peev2c1

PEEv2c1
In 2013 I wrote the book “PEE”. Prepper Emergency Essentials. The title amused me, and it was an update to the 2006 book “Frugal Survivalism”. A completely different format, as I had less than zero desire to actually write that thing all over again ( that was one of the few I wrote INSTEAD of the blog, rather than part of the blog, and was a rather painful two months of work ). Well, lately as I've gotten a lot of newbies, these kinds of questions are being asked again. But the PEE book itself is in need of an update ( PS-the original is in BBBno1, free at my web site ).
*
More importantly, I'm simply tapped out on my normal “philosophy of Bison” types of articles, baffling BS to astound and titillate. The well is a bit dry. No worries, my loyal and generous minions. I always get that mojo back. It is just a temporary dry spell. So this will keep me out of the unemployment lines and I trust, you rather amused. I know most of you prefer the philosophy articles. I do too, as far too many survival publications repeat the rote, never daring to think too deep. I just have uninspired moments at times.
*
So you get “basics”. I'll try to keep it interesting, honest Injun. Here is the original version table of contents I'm duplicating:

1. Taste Fatigue
2. Buying Wheat
3. Storing Wheat
4. Grinding Your Grain
5. Water Filter
6. How Much Food Should You Store?
7. Survival Rifle
8. Fat
9. Location
10. Precious Metals
11. Post-Apocalypse Lighting
12. Manual Clothes Washing
13. Peak Oil
14. Top Ten List
15. Junk Land
16. Wool
17. Caches
*
Hopefully I won't need to run these all one after another, finding the inspiration for the normal articles in between. I'll try to keep these as interesting as I can.
*
Taste Fatigue
Ah, the dreaded taste fatigue. If we don't let Johnny eat a huge and varied variety he will simply stop eating and die, our beloved snot dripping moron departing this mortal coil. Sad Panda :( ! I don't know where this drivel started. I have a feeling it was mere corporate sponsored propaganda that was picked up as a meme by those unable to fathom a single moment in their pampered lives that had an iota of discomfort introduced in the glittery unicorn land they had carefully erected.
*
And speaking of erection, the whole concept of taste fatigue is a boner. Ever had a kid, or at least knew about one because your scurvy over educated ass would never dream about populating Gaia and hence denying a Diversity Rich immigrant from settling here, that went on a kick where they would only eat one thing ( I think this usually revolved around dreaded lips and bunghole meat tubes from Oscar Myer )? Kids don't die because they are only eating one food, YOU are dying because you have to listen to their incessant whining. Parents being played, how embarrassing.
*
During unemployment, I've eaten one thing. For a month I ate nothing but potatoes and margarine ( this was back when potatoes were one fifth the price [ and minimum wage was one half-nothing to see here with inflation and wage stagnation, move along. All is well ] and fake butter was far less putrid ). For a week, another time, it was nothing but rice. Another week, noting but Top Ramen. It was a time of stress, and I didn't much care about what I was eating. Sound familiar, come the collapse?
*
During times of disruption, peasants would be eating pretty much just gruel ( as do monks, even now ). And you don't even need to just eat just one thing. Even I don't JUST store wheat. But even if you did, so humping what? When the rubber actually hits the road, your pampered pathetic useless mouth breathing oxygen wasting putrid sack of meat will be so grateful for ANY food, first world problems will disappear quickly. The ONLY important thing on your mind will be food. ANY food. You have zero idea how import calories are, after living a life of luxury calories, literally fed by petroleum.
*
Do yourself a favor and do NOT get me started on Peak Oil. Fracking oil, which was well known to Hubbert by the way, will not keep the deep fried Twinkies rolling into the supermarkets. One day, and I DO actually hope that day never comes-but really, who are we actually kidding here-calories will be as dear to you then as taste is now. And we all know how dear taste is to you, because McDonald's is still open for business, even without offering the McRib. I haven't eaten at McDogCrap's for years, and even I would risk exposure to its third world citizens to get a McRib again.
*
I'm eating bacon right now, as I type this, and I'm drooling over a McRib. That is how sad our lives are. It is just programming, people, because nothing is as good as bacon. Except perhaps the tears of a liberal. And yes, I do actually have bacon for the apocalypse. A Dear Minion sent me a case a good number of years ago. I will NOT be sharing it, nor will I hesitate to waste ammunition defending it. You might feel the same way about your cans of Spam. Coffee, it goes without saying. But these are treats. Not daily requirements ( except coffee-DUH! ).
*
For almost twenty years, near enough to daily, I've eaten two meals a day of wheat ( I just had some before the bacon ). It isn't machismo or toughness or me being a super ninja survivalist. I LIKE whole wheat. After my mom went proto-Hippie on us in the early 70's, we ate a metric butt ton of whole wheat. Yours truly was there grinding it up on a Corona as soon as I was big enough. Whole wheat gives you real sustained energy.
