note: as per yesterday's note, I didn't realize the PayPal account was still active until a pleasant minion donated through them.  They had threatened to close my account if I didn't Browser upgrade, and then I went past the deadline, so I have no idea what was up with that.  I wasn't going to start donations through them again, but then I have to be completely honest.  My pride isn't sufficient to turn down the extra amount I get by having that donation venue open.  I do apologize to the minions who went through the trouble of snail mail donating when I stopped PayPal.  I understand it was a PITA.  I appreciate the understanding.  So, really too long story short, if you wish to donate once again, PayPal is available and listed in the info dump posted at the end of each article. www.paypal.me/jimd303

For the longest time, the only answer you got as to how to survive the apocalypse was, “tribe up”.  This is still the de facto response.  Of course, there are a lot of de facto responses that blow elongated mule member.  “Semi-auto only”, “Concrete bunker atop the mountain”, “Need 20 acres and a mule”, and of course my favorite “if you don’t have a FLIR scope you cannot own the night, command your battle space, realize any force multiplication or impress your buddies in the bar”.
*
I’m not sure how many of you have noticed, but I am overly analytical.  I dissect every issue down to a molecular level, then won’t shut up about it until I pummel all opposition to my new point away.  And you wonder how I’m able to write every day for years and decades.  First, I take pretty much any and every survivalist and prepper trope and I take immature childish glee in proving it wrong.  Not only to make myself look smarter but to delight in the simple act of playing the gadfly.  Then, I dissect that position into as many facets as I am able.  Then, as a cherry atop my newly constructed heap of irritation, I look at making myself wrong.
*
That is where we are at today.  For the longest time I have questioned the logic of needing a tribe ( to be clear, yes, you need a tribe.  My point was that there is nobody worthy of joining, being weak and pathetic puny earthlings.  Far better to hole up solo, THEN join a tribe ).  Now, as if that wasn’t enough dissent and disagreement, I’m starting to wonder about the many disadvantages of my solo stance.  To get straight to the point, as advantageous as going temporarily solo is, might you be screwing yourself?  What if you CAN’T join a tribe afterwards?
*
Historically, tribes don’t let just anyone join them.  Just like the chimps, the warrior males tend to be blood related ( cousins, uncle, nephews, etc. ).  This adds familial loyalty to tribal loyalty.  Not to mention, everyone growing up is trained at a very early age at warrior skills.  Peer pressure conformity, allowed violence to both practice fighting and pain toleration.  Sports for conditioning, hunting for stealth practice.  And etcetera.  The females are where the tribe keeps the bloodlines fresh and diverse.
*
Females are programmed to move to a new household and assimilate and bond with new loyalty to a new group ( in cultures where old relationships are needed as a fallback bug-out location, the old ties are not severed ).  Males are programmed to bond with and move loyalty over to those displaying the most competent level of war making ( this is why the old practice of local home units electing their own officers was scraped after the War Of Northern Aggression.  Tribe could now only be the Union, not the state or county.  Better to have incompetent officers rather than disloyal ones ).
*
Females are easy to assimilate into a tribe, because traditionally they place loyalty with their new protector/provider.  And children will only be accepted if under a certain age, where they can still be adequately re-programmed into loyalty.  After a certain age, male children are “ruined” loyalty wise, nor do they have enough time to accept the new culture as normal.  This is why military recruits cannot be too old.  Not JUST because of physical stamina, but because after a certain age, you cannot brainwash them.
*
Which, yes, is a bit harsh.  But ALL of us at all times in all organizations must face a certain amount of brainwashing.  To function in a tribe, or in a family for that matter, or a job, not only must the loyalty be unthinkingly granted, so must acceptance of all cultural dictates.  All these require an emotional acceptance.  Truly, logic holds no place here.  You must bond with blind faith.  You can dissect any cultural practice and deem it counterintuitive to the interests of the individual, and illogical.  That is NOT the point.  The point is that groupthink is group cohesion.  And you can only accept groupthink on an emotional level.  To put it bluntly, you need to be emotionally immature to accept group cohesion.
*
Too old, and too invested in your old culture, you won’t accept the new one.  Again, this is primarily males.  Females have the chameleon ability to change their minds.  This is primarily a function of bonding with any new security provider.  Think about how an old husband suddenly becomes more worthless and weak, as she bonds with a new future husband who is really just like the old one in all things except earning potential.  This is NOT to belittle females.  This is just how they are programmed.  Just as males display a LOT of negative traits as well, this are just how we are programmed.  It isn’t a bad thing, it is just Our Thing.
*
Now, it is true that Pain Is Reprogramming.  Past a certain age ( which seems to be around five ), the only way to reprogram your conditioning is to do so after a traumatic experience.  This is why the fabled Child Soldiers in Africa go though the brutality they do, and why military recruits are subjected to brainwashing techniques such as sleep deprivation, group pressure, harassment and etcetera.  That is why bullying works, despite its ugliness ( but in a village where the children are raised by all of us to be emasculated, we can’t have that! ).  Bullying is just peer pressure to conform to tribal benchmarks and practices.  That is why a bully leaves you alone if you fight back.  Not because he is a coward ( the mythmaking by the FemiNazi’s is breathtaking and must be admired on a certain level ), but because you have shown yourself capable of being a warrior.
*
That is all part of group conformity.  But while you could, mostly, reprogram new tribal arrivals, historically this was not done after a certain age.  If a trend is historical it is because it works optimally.  So, obviously, the best way to get the best warriors is to have them grow up in your tribe.  So, when raiding, you’ll see all males past a certain age killed. Those young enough to be integrated successfully can become captives.  Not to say historical trends will reestablish themselves instantly.  As usual, those tribes following flawed new cultures will die off quickly and leave those accidentally following the correct ones to flourish.
*
So this leaves us with the question of how quickly tribes will start excluding those historically unsuitable to join a already established tribe.  Continued tomorrow.

