prepping without permission 1

PREPPING WITHOUT PERMISSION part 1

Note: I don't think Saturday posts are working out, so this will be the last regular one.  If I do get ambitious and post one occasional I'll let you know Friday.  When I'm in a down period like now, struggling, that one extra post is just a PITA.  Thanks.
*
It has been eight years since the economic unwind started.  Which in about the same time, the national debt nearly doubled to a point it is probably now baked into the cake that it can never be paid back.  Eight years ago, global weather trends started affecting all our major grain growing regions at the same time, for the worse.  I understand that when you start getting older the years just sort of fly by way too quick, and eight years might not seem like too much, but that is an incredible amount of time to be kicking the can down the road financially AND resource wise.  If it was just finances we would muddle through a few more decades.  But it ain’t just about money, it is about fuel and food.  We are at the end of American Empire ( and our dominant global currency is under assault as should be expected because that was ALWAYS a one sided arrangement benefiting no one else ) and may suddenly overnight find we can’t buy the 60% of oil we import, as the oil supply contracts ( and/or the fake oil is too expensive to drill ) which is happening with bad timing as our aquifers are drying up ( north Texas completely dry, up the line in the Corn Corridor the wells must go deeper all the time, and with California tapping into deep levels that took thousands of years to form ) and centralized feed lots are killing off our protein supplies due to disease.  Really, you can’t see a clear and present danger from this perfect storm?

*

Perfect storms are events that take a multitude of singular events usually not considered problems and mix and match to form an exponential problem unthinkable, unpreventable and un-friggin-believable.  The humans on this planet are facing one right now and over 99% of them while possibly having a clue, don’t give a crap.  Too many distractions and too much to do just surviving and thriving.  It starts at the home level, the family unit entirely focused on the here and now and business as usual and all treasure devoted to prospering in the status quo.  And from there every social layer on up is the same way.  Even the prepper/survivalist commercial entities are treating the coming die-off as a big joke only good for enriching themselves with.  While some might approach genuine understanding and real helpfulness, mixing business with survival usual skews the equation, good sense wise.  But let’s start with the first and last layer of resistance as far as you are concerned, because with the can being kicked down the road this long it is just common sense the ass WILL fall out of civilization any damn day now, the home.  Stated simply without embellishment, bitches be setting you up for failure.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ( mainly because a good put down is too good to waste only using it once ), your wife WILL ( with apologies to my female minions ) deny you the means to prep and then WILL blame you for failing to provide after the collapse.  That isn’t a gender bias, that is just human nature.  That is where prepping without permission comes into play.  More next article.

I OTTA SMACK HIM 4 of 4

All the survivalists out there that play militia, embracing to an embarrassing degree everything military whether it makes sense or not, parrot the military strategy “the best defense is an offence”.  One wonders if this wasn’t colored by such considerations as the brutal amount of labor needed to build defenses and more recently the financial needs of the military industrial complex, but be that as it may, the truism is apropos in more instances than not.  If you wait for the enemy to attack, your battleground is in close proximity to your civilians and farmland.  If you attack your enemy, than it is his breeders and eateries that are in danger.  On the other hand, your average survivalist is also, if one goes by the popularity of the biggest blogs in revenue, a friggin religious nut job spewing doctrine from organized religion rather than from on high ( I’m aware it is hard to separate the politics as that would require a doctorate in religious organizations histories.  A good litmus test would be to ask if a policy benefited God or the Church, but unless I’m mistaken most folks embrace the social aspects of a religious organization and usual accept church politics as inseparable from biblical doctrine ), and all too often the New Testament soft hearted BS implicitly backs a defensive posture militarily.  It seems good church folk are not allowed to act too barbaric in war ( one wonders if the Vikings raiding Christian churches had anything to do with an unconscious distain towards offensive warfare.  You might point to the Hundreds Year War as a counterexample, but I’d guess that was mostly civilized even given it was a civil war with most problems caused by the lack of logistics causing over grazing by invaders ).  You can smite the evil ones, but only defensively or in very rare occasions in retaliation.

*

Alas, offensive war is exactly what you need to wage if you hope to survive.  In an energy scarce environment, you can’t afford to allow your crops to be stolen, your breeders to be captured, your offspring to be taken into slavery or your soldiers to get soft on garrison duty ( garrison is for down time between combat duties, as an R&R ).  Being preemptive in combat, going on the offensive to minimize defensive requirements and dangers, gives the appearance of violence and viciousness.  It does not sit well with our largely non-violent population ( playing GTA and watching Die Hard does not make you violent.  It channels your natural aggression safely, something to keep in mind every time some idiot Congressman champions less violent entertainment.  Those fools benefit from the trend ).  The most violent the experts agree on, post-apocalypse wise, is to patrol your territory to resist incursions.  I say, screw that.  Go Planet Of The Apes on your enemies, and bring the fight to them.  Do unto them before they can do unto you.  Smite them, for soon they shall invent a reason to smite you.  Embrace the warrior, not the soldier.  He who radiates from his center outwards, cleansing the land of future potential enemies, is safer.

