tripwire

TRIPWIRE

*
Will there be a tripwire event?  For the longest time I’ve been skeptical of this idea.  Why?  Because far too many preppers are awaiting the “tripwire event” that let’s them know when to bug out.  When to empty their bank account and buy supplies.  When to finally worry about everything they should have concentrated on years ago, like the danger of crowds.  Or the vulnerability of our currency ( who gives a crap about the stock market?! You know, I know and Ross Perot knows that the bitch is rigged and has no bearing on the economy other than an inflation sponge.  Worry about the PetroDollar-there is a much more dangerous trend ).

*

The reading of post-apocalypse fiction is particularly rank with the smell of this concept.  We all read PA fiction “to give us ideas on how different scenarios could unfold”.  Most people mean how the collapse occurs.  I mean it as a tactical tool.  As in, I didn’t think about that trick the enemy will use.  But all of us should beware that even if only subconsciously we are having the tripwire concept reinforced.  Because book plots don’t exactly encourage long term subtle multifaceted cause and effect system wide disintegration.  It is all tripwires.  One day the character is dealing with a ball busting wife and a craphole licking boss and the next the zombies are shuffling around and moaning.

*

My basic understanding is, hey, signs of collapse are all around us.  Why are we waiting for a tripwire event?  What will we do differently then?  Not go to work, eat from the pantry rather than the store and finally be able to shoot the loud obnoxious neighbor.  Okay, great.  You need to know when all that is allowed and encouraged.  But you can’t know what events are going to flip us over the waterfall lip.  It won’t be as easy of a read as the obvious power being shut off.  Oh, but I am a prepper!, you explain as if to a small retarded child.  I’ll KNOW!

*

Why?  Because your digital watch and cell phone will show no screen?  So you know that it was an EMP rather than the standard regular black out caused by deferred maintenance?  All we can be sure of with a flare or device is that wires intensify the effect.  There are too many contradicting claims and studies out there to know for sure if cars will still run or if anything without a wire will work or not.  We can guess and plan but we don’t know for sure.  It isn’t even probabilities but suppositions.   We all Faraday Cage small electrics just in case because it costs almost nothing and is a better safe than sorry.  But our knowledge is so incomplete it isn’t even funny.

*

( you’ll recall that Carrington was telegraph wires, the Pacific nuke was only streetlights and the Canadian solar effect only hit the electric grid rather than cars or electronic devices.  You can argue the pulse wasn’t strong enough.  I’m only arguing that this is incomplete information regardless ).

*

So in the case of economic collapse, we are looking at an indicator that no longer applies ( the stock market, controlled and managed since 1987 ).  In the case of an EMP we don’t even know if we’ll know.  Not for sure.  What other tripwires are false indicators?  Folks keep looking for the event that will tripwire the federal government into a police state or dictatorship.  Why?  There is already one in place.  We have “indefinite detention without trial”, just like in the worst South American dictatorship.  We already had concentration camps and asset forfeiture in 1942.  The NSA gathers far more intelligence on its citizens than the Stasi ever did.  We already torture prisoners and prisoners of war.  Calling them enhanced interrogation techniques doesn’t stop making it torture.

*

Why are folks waiting for the police state tripwire if it is already a reality?  Because they fear for their tacticool plastic poodle shooting carbines?  The police don’t have to go door to door to confiscate guns.  They never needed proof that Al Capone killed people ( they also didn’t need proof that Charles Manson killed anyone.  Nor does all the proof in the world a pharmaceutical company CEO is killing thousands mean he’ll end up in prison ), they just got him in jail through tax fraud.  Just like the 60’s radicals were jailed on marijuana possession rather than on any terrorist or treason acts.  You don’t need gun control when you have food control.

*

Your tripwire observation skills are wasted on the wrong targets and this both makes you vulnerable and wastes your time and increases your stress ( like when your blood pressure spikes every time there is a mass shooting and you think gun control is right around the corner.  You mean, like it was in the 1930’s, the ‘60’s and the ‘80’s?  All that did was make guns far more expensive. It was Po Boy gun control, not rich bitch gun control.  Class warfare is not gun control ).  No one is saying you should ignore the news and avoid situational awareness.  But you should be aware that there are few tripwire events you can rely on.  You aren’t going to be thrown in the pot of boiling water which you can jump out of.  Rather you are already in the pot and you can’t tell when the temperature is going up.

*

More than likely, the power goes out and even with your Vast Important One Of A Kind Knowledge, you’ll just think it is a regular power outage.  You’ll stay in place like all the rest of the sheeple because you ain’t as aware as you think.  If you were, you’d be living off grid anyway, far from the crowds.  I would wager at least a jelly filled donut that every single swinging dingus minion out there has a higher level of skills than I do and could escape the Rat Race far easier than I did.  Your only excuse is very important to yourself, but that won’t change the consequences.  You are using tripwires as an excuse and a crutch.  Not that I’m saying I’m much better.  I still use the Better Than Nothing “even if I’m not living far enough away I’m still able to get away”.  It’s okay to do BTN.  Just don’t ignore the risks in that.

  1. I would like to suggest that when people stray into survivalism or prepping, it was caused by some sort of tripwire event, be it only emotional.

