For those of you not wishing to click over, it is a picture of the Nip who warned not to go to war with the US because a rifleman was behind every blade of grass.  But instead of the traditional quote, he is saying all the riflemen with cheap AR’s can’t work their guns and they now present a tripping hazard.  As I said, laugh out loud funny.  I saw it one week ago ( remember, I always write one week ahead as a cushion ) at Western Rifle Dudes site-so, beanie propeller cap tip.

But it prompted me to write this article which I was going to leave alone for some time.  Cheap Ass Guns.  I had started calling the $335 AR-15 the “21^st Century Mosin-Nagant” some time ago and am impatiently awaiting my Internet Accolades.  Still.  Oh well, hump them all dead.  Bastards.  To quote someone else, even poor people deserve to defend themselves.  Keep in mind that in the US, gun control started as a means to keep the original Deplorables from arming themselves.  In the South, newly freed Blacks always posed a threat.

We used to treat that with a raspberry and a dismissive wave, but I think current events have proven the fear to be a bit too true for comfort.  In the North, all poor people were feared, White and Black ( although Blacks moving North was fairly recent, despite what looking at Detroit might suggest ), by the Gott Damn Yankee Hooer Elite ( yes, I tend to lump in all Northerners as one, and even though it can fit, true Yankees are only New England religious fanatics who feel compelled to cure others of sin.  By force ).

If you look at the people who venomously dislike guns, once you subtract the vapid idiot brigades from colleges and such, the Brownshirt bully boys, most of them are from Yankee backgrounds ( Yankee as in Puritan busybody BlueBloods ).  Since it would be a bit too retarded to take away all the guns, since not everybody is foolish enough to pretend the FedGov has their best interests at heart and might fight against that, nearly all gun control is about prohibiting guns from The Poor.  Why?  The Proletariat is who is the most dangerous to the rulers.

The middle class are easy to control.  They are the debt wage slaves.  The poor though, they have very little to lose.  The whole idea is to corral them.  Welfare works great.  And prohibiting cheap guns keeps a lid on the protests.  Every time a cheap gun source is begun by those pesky Free Marketers, the loophole is closed.  Guns by mail is too cheap.  They added retail overhead cost to each gun to fix that problem.  China makes guns too cheap, so there goes that import source ( and yes, some US gun companies sided with import bans, the greedy pukes ).

The fact that AR-15’s are too cheap now means that the Yankee Scum will be banning them next.  Probably not an outright ban, but something to ratchet their costs right back up.  And I don’t think I need remind you that an expensive AR reverts to being a piece of crap.  Only affordability makes it a viable choice right now.  Once it becomes too expensive you revert to owning a too easily broken delicate wallflower shooting a round that is less than ideal ( although not as bad as it used to be, just like the gun ).

I don’t want to get stuck talking about the AR.  I’m sick to death about discussing it.  Especially since its Dirt Cheapness is for a limited time only.  If you want a cheap one, get the $40 lower receivers and the Palmetto State Armory $300 kits, as many as you’ll think you’ll ever want, NOW.  If the economy doesn’t tank and bankrupt most AR businesses and customers, the gun control folks will.  Anything cheaper than Palmetto will be one of those cheap AR’s the above link makes fun of.  Even they are far from perfect-just Good Enough.

If you wish to be one of my hero’s and proclaim before God, minions and everyone that semi-auto’s blow chunks, and wish to stick with bolt actions, you won’t save much on the guns but you will at least save on the ammunition.  A decent bolt can be had for $250 on occasion, but that would have to be used.  Most of them will probably be Little Used, as everyone has the AR Fever.  But if you’d prefer to stick with new, I’ve seen the single shot break opens for as cheap as $260.

Those are LESS accurate than bolts.  Call it on par with semi’s.  A break open isn’t as rigid, and then are made as cheap as possible ( most bolts are, also, of course.  The best value in cheap seems to be Savage ).  But a cheap bolt will usually serve you better than a cheap AR.  It just isn’t as sexy.  Not that a frozen or jammed AR is too sexy, but they are neat until you start firing them.  Anyway, the main attribute to singles is the butt simple design that is almost impossible to break.  Not necessarily the cheaper price.

You can buy the cheapest gun, and treat it as a Butter Knife Gun ( more on this tomorrow ), or you can buy the cheapest possible gun that will suffice long term ( buying all you’ll ever need, NOW, both because of the apocalypse and because of politics ), but beware- Cheap is on the endangered species list.  Not just guns but everything.  Once the PetroDollar is dead, goodbye imports and hello REAL inflation ( we forced others to take it up the ass inflation wise, with the Petro Dollar.  That will reverse back to you and me ).