  1. Going solo is of course my plan to start with. Let the others sort themselves out and see who is still standing in the end.
As long as I was allowed to operate around the fringes of the tribe, I probably wouldn't bother trying to join either. Like you said, I am too old to totally integrate in their ways anyhow.

    1. And why even bother to learn new tricks when the old ones are sufficient? :) The levels of compromise and energy needed to join a new tribe is exhausting even thinking about, but I have to write as if not everyone is ready to die alone and bitter. I mean, hey, where do I sign up? I've been an old man most of my life and enjoy it. But I can see many situations where folks really do need that tribe.

  2. Historically people live in groups of a couple dozen to a couple hundred. I don’t think many survival groups get up to those numbers unless a small town remarkably holds together. But I am guessing you’re focused more on timing. “When will the window of opportunity close?” Perspective

  3. I’d say that as recently as the 1980’s, I would have agreed that a tribal situation would have been a far better strategy, but today I do not think so. Since that time, our civilization has seemed to regress at an exponential rate. We were already starting to see many areas of society at that time, exhibiting the detriments that are common place today, but it wasn’t across the board at that time. The Heartland was still a nice place to live, and hadn’t changed much. But now, with social media, everyone; urban and rural alike, are all connected to the same sick, perverted, Borg network.

On a similar note, if I just took as a sample, my own brother, some of his friends, and perhaps a few family members, I know that I would have far less of a chance with these people than I would have on my own. Everyone for miles around would know our where abouts, as discretion is not part of these folks vocabulary. On the other hand, assuming a densely wooded habitat (with a minimum of a ¼ to ½ acre buffer between residences) I could live next to you for years, and you would never know it, barring trespassing on my land and discovering me firsthand.

    1. Being tribal is a poor choice now. Post-collapse, it might be the only way to survive. A nomad herding group, in marginal land, needs militant tribe members for raiding ( Apache's ). Farmers need organized defense to defeat nearby ag empires who covet your land ( if you must farm, do it up in the mountains, or you have zero defense against invading armies ). Now, granted, this is long term rather than immediate geriatric survivor lifespan. It would apply only to young'uns.

    2. Yes, that’s what I meant; meaning no tribe now, but eventually a return to tribes. But in order for that to happen, all of this PC nonsense must die along with its practitioners. So it will be a generation or two before these negative attributes are weeded out of mankind, and then tribal affiliations will return.

One thing is for certain. This tranny and gay empowerment nonsense (at the expense of the normals) must come to an end, along with, and especially, feminism, which has probably caused more harm to the fabric of society than all the rest combined.

    3. I just don't think it will take a full generation. When you get a 99% die-off, ALL non-survival friendly traits kill you. A very quick Darwin Award selection process. Of course, I could be wrong about the extent of the die-off.

    4. Why everyone feels the need to post on social media about everything they do all day is beyond me. My biggest pet peeve is people refusing to respect your wishes to privacy. I'm not on facebook but thanks to relatives pictures of me are. Even after I told them not to upload them.

  4. If a minion is a loner, introvert, generally poor and isolated socially now, then come collapse, stay solo as much as possible. Other than limited pockets of commerce and trade in post apocalypse scenario, there will not be reasoning enough to expose self to other groups. The having coffee in a public diner and all other trappings of functional society and economy will not be present to justify interactions beyond a gypsy bazaar bargaining transaction. Tribes will mostly need to be ruled by a brutal strongman, or biblical/idealogical fanatic, both of which are dangerous to membership. Get a pet mouse to talk to if you get lonely.

    1. Strongemen and fanatics are hallmarks of today's few remaining tribes, criminals and cults. Those are NOT historically representative, outside the implosion periods. You need normalacy and security to breed, and breeding is long term survival.

  5. Only if and when, there is adequate food (on hand stocked, produced, or traded in reliably) and the security posture is on firm footing would it then be suitable and stable enough to venture into an enjoining a group venture. The group may have a littany list of demands and rules that may be somewhat necessary for order, but may be stifling to the point you must be the rape boy on full moon night parties. Beware accordingly.

