rodney king collapse 2 of 2

RODNEY KING COLLAPSE 2
Not only do I hate post apocalypse fiction that tries to teach that Oil Age skills are applicable after the collapse, I really dislike those tales that attempt to portray People As Good.  Let me repeat for the several hundredth time.  Your tribal members are good and you treat them morally.  Those not in your tribe are subhuman and not worthy of your ass crack sweat while they die of thirst.  That doesn’t mean I advocate for torture or inhumane treatment of slaves, just as I wouldn’t want to mistreat animals that provide me with yummy steaks.
*
It means that you never, ever, never in your ( post-apocalypse ) life do anything that would endanger your own tribe while interacting with another.  When you think you can buy Gods love by donating food to starving refugees, in effect you are condemning your family and friends and tribe to eventual hunger and starvation because food surplus is Now, not post-Now, and if you can’t accept that not only would I not want you in my tribe I would also hunt you down and kill you after you were kicked out of it.  You Gott Damn Ignorant Slut!  You stupid pigheaded moron!
*
Feeling bad for people suffering is fine.  As long as they are YOUR people.  Feeling bad for non-tribe members is okay, as long as you don’t help them when resources are scarce.  Oh, we have plenty of food stores, and they are starving children! You have a surplus now, true, granted, okay.  In a year, when the harvests are smaller than expected, suddenly you have a shortfall.  Now you have condemned your own people to suffer so you could temporarily feel good about yourself now.  You put a gun to your children’s head and played Russian Roulette.
*
But you felt better about yourself!  Have you even heard about being a parent?  Their job is to suffer for their children.  Did you not get that memo during the four to six months of almost zero sleep as the whiny creature kept crying their damn fool head off all night long?  The kid doesn’t do a damn thing but eat and grow and soil itself and you, it has excess energy to cry 24/7 because the ingrate puke is pissed you exited it from that warm and dark cesspit you call your wife’s womb.  So repeat after me.  It doesn’t friggin matter what makes you feel good.  It matters what is better for the child.
*
Being selfish about your child’s welfare and not giving a crap about strangers is part of your job. And that extends to the tribe as a whole because their sum is greater than their parts and you can’t survive without them ( this doesn’t necessarily invalidate hiding alone during the collapse if that increases your odds, as long as you believe it probable that you will have the necessary entrance fee to join a tribe afterwards ).  That doesn’t mean you abuse strangers, it means you turn your back by necessity.
*
Feeding strangers is stupid.  And so is not acting like every other tribe is out to destroy you and your family.  You can have alliances and peace.  But if you ever act like that is a lasting arrangement, you are endangering your tribe.  Because even if you don’t double cross them for a positive profit/loss equation, they will turn on you if it helps them more than it hurts them.  There is never a peace, there are only periods between conflict.  And if you are not acting like that is the case, you will be the loser.
*
Just look at the US military.  It is a welfare program for corporations  interests and the bankers that finance that corporate pay.  There is no actual conventional military deterrent possible between the weapons that cost a lot but don’t work and the politically correct social engineering.  The only thing keeping us from being attacked is a nuclear arsenal, and even that is being sacrificed on the altar of PC Profits.  That is NOT how you run a tribe, at the expense of all for the profit of a few.  You must act as if there is always going to be an enemy more powerful than you, not less.
*
And you must act as if they will always be ready to attack you.  Now apply that to everything.  The food that will feed you, the safe zones surrounding you, the ore or other natural resources you need.  You need to think about today, but also twenty years from now.  What if your birth rate drops?  What if the tribe next door attacks their enemy and doubles in size suddenly?  What if they attack for no good reason other than stupidity or greed or desperation?
*
Cooperation with your enemy is counter productive long term.  Why?  Because humans are no better than wild animals, species survival wise.  The group that populates to get a resource first wins.  Then they overpopulate and die. Your tribe will eventually perish from resource scarcity.  Your job is to postpone that as long as possible.  And cooperation with other tribes is NOT on the menu.  Because he who controls the resources wins. NOT he who shares them.  That is what war is all about.  A group of fifty battles another group of fifty for control of the resources that can feed eighty.
