free to move about the country 2

FREE TO MOVE ABOUT THE COUNTRY 2
You could look at the Black Death Corona Virus as the worse economic collapse, ever in the history of American Empire. Even if the Orange Man Bucks keep people in their rented apartments ( you do understand that The New NEW Unemployment Bonus Checks has dingus all to do with Free Crap Army Welfare, and everything to do with bailing out the bankers with their rental property, yes? ), eventually critical crap breaks while we are all on vacation.
*
I haven't heard anyone talking about the ports being opened for China parts, have you? Wait long enough, and machines stop working. Where do the giant transformers come from, after hurricane damage? Hell, where do my underwear come from, as China had 90+% of that market share. Same with Vitamin C. Nothing that I panicked about three months ago has changed, to the best of my knowledge. Crap has not even begun to get real yet. And yes, I completely understand that I have very little information to go on. But I DO have enough to know Business As Usual is not very probable.
*
But, putting all that aside, this is also a once in a lifetime opportunity to use Beer Virus as an excuse to get the heck out of Dodge, leave the Rat Race, get your little piece of paradise. Before, when I rented, I was trapped. I couldn't NOT work. I couldn't just quit without major planning and effort. And, importantly to our discussion here, if Corona Chan had happened, I would have had zero options except hope I wasn't kicked out during unemployment. But once I owned land outright? My stress level went down so far so fast, it was a unique experience.
*
I've kissed parents asses, I've kissed spouses asses, I've kissed employers asses, all because I didn't have a paid for home. Not only was it degrading and emasculating, it was embarrassing. And all so unnecessary. Junk Land is the greatest invention since sliced white bread, and it can be accredited to the Internet and peoples greed, sloth and avoidance of lack of luxuries. Because Yuppie Scum Marshmallow People would rather pay a bribe to the town starting at $100 a month, just for the privileged of being near grid power and water, not including hook up fees and usage, any land beyond the grid is superficially low in price.
*
FOR NOW. Let me repeat that for those jocks hit too hard during football, or the blond princesses who make a living on their backs and get concussions from the headboard. You have a very limited amount of time-possibly just weeks ( because, you never can time the collapse )-in which to buy your junk land. Soon enough, there will NOT be any more available at today's prices. Now, if you're the sort to buy cases of ammo just weeks before the election, nothing I say can convince you that you must buy junk land now. Because prices AND fraud will skyrocket, later.
*
If you have two firing neurons, you get it. If the economy recovers, and it will not in my opinion but COULD, because What Wonders These Red Shield Fiends Yield, you have not wasted your money. It is still insurance, for the next Oil Induced Crash ( because, duh, it has to run out sometime, even though these crashes are because GROWTH of oil stopped, which happens much quicker than actual depletion ). If the economy doesn't recover, you got the last of the good prepper items.
*
BUT. This is not just a prepper item. This is a Freedom Item. If the economy never crashes, you still gain freedom from not having to pay rent ( just don't be a dumbass and build where the property taxes screw you ). You must kiss a LOT less ass. You can feel wholesome again, not some little worm prison bitch with fecal stained teeth ( wanna bet they don't have ATM's in prison? ). You may not even realize what a scumbag you are, until the codependent behavior ceases. To be clear, I wasn't able to prep like a big dog because I had more money. I was able to do so because I didn't have rent.
*
I was able to quit my piece of crap job and become self employed because I didn't have rent or a car ( the stress is there, because a paycheck is no longer guaranteed, but ANY job has stress, even the best jobs in the world ). It wasn't because I was living frugally. It was because I went BEYOND frugal. Not The Cheapest car, but No Car. Not just Really Cheap Rent but No Rent. $40 a year property taxes isn't really rent, now is it? Only technically. I'll gladly pay that. Now, granted, I live in town at the NOL's place. But I don't HAVE to. Just like you don't NEED that second job, so it doesn't stress you.
*
Geez, remember that, back in the 90's? Second jobs went begging and low consumer prices. We never went back to Business As Usual then, did we? All downhill. So long, and thanks for all the Siberian Oil. But Orange Man said we'll get a recovery, right? Business As Usual is just a pen stroke away, except meanie Democrats! Sweet Sauerkraut Sucking Baby Jesus! People still believe that horsecrap. Amazing. Don't be a moron all your life, get a rent free place to live. The last time we had 25% unemployment, it took drafting everyone into the Army, twelve years later, to finally recover.
*
Now, we have DOUBLE that, and no way of fighting a real war. And you think the economy is going to bounce back? You REALLY Honest Injun think you'll be employed, to pay that rent? Christ, at least compromise. Put $100 down and make payments, staying where you are ( and saving money, in case you must pay off the land and move there ). At least you are locking in the land. Because if things don't improve, there are NO jobs for you, anywhere. Why wouldn't you plan on moving out to your land? There are no jobs there, in that small town fifteen miles away, nor in the 60k population town you live in now. But the difference is you don't pay rent THERE.
*
I'm not telling you to burn your bridges. I'm telling you to buy unemployment insurance. Not the fake kind the broke thieving state stole from you, the REAL kind, where you can eliminate rent and auto costs and live on nearly no money. If you must. It might SEEM impulsive to dump all your savings into junk land and move. Or, is it the first smart thing you've done for some time? Only you can decide, but do you REALLY want all that storage food and ammo in a rented building? If no jobs are available? Are you following the Fracking Oil fields shutting down production? WHAT energy is going to be used to restart our wonderful economy?
*
No, Fracking Fanboy, we have NOT run out of oil. But we are pumping now, BEFORE the economy really collapses, 30% less ( that figure is a month or two old. I'd call it higher now ). That is 30% LESS economic activity, because oil IS economic activity. And a lot of those wells cost too much to reactivate. If production is trending down, why pay that cost? Unless it becomes an outright government grant. Which COULD happen. So could nationalization, but the government has the anti-Midas touch, doesn't it?
*
Trust me, someone who researched and bought a lot of land. Without worrying about a job nearby, you have a LOT more options of what land to buy. East Texas, anyone, with daily fishing and no winter? Granted, mosquito's and malaria, but if you can't handle the cold, there you go. A lot of the old oil patch there has no jobs, but because of that, lower land prices. And outside city limits, no zoning. So you can buy a junk RV and park it there and have a new home. I'd already be there, but millions of angry OtherColors nearby in Dallas, Fort Worth.
*
Nevada has a HUGE middle where no one lives and some counties only have three or five thousand people. And they ain't small counties. They just don't have any jobs. If I didn't have the NOL, I'd have already bought more land there and moved. Just note, be careful of the western part-very little rainfall, compared to the east part of the state. Most of their towns are one gas station, one restaurant stops for the sparse tourists driving through. But my point is, I had to forego all of those locations, because they had no jobs. Now it doesn't matter. Think hard, but act quick

