bug out 3 of 3

LONG BUG OUT 3

Okay, we’ve talked the unemployment-being-the-signal-to-bugout theme to death.  You have a mid size dependable vehicle that gets 20 mpg and you have 1500 miles to go.  Most of your supplies are at your bug-out location, with the bare minimum at your city location ( just in case something keeps you there ).  A six month supply of wheat is six Mylar bags, twelve assuming a spouse.  Two or three water filters, a grain grinder, two guns and a minimum load of ammunition will easily fit in a small vehicle if the clothing ( you do have plenty of winter wear and linen, yes? ) is lashed to the outside.  I know there is a name for them, but the “two washers and a bolt with an eyelet” doohickey can be installed on the trunk so you can securely lash the duffle bags of clothes outside, still leaving room for your gas cans.  If you have a twelve gallon tank you need another sixty five gallons of gas.  I can’t imagine you can haul that many five gallon jugs, so get as close as you can.  You might not have any choice but to have a half way stash.

*

No, Dorothy, it is NOT paranoid to assume the lack of gas.  Gasoline is a JIT item, as is most everything else, and any small disruption such as the 5% OPEC embargo era will see massive shortages.  Economic communications break down ( the computers communicating with each other for EBT payments-how about a hacker attack paralyzing our entire economy that way? ), overseas supply breakdown, delivery company bankruptcies, etc.  Much can go astray.  You might need to rent a storage space in a small town on the interstate, buy metal Jerry Cans, fill them with ethanol free gasoline and stabilizer, and eat the cost of that month after month.  But, hey, you piss away $200 a month on cell phones and cable, so $30 for a storage shed isn’t too God-awful.  You might also need to pretty much drive straight through, be armed and never leave the car unattended.  It isn’t Beirut levels of combat, but certainly not a care-free jaunt.  Sixty miles an hour, to minimize dangerous driving while tired, gets you there in one complete day.  Yes, a bit more, for pee breaks, stretching your legs and grabbing some McPukes burgers, but more or less twenty four hours.  Plan the trip so that you arrive half way during business hours of your storage location.

*

You can plan on buying gas if it is available, and also plan on taking food like jerky and whole wheat crackers plus energy drinks if nowhere looks safe to shop at.  And, yes, I’m aware you are not supposed to store gas in a storage locker.  I’m sure your local firefighter appreciates your common courtesy in this matter of common sense.  But he wouldn’t put you up in his house if you run out of fuel, would he?  And, yes, I might be too paranoid in this case.  You might assume gas won’t be an issue since you are leaving early enough.  Fine.  Stash a bottle of whiskey in your supplies and when you are stuck in a poor location surrounded by cannibal bikers, raise a glass to me being right to be paranoid and eat your own bullet.  Kidding.  Kind of.  Actually, the supplies in the car might just be enough to see you safely through if you never see your bug-out location.  After all, other things could see half to three quarters of your supplies destroyed or denied you.  That is why you have multiple stashes.  I just think planning for fuel outages isn’t the worst idea.

*

Perhaps a stash of food, ammo, filters and the like at your gasoline storage locker wouldn’t be a bad idea.  Both as a supplement to the gas, and as the sole equipment if you planned on no gas supply at all.  It would be your oasis in the desert assuming worst case ( not sure if you’d want to store any guns there-in the case of theft, do you want a gun you purchased to be used in a crime?  Not to mention the monetary loss ).  I don’t think all that many people are going to be content with a bug out location half way across the continent, so surely this is worse case?  Even if for some bizarre reason you were traveling even further, the same planning principles should hold.  I understand you think you can outthink the collapse and time your bug-out right before the infrastructure starts seeing breakdown, but I would advise you to reign in your hubris.