*
Did you get that math?  There is never enough ( long term ) for two groups cooperating.  There is only enough for one group to have a surplus after destroying another group.  And you always need a surplus, because Crap Happens.  Like a sudden crop failure or some of the herd gets Hoof And Mouth disease, or whatever.  You also need a surplus to breed extra providers and fighters, to keep that surplus, add to it and protect it.  Who the crap would want to share the surplus when doing so empties the pantry you have set aside for a rainy day fund?
*
Not being aggressive, not being selfish, not being greedy, those are the hallmarks of a successful tribe.  That is a cooperative group.  BUT THAT ONLY WORKS WITHIN THE GROUP!!!!  Not outside it.  That is anti-biology.  Bitches not breeding because they don’t feel like it, because they want to be independent of the Phallocracy, that is anti-biology.  Not going to war because there just doesn’t seem to be a need for it right now-against the groups interest.  Not killing the enemies children and women and old people-not only long term cruel because they will starve anyway, but also endangering to your own tribe if you aren’t hard enough to get the job of survival done.
*
Not beating your own kid until he grows a nutsack and hardens up to be a warrior?  You are working against the interests of your group.  Not beating the wife as she gets uppity, sowing discontent and disunity?  Selfish and dangerous.  We are all selfish and self centered right now.  To be otherwise endangers our own survival today.  Just beware that is anti-tribal behavior and you’ll have no choice but to change soon enough, as tribes become the survival mechanism.  Hippie Hugs, Peace and Getting Along are fine for the nation state.  Not for a decentralized tribe surrounded by danger.

rodney king collapse 1 of 2

RODNEY KING COLLAPSE
I’m going to briefly mention the TV show “Walking Dead”, but as an example.  This is not a review per se or an acknowledgement that the program is anything other than mindless entertainment with the occasional nugget of Prepper Wisdom thrown in.  The problem with the show is that there are SOOOOoooooo many pieces of crap disguised as survivalism that they will all get you killed before the nuggets come in handy.  Mostly, you watched the show, if you ever did, just for the anthropology.  The human interaction dynamics.  How the other asshats would treat you and what to expect.  Okay, spoiler alert for season eight ( the one new on Netflix ).
*
Thank all the gods that Carl the main guy Rick’s son was killed off.  Helping some stranger.  The message was, hey, I was being a decent human being and treating others well and he turned out to be a doctor so, yeah, me, and You Go Girl on diversity is our strength.  I’ve always hated that whiny petulant little humper.  He has annoyed me from day one.  Well, most characters do.  They are all so friggin stupid that you want them all to die.  But Carl annoyed me the most, so good riddance you twat.  Prior to getting back on grid and Netflix, I had been buying the series on DVD’s.  I had a lot of money invested in the show, and so I took these kinds of things personally.
*
Rick tried to tell Carl that Tribe Comes First.  The little butt wipe was never listening.  So his stupid ass got bit, which is great.  I suppose that viewers could take away either lesson.  Darwin Rules, or He Was A Better Person And Sacrificed Himself.  Yet to me, and granted this just might be me, it seems that this season the show finally Jumped The Shark.  It used to allow valuable lessons to be learned, by characters dying and teaching the others.  This was what attracted me to it.  How warring societies acted.  How tribalism was going to work out through war and scarcity.  This season though, it seemed to have veered into just propaganda.  Left propaganda.
*
The show was always stupid about Political Correctness, I grant you.  Bitches Be Warriors being the primary sin.  Instead of keeping the females safe to breed, they were risking their lives. Then, the group takes on strangers to keep their numbers up.  That is exactly the wrong answer long term.  And yes, I know this is just the immediate aftermath and the dynamics will be different, but it was the over the top Grrrl Power bullcrap I’m talking about.  I accepted that because the other Life Lessons were interesting.  Like, how the groups fed themselves ( never adequately explained although touched on ) or how they came up with devious methods of combating each other.  It was just food for thought, even if very lacking in nutrients.
