zombie apoc weapons book 9

ZOMBIE APOC WEAPONS BOOK 9
Chapter Three ( cont. )
Melee Weapon & Blade
I know most of you look at me funny, like I missed a big spot shaving, my rectum is leaking, I have a club foot and the hair is falling out on only one side of my head. Bolt action rifles? Wheat? Bayonets? What in the good lord almighty kind of twisted reality is this fellow living in? You might think I'm contrary just so that I can be different than the teeming maggot on meat masses, and to a very large degree this is true. But I also have very good reasons for everything that I do.
*
Desert junk land? Yeah, because it is cheap, it is in the middle of nowhere, a huge moat of thirsty wasteland keeping the hoards at bay, and because, well, I love the desert as I grew up there, mostly. It might even surprise some of you mutts living in chigger country that there were actually civilizations that thrived in the desert. Wheat, because it is proven to last for centuries in storage. It has so much more dietary variety than white maggot rice, and is half the price.
*
Bolt actions because tactics and strategy is adaptable but logistics cannot disobey the laws of physics. And bayonets? Well, bayonets also have a long history of winning battles, when the ammunition ran out ( granted, it only “ran out” insofar as it was too slow to reload, but that was still the proving ground for the post-apocalypse need to conserve ammunition ). There will come a dark day when no more gunpowder weapons are usable from lack of ammunition ( see my free book Forever Gun ), but a bayonet can postpone that day for quite some time ( as well as the bolt actions ).
*
The British came to be renowned for their bayonet work. It wasn't that bayonets are great against guns, but that when it became time for a bayonet, they were masters with it. A LOT of that came from their reputation. Just as a lot of troops would scatter long before those short stubby little Gurkha's with their chopping knives got within range. Don't mistake the bayonet as a weapon to be used against semi-auto's. The day of the semi will die quickly, as the universal response to any threat is to hose down the area with lead.
*
Sure, it worked against all those evil Nazi dudes with bolt actions ( not really, but the Sacred Semi Myth must be perpetuated along with 'Murica, Only Empire In History To Last Forever, and Without Freeze Dried Foods We Shall Perish Immediately ), and it ONLY took about 30,000 rounds per VC kill ( and that was with inflated body counts, so I'd call it 100k per kill ), so obviously, since we won the Afghanistan War near twenty years ago, spray and pray is the ONLY way to fight a battle. And thank you Baby Jesus, because it means all these idiots are quickly out of ammunition.
*
And when that happens, a bolt action doesn't look so under classed. And when you have a bayonet to go along with that, you are in a position where they are severely short on ammunition and you are not. To a degree, at least until the survivors are done with their On The Job Training, they might break and flee sooner. When your opponents are down to rimfire and shotshells ( after the assault weapons run dry ), they won't wait so long before retreating. I'm trying to get to the point that a bayonet has a physiological component. It is easy to miss a shot. Not so easy to avoid the sharp pointy thing. A lot of people fear blades more than bullets, as far as wounding.
*
And post-apocalypse, bayonets and metal cased ammunition mean that there is the threat from both ( whereas historically a muzzleloader only had to be feared once, then its bayonet. Now, they can be used in combination ). Bayonets work well for as a police weapon ( normal LEO work and with prisoners of war ). Granted, bayonets are a niche weapon. They only have an advantage against other firearms holders at extreme close range. The bayonets were at a disadvantage in the field, but not once they got down into the trenches. Have you ever been attacked by someone twenty feet away? I have. It is amazing how quick they cover that ground.
*
Bayonets will take some time to prove useful after the normal apocalypse. But in a zombie apocalypse? They are a perfect weapon, right away. Because you have BOTH weapons at the very same time. You can instantly use either one, your firearm against humans or your bayonet against zombies. Any other combination of weapons, you must take time to bring one into use. Whatever melee weapon you use, it must be ready to use, immediately. Those carbines in the jungle? You didn't have time to aim, responding to an ambush. You HAD to hose down the general direction with automatic fire.
*
The two wars we fought in the jungle, we were an Industrial powerhouse. We were churning out ammunition by the trainload, per soldier. We had the luxury of wasting ammunition as a tactic. Newsflash there, Sammy Short Bus, we won't be replacing your apocalypse ammunition. You cannot duplicate the tactics of a bygone era. There are even many reports from the Sandbox spear points on the accuracy of our M-16's against the AK's, a combination of a superior design, the treasure to equip those with state of the art optics, and the ability to train the heck out of soldiers. Already, our military ( in one small aspect, in embryonic form-although the general form is still stuck in 2nd Generation warfare-the better to profit the military industrial complex ) is inching back towards accuracy over mass.
*
This is the advantage I have in the desert ( my desert, in the mountains. NOT the low desert, flat and lacking vegetation in many areas ). It isn't MUCH distance. You are still looking at rolling hills everywhere except right at the river valley's. It is just enough distance that ambushes are not so close you need to respond instantly. If you aren't hit, you have time to get cover. I'm generalizing of course. You can be bushwhacked from nothing more than a clump of sagebrush. But it isn't the total vegetation of many areas that mean your attacker is mere feet away. There is more time to deploy your melee weapon.
*
But if your area is not similar, the deployment part can severely hinder you. THAT is why I prefer the bayonet, just another way it is superior to many other melee weapons ( and don't discount the added benefit of the buttstock of a wooden and steel rifle, shortening the redeployment to strike time in close quarters ).