*
It is dirt cheap. And it is delicious ( try the store bought, weaning yourself off some, then most white flour. But fresh, ground and then refrigerated and eaten in a few days flour tastes TWICE as good, AND your body craves it for the fresh ingredients ). Some days, yes, I am feeling lazy and don't want to prepare it, but once I start eating it I forget the PITA factor. I don't get tired of it. Dinner is enough variety, and surprisingly I get more tired of dinner than wheat. Trust me, if you are storing REAL food, not processed, taste fatigue will be minimal.
*
I'm not claiming it will be absent. But it will be a minor issue. I don't mean that because getting shot at is more important. I mean, you won't be anywhere near as concerned about taste fatigue as you think you will be now. Just as the politically motivated asswhores spread the rumor that men are pussies and don't REALLY want to kill, which is nonsense-that would not be a factor save cultural pressure-being afraid of not getting menu variety is merely a symptom of market conditioning and unrealistic expectations by the perpetually spoiled with luxury.
*
It will suck, but it won't be life threatening. Nothing too much more than, say, being cold as you pull a twelve hour patrol. The next time, you dress better ( as a minion said, from a Russian saying, there is no bad weather, just bad clothes ). You get a bit hateful of one food, you hunt a woodchuck or look for edible plants. It is JUST a discomfort. The only ONE item food diet is going to be long term food, anyway. The kids, and you, will get progressively more used to the approaching variety desert, as time passes and “civilized” food is used up.

barbarians and civilization 2

BARBARIANS AND CIVILIZATION 2
Chances are, you are already the new barbarian, and don't even know it. You like guns, don't you? You feel like you should fight anyone that endangers you or your family, don't you? Remember, civilized folks have a professional army and police force to protect the citizens. Who are NOT recognized, certified, trained professionals. Citizens are NOT granted the right to be armed, by the order of the king. That is how civilization works. Each insect is assigned a task, and works at it for the good of the hive. Armed farmers or workers are not allowed.
*
They are there to farm, or labor at other tasks. They are not there to fight. If they TRIED to fight, they would be endangering food production or vital strategic items from being manufactured. They don't know what they are doing on the battlefield. The soldiers are there to perform that task, and are equipped and trained for it. The above should remind you of a colony of bees, or an ancient society such as Rome. But doesn't it also remind you of the attitude of LibTards? “That gun isn't for hunting!'. Humping idiots.
*
Idiots? Or indoctrinated city subjects? We are after all, at heart, an Agricultural Empire ( all the theatrics over oil is just to cheaply feed the workers, and keep them distracted ). The flatland, once insanely fertile, supports a huge civilization. So much food was grown ( did you know that by 1870, the majority of factory goods were farm mechanization tools? ) we could have uncontrolled population increases here, AND feed a good chunk of the British empire ( not that Canada, Oz and Argentina didn't contribute equally-but they were not nearly as populated as we were ).
*
We are no where near as productive as we once were, grain displacing meat as a predominant calorie ( how much corn based sweetener does the average American consume, daily? ). Russia has surpassed us as the leading wheat exporter. We waste a good bit of corn in ethanol production. And immigration is bringing our population up far too quickly. What this has created is group conflict. Because groups do NOT wait until famine hits to become irrationally combative. It is a subconscious borg reaction to a reduction in surplus.
*
Don't misunderstand, this is one of many issues separating the population culturally. A lot was manufactured in Divide And Conquer. A lot has to do with economic contraction. Food is a pretty powerful motivator. Add that in with all the other issues and it gets ugly fast. Look how quick all but the protected classes of the Deplorables ( crackheads, homeless ) have been administratively removed from Food Stamps. Add in job displacement and it isn't hard to grasp certain classes being the next famine victims. Obviously, you arm up. Quick.
*
( Someone wrote-another blog, my apologies for not remembering-that on one day, Black Friday, more guns were sold than the Marine Corps has. It isn't a perfect indicator-most likely they went to families already well armed-but it is a pretty good one how outvoted the military can be ) But only the savages are armed, according to the civilized set. So the self-segregation continues, barbarians out of the city, and civilized folks flee TO the urban areas. See how the real estate prices mostly reflect this? It isn't JUST because the jobs are there.
*
It is also pricing out the barbarians. Like the rich haven't been doing this forever. But we aren't talking about enclaves for the rich, who own their own police departments. It is now entire states, or at least the important parts of the state ( in Nevada, for instance, only Vegas and Reno count. You know, the spots with the best water supply ). The Blacks and Mexicans still live there, in the least desirable spots, because both were used to drive out the barbarians, and because robots aren't available to serve the master class. No, not master race. The chosen class, those that are civilized. Unarmed. Compliant. Respectful of banker authority. Employed in the wealth extraction industry.