*
Yet this season just got extra stupid on almost everything.  They just stood there and auto-fired.  All the time.  At very short distances.  And didn’t hit a thing.  Hell, one zombie is ten yards away.  And they give him a burst.  ONE friggin zombie.  No threat.  Meah, what’s another three to five cartridges, right?  As they stand around complaining about ammo running low.  Was this just trying for a little sizzle to titillate the GameBoys watching the show?  Was this what was going to pass for action from now on?  And then Neegan’s ( spelling? ) group has the Braniac making ammo for them as if it is all some mystery how to load the things but the reloading components were no big deal.
*
That was one reason I was thinking the LefTards had hijacked the show.  They almost seem to be highlighting how evil full auto plastic guns are, because they think they are magic.  They don’t understand tactics or logistics.  They just know Evil Weapons in the hands of Righteous Folks In Charge is good, but otherwise only Bad Dirt People having them is terrible and taking them away makes everything okay.  You don’t need logic or intelligence to be a Left-ee, just indoctrination.  Is this why we’ve been seeing the recent acts where the surrounded soldiers ALWAYS lay down their arms and surrender?  Seems symbolic.
*
Who the hell thinks it is a good idea to surrender when you are going to get killed or tortured, and not in that order?  But all the time, “ooooh, we are surrounded.  We must give up!”.  Tell me that isn’t poorly done propaganda.  Give up your guns and give up trying to fight.  And then when you do, despite all logic that the only way to treat you, in the absence of a slave market, is to kill you because we are out of food ourselves, they always have a Happy Ever After ending.  Bah!  But let me return to the main topic of this post.  All through the season they kept pounding in the message that Can’t We All Just Get Along?  You know, Rodney King stupid ass crap.
*
Carl got bit after he refuses to believe you only help your own, never others outside the tribe.  And then, after enduring a few weepy episodes all about what a perfect and swell guy Carl was ( despite being a moron and NEVER listening to his elders ), the rest of the season we get to listen to the letters Carl wrote to everyone telling them all how they needed to stop fighting each other and make peace and get into a big group hug.  And in the end, because Our Hero’s were trying to live up to the gospel according to Saint Carl, the Amazon Bitches joined in the righteous fight and once again the females came to the rescue ( using upper body strength weapons, naturally! ) and saved all the puny unworthy males that they only listened to if they were sensitive and shared their feelings.
*
Besides all the PC nonsense, and the huge big stinking turd of the “war, what is it good for?” pounded home propaganda, the show was for the first time, at least for me, just completely boring.  There was no tension or a feeling of looking forward to the next show.  I actually for the first time had to force myself to watch through each episode ( kind of like the second half of the original BBC series “Survivors” ).  In the case of the DVD collection, it was to get my monies worth. In the case of Walking Dead, it was because there was nothing else survivalist related to watch.  I feel pathetic and weak.
*
Tomorrow, no talk of the Walking Dead, just about the fallacy of thinking there will ever be peace or cooperation.  That will all be obvious, but I feel the need to reiterate.  Until then.

choose dildo size

CHOOSE DILDO SIZE
There doesn’t have to be anything wrong with a monopoly.  The trade guilds of yore would regulate prices and standards, and protect against the very thing monopolies do today.  Today’s companies work to establish a monopoly to cheat customers.  But they could enrich themselves by providing value and prohibiting others from competing on price alone.  They don’t do so because, well, they can.  There is no blowback.  They also do so because they HAVE to.  If you are the only  one providing value, others will drive you out of business no matter how good your products or practices are.  Exhibit A is the entire nation worth of Mom & Pop stores killed by Wal-Mart.
*
Okay, Wally itself is blameless.  It was the entire practice industry wide.  Globalization and deindustrialization.  Wal-Mart was just better at computerizing the process and making it THE most efficient.  Of course, efficiency itself is dangerous, but that is for another time.  Not everyone can be a professional selling to other professionals, which is the only small businesses in existence today able to compete with Wally.  No matter how much you have to charge to repair bicycles, you can, because Wally doesn’t do that.  They also don’t sell quality bikes ( neither do bike shops, except at pro racing levels, but again I shan’t digress ).