One day soon, the “idiots” that bought $400 AR’s or the $100 Wal-Mart shotguns will be looking pretty smart, and those unarmed, pretty damn stupid ( and BTW, not having enough ammo puts you in the EXTRA moronic retard category ).  This is not to discount the fact that cheap AR’s will make you a stumbling hazard.  I’ll get into that tomorrow.

MR HEATER BLOWS ASS

I’ve mentioned this before, but I recently read an article recommending Mr. Heater brands and then noticed Canadian Prepper had a video out that seemed to also endorse them ( I was just browsing, so I didn’t watch the thing ), and I have to say that Mr. Heater blows ass.  It deep throats mule member.  It is a vile piece of crap.  As an emergency stove, it just might be the next best thing to sliced white bread.  As a heater you use regularly, day to day, it is not only worthless, it is a rip-off.

Now, call me old fashion, but I kind of expect emergency, LIFE SAVING gear to actually work.  I expect a wee bit more than a disposable one time use.  Okay, fine, you wear a space blanket once.  You don’t expect it to not tear on the second or third time.  But a hundred dollar heater?  To me there seems to be an implicit agreement you will get your monies worth.  A Mylar blanket costs seventy cents ( buying in bulk ), so a one time use is a good deal.  Especially since it is supposed to save your life.

And if an item is designed and built with an engineered shelf life, do you want to bet your life on it?  It is SUPPOSED to last 500 hours, say, but what if you end up needing it a smidge more?  Or, it fails a smidge before its due date?  You are playing with fire, as well as burning your money in it.  Long suffering minions might recall my jihad against Wal-Mart with their piece of crap camping stove. I’m going to tell the story again, so tough noogies.  While I’m currently SLIGHTLY forgiving of Wally right now due to their below cost commodities, that only buys them so much good will.

My first Wally camping stove ( sheet metal, fold up, uses propane ) was their brand name ( Ozark Trail? ) for about $20, and it lasted an impressive five years.  That was using it every day for coffee and cooking and heating bathing water.  When that finally failed, hey, no big deal.  I got my monies worth.  I went back to Wally and got the exact same unit for near $30.  Okay, fine, times are tough after the ’08 near collapse.  I get it, inflation.

That one lasted NOT five years but only five months.  There is really only one thing to fail on those, the pressure regulator.  I figured it was merely a lemon.  Nope. The next one also only lasted five months.  To say I was displeased would be an understatement.  Livid comes closer.  Those whoring pig humpers!  Those greedy twats!  Asswhores! I tried K-Marts unit but it only lasted about 8 months.  Just like their clothing.  Always about 50% more life than Wally’s products ( this was near ten years ago.  Since then, K-Mart stopped producing Less Worse and went to Just As Bad ).

Thankfully, Sportsman’s Guide offers a cast iron rather than sheet metal camping stove that uses the new type of propane hose/connection that has the pressure regulator on the hose so that the appliance doesn’t need one ( beware only having one of these hoses.  Even if made to last a lifetime-and I don’t know if they are-you NEVER just have one of something ).  And, even with shipping, it is the same price near abouts as the crap Wally one.  How does this tie in with Mr. Heater? Planned obsolescent products. Mr. Heater USED to have good quality.  No longer.

Mr. Heater used to last for years.  Now, the same unit at a higher price does NOT last through one winter.  And I’m not talking about running the thing all day long.  I’m talking about a single tank of propane a month, and the last two Mr. Heaters I had couldn’t survive the entire single winter.  I had a VERY strict budget.  X miles a month on the truck ( when I had one ).  Four hours a day on the heater ( 120 hours use was one 5 gallon tank of propane at the low 4k BTU setting ).

I did this from 2008 to 2012, living up in the RV.  Another propane tank made the percolated coffee.  That warmed us up in the morning.  Okay, not really.  Even bundled up it was usually always cold unless the sun was full ( we froze the first winter ).  The second winter I had added insulation to the interior walls and solar gain was quite impressive.  Like 50 degrees ( in American, not commie metric ) even if in the teens outside.  But hot liquid only made the bundles of wool comfortable.  It was still primitive living.

