turd world peasant food 2

TURD WORLD PEASANT FOOD 2
Every time I bring up wheat, in any capacity, a great silence descends upon the land. Everyone pauses, looks at everyone else, draws in a collective lungful of air and then a huge clamor of voices erupts orgasmically. But Jim, gross. I'm used to fluffy white bread. But Jim, the humanity, I have to buy a grinder? But Jim, they don't sell wheat in my town! To which I answer, quite reasonably if I do say so myself, have you even tried whole wheat? Yes, you need to buy a grinder, just like most people buy a rice cooker.
*
And, what in the hell is wrong with you? You don't have a bookstore in town, either. You still read books. So it costs a bit more ( I'm thinking of used books, specifically ). I will concede, however, that now that all the retarded unprepared preppers now cannot buy freeze dried and so are buying wheat, and at this point there is no more wheat by mail. Find a grocery store that offers those bulk bins selling organic foods. They can probably get you a 25 pound sack of organic wheat kernels. It won't be cheap, like a feed store would.
*
You could always buy whole wheat flour from Wal-Mart. I just prefer the kernels myself, both health wise and for the fact you can sprout them for fresh veggies. But you can mail order other kinds of seeds for sprouts. I'm close to feed stores, so I don't have the issue many of you do. Which does mean, probably, that everything else you buy is cheaper, being in an urban hive. So I have a hard time feeling bad. And, you don't have to immediately start eating whole wheat. Start out just adding a little to white flour. Up the whole wheat percentage over time. You actually come to prefer whole wheat, I'm confident.
*
Now, we talked about potatoes. Who doesn't love potatoes? Especially as a delivery system for fat, be it either gobs of butter on a mashed or baked, or paper soaking vat grease from fries. You eat potatoes one meal, and whole wheat the next, balancing that grease with a whole grain. The third meal, meh, whatever. A white food at this point is harmless. You already have your protein and your fiber, your minerals and vitamins. I chose rice as it is cheap and a filler, plus variety.
*
What about the fat? I said, the best you can afford. I am eating only butter myself. I put it on my breads, and cook with it. Most other oils nuke my gall bladder. If I had to switch to olive oil, it would probably be cheaper. Butter works for me, even at $3 a week. Your veggies are either seed sprouts, or whatever you are growing or can afford. Perhaps you add onions to everything. Those are nice and healthy, but don't neglect dark greens ( celery doesn't count ). Take a vitamin pill to make sure. Animal protein is great. If all you can afford is liquid chicken, you could do a lot worse.
*
So, call it $5 a week, between butter and eggs. I'm going to call it at 500 calories for each of the three foods ( with the fat being an extra several hundred ). Call it thirty potatoes per ten pound bag, each one 100 calories. I don't think you'll be able to eat five small to medium potatoes a day, unless you are doing heavy labor. But, say you do, a ten pound sack is about a weeks worth of potatoes. Usually, about $3. Flour is 400 calories a cup, and that is only two plate size flat breads. One pound of flour lasts a week ( roughly ). Expensive whole wheat flour at Wal-Mart is $3 a five pound bag. It is less, but round it up to $1 a week.
*
It would be 25cents a week if you ground it yourself. Now, rice is a bit more to buy per pound, unless you buy a huge bag. Still, call it a buck a week. All the above is $8 a week. Two thousand calories a day. If you ate the cheaper liquid oil, and no eggs, I'd call it $6 a week. That is only with sprouts, and only salt and pepper for seasoning. If you ate a bit less in potatoes, $5 a week. Now, nobody wants to eat this austere of a diet, but remember what we are talking about here. An extreme low cash expenditure diet, for tough times.
*
If you had a large family, you could shop at the restaurant supply outlet ( although one wonders how many will survive the coming retail food apocalypse ). Their prices are half of Wal-Mart. You just need to buy big packages. But call it a family of four, and you are able to buy wheat at the feed store, plus get the bulk groceries. $3.50 or so a person, per week, with full potato rations, butter and eggs. $14 a week for everyone. And it might even be lower, if the wife and kids cannot eat that many calories. And no, I'm not saying many people would voluntarily spend so little. Kids want fruit and vegetables, plus condiments including sugar.
*
Of course, during a collapsing economy, this might make up 90% of your grocery budget. The things desired might be the items that become luxuries. Think about how oranges used to be a holiday treat item. But then, a backyard vegetable garden and chickens are the easiest things to learn and get going, aren't they? You might end up only buying cooking oil, chicken feed, salt and grain on a regular basis, all else home produced. But the above gets you through the immediate unemployment crises. If you do actually get food stamps, buy more of the same, to stockpile, as they won't last long before the government ceases to function.
*
This isn't a complete list. Some folks will also eat oatmeal, or eat the same food twice a day instead of once. Perhaps you cannot eat rice without soy sauce, or pancakes without syrup. Some people need less calories, others more. What I'm trying to point out is that in an emergency, you can go to the store with almost no money and eat well on that, if you need to. Done right, you need not eat an unhealthy diet, or one that is excessively boring. This might be the way to stockpile a very cheap grocery store six months food storage, before you need to touch your apocalypse food.
*
What if you already had the ingredients on hand, and only had to spend $3 a week on potatoes? That would make a world of difference come unemployment. One less worry. It is just another tool to consider.

