There are a lot of cities here in the US which already are out of control. Detroit of course springs to mind, the city proper unable to fund critical services such as street lights, police and fire. It isn’t just that the whole place is financially ruined ( and no, Blacks didn’t run it into the ground even if they did help in looting the corpse, the domestic auto makers did ) but that anarchy itself has been unleashed. Oakland, California isn’t a place you want to visit in the day, especially if you are lacking in melatonin, let alone the night. Now, I don’t know what your definition of a failed state is, but I could equally point to either Nigeria or Detroit/Oakland as a place you don’t want to go on a visit due to out of control crime and lack of government control. New Orleans has a few tourist traps that are mostly, kinda sorta, safe to go to but I think you would have to be half mad to do so, about like the brainless morons offspring of the 10% going to college to major in alcohol consumption and getting a pedigree in power. We have entire cities no longer under the control of the proper authorities and you want to claim America is still a First World Country? Surely my good Sir, you belong drinking with the present generation of the cronies of Shrub.

Small towns with meth labs are another good indicator that the DC circus has lost control of their citizens. Now, I grant you, the war on drugs could be ended instantly with legalization and hence its continuation is a deliberate policy aimed at enriching the Injustice Industry, but that doesn’t change the fact that our fearsome drug czars always want MORE fodder for the profit machine, not less. Why would there be a deliberate hands-off policy towards mom and pop drug manufactures? It simply does not benefit them, not with power and financing through asset forfeiture too alluring to ignore. So I tend to believe that rather than WON’T, the Powers That Be actually CAN’T stop the manufacturing of said drugs. It isn’t lack of resources as LEO’s also Follow The Money and busting meth labs could make them the local undisputed real estate kings. Every bust makes them money and they have every incentive from job security to financial security to do so. Yet it seems as if they can’t find their ass with both hands, a flashlight and a map.

Just as higher authorities can’t control a cesspit of a whole city and Black Only Zones are never pacified, Meth Country has the peoples support a guerrilla movement needs to survive. I mean, come on. We are talking about Meth Heads here, about one percent of an IQ smarter than shrieking chimpanzees flinging feces at each other. They are certainly not smart enough to keep from getting caught from any kind of competent law enforcement, not when just breathing takes most of their efforts. What other explanation do you have other than the population as a whole condones their existence? Even if Joe Citizen hates them and their ways, he doesn’t go out of his way to point them out to the police until they get within explosives range, now does he? How much more support can you get for the idea that the consent of the coerced is only begrudgingly given under duress at this point? Granted, Prohibition was never privately cooperated with, but back then the average citizen might have been a peon but he had enough to be content. Now, the peons are far less handsomely rewarded for their servitude. Before, the Elites comfortably held power even if certain laws were flaunted. Now the power is flaunted as well as the laws.

I should perhaps belabor that point. A century ago, the rising tide was actually raising all boats. Never to the level the propaganda claimed, then or under Reagan certainly, but enough folks saw enough of a raise in the standard of living to have no issues with the Powers. They didn’t abide the laws they disagreed with but they respected the authority that made them. They agreed that even if they were doing a less than perfect job, a power structure beat anarchy. Today, there is no such agreement. Everyone not getting a VERY hefty paycheck from Uncle Sugar has zero respect for the reptiles living in the fetid swamp of DC. They KNOW they are getting screwed. Before, the screwing was soft and respectful. They might be peons but they were still seeing enough compensation for that fact. Today, the humping is unrelenting and painful, never a chance to heal from the last ass pounding. And we know it, even if it isn’t admitted to as some horses can be led to the water but simply won’t drink ( the Kool-Aid drinker who keep insisting ‘Murica will be great again if we just work even harder ).