I otta smack him 3

I OTTA SMACK HIM 3 of 4

Centralized government doesn’t have a monopoly on violence of course.  They are more prone to tend toward excess, since bands and tribes usually only fight to extinction during rare events such as super-volcano induced bottleneck events whereas all civilizations must grow and grow until they grow too much and then use up their resources with population growth and soil erosion ( for the upslope of imperial growth, population growth is good and necessary, on the downside that just makes all the other problems exponentially worse ) and so to them the end is always an extinction event ( discount the last 500 years of European colonialism and the reliance on central banks to finance empires-that skewers the historical norm of far more violent crashes and burns, the area never to recover from the biological damage.  Europe ate off of its colonies and was able to recover, some better than others, until they entered into total war with each other, yet even then all the countries never achieved complete soil degradation [ thanks to colonial fertilizer importation or coal-to-artificial-nitrogen ] such as the empires from Greece, Italy, the middle east, etc. ).  Smaller political units are just as violent as empires, but it is rare to be wiped out in normal times ( regular weather ) because the violence is small scale.  Rather than stark survival, the violence is used as conflict resolution and contract enforcement.  Violence is normal in every human organization.  It is hidden in wealthy empires, monopolized by kings, practiced by all males in tribes and nomadic groups, and it all can be tracked back to those cute little chimpanzees who, when not wearing diapers or signing for a banana but back in their natural habitat, are territorial, vicious, violent, tribal allegiance orientated ( and they even follow Bush’s lead in attacking on the pretext of anticipating future violence ).

*

Evolution should not be dismissed by religious types.  Darwin was deeply religious and thought evolution to be a process designed by the Creator ( the “five-thousand-year-old-earth” was mostly Papist politics ).  When the devote ignore evolution they dismiss the entire study of anthropology and miss vital clues as to how man acts and will act in crisis.  And when it comes to food shortages, man is hardwired by hundreds of thousands of years of evolution to use violence against all other outside groups to help his tribe.  You understand that, you know why American Blacks passionately hate Whites ( they never assimilated from tribal to nation state ).  Blacks can be slurping up all the fried chicken and orange soda their high blood pressure can tolerate, overweight enough that hunger never motivates them, but since they are tribal, and Whites are not their tribe, we are the nemesis.  Add hunger to that, wow!  You think Blacks hate you now, just wait for the real violence to erupt when our cities run out of food.  That alone would disrupt the whole equation of passively grouping together for survival ( in other words, your violence is only defensive, the group blinded by the myth of non-violence ), but that is just the maraschino cherry on top of the crap sundae of the civilization collapse.  Everyone else is going to also now hate you, and act accordingly.  You can flagellate yourself into self congratulatory religious fervor over being peaceful and only willing to engage in violence when necessary, and then en masse meet your maker ( and I hope for your sake he is appreciative of your sacrifice ), or you can embrace your human nature and increase your odds of survival.

I otta smack him 2

I OTTA SMACK HIM 2 of 4

Empires expand violently.  They don’t send an engraved invitation inviting their neighbors to come voluntarily join the democracy.  They are assimilated into the Borg.  With extreme prejudice.  White boys spent a couple of centuries trying to wipe out the original inhabitants of this continent.  They used one tribe against another, germ warfare, technological advantage and an unending influx of immigration to replace their casualties and grow their numbers.  It was nothing but greed and violence and the Whites were 100% convinced they were righteous and pure.  They didn’t mind using slavery to feed the growing army of fellow citizens to gain superiority, either.  As the proto-empire grew by hook or by crook, first colonizing the former white-brothers land in the South, then colonizing the Indians lands, switching to colonizing the former Spanish lands, after the land ran out we switched to colonizing lands overseas.  Then turned against our White brethren from the land of our origins to win the Industrial Revolution race.  Then again to win the Oil Age race.  Non peaceful, all violent.  To grow our empire.  The citizens at home made minimal sacrifices and were asked to do not much more than pay a creeping tax rate and to wave the flag when military parades were presented, and allow no fellow citizen to dissent under penalty of law and shunning.  In exchange, they received three times the daily number of calories needed, endless and mindless entertainment and if desired the ability to breed unchecked.  As long as the surplus remained, it was a swell deal.