*
Some businesses were successful just on brutal work and exceptional discipline.  But that doesn’t work today in small business.  Because it is all about the prices and Wally sells for less than you buy.  It really is as simple as that.  You can only stay in business by not competing.  Do you know what killed video stores?  It wasn’t Netflix.  It wasn’t Blockbuster.  It was RedBox.  It was $1 movie rentals.  If you were paying property rent every month, you can’t make enough renting new release videos for a $1.  The other, older ones, sure.  But Netflix had all the older movies.  You were squeezed in the middle, but the video store was primarily about new releases.
*
( I didn’t watch TV in the 90’s, instead only watching movies.  I’m just now watching Friends and Fraiser.  On Netflix.  To me, they are a substitute for broadcast TV, not movies which are poor in selection.  I would still get all my movies from RedBox if they weren’t such foul quality.  So mostly I get the old movies from Netflix, but that isn’t because they are so good at offering movies, it is because the Hollywood industry is broken and offers a much worse percentage of terrible product than ever before.  It is all computer special effects and PC Princess propaganda with few stories or characters )
*
The problem with companies monopolizing a product or service is only apparent when you lose any ability to choose a substitute.  The power company is a monopoly, and your only alternative is to do without power or pay way too much on power storage ( the panels have gotten cheap enough, the batteries not so much ).  To counter that, local governments were supposed to regulate and control the power companies.  And they don’t do that anymore.  Right now I’m watching ads on YouTube about a Nevada senator being bribed by California interests to try to get our power grid hooked up to their dysfunctional “free market” one ( the ads are more subtle than that-I’m reading between the lines ).
*
The medical industry always had a monopoly on what health care or drugs were allowed to be offered, but at least you could fly overseas for alternate treatment or experiment on yourself with alternate medicine.  Then, they forced everyone to own medical insurance.  You weren’t forced into treatment, but you were forced to bail out the insurance ( read “banking” ) and medical industry from their past greed ( who do you think was behind MediCare? ).  It wasn’t technically taking away choice, it just penalized you regardless.
*
Another company skirting the issue of non-choice is Microsoft.  No, you don’t have to use them.  You never did.  There was always Macintosh at three times the price.  Oh, goodie, look at how Yuppie Scum and Rich Bitches get extra choices!  Now there are other operating systems if you are part of the Nerd Elite and can remain proficient in manipulating software.  There is even Google if you are a novice and don’t do much more than just surf the web.  The choices are rather constricted, however, when you previously bought into the Microsoft lie.  I’m not talking about sunk cost, but about proprietary programs.
*
What do I do when all my many years of writing is in Microsoft Word?  Well, I put all of them into Adobe PDF.  That protects me against Microsoft and its ever changing word processor that has serious compatibility issues with older versions.  MS wasn’t satisfied with my extra money every time I bought a new computer.  It had to try to force me to buy new software.  But I like my old software.  It is better and easier.  Tough Terror Testicles, the Lucifer Minion Bill Gates cries out!  I was never an entrepreneur, but a business pirate.  How did you expect to be treated?
*
My ten year old computer from Taiwan that has north of four million words typed on it, with the only issue being that the “E” is half rubbed off its key, is now useless because of Microsoft software.  My something like 15 year old word processor software was not compatible with the newest Word, but I could download a software patch that enabled the two to work together.  Bill had gotten money for the 2005 ( ? ) word processor as well as the 2013 one.  Why should I expect any issues?  Silly me, not enough OTHER people had bought the newest Word version.
*
I would type in my old version software on my old computer, both the machine and programming superior for the task, then thumb drive transfer over to the new machine for Web posting and saving to another disc for redundancy.  Well, my MS run machine had a massive brain fart and wouldn’t run its WiFi connection and long story short I had to reboot the whole thing to the factory setting.  I then had to reinstall crap like Chrome and Adobe Reader and a few other minor things.  Then, I went to reinstall the software patch for the two word processor compatibility.  The exact same one I had before.
*
And what happened?  Every single old Word file was corrupted.  I didn’t lose much.  Only three articles and one half completed book. Everything else was salvageable.  I’ll have to copy and paste the previous chapters of the Battle Rifle book from the Internet, rewrite the whole Hermit book, and double up on article writing for the week to replace articles.  That is minor.  That just reflects my slight lag time in backing up files to the backed up files ( I thought I had solved the old issues I always had with the older Word files, but as it happens, not 100%-the back up to the back-ups hadn’t yet been saved in the new Word, or converted to PDF ).