Surprisingly, one aspect of the lack of control you don’t hear much about, probably because most folks are strangely still attracted to California for whatever strange reasons even Sigmund couldn’t fathom in the deepest grip of his distorted lust, that states suburbia is largely being abandoned by the authorities. Not just in LA but throughout the state. Whitebread neighborhoods as well as other colors of the rainbow. Not even remote terrain hostile outposts such as the old Appalachian redoubts, but right out in the open suburbia. Once again California proves the bellweather state, a microcosm of the nation as a whole. Poor sprawl surrounding Elite enclaves. Just like parts of the southern border, White forts surrounded by Latino crime, hostility and if not careful caught in the crossfire between the cartels and the few hardier souls of the local police or the ICE or non-Latino crime members. We don’t control whole areas down there. It’s actually amazing the authorities have as much control as they do, considering the swaths surrendered. That is from the systems wide welfare distribution. Which can easily be lost from various factors pushing our system off the cliff face. I opt for the surrender of the PetroDollar standard globally, suddenly eliminating half of our oil supply, but a ship this rusty and leaking can get swamped by different waves. Stop fearing a phanton FedGov and start fearing your non-tribal neighbors, as well as your gravy train being on very thin ice indeed.

Nothing works anymore. It is hard to intuitively understand this as almost all of us grew up after our economic decline started ( the Great Depression was about factory overcapacity, resource glut from mechanization of farming, and what took that from recession to depression, central bank manipulation and seizure of control. It was NOT about losing wealth, but wealth transfer, as the serfs gold was taken. Later, that included silver and soon after that, even paltry copper ) and things falling apart is so boringly normal for us. We have no perspective. Which is why you hear doomer writers talking as if they were waiting for the decline to actually start. As if they still have a chance to acquire enough resources to survive the decline, then being greedy enough to actually think they have an ice cubes chance in Hell of THRIVING during that decline. Sad, pathetic delusional creatures that they are. Profit sharing ended decades ago. Some still fear the government, as per the usual Big Government boogiemen from the CIA and IRS, but the fact that ever more Fearsome Folk are pulled out of the hat to frighten us attests to, not enough TRULY fear the government anymore.

We KNOW nothing works anymore, the big difference being we can’t translate that systematically, and so we also know government doesn’t work well anymore. That includes law enforcement. Nothing against the beat cop. He can only do his masters bidding ( his impotence there translating over to petty harassment that gets all the press ). Which includes being a LEO rather than a Peace Officer, a Brown Shirt rather than a blue one. Do you wonder why they sometimes retreat into indifference and apathy, soothing their souls with donuts ( fun filled fact. The “cop eating donuts” meme was created out of necessity. Before our society went 24 hour commerce, the only thing open at night when cops on graveyard were trying to stay awake on coffee were donut shops ). Nothing working is merely the result of resource contraction. People are selective about that definition, not applying it to their marriage or their kids future or their job security, but at base everything not working can be explained that simply. With law enforcement not working, how can you expect anything else to function properly?

Those with first hand experience in the system, the truly poor rather than the cash flow poor, understand the bitch be broken. They understand their odds of being caught are low and they understand that the justice system works against them because they can’t bribe their way to immunity. They know they can be punished for being poor rather than because they did anything wrong ( victimless crimes do NOT count, as the poor and Libertarians would agree ), so they have no vested interest in being law abiding. As the legions of True Poor grow, and this cultural awareness spreads, the masses lose interest in the ruling paradigm. They begin to understand that power comes out of the barrel of a gun. Not that they are interested in revolt, because life is hard enough minding your own business without borrowing trouble, just that they understand their options. They are apart from the system and could care less about it other than what they can personally gain.

All these Black Ghetto uprisings are not revolution, not in the 1960’s way. Back then the revolt was to belong to the system benefits wise. Now it is just about power. Not power to rule, but power against being ruled with too heavy of a hand. Today’s demonstrations are basically a tribal adaptation in reducing the control of their benefactors. Since emancipation, Blacks refusal to assimilate has been harmful to them economically ( we needn’t get into the can of worms as to how much is voluntary and how much is compulsory in this refusal ) but recently and into the future this has positive effects. As centralization breaks upon the shoals of energy decline ( some of you get tired of my focus on this, yet as anthropologists far more educated than I say repeatedly, “it is ALL about the food” to explain ALL human behavior, and today oil IS food. I feel I shouldn’t have to explain myself as this should be self evident, but I guess since my sole job now is to explain I can’t complain much ), tribal identity and unity is now a very good thing. It is finally advantageous. And the Black Tribe is not only saying “kill whitey, the face of our oppression”, it is also saying “we didn’t get on that boat voluntarily, so keep the money coming in if you know what is good for you”.

