401 mKay part 3

401 mKay part 3
Way back in part one, prior to babbling incoherently, I mentioned that you should choose to cash out your 401K based on one criteria. What was your Lizard Brain telling you? You may think this is simply a cop-out on my part, trying to not answer your question. But as high as those stakes seem, you had better start listening to that bastard, and feeling confident about it, because you WILL be betting your life on that soon enough. The Lizard Brain, for you newer readers ( and God alone knows how I attracted and retained them, with my track record of offending and repulsing so many ), is your primitive warning system.
*
Lizard Brain is the part of the brain we mostly shut off in order to survive and prosper as a group. LB does NOT care for group dynamics. He is selfish and not very smart. But he knows danger, exactly because he DOESN'T trust anyone else. LB, which you know as “gut feeling” or if you are a bespectacled nerd boy, “spidey-sense”, subconsciously gathers information and notifies you of danger you hadn't noticed. After being screwed over enough times, I learned that I was NOT as smart as I thought I was, and I started learning to listen to my gut. It has served me well.
*
If Lizard Brain is telling you ( NOT your rational decision making based on above board intelligence gathering part of your brain-which is REALLY tainted by the need for group thinking ) to hold on to savings to weather the tough times ahead, listen to him. If he is telling you to liquidate and go long on survival assets, listen! He can always change his mind, so listen within reason. You know, hedge all bets. LB is always right, even if the exact fear didn't materialize. His job is to sense danger, not actually see the future.
*
Now, your rational/analytic portion of your brain, he can help with refining the danger warning signal. That is why we incessantly babble on about minutia here. To help fine tune the fear response. I think that is where there is a lot of confusion in the doomer community. We allow others personal lizard brain to short cut to our own, almost a herd startling event. George panics and his rantings, usually dismissed as Fear Porn Posturings, get you all excited and you also panic. And on this, I really have to give my minions True Love. You all completely ignore my ravings, focusing on solutions only.
*
This is as it should be. Don't ignore your own lizard brain and listen to someone else's. That is just silly. That is what we do when we are young, not having realized we have a lizard brain, only focused on being adopted into a group ( which is why younguns make great military cannon fodder ). This is why popular fad survivalist movements look so silly ( Tri-States philosophy, another philosophy based out of Idaho ). They are group herds panicking on the signal of the guru.
*
As I said, no matter what you do, you are going to lose. The point is not guaranteed security here, but personal peace of mind to the extent you can manage it. Isn't that what ALL preparations are? If you keep your cash, the invading barbarians ( which in Rome were actually invited in, first, just like now here ) cannot seize it. But your leaders can and will. But switching to assets, the hordes can steal what you protected from the bankers. You could end up just stockpiling for someone else.
*
Tangible Assets are not only not liquid, they are easily liquidated by force. Paper wealth, now that it is all digital, is easily spendable, and just as easily “disappeared”. Hell, it might even already be, and you'll only know when you attempt to spend it. NOT buying tangibles, you could starve while cash rich. NOT keeping your wealth in the banking system means you can be ejected from the modern living arrangement. I would say that is the exact reason the police were allowed asset forfeiture.
*
The well publicized injustices actual serve the elites, as it is a cautionary tale to the masses to avoid cash under the mattress. You are cautioned against ignoring your credit score. In other words, trust us with your money, or our security forces will remove your wealth by force. Still think those lovable LEO's who asset forfeiture or Red Flag you will be on your side come the civil war? They love to TALK about observing the Bill Of Rights, but they don't PRACTICE that. They practice taking the kings shilling. Every two weeks.
*
Let's switch focus back to assets. Not the regular ammo and wheat. The amounts and types of assets equal to a 401k. The three traditional types of wealth preservation by rich bitches has been, for many centuries, three things. Gold, land and painting. Gold because, duh. Land because food ( and income ). And painting probably because you need something liquid you don't have to dig up. These items transferred wealth down through the ages for continuation of wealth in families, weathering war and famine and technological revolutions. Now, we can automatically discount paintings. That is for the very rich.
*
And when poor people try to duplicate that, such as with classic cars or collectible comics or trading cards, the market is far too volatile. The Little People shouldn't dabble in Rich People Problems. But land, and gold, is easily duplicated. By a mortgage and silver. Everyone tells you, real estate. Can't go wrong. Can't lose-they aren't making any more of it. You mean, like in Detroit? Yes, currently, rentals are going gangbusters. Until the unemployment rate hits falling wages and exploding demand and you have Too Expensive To Rent mortgaged assets. Real estate is best left to Rich Bitches also, unless it is junk land to eliminate rent.
*
Silver is a can't miss investment. Except one thing. It is AN INVESTMENT. It isn't savings. It might not be liquid when you need it to be. An investment is where you park savings long term. Yield is only important if you are fighting inflation. Savings are there for rainy days. All Rich Bitch investments are for parking wealth, multi-generational. The paintings are probably more collateral for loans to escape a tight spot. Among other rich bitches. It is probably more of a gentleman's club arrangement. Don't try to emulate the rich. Exclusivity is built in to the arrangement.
*
A 401k is savings, to an extent. The penalty for withdrawal is just a stop on instant gratification. Is it an investment? I very much doubt it. In the end, inflation always wins. The bank stealing your 401k isn't even the issue. That is a problem with the system failing. Once they yank your 401k, you have much bigger problems than no savings. Like, riots in the street and famine. If you have assets rather than a 401k, THEN your problems begin, as they are targeted.
*
So, a 401k keeps your life normal until the system crashes, then your wheat and ammo stockpile keeps you, in theory, alive and in better shape than everyone else. There is another great thing about frugal preps. You don't NEED to cash out your savings to afford that. You can have your cake and eat it too. And remember, there is no right answer for everyone, just you.