*
In the great scheme of things, this is just a hiccup.  My hate and discontent stems from the fact I’m forced into productivity crippling equipment and software by Microsoft’s quasi-monopoly.  The new computer keyboard is ABOVE one of those stupid built in mouse pads.  I don’t type with both hands, so I can’t use the computer as a wrist support.  I type one finger hunt and peck ( rather fast, granted ).  The new board is more physically demanding and goes against twenty years of practice ( I can’t USB plug in a separate keyboard as I’ve tried before and the doubled distance between board and monitor creates a depth perception issue ).  And the software, oy!  What vile bloated crap.  I can’t just do a spell correct, it includes a grammar check.  And it doesn’t include an off-line dictionary.  Again, minor issues.  The whole point of getting the new Word was to be able to upload online and publish.  That it does.  It just sucks at content creation.
*
It is these endless bullcrap issues, these Deaths By A Thousand Cuts, almost every single company screwing you and decreasing quality, that eat up a good portion of your existence.  BAH!

survival hermitage book 1

( note: this is version two.  Disregard completely my last attempts )
SURVIVAL HERMITAGE BOOK 1
INTRODUCTION
No survival strategy is perfect, but some are far worse than others.  Some are as good as it is going to get.  For instance, during the Cold War, the worst strategy was to live in a primary nuclear target so that being at Ground Zero ( you like how our propaganda ministers appropriated this term for the Twin Tower False Flag Attacks?  Equating a “terrorist” attack with millions being nuked.  Subconsciously you give it more gravitas because of the original definition ) you were vaporized before you had a chance to be frightened or aware.  The better strategy was to relocate to one of the few areas that was projected to be free of direct downwind fallout ( you might get vastly reduced amounts eventually as the atmosphere kept circulating the crap ).
*
The problem with this strategy way back in the day was that you needed to be in an area where no population or jobs were, such as Oregon ( believe it or not, just like California is wasn’t always packed to the gills with asshats ), or where no water was for hundreds of miles ( as in West Texas ).  If I recall correctly Tappon eventually ended up in the Oregon area as one of the pioneers following this fallout free zone, but then he had money and could publish a high dollar newsletter ( this was so long ago-I subscribed for one year, and can guess this format might have influenced Rawles-that there was an article on how to create your own newsletter using MS-DOS commands ).
*
If you lived in a nuclear fallout path, you had to spend some heavy coin on industrial level air filters.  Sure, there were plans for improvised ones out of toilet paper tubes and such, but these were manual.  And as much as I advocate manual tools, a 24/7 air filter pump seems far less realistic to me.  But even that aside, you needed lots of concrete or dirt, and neither is cheap ( the dirt is free, not the means to prop up its weight ).  Although, I will say that back then, even during the 70’s economic contraction, the average Schmoe actually would have been able to mostly afford this on an average income.  There were still real jobs out there, unlike today’s digital illusion thereof.
*
Back then, you could also live in the boonies and be in relative close proximity to a job.  They still had Mom & Pop enterprises, as the Chinese were still busy minding their own damn business and had yet agreed to be the globalists mercenaries.  We hadn’t yet even completely dismantled our industrial economy yet.  That would wait for Reagan.  Or, since I’m unabashedly a Reaganphile, my excuse for My Dawg is that he was already gone mentally, being older than dirt, and that scumass Bush Elder pulling the strings behind the scenes and turned the economy over to the bankers.
*
Nowadays, crap be crazy expensive.  And that isn’t mostly inflation, that is mostly everything being monopolized and you having no more choices but to pay the bankers vig.  You used to be able to farm on remote land and be left alone.  Now there is zoning and health regulations and inflated land values and property taxes and child endangerment if you aren’t grid dependent and laws against rain catchment and much more.  Not that it is impossible to live frugal and mostly free, but it is a heck of a lot harder and you must accept a wicked blow to your standard of living.  Remember when you didn’t need car insurance if your clunker was paid for?  And how you could fix it yourself?