*
You can see how the Deplorables are delegated to the marginal land. The food desert Rockies are even celebrated by the better off Deplorables. Their military strategy is spot on-hold the mountains, for self defense. Too bad they also worship the Mammon and makes themselves dependent on it, living the soft marshmallow man lifestyle. Pretty sad barbarians, really. The depopulated grain states probably should not be a Deplorable destination-remember how the city holds the flatland. If you have few places to ambush, or retreat to, it isn't viable.
*
The southwest deserts are not a bad choice. The Apaches did a reasonable job keeping out the Mexicans, and nobody else wants the dump. The South is in general overpopulated, with foreign occupation forces, but if you know your area of operations there are plenty of hinterlands available for use. Just beware the civilized folks down below. They are good for raiding, not for living among. The Appalachian mountains go all the way up through YankeeLand. Same caveat as the South. Texans overrate their freedom and independence, and their capacity to feed too many people.
*
Distance is your enemy, without waterways, post-oil. But enough of that. Politics today are a good enough marker as to where you should relocate, if you are currently in a city and/or state run by communists. My point here today is that you are being pushed into a lifestyle of a barbarian, whether you realize it or not. If your area is defensible ( hills and mountains are your friend. Marginal soil can be built back up, just don't make the mistake of doing so in flatland. If centralized agriculture can be practiced there, you do NOT want it ), you can farm. But you're still a barbarian.
*
And this is a good thing. City slickers blow monkey balls. Their culture is that of insects. They live this way, gladly, for their portion of soy gruel. Thank you Sir, may we 'ave another?! You don't want to live like that. You want freedom, guns and BBQ. But here is the thing. Stop wishing to vote for those rights. That is what pussies on their knees do. Begging. One day, if you are a barbarian, you are going to have to fight. Not against the FedGov, or your duly fed appointed local gov, because that would be illegal. But after the zombie apocalypse, against the city folk and their civilization.

barbarians and civilization

BARBARIANS AND CIVILIZATION
There are basically two types of people, economically and culturally. Barbarians, and civilized folk. You could also think of them as City or Country. Of course, since civilization has all the surplus and luxury, time to fritter away on the backs of slaves, they write all the books and “civilized” folks are always portrayed ( well, for the most part. There are always books on “the noble savage”, vicariously allowing young boys and frustrated men a fantasy outlet ) as Super! To be civilized, in civilization, is part of the civic reward for being better than filthy scum out in the boonies.
*
Of course, this smacks on propaganda. It isn't just the normal good natured rivalry opposing groups always have. Jocks look at band nerds as geeks and freaks, and the goobers look down their nose at unintelligent and unrefined cavemen in sports attire. The Army looks at the Navy as a bunch of marshmallow men in orange juice squeezer hats, and the Jarheads look at the grunts as posers ( real men are issued rectal rods, one each, from our Glorious Corps, oo-rah ). No, city folk go out of their way to assure themselves how superior they are, almost to the point of me-thinks they protest too much.
*
City folks are overcompensating, giving virtue to vice, as they celebrate their sloth and luxury. Today, the “metro-sexuals” bask in their feminine grooming habits. In Rome, the norm was to be clean shaven and there was a stigma attached to oral sex ( it was thought that men were acting feminine if they performed oral sex on females. Contrast this with the modern biker gang member earning his Red Wings after he performed the act on his girlfriend while she was menstruating-of course, I had to try that after reading up on it. No biggie, just a bit salty ).
*
The attitude that a females pleasure wasn't important, and the extraordinary grooming strike me as unnecessary machismo. A man comfortable in his role as warrior and protector need not put up such false airs. And before you say it, my beautiful hair is not excessive grooming. I cut it once a week, and then there is no extra cleaning products or incessant combing. My sleek perfect hair is LESS maintenance, not more. Shaving my face is also less, rather than more. Three times a week shaving and there is no liquid or food to constantly remove from a beard. Plus, those suckers itch!
*
Don't take the above as me assuming I am a barbarian. I know better, having had a soft life, at least physically. I only make the distinction from city slickers in my attitude. I know I'm a pussy, and hate it. They love being squishy in body and mind. They want to kowtow to their women and former slaves ( and imported farm implements ). As much as I do not share in their attitudes, the celebration of weakness as a virtue, is simply what citizens do. That is how they were raised, and cannot help it. On the other hand, barbarians are raised to be savages ( to the mind of the civilized ones ).
*
Each group is raised in a culture that works for the group, making it stronger. City dwellers, which I include farmers in the hinterlands as part of, as they live in the agricultural system supporting those of the city, are civilized because of centralized agriculture. Barbarians may or may not farm, but they are of a decentralized system. The main difference is not in what they eat, but in their government and military structure assuring HOW they eat. Cities have standing armies, and permanent farmers. Country folk are all in the military, both fighting and farming.