The sun went down at 4pm, and the heater was budgeted to run from then to 8pm.  That was it.  Money was for the ex-wife, not staying alive in the winter.  This schedule was adhered to religiously ( making me few friends, especially with the then wife ).  What I am telling you is that there was a strict continuity across different Mr. Heater units.  The older ones lasted several winters.  The newer ones?  You couldn’t expect too much more than 500 hours of use from one.  And yes, that was WITH a fuel filter attached.

If a propane stove lasts 1,000 hours and costs $100, that is ten cents an hour cost for the heater.  Propane was about the same cost.  Twenty cents an hour is NOT unreasonable ( again, this was the 4k BTU setting.  Only good for a small room, really ).  If the stove lost quality and now you spent twenty-five cents an hour, no big deal, right?  After all, it costs about the same to run one of those efficient oil filled radiator electric heaters.  And Mr. Heater works off grid. Perfect for emergencies, you grin in satisfaction as you believe you have bested me.

Wrong!  Because here is the thing.  Mr. Heater went out of their way to screw over their customers ten years ago.  Quality reduction reduced the stoves use at least by a half.  As the price increased.  I honestly can’t remember how many hours an old Mr. Heater lasted for, but I don’t think 2k hours was an unreasonable guess as a minimum.  You lost 75% of its life and saw a 25% price increase.  I get that this is just inflation.  But here is the thing.  When are they going to make it even worse?

They did it at LEAST one time.  They just got done operating three years under increased banker interest rates.  They should be hurting right about now.  If they haven’t further reduced quality already, don’t you think they will very soon?  After all, sales must be down.  As unemployment increases and wages stagnate, fewer people are prepping, ice fishing, camping or otherwise buying Mr. Heater’s.  Do you really want to gamble on them not humping you, again?  THAT is why you don’t buy one of their products.  Not because I’m a vengeful consumer.  Not because you want to boycott them.

Because they betrayed the customers trust and WILL, I guarantee you a jelly filled donut, do it again.  If their little monkey molesting bean counters come back with research that the average buyer only uses Mr. Heater ten hours a year, they might reduce quality from a 500 hour to a mere 100 hour unit.  IF they haven’t already done so.  My bet is that they have, and use some of their increased profits sending sample units to all the prepper consumer reporter dudes, who unknowingly are deceived.  After all, how many hours do they REALLY test them?

Once a company is untrustworthy, you don’t keep buying from them, even with lowered expectations.  Why would you?  If they screwed you after one economic contraction, they will again.  It is one thing to occasionally get a dud, like I do from Amazon or Sportsman’s Guide.  That is excusable, especially working with hateful Ornamentals who wish all Capitalist Running Dogs to die.  The companies do such a great job, you can excuse a small amount of mischief.  But when you offer ONE product?  And you screw that one up?  No one should do business with you.

WHY TRIBE? Continued.

Okay, so everyone is a danger, especially potential tribe members.  Why, you innocently ask as I gaze upon your empty skull in amusement, a wise teacher bemused by his students?  Because you are inviting those potential enemies inside your perimeter.  If you think Charlie is dangerous OUTSIDE, wait until you invite him to diner.  The most dangerous people are those you thought you could trust, like that sweet innocent gal teaching your Little Johnny about Butt Pirates, how diversity is our strength and the joys of being a Soy Boy.  But far more dangerous than delayed philosophical confusion.

Your only alternative to trusting the lazy, greedy No Budgeting Mo-Fo’s to NOT screw you when their pathetic stash runs out is to stock up for them, in such quantities as they don’t see the benefit in killing you off and stealing your supplies.  AND to stock up for all their parasitic worthless camp followers.  Can you afford all that?  If so, go with God.  If not, you have no other alternative than trying to hide out from everyone and going it alone.  Being a hermit.  So, to the means to that end.

Just being a hermit is going to go a long ways protecting you.  If nobody knows you are there it is hard to decide to attack you for the extra succulent flesh on your ass.  But there is a lot you need to do to substitute for extra people. There is no one to help you fight, no one to help you raise food.  No one to help build or gather firewood.  No one to patrol or guard for you.  You’ll need to do this yourself.  It obviously won’t be easy.  Neither is dealing with spoiled rotten idiots who think you owe them a life of luxury.

Who said Apocalypses would be easy?  Marketing departments of prepper suppliers and most periodicals covering that field would lead you to believe that with a mere swipe of a credit card all good things are possible after a collapse, but only flaming idiots believe that.  But if not easy, we will at least aim at the situation most lonely preppers will find themselves.  Alone and old.  Like the geriatric rest home, but with better food.  You need to plan on not just being alone, but weak.  Most older preppers assume they need Oil Age tools.