*

It is bad enough that you are staying in the big city.  You know it is not the best idea.  Don’t compound that less than ideal strategy by adding on delusion and optimism for your bug-out.  Did anyone forecast the OPEC embargo in retaliation for our stance on the war?  Did you see the collapse of the Soviet Union?  Did you time the 2008 economic collapse?  Did you stock up on rice before it was rationed, BECAUSE you knew that would happen?  Most bad things are not anticipated other than in generalities.  Don’t assume the best, assume the worst.  Waiting to bug out is less than ideal, even if completely understandable.  Hell, most folks are probably much better anchored to their families than I am.  I understand my bias shows through.  But when you accept a less than ideal living situation, have a smart exit strategy.  Have enough supplies with you in case of attack or break down.  Assume no supplies en route.  Assume you don’t get out quite early enough to avoid SOME problems.

*

Once you get there, more likely than not, you will need to live almost normally for a period of time.  You’ll still need to take care of business.  You know you left in time, but you can’t guess how long before those in power are violently overthrown.  You need to take care of your bills by declaring bankruptcy, file for Food Stamps and other legal and everyday living arrangements.  None of it might even matter, disruptions occurring too quickly for anyone to care about your problems, or things could drag on for a long time.  If you are legally stuck owing on your mortgage, I hope one of you got yourself off the document ( fake divorce, incorporating, or however else you manage ) so that the other legally liable one can “disappear” when you leave the obligation.  The debtor is off any papers on the bug-out, doesn’t apply for benefits, just disappears.  The other brings home the bacon, if applicable.  I hope your marriage still retains that level of trust.  If you are able, how about getting a lawyer to release you from the obligation, now, if possible, and you stay renting?  I know that might be a stretch for the spouse to accept, but it is an option.

*

I guess what I am valiantly straining to achieve here is to convince you that there is a medium position you can achieve.  Not panicking now and living on junk land, poor and miserable and divorced and hounded by the courts, nor staying in an urban jungle so long you need to fight your way out using a $100,000 armored car mounted with semi-auto linked ammo $7k civilian version SAW’s with FLIR scopes.  You can have the best if both worlds, with almost no extra cost, if you merely possess the discipline to make a plan and stick with it.  This is not a place for “yeh, buts”.  It is not a place for hubris or denial or wishful thinking.  If you habitually lie to yourself to minimize pain, this is NOT how you want to plan your Crowd Escape.  Better to just do it now and remove your questionable judgment from the mix.   I would also suggest you seriously contemplate your life attitude at this point, with a pot of heavily sugared coffee on a morning you remain uninterrupted.

*

You know you will be unemployed one day.  It IS going to happen.  Are you sure you want to wait until the very bitter end?  Is it possible to embrace a near cashless existence, rather than fear it as you do now?  What are you working for?  To appease the wife?  To keep from getting bored?  For meaning in your life?  Habit?  Do you want to roll the dice on the timing of the collapse because you think it is a safe bet, or do you do it because you fear change?  No right answers.  I fear the worse and settle for close to least.  You aren’t me ( I’m sorry ).  You see things your own way.  Just be honest with yourself.  I actually want to help.  Believe it or not.

  1. A dickhead with a bugout location 1500 miles away is entitled to a Phd in assholery. Where the frig do you come up with this shit? How would someone build and stock such a distant location...oh yeah, maybe by hiring a squad of illegals perhaps? On top of which you further convolute plausible reality with a constant rant of minimum amounts of ammo...how many friggin people you think you're gonna kill before some bugger taps your ass? 10,000 rounds!!??? Enough already! Now fake documents and disappearing? That is the notion of fiction and ads from the back pages of Soldier of Fortune from 30 years ago. Do you have any notion on how much information various institutions and government agencies have on each one of us swinging dicks? Son you can't begin to disappear if they really want to locate you. You're beginning to stray from your message and I'm caused to speculate you're not getting out enough or if your perhaps suffering from an overindulgence in wheat berries or other weird shit of a specious counter culture. Forwarded with respect and devotion from a loyal minion. By the bye...your hair is looking stunning of late.