*
Barbarians belong to a tribe, all men warriors ( NO! A thousand times, NO!, Natural Geographic and Hollywood, bitches were NOT warriors. Amazons were a myth, unless they are companies sending you books ) who followed the most qualified warrior to lead them. Citizens belong to a state, being whatever profession the king decides ( barbarian kings proved themselves, civilized kings were born to rule ). By force of arms, barbarians had a vote. By lack of arms, the majority of civilized men were almost slaves.
*
Now, clearly, even as I'm being critical of citified, centralized, unfree society, I know there isn't much choice in the matter. If you seize the low ground that comprises the best agricultural land, you have to have standing armies ready to protect that land from other standing armies ( and, it shouldn't have to be said, also go to seize other peoples land once you ruin your soil, which you will, as you must feed the army even in times of failing crops ). You cannot feed excess people unless you have a division of labor, and that leads to class and hierarchical rule.
*
Barbarians, by definition, are relegated to marginal land. They don't have the numbers to fight large standing armies. Being on marginal land, you cannot feed excess people. Which means the farmers ( or hunters or herders ) must also be fighters. Which means there cannot be extra mouths to feed such as miners, or full time craftsmen. The women do some of the crafts, on a cottage level ( city tradesmen can work on a more industrial level, with slave/apprentice labor ). Those already farming and practicing for war must also be craftsmen, largely in war material.
*
As with everything, it comes down to food. Civilized societies must be subservient and compliant, as they are part of a large machine designed to farm big and fight big. Barbarians must do everything themselves, and a large machine would hinder them. The restrictions and freedoms have nothing to do with politics or choice but with how they have to be fed. Neither group is right or wrong, but following necessity.
*
And before anyone gets stupid on me, no, you can't have the choice farmland AND be free. You want to be a freeman and retain the right to be armed, you'll need to go to the marginal land in the hills. Flatlanders are serfs, not because of right but because of might. Do NOT be where the good farm land is if you want to be free. Just because you could do so during the Carbon Fuel Age doesn't mean it is feasible in any other era. Tomorrow, I'll cover the trends underway in breaking up the country along urban civilization and rural barbarians. It isn't a perfect analogy, because Oil Age, but it is the start of the trend.

more digital illusions 2

MORE DIGITAL ILLUSIONS 2
A lot of Optimistic Ollies think that we are in some kind of technological utopia. Typically, they keep asking Krumpus for a FLIR scope for Christmas, and I think this is a very dangerous game to be playing. You piss that dude off and he is going to Disappear you. Technologically, we have not advanced past the moon landing. All the crap we had then, we have now, and nothing more advanced. It is improved, but it isn't new, exciting or innovative. Hell, I think we even had sharks with laser beams on their heads back then.
*
Don't get me wrong. Compared to dial up modems and floppy discs, we ARE in the golden computer age. Adjusted for inflation, the cheapest computer for personal desktop use is about 10% of what it cost in the last millennium. But none of the technology is NEW. Improved is not new. Fracking for oil might be improved, but it is nearly a century old technology. Can we PLEASE stop acting like AI and self driving cars are mere months away? They keep promising nuclear fusion, any day now, and it is in the dustbin along with flying cars and Meal In A Pill.
*
Artificial Intelligence. From a bunch of idiots who cannot even use their biological computer to any good effect. Sure. Let me contact my Vegas bookie for those odds. The eggheads in the labs all think Fracking Forever and Gore Warming, Political Correctness and The Big Bang Theory ( I mean, sure, it is better than NO theory, but not by a wide margin ). We got almost all of our technology from Nazi's, under Operation Paperclip, and I'm pretty sure they screwed us on vital details.
*
Wouldn't you, if you were a Slave Scientist? Cooperate just enough to stay out of jail, and you were able to enjoy the wonders of Spam and NBC TV, instead of Bratwurst and opera. Gee, what a deal. Although, I have doubts the Germans were too involved in computers, having little military application ( they didn't need a computer for artillery projectile calculations, having both better cannon and soldiers who knew what they were doing. That was what we used our first computer for, by the way ). High tech in the military is no substitute for skill and intelligence.
*
Not that this stopped us from trying. As our industrial capacity for dumb munitions faltered, the military was already into high tech munitions during Vietnam. Probably the Air Force, a bunch of techno-weenies whose primary duty was to outspend the Navy on shiny munitions delivery vehicles. The Nazi's primary advancement was not in high tech so much as it was in the ability to apply any technology in new ways. They could jettison old ways of waging war, far better than their enemies. Who, let us note, never advanced beyond fighting the Civil War. We take the latest and greatest technology, then apply it to primitive industrial warfare fighting. And are shocked when it doesn't perform.