The riots are not about some black thug being gunned down by cops, who are usually Uncle Tom Blacks anyway. Oh, the individual protestors THINK they are protecting one of their own. But just as larger forces move on their own volition regardless of individual perspective ( such as industrialism against ingrained agrarian power being behind the Civil War, regardless of all those individual actors playing by a different script ), here we see how in effect the Black tribe is reacting to encroachment into their designated territory. They don’t care if Whitey thinks he is in charge, if all the Blacks in office and behind the wheel of a beat car are told what to do by the rich honkey’s. What they care about is being left alone. Don’t invade our territory to punish one of our foot soldiers seeking sanctuary from your injustice system. I’m sure no one individual could articulate their actions as such, but this is the message being delivered. Hands off, or we Knock Down Game more of your citizens in reprisal ( the normal casualties are just to keep On Message that Crackers best remember to fear all Black folk ).

The message is, Uncle Same might inflict a few casualties in this war but we have won it. We control our territory ( and, again, to those Whites in enemy occupied territory, you had best understand that you are NOT in charge there. They are. You keep hanging around you will be a casualty sooner or later. You think a high-cap semi scares a tribe of warriors? Numbers will always triumph. In short, evacuate while you have the economic means to do so ). In the next continued article we cover mountain tribes, occupied cities, California suburbs, meth towns and the border area, all regions the FedGov has lost control of.

In our last series of articles, if a collection of two articles could constitute a series or if it was merely a two-parter or even just a continued article, I’m unsure of the etiquette in this situation, I mentioned that most people don’t realize how little control Washington DC has over the rest of the country, in effect mimicking Rome that bribed the barbarians surrounding that imperial city so that they might refrain from sacking her ( which worked, until the money stopped ). I’d like to run further with that theme, and hopefully it won’t be “running with scissors” because we know how THAT usually turns out, your little sister screaming her fool head off as an inch of cold steel bobs up and down from her eye socket, how the hell did those safety points DO that?, blood gushing down her shirt, you just knowing somehow this is all going to be blamed on you just because you made a double dog dare. Bitches. Anyway, I’m not sure when you could say when we turned that corner, using finances rather than fear to control our population, even though we still do use BOTH, and sometimes just fear, but let’s frail about in the dark together, shall we?

Up until the War Of Northern Aggression And Colonialization when the industrialists got all uppity because their raw material providers thought they should have a voice in their local economies, there were pretty clear arguments for staying in the Union. Namely, why not? There were more benefits than costs. American culture has had way over three hundred years to reinforce avarice and greed. Free lunches for everyone, yo! After the war, however, not as many people got to the head of the line. As is normal in industrialized economies, those in charge gave a whole new meaning to greedy pigs wallowing in their exclusive slop bucket ( on par if not exceeding the Sun King, exceptions such as Sam Walton used as Poster Boys but their descendents always reverting to type ). Immigrants were allowed in with open arms ( this happened prior to the war, but that experiment proved so successful that as what worked against the Confederacy was applied against western indigs and workers rights advocates ) and the common man was delegated to his proper place as peasant once again, order restored to the universe of the Elites. For a short period, once when social unrest was apparent even to the humpers eyeballs deep in their hog trough during the Depression they caused, and once right after the World War when no one in their right mind could think of denying war vets better rights ( as happened in Britain after the First War, when the upper class finally saw their power wane and the workers actually got something more than starvation wages ), the poor got a taste of the wealth. Those were aberrations, not an American constant as Libertarian Cheerleaders somehow assume ( I used to be one of those assumers ).