  6. How about this: Being functionally self providing and at the same time associated with others of like mind. A loose club of sorts. I'm new here, been here about 12 years so far. Most of the people I know around here have been here all their lives and beyond. My neighbor directly to the north, according to google maps it's about 800 feet from my front door to his, with deep forest between us, is 68 years old, has a 1 acre vegetable garden, hunts, owns hundreds of close by acres and has 3 generations of family behind him. He and I get along well and we help each other sometimes, but we are not friendly. We don't hang out. We go months without communicating. In 12 years I have seen his wife twice, she has worked at my bank for 40 years, we exchange christmas cards each year. We are associates and neighbors but not close friends. We have that sort of relationship with many people around here. Maybe a dozen or up to 20. It's a complete difference to the life we lived in suburbia where no one knows anyone else and the only way to get with friends is to get in the ride and drive for half an hour. We go it alone, my wife and me, but we know there is assistance fairly close by and that's sort of comforting. As we get older stuff like this becomes more important especially since we have no other family members close by. In time, if the tribe assembles closer I expect we will be included but we're prepared to go it alone if necessary.

  7. I have been poor man out for over a decade in this land of FLIR scope yuppie survivalists. I once was involved in some local groups but I brought up too many "pessimistic scenarios" and they didn't want to deal with my "negative energy", my having had a rough start and seen reality on the edge of a major city. Because they were privileged they discounted any of my advice especially if it had anything to do with living frugally. . They didn't know what the word meant and in group meetings they'd spend hours looking through catalogues and taking orders for the latest gadget. Now in hindsight they might actually appreciate some of my advice as the torniquet unwinds and many are seeing their jobs or businesses collapse. They had someone who had a different point of view but they blew it. I rarely see/talk/care to bump into them anywhere as I see how closed minded they are and now I can see a glimpse of pain hiding beneath the painted pony smiling face. Theyre scared of me and what I represent and know things ARE unwinding just like I said it would. They dissed me with their ignorant attitudes , elitist stance and dismissive assumptions. Now they are being tortured by their own stupidity. Somehow their cultist new age religion ain't cutting it no matter how much they chant, do perfect yoga poses or think fairytale positive thoughts . I think they're realizing this ain't no hobby anymore cuz to then that's all it was. I've been living through my own private collapse all these years and somewhat at the helm of it. Now they are feeling their own personal collapse but because they were at the height of society's top rung they have a long way to fall, never mind psychologically, since they were pampered and don't want to hear harsh realities or honest opinions, too scary. So the Little Snowflakes are beginning to melt, one-by-one. Their painted on facades are hard to maneuver when they're crying and shitting underneath the fakeness. They never thought it'd happen like this. Somehow I can't muster an ounce of sympathy. Maybe someday. As they personally combust I want to be as far away as I can.

  8. I suppose that 1:47 PM might be onto something there. Even the best PA movie of all time, The Road Warrior, seemed to allude to there being plenty of this sort of activity going on, so come PA, watch your ass! :D I gleaned the post below from a movie message board, because it’s funny enough to be worth sharing:

“Wez's boyfriend with the boomerang stuck in his head
    by fatdogtavern (67)

The blonde gay guy must have kinda looked forward to death. Imagine having Wez come home each night looking to pound your fanny! Must have been worse on days where Wez had had a bad day to begin with. You're the blonde guy, you've swept up the tent, you've cooked up some nice stuffed rats for dinner because you know thats what he likes. Not knowing of course that The Humungous has been hard on your man all day, stressing him out with menial tasks and YET AGAIN holding him back from attacking the refinery. Its just one sleeper hold after another.

You're the blonde guy and you want to make Wez happy so you've spent all day working your fingers to the bone and you hear the motorcycle coming and your heart jumps! HE'S HOME! The flap of the tent flies open and Wez does not even notice all your hard work. He's is a bad mood. Again. Its going to be a long and painful night. But you're OK with that because you're in love. You know he's gonna treat you harshly. Your friends all told you this was going to happen, but you thought you could change him. He's a good person deep down you said. He's a good person……...”

  9. A sturdy 'puppy cage' may be good equipment to have prestaged for collapse/appocalypse. There is going to be many scenarios requiring usage such as: bonding to master, retraining-programming, storage during idle times, etc, of prospect members. A functional box truck with a heavy chain bolted down along the middle of floor can be prepped for storage, transport to/from market, etc of prospect or banished membership. Not unusual practices currently in much of the world. Plan accordingly.

  10. Since SHTF for me personally four years ago now. I've become much more of a lone wolf by necessity. Still connected with my BOL group in the swamp, but connection to them has become much less over time. Primarily because of physical limitations and fianances. That and my fanatical aversion to letting anyone know where my residence is located. Yes , even my group partners from the swamp do not know where my house is.
Twenty years we've lived in this town and I can count on one hand the people who know exactly where...my wife and I take OPSEC very seriously.
The older I get, the more inclined I too, am likely to go the lone wolf route. Trust issues much LOL ?

Though we're still connected with the swamp group. I've been working on a secondary set of tribe. Primarily composed of those who have been there for me since my personal SHTF.
Sometimes hard times can tell a person whom one can actually depend on at crunch time.