*
Who could EVER have seen that coming? High tech does NOT save money, or resources. Like all robots, or automation, or labor saving devices, it only minimizes the reliance on personnel. It is a lazy way of doing anything, and the cost, besides monetary, is increased vulnerability. The old joke used to be, “works much better, until it breaks”, but now, the crap simply isn't working. Low quality Chinese crap programmed by low quality ( dot ) Indian programmers. But it sure saves on labor!
*
We are too ignorant as a society, too lazy culturally, blinded by hubris and indoctrinated rather than educated, and we can't produce AI. We can't even make dependable infrastructure to support its components. What makes anyone think that this mess of our computing communications infrastructure can adequately support cryptocurrencies? The machines and workers for it are substandard. Even if all the parts work, there are other issues such as Chinese computer chip security, normal hacking concerns, and even reliable electrical service.
*
If anyone who followed the news and learned about Northern California turning off its electricity two weeks at a time still thinks computer networks are a viable tool, I don't imagine anything is going to wake you up out of your happy unicorn delusional fantasy. Who the hell needs a solar flare or an EMP when our electrical networks can't keep the juice flowing in “normal, non-Spicy” times? And you want to have your money tied into that grid? It isn't bad enough we can barely trust paper currency ( since they all, always, revert to what they are actually worth )? You want machines running The Blue Screen Of Death to control and safeguard your savings?
*
And that isn't even touching on the dependability of the organizations issuing such currency. One crypto company went bankrupt after a hacking attack. So much for a “secure” currency. Take a look at drug cartels, one of the best organizations around living in a harsh unforgiving Darwin environment. Are they using crypto's? If they are so great defeating the government, why aren't the cartels using them? I'm also of the mind the strong possibility of our government funding the whole crypto thing to begin with, but that is me being paranoid.
*
Even if the NSA doesn't have access to the things, complete data tracking, the Chinese are most likely can hack the hell out of them. In fact, China has outlawed crypto's, and I don't think it is because “they can't control them”. They can't exactly control cash or bullion, either, insofar as taxes or creation. Perhaps they also think the US intelligence services are involved. Or, they just view them as Ponzi schemes, get rich quick hucksters feeding on fears of fiat currency and the erroneous over reliance on technology. I could be wrong. As I said, I simply don't know a lot about them, other than enough to distrust them.
*
And what is all this inflated pricing? Is this a currency, or a penny stock? Is this a new way of holding wealth, or a new Pets Dot Com? It sure seems like a new Greater Fool Investment pyramid scheme to me. Again, I only know enough to be cautious. I'm not trying to hold on to my buggy whip as Ford covers the roads with that horseless carriage. I'm saying, with no new technology in fifty years, this just seems like a lot more VaporWare nonsense.
*
I'd rather hold my wealth in depreciating dollars, a currency very soon destined to languish in Hell with The Continental, the Zimbabwe and Confederate Dollar and the Iraq Dinar, than to trust crypto's. Fiat currency is always a promise you cannot trust, but at least you can hold them in hand for as needed, instead of relying on already oft proven unreliable digital illusions.

I don't think I've talked about cryptocurrencies for some time. But I'm seeing people I normally trust with economic advice advocate them. Which I guess makes sense, as almost nobody links economics to energy, mores the pity. Let me just ask you a question up front, to give you a sense of where I stand. Do you keep money in your wallet or in a bank? It is as simple as that. Do you want tangible assets or a promise of payment? I don't pretend to know the first thing about crypto's. I do know that you are trusting a computer to make good on your savings.
*
Am I the only one that watched “2001, A Space Odyssey”? When HAL won't open the pod bay doors, you are double dog dingus humped. Anyone, anyone at all, “Terminator”? Skynet thinks you are a danger. Why would it give you money to buy explosives to breech its processor core? Am I being silly? Really? You aren't supposed to take those threats literally. Stanley Kubrick was, how does one put this? Bat crap weird. Who the heck knows what was going on in his head. And Terminator was sci-fi HORROR.
*
Horror, that genre full of improbables such as TV's swallowing kids and Freddie Krugers from Hell. I think the rise of evil computers in the movies and such genres as cyberpunk didn't mirror fears of AI out of control ( I'll return to that steaming lump of dung in a bit ), but man's misuse of technology, as all his tools have been used. And let us not forget, the first, best, and ONLY Terminator movie ( #2 was mere action, however good that was on its own ) was more about the horror of nuclear annihilation than it was about AI Gone Wrong.
*
Damn, it HAS been thirty years since the threat of global thermonuclear war has subsided, hasn't it? As long as I've been alive, over half that span has been WITHOUT the threat of dying from the retards pushing the red button. And yet, that threat was a very real thing to anyone over about 45 years of age now. I think it was THE threat, surpassing all others exponentially. Gore Warming, by comparison, is a stupid and retarded threat ( which might explain why the younger set worry about that much more than the older folks-these kiddies have no sense of REAL terror. Same with the low information voters that think Habeeb is a real threat ).
