 15'd those assholes that walked out the door then I would have been considered worse than hitler. When you cross over from EM to NCO it's a lonely road.

    3. I agree with you, but in the Army at least when you did once in awhile run across the "cool" NCO's ( ie, they refused to drink the green Kool-Aid ), everyone respected them and worked with them willingly. Yes, I imagine it took a time to get there, and you had to watch the knives in your back from the Lifer Dogs ( that was my nickname, BTW, but it was used sarcastically since I hated the organization more than anyone else in the squad ). I'm glad I didn't go down that thankless task, but I sure appreciated those that did. All the bad attitude screw ups seemed to get the cool NCO. Put the problem out of sight.

    4. Every time I've held authority I've hated ever minute of it. Fortunately I've learned my lesson and will never seek nor accept a leadership role, even when the job is being done poorly I will NOT push the idiot aside and take over.

    5. Practically every job that I’ve worked at, I was put into a position of authority over others, despite showing no desire to do so whatsoever. That’s what happens when you work with a bunch of fuck ups. I worked with this one guy years ago, that stated that his key to success in avoiding this unpleasant situation was to do what was expected of him, but no more. He even vocally stated that he didn’t want to have to think while on the job. Looking back, I think he was on to something there. Obviously you’ve got to play it just right. You want to be valuable enough to not get laid off or fired, but not so valuable that you get “promoted” to management.

    6. This last job I straight up told them in the hiring interview I'd be happy to do my job and someone else's, but don't ever put me in the position of being responsible for someone else and their performance. As my reward they expected me to do the job of three people, not just two, and stuck me under the worst most incompetent boss ever outside the military. Then I was supposed to do her job too. You can't win.

  3. Well...you got a good subject. Kind of teased us around. Hope tomorrow you finish it justly.

OK, kiddies realty check time. Most of the survivalist/preppers are dead meat. They are fucking misfits that can't, I repeat CAN'T fit in and prosper in today's world. Yet , when everything goes to hell then think THEY are going to make it.

OH! I don't want to work for the man! Oh! My boss is mean to me! Oh! Oh! My wife won't let me be the boss! The whine whine and whine goes on FOREVER!

99% of survivalist/preppers will serve only to provide supplies to the real predators when the SHTF. Boys and girls... don't even fantasize about how you are going to barter your shit. The predators will kill you as you hide sniveling in you little hidey hole.

    1. Wow! Don't beat around the bush, tell us what you really think! :) Please let me know if today's article justifies your anticipation. Most days I'm raring to go and can't wait to continue but others I lose the train of thought. Not often-I usually distil the ideas down to simple bare bones. Even I can't screw it up. But I also need to stay on the top of my game and I know you'll be the one to call me it.

    2. Sounds like your describing wannabees not preppers.

  4. Kind of long. But you might get something out of it (infrastructure, oil and gold)

    1. Oh yeh, I love this guy. Have e-mail notices of his articles. I appreciate the heads up. He is a bit blind toward the end result, but I love him for having his head out of his ass on oil and the economy.