Here is Reality 101. The Constitution gives you no rights. Only force and the threat of force gives you any rights. American Blacks understand this. The American Whitey’s sadly do not. The Whites, far better armed, keep redrawing the red line in the sand, Obama style, completely dangerous only on paper. Blacks, no arms except the warlords enforcers, are far more dangerous because they understand the laws of force. I’ll return to the Blacks as they are a large part of our story here in the imperial homeland occupation, but let’s concentrate on bigger picture for now. Peace, prosperity and order come out of the barrel of a gun. Going back to our ancient ancestors scratching at lice and waving sticks around screeching at intruders, force and the threat of force allowed for peace. Today, our navy ( with the older ships, not the new ones mothballed after going dead in the water from the Microsoft Blue Screen Of Death ) provides the same function. Leave ocean vessel commerce alone or we bomb you ( I’ll leave alone for now our navy’s inability to handle aquatic guerrillas ). That threat allows global trade.

The common man, the poor ( the middle class no longer exists, the only thing keeping them above the dirt poor being home equity which has been, mostly, seized by the banks ), they have NOT been part of the power structure for all this time except the two above examples, short lived. The federal government might bribe them to keep peace and prosperity, but that doesn’t mean they have any control. They are not part of the profit sharing plan, and if you doubt that for a second ask yourself why the purchasing power of the 99% has been down for almost fifty years. Food Stamps and Obama phones are not wealth. They are alms to the poor to keep the poor from rioting and that is all. Almost all welfare given by the government on almost all levels might give the illusion of transfer payments to the poor but almost all of it is siphoned off to the Elite’s profit centers. Free medical is just welfare for the Health Care Industry. Free cell phones are government welfare to the cellular carriers to subsidize expanded coverage. Food Stamps enrich the bank that performs the transactions and the MegaCorporations that control all of our food supply. And etcetera.

Fat deaf pigs of radio commentators might cry to the heavens that poor people are defrauding the government because they don’t want to work, but the reality is, just as in George’s world of opposites, flipped 180 degrees. Fat cats in the corporations and bureaucracies have no interest in working for a living and so live off the dwindling resource base while the masses are starved, not from lack of food but from malnutrition. All the welfare that actually channels back to the elite is the bribes to keep public order. Money is created out of thin air, loaned to the government which sends it to their cronies via welfare payments. The military is funded to keep the oil flowing and the foreigners are paid in the same paper promises for that oil. Nobody works anymore except at keeping that apparatuses moving and not at all very hard even at that. “Lazy poor people” is, sadly, mostly believed by the poor themselves, the same folk delusional about how beneficial the fantasyland of the “free market” is, and is basically just another control mechanism used to make the poor sad and embarrassed they took welfare rather than angry that is all they get as the local politician is wrinkled ass deep in whores and junkets to faraway climes. I know we’ve strayed far from centralized control of the hinterlands, but understanding the bribe is important to grasp the extent and effectiveness of same. Continued tomorrow.

So you're looking for a side job to make a little extra money.

For the last twenty plus years, my husband and I have lived on our off-grid homestead and have looked for ways to make a little extra money on the side. Something that didn't take too much time but would provide a little needed cash to supplement what we produce for ourselves. Disclaimer: Hubby does work part time for 9 months of the year driving school bus. Doesn't pay much, but it is some steady money we can count on to pay our basic bills and keep our kids in shoes. Side work and odd jobs help round out the budget.

Some ground rules that we go by:

A) Needs little or no money to get started.

B) It's may be something we are doing anyways but we have a little left over. We don't believe in specializing or doing a lot of one thing. We have found it is better to do a variety of stuff for ourselves and then if there is a little left over to sell and help cover our cost, great. That way if the market changes for some reason, we can absorb the excess into our household. No down side that way. Plus the more you do for yourself, the less money you need and the less taxes you pay.

C) Be willing to do the little jobs that no one else wants to do.

D) Remember the law. Don't do anything that requires a permit/professional license or has a high degree of risk/liability. For example: we don't do roofs, wire houses, work on cars, etc.

E) Have several streams of income. That way if one slows down, you have options.

F) Be dependable and super honest. Cut people a good deal whenever you can. This is your best form of advertisement. Let people know what you can or cannot do. Don't get in over your head.

G) If someone wants to give you something nice always say yes, even if you can't use it. Be the "go-to-person". If we can't use it, I'll call around and find someone who can. You can earn a lot of good will by doing that. I can't even begin to list all the free stuff we have been given over the years: leather couch and love seat, 1,000 sq ft of solid hickory flooring, queen size bed, lamps, tables, clothes, sinks, tile, lumber, cut and split firewood, dishwashers, food, canning jars......