    1. Because you praised the hair I'll take you seriously and reply politely, as is the rules. First, I just got done eating my brunch of whole wheat flour goodness, flat bread with butter. Breakfast was whole wheat toast, lunch will be diner leftovers. It was pretty yummy. Okay, do you WANT to travel that distance? Hell, no! But how about if you have family there, all prepped up? Or inherited land, free to you and you are poor. Didn't I just ask yesterday ( maybe the day before ) if it was feasible to buy land closer? If not, it is because that is your only option. Not sure if I understand your stance on my minimal ammo comment. You are bugging out PRIOR to the collapse. Remember? Pink slip is your bug out notice. I don't think I'm straying from the message, if you consider that FRUGAL prepping. Damn, writing about it I think I want even more whole wheat. I think I have enough left prior to grinding more, I'll go make half a nuke bread. Thanks for the suggestion! Replied to with the same respect and gratitude you remain a minion. Peace.

    2. Because some Dickhead has aging parents 1500 miles away who the Dickhead is taking care of. They are unable to live at the BOL. Everyone is different. The wife, the children, the grandkids are all 1500 miles away except me, the Dickhead.

But because the BOL is fully stocked ( 5 yrs food, forever gun x 5, year round stream on the property) I only need to figure out a way to get there.

I have twice made the drive straight through in 20 hours. So, unless it's and EMP, CME, or Yosemite blowing its top I "should" be able to get there. But if not I have enough in Bug Out Gear to walk if I have to.

Not everyone has the luxuries that you have. We are not jealous, but with your attitude you can go FY.

    3. Annon 10:24 you are right and wrong - Being invisible isn't possible if they really want you, but if you make it difficult for them and won't be rewarding to go after, they wont go after you. If assets are not in your name they have to jump through additional, costly, legal hoops to sue for those assets. If the assets aren't worth it, why would they bother.
Just like the UN wont come for one families year or two of wheat berries, when they can go to a corporate grain silo and get TONS to impound. (unless you stick your head up as a great target to make an example of).

    5. Old Dog-I think sometimes we just don't think about things from a certain viewpoint. It's not necessarily being dickish, although the delivery might be, but lack of perspective. For instance, I can see the Lefts view about the rich, but not their embrace of PC. What seems reasonable to them, I can't fathom. Some folks already in a good location can't fathom 1500 miles to a bug out. I have to constantly fight against this myself, sometimes with less success.

I have recently learned of a night sight that is even more super-awesome than a Gen3+ (AN/PVS-xx) light intensifier or a FLIR sight with 1200x1600 bolometer pixels (not needing helium cooling!) that runs on 2xAA's: a sight that is BOTH and blends the image of both technologies so that you can see a baby squirrel poke a paw out of a hole from 600M with 30 frames per second and no noticeable delay. Of course, this sight has the finest optical glass and costs more than the best examples of either core technology combined.

I think that tritium-lit M-16 iron sights for $100 is the sweet spot for dark shooting.

less than $300 harbor freight, can haul over a 1000lbs.
small enough to pull with almost anything, some even small enough to pull with a motorcycle.
strong enough to haul all your ammo and save the space in your car for your flir and ar. what's not to like!

    1. A great idea. Are there reviews on it reliability? I know some Freight stuff is crap, others great. You wouldn't want your essentials flying down the road as the trail falls apart.

      Delete
    2. A trailer IS a great idea, but a used camping trailer is the best deal. I would look for a chassis that has 2 axles and 15" wheels. Gut the horrible internals to save weight. Seal the roof but don't fix anything that is merely cosmetic. The 15" wheels will allow you to use light truck tires instead of expensive trailer tires. Pay attention to actual loaded weight and all of the maximum capacities.

Another interesting trailer group are the Apache pop-up trailers. They have independent suspension and pull better than solid axle models. Some have decent capacity, like my Apache Mesa (7'-6" wide, ~11' long box) that can carry 1500 pounds, with the top down, looking like a tent trailer. In Oregon, a trailer with weight less than about 2000# and one axle, lacking "permanent cooking and sleeping facilities" is an auto accessory not needing a plate/inspection/registration/insurance to go over the road behind your legal tow vehicle. "Not an RV, Officer. It's a utility trailer".

    3. Even gutted, wouldn't this still weight too much as far as fuel economy and safe high speed travel?

      Delete
    4. Compared to a full-height travel trailer, a pop-up model with the top down has much less wind resistance. Even fully loaded, weight is under 3500 pounds (Subaru v-6 pullable) that any v-8 SUV/truck will have no problem with. Hybrids can't pull_ ha ha!