note: I finally deemed it safe to visit RedBox again.  Not that I was chomping at the bit.  It isn't like there are a flood of great movies nowadays.  But I did finally use a "buy one get one free" digital coupon and so took a change watching "Zombieland Double Tap".  You know, I would call that about equal to the first one.  Not too derivative, its own shticks.  Fun,  what movies should be-entertaining.  Stick a minute into the credits, there is a short with Bill Murray.

  1. Right. The bayonet and tactical employment with base manual of arms skill set is an infantry standard. Period. Have it or learn it, it will be on your finals exams.

All of the beard boy operator picatinny mounted force multipliers are for naught in the collapsed dark aged existences to come. There can be hard cover volumes of examples where a bayoneted rifle was handy dandy when in all of those unique and dicey pickles people find themselves in during combat that involves killing other humans, that are also intent on killing you.

Yep, bayonets and beefy blades are group standards in Bisonia, don't friggin show up to spicy without them, lest you be denigrated as a putz by your wolverines chums.

    Stay frosty sharp.

    2. It's not an either/or equation. Take a look at my workshop, or any other competent males workshop. You'll see a plethora of tools. Some get used every day. Some were purchased for a specific task then never used again. Is there a law against having too many tools?

Guns and blades and not only a means of enjoyment but are also tools. They must be used regularly if you want to perform decent work. What good is a mortising chisel or a LAW if you purchase them and never use them? I find it peculiar that some folks around here choose a specific point in time to claim when the best weapons of war were invented and ignore the benefit of all others. Why garb a bayonet when a long pointy hardwood stick will suffice, and be so much cheaper and easier to replace when it breaks?

Thing is, talk is cheap. It's so much easier to go online and talk smack than to crawl off the couch and get out there and get something done. FWIW, I have been attracted to bladed weapons for may years, decades. There are literally boxes of knives, bayonets, swords, spearheads, hatchets, axes, every thing you can think of stacked up on the shelves in my work shop. Look down at the end of the north yard. There is a large cable spool on an elevated mount for throwing knives, hatchets, axes, spears, whatever. I also use it for shooting my crossbow and long bows. And I have used it for shooting my small bore pistols at. Yeah, I'm a weapons freak, and have thousands of them of all kinds all over the place around here. Anyone claiming the most advanced individual weapons in world history are not the best is, well, just plain stupid. There, I said it. Nothing wrong with old skool weapons, as I said, I have many. But when push comes to shove and your best guess is to hide out till the smoke clears, well, all I can say is, 'was knowin' ya'. Constantly improving, til the day I can't no more.

    3. I'll take a 1984 Mac computer over what is offered today. Most Advanced is not always superior. If it is superior, it is only in certain aspects and not others.

    4. A bayonet does the job better than a sharp pointy stick. Proper tools for the job at hand. Do you want a shovel to dig a hole or a rusty tin can?

    5. And, flat head shovel, are a pointy one ( sorry, I know there's a proper name )

  2. Your desert junk land suggestion, is one of your better ideas. There are ways to compensate for the lack of water. But most can’t think outside of the box, and wouldn’t even consider it. Which is a good thing for those of us that have desert junk land. Despite my slight sensitivity to carbohydrates, your feed store wheat suggestion is another good one. The 75 year old heavy bolt action rifle, slightly less so. The absolute perfect gun for you, would be a .357 lever action rifle, and would serve as a companion to the revolver that you already have. No bayonet? No problem. Duct tape a spike nail to the end.

Your spear idea also has some merit. Bayonets? Well, I get the message that you’re trying to get across, as far as the intimidation factor goes. But something tells me that in practice, it’s more of a young man’s game. Try wielding a long knife, that’s attached to the end of an old battle rifle, that weighs about the same as one of Rosie O’Dumbbell’s bowel movements (If you’ve ever seen a rhino take a dump at the zoo, that will provide you with the proper imagery :D ). Warning. It’s not for the feint at heart.