In no particular order, here are 10 side jobs we have tried in the past or are currently doing:

1) Sell farm fresh eggs.

Profitable? Somewhat.

Comments: This doesn't really make us any extra money, but it does cover all our expenses so the eggs we eat are basically free. In other words, we supply all the labor and knowledge and our customers' money pays all the bills. As an added bonus, I get the chicken manure for my garden, knowledge on how to raise chickens, and I know that my eggs are from happy chickens.

2) Sell extra garden produce.

Profitable? Again the answer is: somewhat.

Comments: I don't really do this to make money. I garden to feed my family. I like to sell my excess to cover my out-of-pocket cost (seeds, plant starts, garden tools, etc.) That way I am basically eating for free in exchange for my labor. I did a farmer's market for a while but I didn't like the time commitment of manning a booth. Plus, it seems you either brought too much or not enough. I much prefer to pre-sell to a select group of people and only harvest what is needed.

3) Contract out Hubby with the Woodmizer Sawmill.

Profitable? Yeah, but contracting out at someone's place can be time consuming (commuting time) and people can be a pain to work with.

Comments: Our used, basic (no hydraulics) Woodmizer has more than paid for itself by providing lumber for our homestead's building needs. We've contracted out before but some folks have an unrealistic expectation on what "rough-cut" lumber is. They expect kiln dried, perfect dimension lumber at a fraction of Home Depot price. In the future, we are looking at cutting and stockpiling lumber to sell by the board foot and advertise by putting up ads around town.

4) Make wooden boxes, stools, shelves, toys, tables, etc. to sell at Medieval fairs.

Profitable? Yes.

Comments: We did well at this but eventually got tired of all the traveling. The whole point of our homestead is to live on it.

5) Odd jobs for widowed ladies.

Profitable? Very much so.

Comments: We do all the little things around the house that they don't/can't do: change electrical outlets, fix the toilet flappers, move furniture, paint walls, basic repairs, plant trees, start their gardens, dig holes/trenches, hang drywall, dog/farm animal sitting, wash windows, basically whatever they need. It may not be steady work (40 hours a week) but once people realize that you are an honest, good worker who shows up when you say you will, your name will get around and you'll get calls. Don't forget to charge enough to cover your travel time. Even charging $15-$35 an hour (depending on the job/hassle/travel), you'll still be cheaper than if they needed to call a company. However, don't do any job that the state requires a professional license or permit.

6) Lawn mowing and yard maintenance.

Profitable? Yes

Comments: We started with buying all our own equipment and getting a lot of contracts. Years went by and our equipment was starting to get old and needed to be replaced. We had some other things that we wanted to do around our place and not be so busy working for others. So we went to our clients and asked them who would be willing to buy their own equipment/fuel and we would supply the labor. Several took us up on the offer. Now we just have a few lawns but we have none of our own money invested in it.

7) Raise broiler chickens.

Profitable? Yes. If you don't count your labor/time, you can double your money in 2 months.

Comments: This required that we built up a clientele list, but once word got around, that wasn't a problem. To make sure we were legal, we would technically sell you the live bird and then butcher it for free. We stopped doing this because I wanted more free time in the summer to do fun stuff like going to the lake. We also tried selling butcher lambs, pigs and rabbits but this wasn't as profitable for us. A neighbor had a milk cow and this was very profitable but it is quite a commitment.

8) Cutting firewood.

Profitable? Yes.

Comments: This made us money (especially since we already have all the equipment for our own needs) but it's labor intensive. I think there are a lot of easier ways to make money. Plus when the housing bubble burst, everyone and their dog started cutting firewood and the bottom fell out of the market for a couple of years. It's a fall-back plan, but remember, it's EVERYONE'S fall-back plan.

9) Selling bait worms.

Profitable? Somewhat.