*

Alas, even with a front row seat to the phlegm charged death throttle of our empire, few seem to appreciate all the violence that put it there, all that will be caused by the process of its demise.  Violence happens to other people when your empire is growing.  The average soldier experiences the training for violence but can with luck avoid its actual employment.  He is more mindful of the potential, so has at least the mindset to see its coming.  The civilians, on the other hand, have experienced a below normal level of violence personally, if they are in the right stage of empire, and only experience it vicariously through entertainment.  As the average empire prefers to experience peace and quiet at home so all its reserves and resources can be applied towards acquisition, non-violence is proactively encouraged and/or demanded with that goal in mind.  Violence becomes a non-concept.  Something existing outside their reality.  Luxury is endangered by violence, and that feeds the trend towards peace.  Easy living and reality avoidance and propaganda in place of education feed the trend.  Violence is portrayed as a sickness ( rehabilitate prisoners, medicate returning veterans ).  In time, all the intellectuals, in complete sincerity, push for more and more non-violence.  Villainizing and denying.  Reinforcing the need for all actions to embrace social harmony and demonize all violence.  Even self-defense, as with a lot of religions ( thou shalt not kill is NOT the correct translation.  Thou shalt not murder.  The difference?  Murder is not sanctioned by the state, but with a license, killing is ).

I OTTA SMACK HIM 1 of 4

Sweet Lord Baby Jesus On A Pogo Stick!  If you meander on over to:

http://www.alt-market.com/2690-economic-crisis-how-you-can-prepare-over-the-next-six-months

This is a great example of how people that are convinced they are really smart and think they know all the answers can be flaming morons if they are given half the chance.  Okay, that might be a bit harsh.  How about, “how out of touch in their ivory tower they are”?  In short, if you are concerned about operational security you are a lone wolf survivalist who is out to no good, planning on massacring all the innocent to take their supplies.  The problem with this article is that there is so much good advice in it, one might mistake the bad points as feasible options or sound advice.  Since there is safety in numbers, you should gather your group at the veterans hall or church or wherever, baby stepping them with non-threatening disaster preparedness.  Then, because your reasonable rational persuasion is as effective as the authors, one is lead to believe, everyone will have a years supply of food and a garden and a surplus and then when an ER surgeon wanders down the village road everyone’s extra food supply will go a long way to wooing him into the warm bosom embrace of your group and everyone will life long and prosper, can I get an amen?  WOW!  I’ve seen less fanciful optimism in some of the worst post-apocalypse straight to kindle fiction books, better plans in some zombie genre books.  Someone seems to have forgotten that humans have a nature they are unable to contain.

*

Denying human nature is such a pervasive nation/global sport that I’m amazed we are all still alive.  Everyone seems to have a vested interest in living in their fantasyland bubble, preppers and prepper writers first and foremost.  Civilization is inherently far more brutally violent than hunter-gatherers ever were, but since less than one percent of our population serves in the military at any one time ( unlike the old school Industrial Age military with higher numbers.  And, no, this is not because of our wonderful high tech, exemplified by Windows computers, but because resource depletion leaves no alternative ), it is an easy and almost forgivable error to forget how important violence is to conducting our human affairs.  Unless you think you are smarter than everyone else, then you should know better and we shouldn’t be having this conversation.  But think about it for a few minutes.  Empires, founded with the advent of agriculture, must grow to survive.  Growth in time means collapse, a violent enough event ( but brutally whitewashed by prepper “experts” who think it is some kind of event only marginally more violent than visiting the Hood on Saturday night, but never fear since they will then be carrying their Super Duper Plastic Carbine Semi-Auto Wonder Death Ray gun ) in itself but for its existence violence is a daily affair hidden from the taxpayers and serfs in all but entertainment versions.

moore malthus

MOORE MALTHUS

Moore’s Law states that microprocessor computer power will double approximately every two years.  This observation was made about 1970 and has held true.  I remember reading something way back about the limits having been reached by the laws of physics or some such thing but didn’t pay it much mind.  And, obviously, they did something different so that today, even if the progression has slowed somewhat, for the common Joe Blow on the street just buying a machine for games and porn, it seems the equation is holding as computers just keep getting cheaper and better.  Now, obviously, no one thing such as packing more transistors on a chip is going to account for the price of a PC.  The Mac did nothing for lowering prices ( my first Mac was over three months wages, and that was as a manager of a gas station- not exactly white collar wages but certainly not minimum wage either ) but did make the computer more than just an accounting tool.  The Windows OS made computers cheaper just by focusing on average consumers rather than artists and professionals ( my Mac was probably way overpowered just for word processing but I did write most of my first newsletter on it ).  Recently, as Microsoft started melting into an irrelevant pile of crap, other operating systems injected some long absent competition into the market and knocked some damn sense into House Gates and PC’s halved in price.  Not that much of that is really all that important, from the perspective of the average buyer.  Not your hard core nerd programmer, your average person who devotes as much thought into the workings of a computer as they do a toaster.