  1. If Amazon sold ammunition, your commission check would have been much higher. I will do my best to help ya out this coming month too. It is kinda nice not having to spend my check on rent or utilities. Junk land rules!!!

    1. Kinda nice. Yeah, it is Friggin Glorious! Feel free to make fun of the rental minions. Hell, if I got commission on ammo I'd be living on the mountaintop concrete bunker next to Rawles.

  2. Right. Research into the zoning and local .gov characteristics. Example is that one nevada county may be no zoning, deplorable friendly. The next county over will have zoning and a progressive bent to the governance. There may be enough yuppies living there either organic holi poli locals or transplants from elsewhere, that clamour for gentrified zoning requirements and always play defensive to "muh property values". They lard up county commissions or town boards to agendize for more rules, taxes, and exhibit karen behaviors against any other lower caste residents. A minion's pros and cons strategy research paperwork should be at least a couple of pages of data points in each column for or against a target area. It is not investment or financial gain motives, it is viability and survivability issues to ponder deeply as well. Stay frosty on the move.

  3. I thought we would see more shortages now of products that come from China. Does anyone know why we don't have more shortages?

    1. My only guess is that prices went up to conserve existing inventory ( which was higher after the 2018 [ 19? ]tax shelter program ) and that with people saving money rather than spending, because the Recovery Is Just Around The Corner and they don't realize the Consumption Paradigm is over. That said, I don't REALLY know for sure and am just as confused/amazed.

    2. Because China did a real quarantine for 12 weeks, virtually eliminated the Corona virus, and now have re-started production and shipping. Advantage of living in a totalitarian state that embraces capitalism. There was enough inventory to avoid total chaos, plus they just took orders on backorder. They are working to fulfill these with fairly good success so far.

    3. Okay, so China resumed manufacture. But is it coming HERE? The US was only 20% of trade, and if we are continuing the trade war with them, are they even sending goods here? Or, is it going to a years worth of empty promises that "the slow boats from China are shipping AAAANNNNY day now"?

  5. Dateline -- Eugene, Oregon

    Sunday 4pm, Wal*Mart
As I entered, I watched forklifts emplacing pallets of potting soil in front of the doors WHILE SHOPPERS AND STAFF WERE INSIDE.
I grabbed a fresh flea collar for my Heeler as the PA announced they will close at 4:15pm... and anybody not in line at the registers will evacuate without their cartful.
As I passed Black© 'shoppers' pushing empty carts, their glares of hatred were almost physical.
After clearing the cashier, I passed a dozen or so Caucasian staff guarding the exit against folks attempting to by-pass the blocked entry.
    The Caucasian folks were terrorfied.