Comments. This was actually kind of fun. (Yeah, I need to get out more, LOL.) We did this back when we lived in town. In the summer, we would take a walk over to the local high school while the sprinklers were running. Hubby would hold the flashlight and I would pick up the night crawlers. We would sell them by the dozen to a fishing/bait shop. Didn't make a lot of money, but it didn't take any investment or a lot of time either.

10) Rent out rooms/AirBnB.

Profitable? Yes.

Comments. We did this when we still lived in town twenty years ago (before kids). We had 3 extra bedrooms and rented them out to college students. The money coming in was more than enough to pay ALL our expenses (mortgage, electric, oil heat, phone, water, etc.) We basically lived for free. This enabled us to save all our money to buy some acreage outright and build our cabin debt-free. Now of days, there is AirBnB. If you have the room and like people, this is a fairly simple way to make money.

It might be argued that Political Correctness either replaced religion or was instrumental in its demise. The most rabid communists make the most fervent atheists ( of course, it is hard to beat Ayn Rand in atheism, so that claim can also be made to the other extreme of the political spectrum ) and one can see how eliminating or profiting off the death of the influence of religion was advantageous to the insufferable pricks. Without God taking up anyone’s time the weak minded can substitute political dogma for the religious kind. Of course, when I poke fun of religious folk for being dogmatic ( wasn’t there a bumper sticker, “leash your dogma”? ), I fully realize that mental condition is universal, just differing in its focus, so don’t feel you are being stigmatized. Not like you did the D&D nerds, anyway, but I shan’t digress. But all that being as it may, there were larger forces at work in the demise of religious influence besides political correctness taking over the Left or commercialism. As I brought up in the “Death Of Malls” series, our society has fragmented in its social cohesion, going from Corporation Man to Unibomber Hermit.

Lack of cohesion is of course most beneficial to the Elite as the perfect way to control the masses. Nobody has anything in common, not even those ducks that look and sound the same but aren’t all equally ducks ( so just because it looks like one and sounds like one doesn’t make it one ). Nobody has the same interests, believes the same things or acts enough alike to form coherent tribal unities. We are all made weaker by having picked from the smorgasbord of cultures. Diversity is the strength of our rulers, dividing and conquering for ultimate control. The only unity we achieve is online, a comparatively useless form of cohesion. You’d almost think that the Internet was funded to achieve the ultimate division amongst the ruled. It easily could have been. The phone companies were held hostage by their granted monopoly and Bell Labs was always dependent on military spending. And who is to say Silicon Valley isn’t channeled money from Washington? Just the job elimination possibilities of the computer network would have been enough to fund the Internet by the moneyed interests. Throw in social engineering…

While we are visiting Tinfoil Hat Land, I’ve always had a belief that the New York publishing industry ( only kept in that location by playing ball with the 1%-otherwise they would have been outsourced overseas ) is a funding site for political control. The most obvious example is the huge advances paid to politicians, the worst writing and lack of sales giving voice to the lie it was ever a commercial decision. I was quite enamored by “The Third Wave” when it was published, far more readable and topical, for me, than “Future Shock” had been. Now, from the perspective of age and wisdom ( I was a wee lad when it came out, and like other influences and favorites such as Lucifer’s Hammer and Dune, it was read multiple times ), I see it as probably nothing more than an “encouraged” argument for globalization. Didn’t you identify with Ted? I never read the Unibomber Manifesto, there were simply too many other mandatory reading assignments I was giving myself in my limited free time, but I liked both his rejection of technology and his conviction of action. Out of millions of malcontents, most of them fellow ‘zine publishers at the time-now bloggers- he was one of the very few who had the balls to do something about the state of the world. I don’t care how wrong his actions were, at least he did something besides bitching like the rest of us. I almost think he was my major influence, although of course one has to beware of the blinding brilliance of hindsight. I was a major brooder, reading and thinking and doing little else ( how else to defend my very low prep levels on a $25k salary? Enough wheat buckets to make a large bookcase, two SKS’s and a few no.1 Enfield’s but almost no ammunition, and really nothing else. I of course had child support but I had the same financial burden on a $15k job which bought me the B-POD and oh so much more supplies-the only explanation was being a NON-Action Jackson ).