This event upset their life in a significant way, and from their own perspective, it might be the single most important event in their lives. If I see my own story, there has been an accumulation of hints and evolutions I took notice of, until something completely unrelated happened and then all these hints made sense.

Since we trust our own experiences far above anything else, it's quite probable that we are in this same process as before (accumulating hints and reading articles) and we believe there will be some sort of tripwire event again, but "this time we'll be ready."

People do upset their lives one to two times in a lifetime, so they're not really eager to go "all in" again. Every survivalist was something else before, nobody was born into this.

Some people follow their logic to its conclusion, like Lord Bison moving out to Junk Land in the desert. Some exert caution because they have been betrayed by the decisions of their former selves (likes the epic boobs of #2) and could be mistaken again. We never have enough information about what is really going on, news are nothing but a cheap JJ Abrams version of a Kabuki Theatre.

Finally, there isn't much else to do besides getting ready for the upcoming Major Inconvenience, we are unable to build up any real alternative society : the only alternative society in the US had people called Geronimo in them and they were exterminated to gain the ressources they lived upon.

So, because the collapse is inevitable, ideally your solutions should become increasingly indifferent to wether a tripwire event occurs or not. As for myself, as long as I can I accumulate food and stockpile different forms of energy, like a bear preparing to hibernate.

  2. Jim, a very well thought out article. Your thinking/analysis has improved. I sense improvement. Thanks for sharing that bit about what what tricks you look for in reading material"I didn’t think about that trick the enemy will use."

Regarding the collapse here is an article from Salon magazine, the magazine IS NOT important. The author Alfred Mccoy, is a thinking giant in my mind. You can do your research on him to make your own determination.
Enjoy and keep up the good work.

    1. Thank you for the link. It looks like another five minute download wait, so I'll get to it. A lot of socialists and Lefties have a lot of important things to say. Such as:

The problem with them is that their critical thinking stops as soon as their paradigm is threatened. The good ones push through that, but then must waffle to appease their fellow cult members. Just like the Right. Thank you for the compliment/observation. I can't take too much credit for any improvements. Lack of stress and the distractions from a job helps, which is only enabled by Minion Support. I know I don't get the support without cause, but I fully acknowledge if they were simply selfish pricks they would be parasites rather than patrons.

  3. "...zombies are shuffling around and moaning..."
    =====================

LOL Really, what's with all that moaning all the time, are they in pain? Or is that some directors idea to create a 3rd dimension to the whole thing? I tried watching an epi of that show, "Walking Dead" and couldn't get through it. Never seen it before and don't get the fascination with it. I mean, isn't that zombie nonsence right out of the comic books? There may be some tidbits of redeemable info in that show but I'm not willing to forfeit chunks of my life while wading though mountains of idiocy. Please.

But yeah, that trigger effect, who know what it will be or even IF it will be? Maybe the whole thing will come down some other way, or not come down at all, but just keep sliding to gommorah . Then, each of will start to experience our own personal SHTF momemnt/life. Probably the smart thing, if you're already convinced there is going to be a collapse, is to already be living that way for the most part, to be weening yourself off the system and into self reliance/tribal life. The system is a crutch, as it were, so trying to walk with your own feet can be nothing but good. Think of the system as a handrail on a stairway, you don't really need it but if you do it's there - and you can still function if it ain't.

    1. Like that analogy of the handrail. Walking Dead is stupid on the face of it, but if you enjoy anthropology it is fascinating ( logistics aside-as the book Freehold as was just discussed )

  4. So, you are saying that my fiction is as good as Rand? Cool! Shall I put you down for an autographed copy of my Gringo's book?

  5. When the power goes out, one of the first things I do is check the radio. If the local stations are on, I figure it's a normal living-out-in-the-woods outage. If those are also out, and it's happened once or twice, I check the shortwave to see if it's a regional outage.

I expect that one of these days everything will be down, and things will get interesting.

    1. For some reason, when our power goes out the intersection a block up never loses the traffic light. It's an easy tell. When I lived out in the boonies, we never had a clue if the world was still running until I went to work the next morning or two.

  6. The trigger event occurred in 1913 with the passage of the Federal Reserve Act. Or was it Lincoln and the war of northern aggression?

    1. I'd say without the Southern colonization the US couldn't have started building towards empire. The Fed got us from that starting point. The empire was founded on the bodies of Southerners, civilian as well as soldiers, and European immigrants swelling the ranks of the Yankees. Rich humpers using bodies as fuel for the industrial machines. Yes, in some ways it was Go Empire or Be Defeated, but one has to wonder if we would ever really have been invaded. We might have been the exception to the rule. So was empire ever justified as self defense? You could make the case for others such as Germany or Russia, certainly Japan and even China ( the commies were a natural outgrowth from all the invasions and occupations ).

  7. The trip-wires most preppers look for are regional or national or global in scope even. Silly. I don't care if the power goes out in china. I care if *I* can get power.
A more important trip wire for me is if my employer starts laying people off left and right. Or if the area around me loses power. The collapse is already happening - one person at a time just like the end of the world - one death at a time...

    1. Of course, if California loses power, will they all surge north and southeast, or straight at me? Odds are the foul putrid whores are going to want to move here and bring their poison culture.