note: the son in law, who worked for a well known name brand toilet paper factory last year, states that they were going balls to the wall in production, six months before Beer Bat Bug.  There is no way they can ramp that up.  Conclusion, good luck filling all those bare shelves.
*
note: rumors-just one source, nutnfancy HERE-of gun and especially ammo shortages ( months behind filling emptying shelves ).  Makes sense, as most folks "have no room" and just buy a box if they go to the range, then only have a box or two worth of ammo in ready to deploy mags ( it seems pistol ammo is going to take the bigger hit ).  But now everyone who refused to leave the white boy reservations surrounded by OtherColors is suddenly having visions of Ferguson.  Jesus, people, its like watching two monkey's humping a football
*
note: sweet Baby Jesus on a turd surfboard!  $1.5 TRILLION dollars into the repo market to buy back SOME of the weeks loses?  How long can that possibly go on?  Nothing to see here, it's only the flu, bro.

  1. Rumors.

All year, I eagerly await the Home&Garden show at the fairgrounds in Eugene Oregon.
Saturday morning, I checked their website for seminars and workshops.
'Kitchen remodeling' at 11am, so I drove over.
No cars in the parking lot.
    I drove to the entry.
A sign announced the weekend "...event has been cancelled...".

Now, to an old person, the phrase 'has been' can be so hurtful.
    Ouch.

    1. Nice update on the web site. No one could be bothered to save folks the drive?

    2. More economic damage, for no reason.

    3. The reason was we are over leveraged. Everywhere, everybody. This is just a reset. The Beer Bug is only the excuse.

    4. Well, we might be over leveraged and I’ll really have to look that up and see what that means, but wouldn’t occam‘s razor indicate that it’s a case of Democrats on the rampage to destroy Trump and his voters?

      Delete
    5. But how does that tie in with Italy and China and South Korea closing down the factories? Occam's Razor would say failing civilizations are impacted by plague much more than those on the ascent. This isn't elaborate political maneuverings. It is systems failing from lack of resources. The leveraging was used as energy ( NET ) fell.

  2. Went to the only local gun store in this town here in Kalifornia yesterday. Needed to buy small pistol primers. They were out! The store was packed with people.

    1. Went to SG Ammo this morning and I was shocked. SHOCKED I tells ya! 9mm going for double 223. No Tula or Wolf. Their normal two day wait shipping is TEN days. Humped, meet screwed. Instant ammo shortage and price hike. PSA kits still there, but up 10-30%. I imagine gun sales increase to fit available ammo of NON common calibers, shortly