Up to this time I had always credited Y2K for my wake-up call that prepping needed to exceed the Mormon One Year Plan, but I think Ol’ Ted gave me the needed discipline and focus to make prepping central in my life rather than periphery. Here was a dude living my dream, a cabin in the boonies, built by hand on an extreme budget and surviving without a salary, with time left over to not just preach to the world but to try to change it. I don’t want to change the world-I know it is too late, but all other lessons resonated. So perhaps that is why I use the Unibomber example for fragmented culture. We are all hermits alone in our cold ass plywood cabin, pissed at the world as it implodes. You could almost, almost, wish for a return of religion from before. Of course, the reason I’m glad it went on a hiatus is the extreme danger of religion, the bloodthirsty nature of its leaders to forcibly convert all non-believers ( that was the Papist and the Protestant view, not just Muslims ). In the future, when religion returns as a cultural and political unifier, there will be bloody repercussions along with its more benign aspects. I’d strongly advise cooperation and single-mindedness in wiping out all resurfacing cults after the collapse. Not that your group will heed, as they will most likely be among them. Well, it was a nice break while it lasted.

I’ve never been all that impressed with Amazon Prime insofar as the free TV shows and movies. If I used it for its other features than the added bonus of the TV would be sweet, but I don’t so it isn’t. Compared to Netflix it is sad and pathetic. After watching “Soprano’s” we don’t really use it but perhaps once or twice a week for a movie that is decent ( I‘m waiting to watch the “Man In The High Castle“ series, there are simply too many better ones on Netflix such as our current ones “Mad Men“ and “Shameless“ ). I’ve tried a lot of other movies that were NOT all that decent, one of which was “Monsters And Mazes”. I tried to like it since I used to be a D&D nerd and who doesn’t like Tom Hanks, but the thing was so atrociously foul I couldn’t get past fifteen minutes. Hey, I LOVE cheesy ‘80’s movies. “Toxic Avenger” ( another good one on Amazon ) and the Stephen King low budget early book-based. American Ninja, RoboCop’s. But low budget and cheesy is not the same as poorly made and Monsters was just poorly made.

But it got me interested in the movie itself and its history I lived through. I don’t know how much is common knowledge and how much is just interesting to role playing geeks such as myself, but the book “Monsters and Mazes” was a quick hack job by a once popular author to sensationalize a “true life mystery” where a D&D player disappeared, supposedly mentally disturbed by his need to escape from the real world. It all seemed rather silly, as D&D was of course escapism indeed and a lot of its most rabid fans were the complete social rejects and outcasts that needed to avoid the real world ( I was one, but luckily joined the military and joined society, once socialized quickly realizing the limitations of the game I had once lived and breathed-not that I came to dislike role playing, just the fantasy element ). And the whole “religious nut jobs who thought the game was Satanism” thing was simple overreaction by a bunch of hypocrites. Your pantheon is more valid than other cultures, why? Why is your God “real” but all the other depicted in the game not? How are deities worshiped BEFORE Christ now an instrument of the devil? We dweebs and dorks had many a question of our detractors, but of course they were not interested in a dialog. They merely wished to smear an unapproved industry from their bully pulpits.

I think that early exposure to irrationality and the further gentle nagging from my mother to embrace the Baptists my stepfather belonged to ( she was a non-practicing Papist prior ) really got my teeth itching at an early age about religion. And while I’ll always be grateful to the Catholics for a first rate middle school education, their block of instruction included enough religion that I was set for life on the afterlife, as it were. I respect other peoples need for a higher purpose but I don’t share in it. But I also think I witnessed the end of religion in America and didn’t even realize it at the time ( as a guiding moral and cultural force, not as a hobby most engaged in, if you’ll excuse that sounding like frivolity ). Reagan and his cavalier use of the nuclear threat guided by his belief in the End Times and the fundamentalist Christians at the time seemingly more popular than ever, TV evangelicals along with the seemingly mainstream rejection of The Devil’s Game aforementioned, all turned out to be the apex of religious influence as a principle cultural and political force.