*
You also had a lot less population back then.  It wasn’t much more than half of our current numbers just a few years after the Other Color floodgates were opened.  Just like Rome, who was conquered from within by fuzzy foreigners, the US elites saw a drop in their hooker and blow discretionary income and panicked and sold out their country for a few extra pieces of silver.  It wasn’t the Hippies, Leftists or communists selling out their culture and country, not that they didn’t do some damage, but rather those humpers in charge which failed to protect our borders from enemies foreign and encouraged enemies domestic to profit off their attacks.
*
There will always be stupid dumb bitches who deny biology for fun and profit.  There will always be redistributionists who want a free ride.  Those in charge should be gently discouraging them from their antics with a large shovel upside their head, they shouldn’t be selling the rest of us out and use those idiots as shock troops to profit off of.  We are too busy blaming the patsies and ignoring the perpetrators.  Don’t you see how easy it is for them to bribe you with dreams of sharing in the pillage?  Oh, we can’t blame capitalists of any crime, why, I want to be a capitalist myself when I grow up into my Big Boy pants.
*
The usual advice out there for preppers is to work three jobs and earn butt tons and spend twenty years building your concrete castle atop a mountain next to a babbling brook ( with appropriate herds of sheep who will be suitably nervous ).  Of course, you can’t actually live there because you are busy working in the city, and you can’t leave because that bar/church skank ( whichever type you fell for-and yes, not ALL bitches be golddigging whores.  But most of them are, so don’t get all uppity on me ) you knocked up is now your trophy wife and would get half your assets and the other half would go to pay off the debt she ran up.  So you get into more debt to buy a armored helicopter to be able to bug out to your retreat at the appropriate time.
*
That isn’t at all realistic.  Continued next time.

battle rifle book 11

BATTLE RIFLE BOOK 11
AK/SKS
I’ve never owned an AK carbine, although I’ve owned my share of SKS’s.  Same family, insofar as design and functionality.  I love the concept.  They are far better end of the world guns than the AR as far as surviving abuse and the real world of the battlefield where crap gets knocked about regularly ( if it wasn’t for the sandbox vets who were far less mistreated by their M4’s than the ‘Nam vets were by their M-16’s, you could discount most reports on the AR reliability as gun range warriors, who never abuse the weapon.  Alas, the AR system has proven itself ).  Where they suck at is price and accuracy.
*
Now, I’m NOT saying the AK is inaccurate.  Mostly, the cheap ammunition combined with the sloppiest quality guns ( like from China ) make them inaccurate.  If you buy a better quality-and here is an actual surprise as most of those are Made In America-AND stay away from that steel cased crap ( it is the chemicals inside that quickly corrode your inner parts, plus it just isn’t at all accurate.  Beyond a hundred yards or so, stay away from steel case.  If you plan on ever using the gun over about 5k rounds, avoid steel case.  Even if brass is twice the price, it is cheaper because you hit targets with it ), you don’t lose a lot over AR accuracy.  At least to about 200 yards.
*
The issue also becomes that a cheap AR is far better at accuracy than a cheap AK.  I love the SKS.  It is a better constructed gun ( outside China ) and inherently more accurate.  Alas, they start at $400.  And that is usually for a used gun.  Used with that corrosive ammunition.  I’d rather spend $500 and get a cheap NEW AK.  So the SKS is no longer a viable choice in my mind.  I love the Lee-Enfield at $100-$150.  Beyond that, it is a beat to crap gun having no business being expensive.  The same with the SKS.  They have no business selling at their elevated price, for a used gun.  I’m not a collector, I’m a user.
*
If I want an accurate AK, I’m probably spending $600-$700.  I can get a crappy G3 for $700, and a really great one for $1,000.  But there is that receiver cover dent issue with the G3 ( covered in its own section ) and parts are far more expensive with the G3.  Plus, where everyone owns an AR, and perhaps ten to twenty percent owns an AK, almost nobody owns any of the Full Thirties.  They are a niche product.  If you want full blown apocalypse robustness, at least you have a chance of running across a few more AK’s.  Not the G3’s.  Not the SKS ( unless it is a Chinese hunk of crap, and that is NO find at all ).  If you want a tank of a gun, the AK is the only viable choice.