*
And don't think for a second that we never experienced nuclear war because the weapons “were too terrible to imagine using”. What a bunch of ignorant babble that is. We gladly used then on the slant eyes, both because we hated Ornamentals and because we were letting Stalin know that he was a pussy and we could kill far more folks than he ever imagined, and that it was Cold War On, Like Donkey Kong.
*
We had upper military management chomping at the bit to use nukes in Korea, after we experienced a bit of embarrassment when a bunch of rice eaters almost kicked our asses, we glorious WWII victors. Now that simply wouldn't send the right message to the rest of the world we were colonizing, would it? The exact same strategy we used in WWII, human wave assaults ( only more successful than Russia because we were much better equipped ), was used by Chinese peasants, and our glorious Techno-Military almost lost. Nuke them for their brazen insubordination!
*
We had oodles and gobs of tactical nuclear weapons, artillery rounds equipped to nuke the Soviets should they be so bold as to want our slice of Europe. It was doctrine, NOT defending American soil, to use nukes. The Army, snorting too much radiation, wanted to use nukes mining a base on the moon ( nukes were seen as a potentially nifty engineering tool by the Corps Of Engineers. Luckily for us, they focused on waterways up and down our major rivers. Or, unlucky, as the under maintained former glorious works are failing ).
*
And I would wager a jelly filled donut that there was talk of nuking someone recently, even groups under nation state size. I'd imagine the only reason we didn't is that, like most military equipment we cannibalize most to keep a few running, we didn't have many to spare. Our inventory is probably shrinking due to dismantling the very industry that used to manufacture the things. My point is, we never had a problem wanting to use them, again. We just didn't want to deal with the trouble retaliation would cause. Are the Hampton's downwind from a target? That would explain the bankers reluctance. Remember, they took over running the government from the military industrial complex.
*
Should we still be frightened of nuclear war? I view it as I did back then. It is such a huge potential threat, that there really isn't much you can realistically do. A fallout shelter is great for that initial radiation. Then, what do you do as all the crap in the atmosphere works around the world back to you? Who is going to stay in a shelter THAT long? Then there is the nuclear winter. Which is just theory, granted, but it makes sense. If one volcano can cause a drop in solar input, what about thousands of widespread fires, and tens of thousands of piles of dirt being thrown up into the atmosphere?
*
Granted, the global stockpile shrank from seventy thousand total in the 1980's to under four thousand today ( and the peak was my genius moment to join the military ). The danger is drastically reduced, even if a total war. But you can see why the 80's was a time of such brilliant movies reflecting the fear of nuclear war, such as Terminator and Road Warrior ( Oz wasn't touched, seems to be the implication, other than the oil not being shipped in ).
*
You see a lot of commentary on the cyberpunk movement dying at the same time as the Soviet Union. I never delved deeply into the genre, although the few I read I enjoyed such as Neuromancer and Snowcrash. Was a theme the crash of nations due to the Cold War, and the rise of corporations to replace them? No idea. At the time I was more focused on Libertarian science fiction. I still don't think anyone has ever done better ( not even the same author ) than “The Probability Broach” for imagining a free society.
*
Wow, I don't think I've ever veered off so far from the basic subject matter. The way I look at it, a bonus for you all, extra material. Tomorrow we continue, hopefully touching on cryptocurrencies at least occasionally.
[ addendum: after I wrote the above, I viewed a decent cyberpunk documentary HERE .  It didn't really answer my question, but it was enjoyable ]

urban cattle 3

URBAN CATTLE 3
I think a lot of people now prefer the suburbs to the country, or the city. You avoid the danger of the city proper ( not that suburbs are completely safe, the comparison is relative ), but you avoid people, mostly. Each little domicile ship is adrift in a fleet, no others daring to board a smaller boat to intrude on your existence. When not safely cocooned in their own little universe of the suburban McMansion, they are safe in their car ( the real reason no one will give them up, as they are a security blanket ), tucked away snug in their Happy Place. If circumstances force social interaction, such as the grocery store, they cocoon in their Dumb Phone.
*
The alienating factor of the suburbs Kunslter bemoans is the exact reason folks are attracted. People don't want to socialize, because we don't have any tribe anymore. They are strangers, and as hundreds of thousands of years of hunter-gathering ( and proto-villages dedicated to beer manufacturing ) existence have hard wired into our pea brains, Stranger is Danger. Now, I'll be the first to admit, family, nine times out of ten, sucks bloated plague ridden donkey scrotum.
*
Family feels the license to use you, lie to you, treat you like dirt and then they feel justified in doing all that AGAIN, because you hurt their feelings by not accepting that and refuse to return for another helping of fecal sandwich. “WELL! I never! What's her problem? Family is supposed to help each other out” she said, after “forgetting” to pay back a loan, and then asking for another one. Yeah, family sucks. But they only treat you like that because they have a fall-back of Uncle Sugar if you disown them.