If you’ll remember the early ‘90’s, religion was suddenly backhanded by the Klinton Klan when a separatist ( NOT a supremist, a far uglier animal, but the words sounded close enough for the public educated. Just like niggardly, a word that should be closer in definition to Jews than Blacks ) was ambushed and sniped and then a church building full of children was set aflame. Now, I’m not against law enforcement and order. I’m not crazy enough to think I’d still be alive otherwise if the institution wasn’t present ( you can be all concealed carry ninja that you want, but the reason you’ll fight so many fewer criminals is due to the general presence and threat of LEO’s. They aren’t there to suppress crime as it occurs, they are there to discourage more people from becoming criminals ). But I can also see a False Flag Attack when it happens, unlike so many patriotic lemmings. And the fact that there was so much less of an outcry than there should have been ( you get impeached for lying about a blowjob but not for killing kids? How humped up is that? ) tells me that religion by that point was politically powerless. Not that you’d expect the “respectable” churches to stick up for the fringe ones, they can be very unchristian-like when it comes to competition. Whenever there is a hint of polygamy, every established religion out there joins forces to try to electrocute the guilty.

But that is the thing. They still reserve the same amount of moral superiority and On High judgment for those they don’t care for, but now they have no sway in matters political. I think that is what Ruby Ridge, Waco and the Dravidians symbolized. The demise of religious power. Government has attacked religious cults before, as in when the early Mormons were slaughtered in Indiana/Illinois, one of the I states, and decided to found a nation where they alone could be the intolerant ones. That attack was either led or at least sanctioned by the authorities. But the early ’90’s seemed to have a feeling of finality about it. As in, that was the last attack we needed to conduct. You can certainly agree that since then the larger culture in general has had less religious influence. Hedonism has been gaining ground since the end of WWII ( as how else to fuel consumerism? ) but there had always been an element of push/pull with religiously motivated restraint. That is gone, again, culturally ( more individuals might be religious but they hold no sway outside their small powerless tribe ). Continued and concluded tomorrow.

BUSINESS IDEA-post 2 of 2 today

After reading the comments and the one on diversifying your self employment income, suddenly I remembered a guy I knew twenty years ago. I hadn’t thought of him all this time. He would take your fired brass and reload for you, selling at a nice discount from a retail price. Now, obviously this was only one of his businesses, and I think it never occurred to me[j1] to think of this as a viable one because, well, you know-everybody who shoots a lot reloads themselves. And I always discounted post-collapse reloading as a business because you would need those irreplaceable components for your own tribal needs. But I was looking at this the wrong way. If we are in an economic contraction, and the weekend plinker becomes a thing of the past, and gun owners aren’t all reloading themselves because it is no longer economical to buy the equipment as you can only afford to shoot a little now lather than a lot, perhaps becoming a commercial reloader on a small scale can be a business.

This is a Great Depression business, as envisioned. You aren’t catering to a guy with a 9mm shooting 500 rounds. Rather, the hunter needing a half a box or a guy target practicing a clip at a time to stay proficient. You are, in effect, selling single cigarettes rather than packs or cartons. My question becomes, what is the cheapest reloader and dies that will last a long time you could invest in? What dies will cover most of the population ( the least amount of calibers to cover most of the population )? Buying powder in bulk saves on the hazard fees, so how much less is the least amount of powder compared to someone buying it themselves? I don’t think you save much buying bulk primers, but I’m sure you do with powder. We are talking about the cheapest in inventory you can get away with and still provide a cheaper price than for someone to do it themselves. The equipment isn’t meant to be fast and easy, manual labor is okay here.

I’m presenting these questions for comments. This is not a how-to article. Those reloaders with experience are asked to please share in your knowledge. I don’t know if I want this to be MY business, but knowing the options is nice. It might help out those that have the investment income ( remember, we are minimizing here. $1k might get you a great set-up and inventory, but that is a long payback at ten cents a round profit. A better option would be, say, $4oo ). Think of answers such as, do they sell bulk bullets or is a few dozen about the same price as a few hundred? Primers-price per at a hundred, or a thousand. Price per charge at one can powder, or at the max amount of powder in one shipment? The best press at the cheapest price? The cheapest dies ( but not low quality )? Thanks for your help, in advance.