*
Now, yes, the AK does share that receiver cover dent issue with the G3.  And it is a sheet metal monstrosity.  But one that you can either easily and cheaply replace, or easily fix yourself with a hammer ( I’m not claiming you can fix that particular issue yourself from experience, but claiming that most field expedient repairs seem possible with the AK.  From forums it seems that bent AK receivers don’t generally stop operations, unlike on the G3.  And the AK part is $20, verses the G3 at $200 ).
*
I’ve always compared the AK verses the AR to the Lee-Enfield verses the Mauser ( yes, whippersnappers, us older guys used to talk about them a lot.  They were all over the place and cheap, and much better built than plastic carbines.  Now, plastic or sheet metal carbines are all that is left affordably ).  The Enfield wasn’t accuracy incarnate.  It was built to keep firing no matter what.  Even today, it far outshines the semi-auto plastic wunder weapons in Artic conditions.  It was twice as accurate as the M1 Garand, but compared to the Mauser it wasn’t.  If you were really sipping ammo after the apocalypse, the Mauser was your only option.  I just preferred the extra robustness of the Enfield ( this refers to ease of loading, NOT quality of manufacture).  Which was designed PRIOR to the trenches of WWI.  They just had some really bright boys behind it.  Not that Mausers were at a disadvantage per se, as they were always operating under LOW fire rather than volley fire.  If you trained your men as marksmen, the Mauser was fine.
*
The AK is accurate enough at short range.  They worked superbly in Vietnam.  Afghanistan, not so much.  Don’t rely on an AK if shots over 200 to 250 yards are going to be normal for you ( but best under 100 ).  The ammunition was designed to be an assault rifle round.  The advantage you have with the AK is, simply, mission reliability.  You can almost guarantee that nothing goes amiss during a mission.  The AR is far more reliable than ever in its history, but it is more accurate and hence more prone to breakage.  The parts have no slop in them, like an Enfield or AK does.  Too close tolerances.  Which means that when it works it is fantastic but it isn’t designed to work if anything goes wrong.  Parts breaking on the AK stop the gun, also.  They just aren’t as fragile.
*
It is a relative measurement.  Both systems work good in combat.  It is merely that under the worst conditions, RELATIVE to the AK, the AR will experience more reliability issues.  With the AR, until something breaks you can hit your target far more often.  With an AK, nothing is liable to break on it, but after a certain range your hit probability decreases.  Do you want to conserve ammo at all costs, accepting limitations with that, or do you want the gun to work better in the field at the cost of accuracy?  It isn’t that the AK is better or worse than the AR, it is that one does one thing and the other does another thing.  It is as simple as that.
*
Arguing one is better than the other is merely arguing for your set of priorities.  More fragile but won’t waste ammo or built like a tank but accuracy on top of that is going to cost you extra money.  This is no longer the frugal survivalist choice.  It is spending extra to buy reliability.  And I’m not talking about the base model $500 AK, verses the base AR at $350.  You need to spend more because the entry level AK’s won’t get you much accuracy ( which you don’t need if you are short range with steel cases, so don’t spend more ).  If you want reliability AND accuracy you will spend roughly twice as much going with the AK over the AR.  Not really much of a way around that.

shelter 2

SHELTER IN PLACE 2
If you are so optimistic that you only read me to be entertained ( well, that could also be the case if you are so prepared that nothing I can ever say would do much more than just cause you to mildly tweak things ), if you were so happy and cheerful about Life, The Universe And Everything that when you were born you declared that you love the cold and brightness and boy howdy you can hardly wait to begin this challenging new adventure, you are a moron.  For Christ On A Crutch’s sake, show a little situational awareness-it ain’t all unicorn glitter and brotherly love.  I can almost understand how you would think that All Is Well, if you are that faithful to our Happy Time Growth Paradigm, and charge off on grand schemes of new employment or entrepreneurship.
*
But to normal people, who are aware after a lifetime of adversity that it is in fact true that a crackhead would kill you for $20 if he thought there would be no repercussions, the millions of people NOT participating in the labor force isn’t a good thing and does NOT indicate blissful golf filled retirement but rather unemployment at above 1930’s Depression levels.  If you aren’t fearful of a pink slip, if you aren’t sucking the peanuts out of your bosses scat, if you aren’t aware that if you move you just might never find another job, you haven’t been paying attention.  High unemployment of a minimum of 25% and up to 33% means you cannot assume anything but the worst.