*
When there was no welfare, your family was THE only safety net, and you never burnt that bridge. Not that welfare in and of itself is bad. I have an issue with the federal government who let a lot of folks die from malnutrition during the Great Depression, then turned right around and expected everyone to die to fight for the bankers rights to profit ( while true that without the war the Depression never would have ended, the Federal Reserve being created caused the Depression ). You can offer welfare while leaving the family strong. Or not, as ours was structured.
*
The problem wasn't welfare in and of itself, but rather welfare made for the exact purpose of destroying the family. Blacks and Hispanics retain family ( although the Black ones changed into a matriarchy ) despite welfare because of the open hostility of the surrounding society. Whites have only recently been turned on and have not developed a cultural response, yet ( it was Trojan Horse'ed in as benefits, while Whites had no PERCEIVED enemies ). Whether there will be time for that is an open question. I think not. But my timing has sucked before.
*
Without family, urban life isn't such a bad deal. You are already alone. The city gives the illusion of companionship, even if everyone is selfish and platitudes abound. Any illusion is better than reality. And despite how much it cost to live there, by being in the city your personal economy crashes LAST. I don't think it is the job situation as much as the fact that any rural area ONLY offers poverty ( as the wealth is stolen by the city ), where in the city your poverty is not quite as bad. You have the glittery unicorn illusion of being LESS screwed.
*
And then there are sunk costs, every penny, regardless of income, going to support yourself living in the city. There is nothing to save, so as to escape. You have to convince yourself that staying is a good thing, as if you had a choice. Poverty is easier in the country, because it is actually feasible to live on nearly zero. In the city, who either spend everything scraping by, or live homeless. In the country, you can invest in living on nearly nothing, if you can escape the zoning and regulation police. In the city? It is too easy to get caught, if you even have the option of opting out of ANY monopoly service.
*
The suburbs DEMAND a middle class income. The city DEMANDS a middle class income, even if that only buys a poor boys standard of living. In both cases, you are demonstratively employed and of the preferred socio-economic class. Why would you WANT to move to a rural area and send the signal you want to be poor? Women are VERY class conscience, as they move UP, unless they can't. Now do you wonder why the wife won't move out to the country with you? It isn't about “roughing it”, it is about social standing.
*
Not to say men can be any better. They might simply assume your sweet ass is going to leave them, trading up. Then, they don't want to trade DOWN, in your replacement. They can be just as shallow with money. But it isn't greed. It is peacock feathers. Let's face it, city or rural living isn't about much of anything important, except monkey hierarchy. Which is the ONLY important thing, to most folks. People do live dangerously, to position advantageously socially. That is just the way the Monkey Brain rolls.
*
As you can see, it isn't any ONE thing, but many different factors, causing the cattle to stampede into urban areas. Or, same difference, make them want to stay. It has nothing to do with a cost benefit calculation according to collapse danger. If the cost is too great, they just recalculate the danger downward. Look, nothing to see here! Fracking is approved by the federal government, so it must be good for us! Can we have some Fuki radiation you no longer monitor for, also? Yummy! Why, I trust whatever the government tells me because they are my friend! Why, I imagine that diversity is my strength.
*
Exactly. WHY? Dumb ass. You just want to stay in the city because some schmuck in rural land is subsidizing your job ( if they don't like it, let them eat crack cocaine! ), making you feel superior as if you had anything to do with that wealth pump. All of America used to be that pump, but fifty years of Not Winning has narrowed it down to approved sanctuary cities. Enjoy your choice, but don't expect it to last. The rurals will survive, not because they are superior or better ( ALL cultures view themselves as such ), but because they are collapsing now and avoiding the rush. Enjoy your Starbucks!

urban cattle 2

URBAN CATTLE 2
I didn't mean to leave you scratching your head yesterday, trying to appear smarter than I am by throwing up a conundrum. It was just another way of saying, “confirmation bias”. We “creatively interpret” reality to fit into our world view. And really, I think this is natural. We can't be a steely eyed unthinking robot sentinel, always alert for danger. Nor can we ignore the day to day living reality of feeding and protecting family and tribe by filling our heads with mental masturbation trying to answer all of life's unanswerable questions. We rely on others in both cases.
*
What good is society if it cannot protect you, both physically and by providing a solid worldview? I think that is the main reason I now detest both my government and half the people in this country benefiting from that government. The job of our government, ANY government, any nation, is to protect you and your family in exchange for your work and sacrifice. A half million dead veterans are tossing in their graves, their sacrifices made so that the ruling class can screw us through Political Correctness. It isn't about race or gender, but about tribe, and the government is no longer part of that.