All speeds above 30mph are high speeds.

  4. The oil and gold booms will be 'recreated' The ND one is in the beginning of its re-inflation now. This makes for a job market in the surrounding areas as well as the center of the boom. Getting a job in these surrounding areas becomes easier for a little while (until the reinflation fizzles out again in spite of all the banks and investors can do).
You don't want to be in the middle of the boom area - costs of even totally worthless shelter becomes exorbitant, but just outside that area maybe an hour to three drive away jobs will be going wanting, and markets wont be so overinflated. Thats where you should consider a middle path of junk land within transport distance of your (temporary) employment and provisioning.

    2. As long as their are fools out there willing to throw money at it, the declining yields of individual wells will be lost from the overall *predicted* increasing yield of the field as a whole. Eventually too many wells will be producing more saltwater than oil too be ignored even by the willfully ignorant but that point hasn't been reached yet.

  5. Divorce worked for us here in Kalifornia. When I was laid off in 2009 we started saving cash and filed of bankruptcy. I had no Medical insurance but expensive medicines. We filed for divorce so I would be covered by welfare medical (medi-cal). Even with the shitty doctors, I was able to get my prescriptions covered 100%. Later I paid cash for a good doc and had him write the scripts which were covered by medi-cal. I would strongly recommend couples do this. It saves you big money if you are working poor.

  6. Basically it's a very long road trip without refueling, very Long Range Desert Group.

So I guess a lot of space would be dedicated to fuel, then some spare tires (SPARE TIRES) (<-- remember !), then we must have lots of water, some food and then possibilities to sleep while the other is driving, and a handgun each. That would be it.

Some might want to suggest a weapon to reach out, like paratrooper/folding stock M1 or mini-14 (my choice would be a pistol-round carbine or lever action), but I fail to see a scenario where this would come into play without endangering the whole adventure.

It may be good for staying alive after the Bugout failed, though.

    1. I want to like the Mini-14, based on the M1 action, but Rugar was a bit of a Hilary's Momma's Boy and you can't get a bayonet lug even though there is no pistol grip. With a lug, I might see the extra cost being worth it. Aren't AR's coming with lugs now? Not that you want to use it, the rifle would bend or break, just saying that leaves the Mini with few benefits over the AR.

    2. Yes but you can fold the butt :)

I don’t know. While I don’t have the Mini-14, I have owned several Ruger’s, and they are a quality built firearm. If I had to take a bet on which gun would be less likely to jam when you most needed it not to, it would be the Mini-14.

    4. Aren't the M1's about twice the price of the Mini's? I agree the AR jams more often, but it is far more accurate, in theory needing less ammo, and lots of spare parts available. Doesn't the Mini need to go back to the factory for some issues? The AR you should just be able to swap out, parts everywhere. Could be off a bit, going by hazy memory.

      Delete
    5. Oh, that could be Jim. I made a lot of assumptions in that last post, so disregard. The M1’s were reasonable at one time, but I’m thinking back many years. I wasn’t aware of any issues with the mini’s, but if that’s the case, I suppose it’s a wash between the two systems.

Yes but if we're talking about a vehicle weapon, something akin to a tanker's weapon, you would have to stash it within handreach and exit easily with it. For these purposes a folding stock is preferable.

I also envision this as an "abandon ship" option, when your bugout vehicle cannot be used anymore (ambush, gridlock, mechanical failure etc.) and you have to walk the rest of the way, only 1499 miles to go :) :)

    8. Bayonet lug is perfectly useful on a fixed-stock full-length A2 or A3 clone. Go nuts and get a precision heavy barrel for the best of both: 1. slow accurate fire, and 2. sturdy 20" barrel for blade mounting. Practice 1st round cold-barrel hits well-beyond 300M (effective range of AK/SKS carbine)so you don't need to mount the blade. Start carrying it everywhere for increased strength, 'cause this bitch weighs almost as much as an FAL.

Before you pick your located to bug out to, make sure to check to see what is upwind of your area. You may find out why that land was priced so reasonably.
