Nicus, could you kindly contact me regarding your comment on hydroponic nutrients?  I'd like more info on location of purchase, basic how-to books, etc.  I'd like to both pursue an article and do this myself.  Please leave comment or e-mail me at jimd303@reagan.com

note: even while the faint stench of liberalism is apparent, this guy has some wicked good analysis on big picture and energy influence.

note: S.F. I just noticed your PayPal donation ( I never got an e-mail notice, sorry it took a month ) and a hearty thank you.  To the rest of you, PayPal has decided that they are going to suspend "donations" as a payment method.  I have no idea why.  So, from now on, that's it for that.  I appreciate every one of you that's supported me with donations ( or, obviously, any other method ).

I wrote about this around twenty-five years ago, what seems like barely yesterday.  Damn old age, time flies by a year at a time when it used to be an eternity until next payday.  The article, for my wicked cool ‘zine ( an amateur publication back before the Internet )  that was the envy of none, was on stealing from work to finance your preps.  I have no recollection of what the article contained, although I hope it did differentiate between Mom & Pop businesses and those that were corporate run.  To your mind, stealing is wrong no matter the circumstances but over the years I’ve come to think of corporations as evil and I would no more feel bad stealing from them as I would stealing from a thief or a douche bag of other stripes.  A small business owned by a sole proprietor, no, stealing from him isn’t cool.  He actually works for a living.  Now, I know this is going to piss some minions off to no end.  Your whole life your parental units, your nice old lady teacher in grade school, your church-all told you that stealing is a sin and you shouldn’t do it.

*

Wow!  I mean, really!?!?  Your father worked for a defense contractor which got rich off of taxes, which were definitely NOT going to defense but rather offense.  Colonialism is not protecting our borders ( and allow me to further piss you off by calling 9/11 a complete false flag attack, on par with the Gulf Of Tonkin, The Maine, Pearl Harbor and I’m pretty sure a few others I’m forgetting.  But just this morning a certain Yuppie Scum prepper site had a blurb on how it was a shame certain elements in government were acting poorly.  Really???  Only a few?  The whole rotten fascist régime is and has been acting badly for all of last century and a good chunk of the one prior.  Naïve, and overly optimistic, much?  This is the normal attitude most people take, blind acceptance with just a smidge of disappointment, so I no longer have much hope most of you will wake up to the danger ).  And your school teacher.  How was she paid?  By voluntary donation?  You’re going to believe the mouth pieces of the government that enslave you-both as a student and a taxpayer- in order to teach you slavery was wrong in 1861?  Organized religion always, ALWAYS, turns into a for-profit rather than for prophet organization.  These stupid bastards, in between molesting choir boys, are telling you that carbon dating is a scam and there is no such thing as overpopulation.  How credible are they, really?  Okay, I have my issues with scientists running their own scams, but testable hypotheses even with an agenda certainly beats blind faith in the matter of biology/physics ( blind faith for ones soul is a different matter of course ).

*

Now, in a small group setting, stealing is of course wrong.  It is also stupid.  You are cutting off your nose to spite your face.  If you are caught, you lose your membership in that group.  And grouping is fundamental survival 101.  So stealing is self defeating behavior of the worst kind ( so is cheating on the spouse, yet so widespread that there are social safety valves to allow it to some degree-you have to go back to a very small tribal unit to see its complete prohibition ).  But you are no longer part of a small group, or tribe.  You are a citizen in a nation state and that is a completely different animal.  The nation state exists as a large enough military force that your odds of being attacked by outsiders decreased in occurrence, hence making the extra cost of membership ( much higher taxes, enslavement as brute labor and/or cannon fodder in special circumstances, lack of freedom ) tolerable.  You must also pretend that small tribal culture extends to include everyone you call a countryman.  And as long as the nation is running in a surplus, that fiction serves everyone well.  You pretend you give two stinky craps about the moron living several days travel away.  Social lubricant, of a kind.