*
Anyway, by sacrificing for the tribe, the tribe protects you, a sum greater than its parts. By finding what works for the group, and turning that into a culture, a person is protected without needing to always figure things out for themselves. They just blindly follow group dictates, and then it does NOT matter if you are blinded by confirmation bias or any other mental illness that matter today only because we have no unified tribe or culture right now. The city is one kind of tribe, and all their very bizarre behavior is tribal, as is the Rurals.
*
We aren't just asking urban dwellers to give up their tribe, to move to our perception of safety, we are assuming they COULD do so. What we see as dysfunctional behavior is normal for them ( and the other way around, obviously ). We point fingers at urbans and laugh uproariously, mocking all their behavior, but they aren't OF our tribe, are they? We think they are misinformed Americans, but they are a different tribe living in America. And those tribes self segregated. One has to wonder if preppers in the city even could move.
*
A city prepper has more excuses than Carter has liver pills ( which, obviously, pretty much kept him alive forever ). Could the real reason be that he feels more comfortable in the city, in that culture? Instead, they make up excuses. Well, I do declare, that them thar fracking oil is set to last purt near forever, I tell you what! Or, family is here. Or, money. Please understand, I'm not judging. I'm not declaring my voice the only correct one. I'm saying, giving our propensity AWAY from logic, the collapse danger is NOT looked at in anything other than an emotional lens.
*
As anyone who has read me for any amount of time knows, I am ALL about justifying my doom and gloom. I have a hundred and one reasons to panic, and I want you along for that entertaining ride. Now, how much of that is sound logical thinking, and how much of that is self justification, excusing past decisions? If I didn't think the collapse was eminent, I couldn't be excused for not living near family. If I wasn't preparing, if I didn't have an EMOTIONAL reason for prepping ( fear, which is rarely logical ), I couldn't excuse abusing former spouses.
*
All that is just to underline that when I point out the illogical reason of city dwellers for staying, I also recognize my own illogical decisions. And, in my defense, most spouses gave as good as they got, so there is that. All I'm doing here is trying to understand, not place blame or mock others. I think a huge issue in a lot of preparedness plans is the inability to judge ones own blind spots. Not to blame ones self but to work around the issue. If you are city folk, you might just need to forget a hermitage in the middle of nowhere and move to a small town.
*
When the Social Engineers had so much success pulling their levers to control people ( the Wizard Of Oz was NOT a child's book as much as it was social commentary ), taking away gold, guns and God, taking away Demon Rum, taking away free speech, taking away states control, banning isolationism, they obviously had good reason to suspect they would always be successful at it. They had stole most family farms, making a profit on it as a bonus, why not also kill the very family, shades of Stalinism.
*
FDR might not have been Uber-Evil, just “quasi-evil” ( thank you, Dr. Evil, some of the funniest comedy since Animal House, THE gold standard, and sadly, about the funniest since ), but he had a lot of like minded evil dudes behind him helping a brother out. The death of the family farm was the first shot against the people, and next up was Social Security. I'm really surprised they never got into state run nurseries as the next step. Without a farm to run, after the necessity of the Great Depression requiring doubling and tripling up on living arrangements in the factory towns, the three generation household had little reason to endure.
*
But now that grandpa was free to rot in his own mobile home in Florida, the giant engineering feat of draining the entire state of swamps and paving it over a giant retirement home manufactured from whole cloth ( look at a US map. NO other state has that kind of coastal mega-city urban zone build up. Not California, not Jersey, not Long Island ), that only left two generation homes. Which were under assault from Industrial Age economics anyway. Just to be sure, Bitches Lib cut the nuclear family off at its knees, eliminating traditional marriage and child rearing and any family unity.
*
Now folks had to look at other groups for family. And tribe, since the government was clearly the enemy now ( except to those who made it theirs, in exchange for victim money bribery ). People quickly took advantage of the Supreme Court taking away representation from rurals at the voting booth, and even formed a tribal unity with their city, both as a reward mechanism and as a defense against the hatred and resentment against them from the disenfranchised rurals. To call Las Vegas a part of Nevada, for instance, is ludicrous. They are merely a wealth pump using the rest of the state, not of the state.
*
I laugh at the Libertardians living in Las Vegas, authors who come to mind being Vin Suprynowicz ( Shotgun News columnist and 90's militia porn writer. Black Arrow being a brilliant contribution ) and J Neil Schulman ( Rainbow Cadenza-he just died, to no reports. I had no idea until just now ). They are living in the least free area of the state, a state which has a sordid history of coasting on prior achievements, one being that they were ONCE Libertarian ( a few RINO governors killed off that past ), and the area is blessed economically by rural rapine.
*
Sorry, but yeah, don't get me started on ex-wives or most voters in cities. Let's just cut it off here and continue tomorrow.