*

And this article is indeed about both Uber-nerds, surgical taped eyeglasses, virgins but for their tech sector income, topic of most interest the processor speed of the newest skunk works offering, super dorks, as well as average marshmallow person, thirteen sports channel viewing, Obammy worshiping Sheeple.  It is my contention that Moore’s Law is the one thing most responsible for the complete lack of interest in resource depletion, climate change, sustainable living, decentralized living or any other topic outside “American Empire Uber Alles, fracking oil to the rescue, Kunstler’s Happy Motoring paradigm, business as usual and growth forever”.  Moore’s Law taught us, computer geek to bubblegum chewing mouth breather, that technology always advanced and tech always saved us ( forget that technology is just robots taking our jobs ) and since for forty-five years this has been true it will true forever and forever, amen and hallelujah.  If almost all of us seek the electric teet to shut out the real world, and electronics powered by Moore’s Law keep getting cheaper and better, our subconscious desire to live in our bubble world indirectly turns our reality into the world of Tron.  Even if you are well grounded in the real world, at the minimum you are fed a debilitating shred of a doubt that tech can actually save you regardless of what your primal reptilian brain is yelling at you.  Thanks, Moore, now far less of us want to know about Malthus.  But, hey, living a life on Facebook sure was fun as we all pretended to HAVE a life, right?

( note to computer nerds and geeks and other assorted goobers, this coming from a former D&D nerd until I got laid, get a friggin life if you start picking apart the small details here-in general, regardless of a missed date or other minor fact, I’m sure my analysis holds )

peak elvis

PEAK ELVIS

“Brace For Impact, Surviving The Crash Of The Industrial Age” by Thomas Lewis was a pretty good read.  While it didn’t give me personally much new information ( all of which I’d already gleamed from other sources ) I think others might benefit from it if you need the down low on resource depletion.  It doesn’t cover survivalism, though.  It is a “here is WHY” book only.  It was only $5 on Kindle and if you aren’t convinced on Peak Oil and the inevitability of the crash of the casino economy this book might change your mind.  Or, it might not.  It might better be described as a hymn to the choir.  As Tom pointed out, a passage in the book which stuck with me, far more Americans believe in extraterrestrials and Elvis still being alive than believe that we face any serious consequences economically in their lifetime.  You can read the facts like “six of the last eleven years has seen less global grain supply produced than was consumed” ( Diet For A Small Planet might help, or canceling the ethanol program, but the point is that overpopulation has already started to strain our food supply and the seemingly easy tweaks won’t solve the overall problem ) or the to me far scarier “due to falling production-their peak was 2003-and growing population Saudi Arabia will cease exporting oil to all other countries about 2022 due to domestic demand” ( in less time than from the financial crash to now, the Saudi spigot will be turned off for outside consumers.  And it doesn’t seem out Fracking supplies are quite enough to cover that.  Not only do we lose ten percent of imports immediately, other countries will divert their oil to better paying customers so that even if the Petro Dollar decline doesn’t bite us in the ass first, this will ) and if you won’t listen they are meaningless statistics.

*

If you take your head out of your ass long enough to stargaze the heavens looking for signs of life out in the universe, I suppose you don’t have time to contemplate your own back yard which is dying from lack of water and artificial fertilizers and can’t be cut as the gasoline is too expensive.  If you spend too much time listening to Elvis ( listening to music uses different facilities than reading, which is why I try to cut my exposure to music to almost nothing- not wishing to dull any analytic abilities ) and talking with your blog buddies over the real possibility he is still out there pretending to be an impersonator so he can still sing ( never mind he is like ninety years old or something ), you have no time to look at the economy past the stock market numbers and the Team Obammy official score card on unemployment.  The point is this.  While the odds of Elvis ever needing to disappear were small, the odds of him surviving are even smaller and yet the odds of another economic collapse are pretty much as high as you can get and people simply won’t see that.  They don’t want to so they don’t.  Folks aren’t all that stupid.  It takes some firing neurons to graduate college and attract an intelligent easy on the eyes spouse, to rear mostly functional children and keep gainfully employed.  It isn’t a question of intelligence.  It is a question of avoidance.  It is safe to talk about ET, as the odds are now good one won’t actually pop up at DC and demand world capitulation.  It isn’t so safe to think how a non-renewable resource will keep us safe and comfortable after it runs out.