I was shopping for a friend after her surgery, so my rushed run through Wal*Mart was unproductive.
I phoned GroceryOutlet, and the owner said they would close at 5pm.
The drive between Wal*Mart and GroceryOutlet is on Eugene's Beltline Parkway.
The old normal speed limit is 55, but this is hippie-ville, so most folks putter along at 52.
Sunday afternoon, the new normal speed-limit was 75, with some folks passing us on the shoulder at >80.

    Guards:
Wal*Mart had armed security patrolling the aisles in pairs.
Other armed guards parked at the parking-lot entrance with their gumballs flashing to block entry.

GroceryOutlet had two security vehicles parked at their entrance to funnel shoppers past armed guards.

And Oregon governess Kate 'Moonbeam' Brown still orders the forests closed to camping.

    *****

After rioters close/destroy the stores -- and Caucasian folks are too terrorfied to shop --what good is receiving shipping from the chinese?
Noplace to sell it, nobody able to buy it.

Fortunately, enforcing their 'non-intervention policy', Eugene LawEnforcementOfficials linked arms to prevent rioters from messing with their vehicles.
No uniform wants to walk to the station through enemy territory at night.

    I am vastly amused.

    1. Holy Friggin Crap Snacks, Batman! Of all medium big places, I thought your burg would be less dangerous. They are so mellow. I don't know the OtherColor population however. I only saw a sea of pale, even on campus, when I visited in 1986.

    2. Thanks for the on-the-ground-reporting, Marge. I'm contemplating a move to the Oregon coast in a couple of years and am interested in what's happening over there.

  6. Lord Bison, a question if I may... I've been looking at "junk land" for some time now, more recently actually shopping as opposed to just looking, but here is my question: If all other specifics are equal (distance to town and/or water, same basic region, weather, neighbors, etc.) and the decision comes down to 1 acre that you can pay cash for, OR 2.5 acres that could take 12-18 months to pay off, what would you do?

My lizard brain says just grab the acre. My thinky-brain says 1 acre is NOT sufficient for a Hermitage. I recognize that all I'm trying to do is have a legal squat, a glorified, private campground. BUT, when things go sideways and I find Im stuck out there and really need to make a go if it, room for food production and privacy will be MUCH more valuable.

Or, as per usual, am I really just overthinking the whole thing...

You've discussed your land and B-Pod many a time, but I never really got a sense of just how much land is yours. Knowing your past issues with neighbors and theft, I'm inclined toward a larger plot, but having lost my ass financially a couple times (first in the 2001.com bust) I know how FAST you can get to having nothing... UNpaid land is as much a risk as rent.

Just looking for your "been there, done that" wisdom.

    1. If I recall correctly, my acre lot is 150 feet by 300. Really, is doubling that a HUGE difference? Me, I would say NO. Also, me? There is a huge difference in owning and owing, even when owing is just a few hundred bucks. I'm a "one bird in hand is much better than two in the bush" kind of guy. Happy with less if it means less worry. I think you probably feel the same way ( if you'll pardon the presumption ). Go with he immediate free and clear. At this point in time, everyone should ONLY listen to the Lizard Brain.

    2. jl, maybe you can buy more land later next to your paid off land. I'm glad you're buying junk land. Bison is right.

  7. I had a feeling that would be your take. I too loathe debt. A bird in the hand is the way to go in damn near everything. If by some miracle things shake out and we survive this mess, I could always try again, further away and more suitable for growing.

    1. The money I spent on land I'll never use doesn't cause me any lost sleep. But I sure lost plenty when I didn't have any at all. I don't think any of us will be pissed if we get a reprieve, regardless of the bill. But we both know that is probably not going to happen. Miracle, indeed

  8. Not sure how many city folk will drift rural? I tend to think not so many. All they know is the city.

    1. I think more people would if they knew how they would make a living. Some say internet business but service out there is mighty expensive. Making the land pay off your living expenses is a job in itself. Sure you can raise livestock, but in times of drought, hay bales cost $8 a piece. Figure a bale per three adult cows, a month is $240 more or less. In a more temperate climate where steady rain falls, animal feed is less.

Finding an older couple willing to teach 'city folk' who would later purchase the land would be a great way to go Green Acres. Trouble is, those older couples are getting scarce too.

    2. I just don't see the issue if you cannot find a job in the city. Why is not finding one in the country so much worse? We need to reevaluate "regular paychecks".

  9. John,
Junk land may be had in rural, but actual livable houses?
Way way overpriced. I agree that not many will make that
choice. One factor: Relatives. I am talking rural

  10. A lot of folks are not paying rent because rent is suspended, but guess what, they will still owe it. And with less jobs I expect more homelessness. And depressed real estate. Think Detroit.

Underwear! yes buy a bunch, socks, briefs, t-shirts. I have some put back but will put up more. Shoes, jeans and more shirts, cold weather items. I keep the items I have out grown in case circumstances cause me to lose weight.

Definitely a cheap place to call home. land and a plan for a cheap shelter and some basic amenities.