    2. Yeah go to yuppie elk creek rawles peddler site and get an 1800's era off caliber gun, no paper work. wheèee!

    3. Kiss my puckered bunghole! I hope you were being sarcastic! $1k-$2k most models?

    4. Not 9:15am Jim. But I’m sure that you, as well as most of the other minions are aware of the legal loophole that allows one to purchase pre-1898 cartridge firing guns. The thing is, you probably would have to pay more to get one that is in firing condition, and even then, it’s akin to spending your non-circulated 1898, Morgan silver dollar, during a regular shopping session (i.e. ideally, you wouldn’t really want to do it)

A better option for those with limited options, and that must avoid the paper trail, is a black powder, cap and ball revolver. Spare cylinders are still reasonable at this point in time (About $50) and you would want to have some pre-loaded (Sans percussion cap) and ready for action. Some models allow for the cylinders to be replaced very quickly (The Remington 1858 for example). If you need more range, then get the “Buffalo model” with the 12” barrel. You can even add a shoulder stock to the Remington, and create a short, yet accurate, carbine.

    5. I agree it is a better option. My question is, how are the prices? I imagine that most replicas come from Italy, and with those shut down...Is your research current? Link?

    6. Sure Jim. But first off, I should state that my advice is primarily for those that do not have access to a legal firearm purchase. Now personally, I wouldn’t feel the least bit handicapped with a muzzleloader, but that’s just me.

Here’s a brass framed 1858, for $245. Now ideally, you really want to spend extra, and get an all steel frame. But brass is just fine, as long as you don’t load it too hot.

Yes, Italian. And yes, Dixie still has them in stock, and usually has the best prices.

    1. Your Lizard Brain is telling you this time it is NOT a false alarm, like so many times before. I went through the stages of dealing with this myself a few weeks ago. Accelerated, but there. Denial was short lived, depression lasted longer. Acceptance was grudging. Now I still astounded, but glad at least the stress of waiting is over.

      Delete
    2. I'm not certain the waiting's over. Lot of people saying this is mostly media hype. None the less, we're about as prepped as we can be.

      Delete
    3. Yes, still a waiting period before grape soda riots and grid down, but no more waiting for the plunge over the waterfall. I'm 99.999% sure that has already happened. I won't say 100%, in case I need to salvage my dignity later LOL

  4. The momentum of the stampede creates it own rippling effects into other areas. Vegas being a tourist slut town is laying off hugely and everything interconnected is contracting. I expect a severe recession because even a soon announced all clear siren can't jumpstart this sickly beast. A smiley face is put on by politicians and narrative boosters in media, athletics, entertainers, business heads. The look in peoples eyes and grouping behaviors not seen in generations speaks volumes to the true reality out on the ground. As an aside my Lizard Brain be thinking this virus by characteristics and government responses is biological warfare. By who or why is moot to a lowly Minions situation or area. I have to flush out my helmet individually and get into a corresponding combat mode as such. Frigging toilet paper and grocery adversary combatants. New normal. Stay Frosty.

    1. I expect by this weekend, every higher cost grocery store, ethnic store and gas station convenience store to be stripped of all basic foods. Surprisingly, despite evidence of eating out 50% of the time, folks still remember how to cook at home. And ALL of their cupboards were bare until now. What combat? We all already lost. Best to stay home.

    2. "Best to stay home."
      ===========

      Right there.
A couple years ago a neighbor came by and asked, "Don't you guys ever go any where? Every time I go past here both of your rides are in the drive."

I told him that every time I see him going by I wonder where he's going, and why.

See, we've created a paradise of sorts here and we don't really feel like leaving. Leaving is like stepping into the ghetto and I can't wait to get back here to paradise. Don't get me wrong. We don't live in a mansion nor do we have a lot expensive entertainment devices. We're simple people and we do our chores each day, our livelihoods, we take care of our animals, and we both have extensive hobbies. We leave, infrequently, to purchase supplies for all of those things. In a year we might leave the compound 3 times for entertainment purposes and for never more than a couple hours. Frankly, there's just no place I'd rather be than right here. I find most people overly confusing, complex, uninteresting, and boring. 80% of them could vanish and I'd hardly notice. BTW, is all this fake virus hype over yet?