    1. I simply cannot NOT click on the links. I hear you on the weight of the older bolties, but if used in conjunction with ultra light infantry loads, might be a wash. Once you get too old to take to the field, you can do home defense with a lighter weapon. Or, use the same boat anchor, but have a bi/tri-pod set up with carbine loads to lessen recoil.

    2. Sorry-to clarify. First "load" is all gear carried. Second "load" is powder charge

    6. I am reading the book "The Great Famine: Northern Europe in the Early Fourteenth Century".

"The pressures of population growth had encouraged practices that decisively and dangerously decreased crop yield. Intensifying demands for staples led to cerealization, that is, the constriction of pasture in favor of arable, with concommitant loss of manure from the contraction of herds. Thereupon, insufficient manuring of fields reduced yields."

This is one of the fallacies of vegans and vegetarians. Livestock are an integral part of a healthy farm system. Livestock are a necessary part of the farm ecosystem. The anti-meat mania is foolish. If possible, try to add chickens/ducks or herd animals to your survival garden/farm.

      Delete
    7. Not sure why anyone wouldn't add chickens. Once you start a downward spiral, you're just waiting for the opera.

  3. The whole idea is to hide out til the other guy runs out of ammo. Then, come out of the lair and slay everybody with the bolt and bayo. Nice. But has "FAIL" printed in big red letters all over it.

The built in problem with that scheme is that if you are any where near the bad guys they will find you. It is at that very moment when reality over takes fantasy and the giant Grand Canyon in the middle of that failed scheme becomes clear for the first time ever.

While we are not as remote as I wish were were, and we continue to search frantically every single day for available remote property (at least 100 miles from any pop. center over 100,000), you are right in the middle of a place where they will gut you with your own bayonet after they shoot everything in a 100' radius.

I have bolts, levers, pumps, and semi's and I have thousands of rounds of ammo for all of them but when danger comes a calling, as it has twice already, the lifesaver I will grab first is the AR15 because it has been proven to me over and over to do that far better than any other firearm in my arsenal. Lastly, if I am to be killed my body will be found in a huge pile of expended brass rather than stacks of boxes of unfired ammo. Now, it's 3:15pm and the sun is shining so I'm gonna grab that AR sitting over there and go out back and further hone my skills for no one ever knows when they will need them.

Fully Agreed; I have modern,AR & AK, M-1 Garand, Yugo made off the German 98k dies. But as I remind my brother often, I can hold out for awhile, but when the assault starts en masse', I will be done post haste. Hope it doesn't happen, but as of recent, the likelihood of growing older and fading away is seemingly starting to disappear.

    3. If it comes to hiding out until found, I think a loaded shotgun will become far more useful than a bayonet. Especially if there is very limited access to your 'spider hole'. Then again, it becomes far easier to trap you inside so you are done anyway.

What is/are your thought(s) on all the tactical tommies pinching their plump nipples to plate carriers and kevlar helmets come badland/thunderdome time? What Ive noticed is an addiction to "tactics" with complete disregard to strategy. Please though, what would you recommend for Zombie apoc flesh hole reduction?

    3. Well, myself I personally believe mobility is more important. From combat vet written reports though, there are those that value armor and those that didn't.

    1. And arrows were REALLY quick against muzzle loaders. They didn't win the war though. Not that the dead pin cushion cared :)

    2. Arrows are faster, but the bowyer HAS to be closer as well. Even the lowly .22 rimfire has a longer range than an arrow. Not that hard to make more 'quiet' either.

But cobbled out from scratch - the bowyer wins.

  6. James, Any usage of your new sun oven you would care to report on? I'm interested.

I found out no matter how much shit you have, weapons and otherwise, you can only weild so much at once. Having extra people helps, for all the pros and cons discussed here frequently about other people and how much everyone seems to suck as we get older. Hating everyone is easy, figuring out ways to work with and forge alliances takes good character and work. I'm all for overwhelming force against evil. But for true long term viability, building contacts, a reputation for honesty and helping others may well save your life many times over compared to a mountain of ammo.

One often overlooked garden tool is some decent live catch wire box traps. Physical damage to plants and seed beds through digging from raccoons, armadillos, opposums and feral hogs can rival insect losses. And like Demented Guy's insightful comment: Trapping pests the garden attracts is another way it produces meat (in addition to producing fodder for rabbits, chickens and the like).