  1. Politically correct pension funds will not invest in American gun/ammo businesses but will fund China's military hegemony.

The only problem I have with LB is that it favors youth. When you are already in your sixties you say to yourself, "I'm going to take up extreme camping at my age....Hmmmmm....I wonder if it wouldn't be easier if my kids just stuck me in a room and fed me." LOL. I feel great, but I ain't getting any younger. Frugal prepping is still very appealing. If I could only get past stage 1: Where?

    1. Why don't you go where you would enjoy living the most ( which meet safety standards, obviously ). Some old humpers can't stand the thought of another winter. Pick a nice clime. I hate heat more than cold, so the pick of desert was obvious. Must have trees? Love the ocean? Love mountains? You won't find a perfect spot. Pick one you'll enjoy the last years of your life. Haven't you earned it? If you focus exclusively from a prepper point of view, you will be miserable. I picked Florida because of Y2K, and while I don't hate it I certainly didn't enjoy the bugs and minority hostility. Only my kids being there made it manageable. Pick your preference first, then narrow it down by prepping.

    2. Yes. You can make any locale that has at least basic amenable traits for you hermitage requirements a swell bastion. Just dig in military hardcore like in many various regards in your "A.O." own it, so to speak.

  2. Tangible assets are important, but intangibles will be what pulls your chestnuts out of the fire. I am right there with you on a hermitage but maintain a presence in the community I live in by simple community acts of service. Get known as a good guy and the chances of torches and pitchforks gathering at your door goes down.

For example, today a woman ran out of gas. I pushed her vehicle out of the road and then walked down to the gas station I was going to anyway, bought a gallon of gas and brought it back. By then there were several people stopped to help including a LEO. Price of being a good guy? 2.50. Getting known as a good guy by LEO and other potential customers? Priceless. Something to keep in mind.

    1. Oh, I agree with you. Just know that once you are the last meal ticket, that woman will-reluctantly, granted-screw you over. I'm sure you are aware, and don't let it sour you, and that is a good way to live. I just don't want anyone else getting the wrong idea.

    2. Trust me, I keep a screw on the wall to remind me of human behavior. It doesn't hurt to foster a lil good will though

  3. re:
    linked story

Apparently, the duly-elected sheriff of los Angeles county, a mister Reynaldo Hernandez, claims latinos and latinas joining gangs:
    "...is a cultural norm..."

    A cultural norm.

    We don't have enough ammunition.
    We don't have enough walls.
    We don't have enough distance.
We don't have enough breeding women with the instincts of a Great White Shark or Polar Bear with zero fear of their prey.
Oh, and we don't have enough training.

On the other hand, I'm sure we'll make a nice stew.
Apparently, Aztecs and Mayans have considerable experience in certain 'over-looked' culinary arts...

    2. LM, the "cultural norm" comment was made by Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who had the election given to him in typical Dem fashion--with found boxes of ballots. Type in the name and title of the above person in You Tube. Make sure there are no loaded weapons nearby as you watch.

    3. Wow, hadn't heard that one. As much as Aesop might disagree, LA seems like foreign territory. I imagine when they start enforcing their border I won't be able to just walk in . . .

    4. LA was a scary craphole back when the rest of Cali was okay ( not great, but at least livable ). I can't imagine the shape it is in now after the rest of the country fell so hard.

Man, you're good. It seems that the "WeWork" scam may be the trigger that blows this up (on the commercial real estate side, at least): https://www.zerohedge.com/economics/here-are-billions-loans-exposed-potential-wework-bankruptcy (From the article: "...a WeWork insolvency would send the Commercial Real Estate market in New York, London, and most major metropolises into a tailspin."

  5. Well said. I just wonder who is going to fight to get my collection of VHS tapes?

    1. Everyone, once Netflix and Amazon go out of business. Physical copy will be king ( books, also ). Don't tell me you actually got rid of all your VHS tapes and are just trying to be funny...better get your ass down to the thrift store and buy out their three copies of Cinderella On Ice.