      Delete
    3. Again, important to recall it isn't about the plague, it is about the system failing economically. Because of Beer Bug, now it is failing logistically. No virus, tomorrow? STILL all the same panic and outages and stock market crashes. Self feeding loop now.

  5. You definitely want the grinder, but one time I cooked up some Kurt Saxon, wheat kernels in a thermos, and truthfully, it wasn’t half bad. Though I’d recommend that you bring it to a boil for a full 5 minutes, before dumping the contents into the thermos.

I’ve seen wheat flour at local markets at a reasonable price, for a fairly hefty sack. This doesn’t help as far as sprouting, but you should also have one of those hermetically sealed survival seed cans, as well as intermediary use seeds.

It times like this, that I do wish that I was at the homestead full time, with annual trips for resupply. In this scenario, you wouldn’t even feel the effects of the empty shelves under such panics, and would be able to brave them without worry. I’d probably just grow turnips, so fresh potatoes/turnips, would be a non-issue. Butter and other perishable dairy might be though. Maybe some powdered milk, and Molly McButter, as well as other spices.

As far as the Coronavirus scare goes, I’m of the opinion that it is 100% political. But it doesn’t matter, because the damage from the fear mongering, is worse than the actual virus at this point (Remember, black Jesus didn’t lift a magical finger, and part a major body of water, until over a 1000 had perished from H1N1. But to his credit, it was mighty Caucasian of him when he finally did so :D )

  6. For more'n 30 years if I eat a bread product it is plain ol' wheat, nuthin fancy. It has much more flavor than white and doesn't stick to the roof of the mouth. Thing is, we hardly ever eat any bread products. A loaf of std Kroger wheat bread lasts til it goes bad and then gets put in the bird suet cages. There;s usually a couple loaves in the freezer, but like I said, we rarely eat it.

Simplify is the word around here. I mentioned the other day about making your own gravy, taco mix, chili mix, etc., out of staples you have stocked deep. You yawn. Then you head to the store and let your wallet get raped for those packets of chemicals that are eating the walls out of your organs.

And why in the hell is everyone eating so much for in the first place? Doesn't anyone have anything productive to do, that they are so bored with life that all they can manage is to stuff their gaping maw 8 times a day?

You powderpuffs aren't going to get very far when performance is required and all you have to offer is sugar laden calories full of non-nutrients, good only for couch wrecking.

Hey, the sun just popped out! The temp is up to 44 degrees. Gotta get down in the woods and do some over due loggin. Burn Baby!

    2. I did look at the bullion cube flavored gravy, but reading ingredients on a bullion cube you know the cube didn't exactly grow on a tree. The cubes are a cheap attempt to duplicate flavors originally supplied by soup stocks or meat drippings.

      Delete
    3. Guess I should have re-mentioned. Make your own cubes. Put an entire chicken in the slow cooker than turn it on high for 12 hours. Cool, then strain. Strain again through a tighter sifter. Then funnel into an ice cube tray cut in half, then into the Presto dryer. Same with beef but cut the beef into pieces first. You can get ice cube trays with smaller cubes at the dollar store. Forgot. When you let it cool the fat will flat to the top. Scoop that stuff off and don't try to dry it.

  7. Saturday Wal*Mart in Eugene Oregon:

I acquired all their .22 ammo.
    Dropped a grand.
    Because.
    Just because.

The clerk told me the firearm purchaser before me (not me) was Number 200 for the day for his Wal*Mart region.
    I worded that weird.
I got all their ammo, not a firearm.
My neighbors acquired at least two-hundred new firearms.
    How many were .22?
    I'm sitting pretty.

I also got another five-gallon bucket toilet-seat and a few hundred more trash bags TO USE WITH ALL MY HOARDED TOILET PAPER FROM Y2K.
Die yuppie preppers, die from itchy crusty vermin-infested rectums!

  8. Yesterday I ordered bulk oatmeal and potato flakes from an online restaurant supply store. Today I got an email that it is no longer available.

I have ordered from an online fruit/nut/grain/etc store for years now. Last week they had a notice that there is a 1-2 day delay on orders. This week it says 2-3 days.

It is getting harder to find online bulk food.