*
So, yes, your prepping plans might by necessity be Sheltering In Place.  This is far from ideal, and I don’t recommend it.  But I also recommend five years of food ( easy peasy lemon squeezey when you only stock wheat, vitamins and shortening.  Before container cost, only $500 ), and few of you think that is feasible.  So I can understand why you don’t have junk land.  Actually, I seriously understand.  A lot of that is a thousand miles away, and without a realistic way to get there, why even have it?  Before, I said that if you can’t live on junk land for whatever reason ( such as, like myself, your Old Lady refuses.  Although unlike you, my land is a two hour walk away ), just move to the smallest town close to that land where you can get a job.
*
But again, I KNOW this is advice much easier given than taken.  Will you find a job again if you move?  The brother in law was a supervisor at the gold mine and has practical skills up the wazoo such as welding.  And he can’t find a job outside this area.  Granted, he is almost 50 years old, a near certain death sentence when job hunting anymore.  But it is indicative of the job market to some degree.  And retail?  There is an industry practically guaranteeing you zero future.  So while staying in you AO is problematic, it isn’t the worst possible choice unless you are in some extra super sized craphole like LA or Chicago.  If I was in a major metro area, I think I would move regardless.  Because you are at ground zero.
*
Most of you are probably already in areas that are safe-er.  How many survivalists live in Manhattan?  When economic times were better I imagine most of you already moved to the area that was the best trade-off between employment and lower population.  So, if you must shelter in place due to fear of unemployment ( and if you aren’t scared, with 33% unemployment, you are that aforementioned Way Too Optimistic Unicorn Fart Glitter Sniffer ), you need to do a couple of things.  I don’t necessarily subscribe to the historic Yuppie Super Fortress strategy.  All well and good, actually necessary while affordable, to bar every window and have good solid doors with extra long screws for a beefed up frame.  That just makes good sense.  But this whole thing with bullet proofing?  And steel shutters?  And all the rest of that nonsense?
*
For that kind of money I would invest in an RV in the wilderness, on land, with a small business AND funds to live on for years until it paid off.  But then, I’ll never have a suburban home I need to sink fifty grand in to make bullet proof.  For what some people pay for FLIR scopes I can have all of the above because I can prep and live cheap.  Anyway, I can’t see much sense in trying to make your home a castle able to withstand all but RPG fire or heavier.  Make it burglar proof, mob proof and fire proof.  Because those are the things that are the most likely to happen.  Just stucco siding alone, for fire-proofing, should deflect or stop the most common rounds a crowd is likely to use.
*
This should get you through the increasing civil unrest.  After that, you need an escape route, a cache nearby for short stays if you had to flee short term, and then a buried food cache for when you return.  You’ll need a way to escape from besides the regular doors, and a way to sneak back in no one else knows about so you are not the one outside trying to figure out how to force your way inside.  As for the food cache, under a concrete slab is probably a pretty good bet, rather than anything fancy like hollow walls or a hidden room in the basement or whatever.  Remember, an IBC tote can hold near five years of wheat and are sold in most decent sized cities usually for under, sometimes way under, $200.
*
The equivalent in five gallon buckets would cost $250 to $300 and not be as waterproof ( although easier to move ).  I don’t know what solid  iron bars over the window would cost, although I know Chinese bars are stupid cheap at $20 a window ( I can’t imagine they are super quality, but they would be BTN ).
And surely anyone can dig a hole and do a half assed slab over it with even the cheapest concrete.  None of this has to be expensive.  This is far from the best plan, as there is the issue of safety fleeing and returning, just for starters.  But we don’t always get what we want, do we?  We should.  At least me, if not you.  But that doesn’t make it so.  Just make lemonade out of lemons.  You don’t need a real pretty wife, even if you want one.  Get the one you can attract to learn cooking and the proper techniques for oral gratification ( both instructions online ), and she will do just fine.  The same with prepping.  You can make Less Than Ideal work for you, cheaply.