*

When a nation is in energy decline ( wealth is merely surplus energy-solar, carbon, whatever- in the end ), cultural cohesion takes a beating.  A nation doesn’t disintegrate because we become rude and hateful to one another, we become that way AFTER energy decline.  Divorce and latchkey children wouldn’t be commonplace in an economy in surplus, when one wage earner was all that was needed ( yes, of course you had bored out of their gourd housewives popping pills and pumping the milkman, but that was boredom in a energy surplus so good that everyone had house robots.  Looking back, that would have been a preferable existence to what we do now to get through life ).  Well, we all hate each other, now.  It has been building and fermenting for quite some time.  The optimists, blinded by the rainbows shooting out of their asses, think we can all still live a Leave It To Beaver life, if we just put our minds to it ( dumb asses ).  They think we should still care about each other, especially those not of our tribe.  They also hate everyone else, but don’t realize it yet ( what do you think mammon worshiping is, if it isn’t class warfare? ).  They’ll come around soon enough.

*

Corporations are, to an extent, robot businesses.  Their bureaucracies are mindless circuits running on autopilot.  They don’t have any other binary input except PROFIT.  That is what they do.  That is ALL they do ( is that a Terminator reference?  I was trying for it ).  They don’t try to be evil, but evil is as evil does, yo.  They will crush you in an instant if that action translates into PROFIT.  We all have stories of mindless corporate activity that defied logic or explanation.  Except for the above one.  If said corporation has no issue with screwing you, why aren’t you returning the favor?  Your only input should be CONSEQUENCES.  As long as you don’t get caught, why are you worried?  I’m not talking about grand larceny or embezzlement ( which the corporations can do with near impunity, such are our laws ), but chump change theft.  We continue tomorrow.

  1. We have all at a time or another taken a pen back from the office or something in that ballpark. In history there has been something called in french "Travail en perruque" (it translates into "wig work") https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travail_en_perruque

It's about using the ressources and tools at hand in your job for something not work-related (more often than not it was about doodling and reusing leftovers)

There is one ressource that is never really tapped, and that is that of the skills of your colleagues. You can make good progress in cost controlling at home with the input of accountants, so you won't have to reinvent the wheel every time.

Also in my book "Glasses & Pulleys" ( http://solsysbooks.blogspot.com/ ) the main protagonist uses his job as a way to prepare for his relocation in the boonies : he sells his working clothes and some valuables to colleagues at a good price, helps a guy so he can get a kayak in return, gets in touch with a survivalist thinker through a secretary etc.

    1. Your post-collapse part of the story was just as good, but I personally did enjoy the beginning most. The workplace writing was rather enjoyable.

    2. bring a back pack every day (with your lunch in it?). One day when the janitor crew leaves out the partial roll of paper product put it in the backpack.
      Repeat as circumstances allow.
NEVER spend your own money on any sort of supply you need while at work, i.e. TP, post-its, pens, etc, etc- and let enough of that sort of thing walk home with you that you don't need to ever buy it.

  3. "Organized religion always, ALWAYS, turns into a for-profit"
As a member of an independent church I don't take exception to this statement but, I think there are those within organized religion that ARE serving for the right reasons (love, not profit). I do however have a problem with this statement. "These stupid bastards, in between molesting choir boys, are telling you that carbon dating is a scam". I have mentioned before that I don't really have a problem with evolution from a religious standpoint (God could have used whatever method he chose in supernaturally creating the universe and all life out of nothing). I do have an issue with the "science" behind it. Carbon dating is no exception. The carbon dating method holds that carbon 14 has an exact timeline for its breakdown (5730 years for a half life if memory serves). That part is true, it's scientifically verifiable. You can test that theory in a lab and you will always come out with the same conclusion. The issue I have is assigning that dating method back "millions" of years. The only way it can remain accurate is if the specimen was unchanged over that entire time period. Any number of things, however, can cause the rate of decay to accelerate or decelerate. Sunlight, exposure to pressure, water, radiation and a host of other factors can skew the sample. I'm not saying it can never be correct that far back, I'm saying it shouldn't be taken as absolute truth when so many things could go wrong. Any dating method beyond recorded history has to be looked at with a skeptical eye because we just don't know for sure what the environmental conditions were past that point. Unless we can know for sure how the specimen was stored we can't apply a constant rate of decay assumption to the level of carbon 14.

    1. If I'm not mistaken, there are a lot of instances when carbon dating won't work, so the folks employ other means such as sediment layers or such. Mostly I just read on the diggers as they supplement the anthropologists studies and if I'm remembering correctly carbon dating isn't usually used much as they study the proto-humans hundreds of thousands of years ago. My usage might be incomplete but was just meant to point out the dogma involved.

    2. Carbon 14 dating - and other methods of dating - all have a margin of error. Scientist admit that. How much of a margin of error actually exists is somewhat questionable- but the numbers it makes should be able to get you into the ballpark.

    3. Sediment layers have the same issue. No one knows for sure how or when the layers got there without applying a uniform constant guess. That guess may be right but, it's equally foolish to dogmatically state an age based on those assumptions. It is not uncommon to find a layer of "20 million year old" rocks sandwiched between layers of "40 million year old" rock.

    4. Your point is taken, but I can't believe the church ever dogmatically stuck with 6k years. Of course, they think the Morning After Pill is killing a real person.

  4. Here in california 3 years ago they reduced shoplifting under $900.00 to a ticketable offense. I know many people that work in grocery stores now look the other way as many preppers are stocking up with canned goods and meats five fingered discounted under their jackets or inside the empty baby stroller.
I might be in this collection also but I choose to remain silent on the subject. But like you said Dr. James, I would never harm the mom and pop place and would never rip off my friends (keep your friends close and your enemies closer) but as time is coming to a close on this society I'll take my chances to stock up on what I can't afford so my children and neighbors can live an extra month or so. So don't go hatin' on me bro's!

    1. In California, you can smoke pot or shoplift, but don't you dare own a gun or ammo. Nice priorities.

    2. What you're referring to is theft over $950 is a felony, under $950 is a misdemeanor. Around here, they go after the misdemeanor stuff with enthusiasm, followed by a synopsis of the arrest, as well as your name and booking/surveillance photograph in the local internet newspaper. If the cops don't know you now, they will after you eventually get caught, then when the economy takes a much greater downturn, you'll already be on the minds of people as a known "bad guy." If I was so poor that I was considering stealing food, I would first adjust my attitude to be content with my lot in life, and then make up the difference with what I couldn't afford by foraging, both urban and rural. Personally I would lean towards violating a Fish & Game rule over means of take or permitted species (for protein) rather than shoplifting if I was that desperate (although the F&G penalty would probably be more severe if caught). By the grace of God, I'm gratefully NOT in that situation.
      Peace out

    3. Here in OZ they've got those damn self-checkouts. Anyway people have been not scanning "everything" or selecting say potato when weighing something more expensive. One of the major players is calling the Police over this.

Now I _don't_ do this practice. However I do morally support it. What is the persons hourly rate and why are they working for "free"?

Secondly. Who the F does the big store think they are? The customer isn't trained expert in scanning so "mistakes" are to be expected. Calling the Police on your customer who made a mistake? If I organise home delivery and there's a mistake do I call the store & get the problem rectified or do I make a statement at the Police Station and have charges laid against the store for theft?

    4. I hate those self-scanners as they work so slowly. And there are ALWAYS twice as many open as cashiers. At Wal-Mart, I'll go to them because their cashiers are even slower. You wouldn't think that was possible. At Kroger, it is worth waiting if you have a lot since they are the opposite. If it keeps your prices low it is worth it, but I still dislike the things.

    5. 445-I think in the large view, with Food Stamps, you shouldn't have to shoplift. What you describe is further down the collapse.

  6. Another good article - you rarely disappoint.
Part of condoning/practising theft could be an "age thing". After more than thirty years living in a European social benefits paradise (no sarcasm) and never using my benefits or abusing the system, now, with poor health, I'm (polite cough) more inclined to "get what I can"...