And you DO, but they really cannot be Fueled Tools.  An easy For Instance is that you cannot store a huge yard full of propane tanks for heat.  But super insulated homes with Oil Age insulation, that is great.  So insulated that solar gain ( cheap and affordable window panes are strictly Oil Age ) will keep you comfortable all day, and then you only need a few scraps of wood for night use ( and solar cookers for most daytime cooking ).  You avoid noisy chainsaws, unaffordable propane tanks of industrial size, and the need for help gathering wood.

Firearms are a necessary tool, but they are also over rated and planned for inappropriately.  A semi-auto makes you far LESS effective than simply common sense applied tactics.  If you are a skilled woodsman, a bow would be adequate for guerrilla warfare, with at most a sidearm as back-up.  Far better to strike out without warning than having a plan to lay down covering fire in the hundreds of rounds.  If you have little cover, such as in the desert, a single shot ambush and a quick escape is also better than gearing up in Ninja submachinegunner gear.

You still need Oil Age tools, but one type of use is consuming and the other is conserving.  Wheat or other grains in storage is far cheaper and smarter than being in a agriculture location that is sure to be a target, and needing both supplies to equip a tribe for farming AND to protect the farm.  In theory you eat up all your stored food then die.  But also in theory you are overrun and killed for that farm that was planned on to feed you forever, anyway.  “Smart plans” must also be affordable and realistic.

Another objection to not having a tribe is that it will be difficult to join a tribe after the die-off.  If you were twenty years old, I can understand your concern.  Are you?  Most of us are old.  Something like 40% of respondents in an online poll were preppers over age sixty.  Another large percentage were no where near as young as combat effectives would be.  My days of running about without heaving up a lung are about a half decade past, as of this writing.  Oh, you say, best be joining a tribe so you can just be a sedentary guard, right?

Well, no.  Because not only are people evil and dangerous, they are also stupid.  Seriously.  Even those well read and logical, with education, do really stupid crap all the time.  Like myself, living in town.  I have hermitage property.  I have all the supplies I’d ever need.  I’m self employed from writing.  I KNOW I need to live out there.  And I don’t.  It doesn’t matter what excuse I use ( wanting to live my last year’s happy, with a companion ), the simple fact of the matter is that what I’m doing is really humping stupid.

People are used to being stupid.  Look at how your pecker led you around for near forty years.  Look what makes you happy-a full belly and mindless entertainment ( you watch football, I watch movies or read ).  Individuals no matter how smart, act stupid.  We almost always run our societies to allow for stupid.  Everyone says, strength in numbers.  But those numbers are a bunch of friggin morons.  No matter what plan you come up with for survival, you are usually better off being on your own.  At least you know how your dumb ass will act.  You want to rely on another idiot for combat?

Even if nothing else, THAT idiot will prioritize his own survival.  That is just the way it is, with ad hoc groups.  If you weren’t born and raised in a tribe, there is NO infrastructure built up to minimize the stupid and maximize everyone’s chances for survival.  THAT right there is the biggest reason to NOT form a tribe whole cloth.  It is an inferior organization.  BORN to tribe is best, followed by lone wolf.  The least effective is forming a tribe.  Because a tribe of what used to be individuals will always remain individualistic.

WHY TRIBE?

“You need a tribe to survive” is one of the survivalist/prepper mantras that everyone drones on about, and they are actually correct.  You do need a tribe.  Humans evolved to be social animals to the point if physically you can survive, it is difficult to mentally, without a group of fellow humans around.  Now, just as you can physically survive without a sexual partner, doing so WILL affect you mentally, and while you COULD survive NOT being around other people, you will do so very much NOT right in the head.  You are ignoring biology.

I’m not going to spend any time on whether you are suitable for long stretches of avoiding people.  Most people are not.  It is easy enough to find out-simply avoid people and, AND very important, ALL substitutions of people such as telephones and TV and the Internet.  Test to see if you are okay with just the lonely thoughts in your head.  Most people cannot cope.  If you can go a month, you’ll be a great hermit.  Otherwise, be honest with yourself.  Can you drop out and hide, or not?  If you can’t stand being snowed in, stay in town.

This whole book/discussion I’ll assume you WANT to be a hermit, and can stand to be.  You don’t need to swear off people, but you must be able to stay away for long periods without being needy.  Being a hermit allows you to stay, mostly, enough, hidden. Strategically it is your best bet for surviving.  Which kind of bites the tribe thing in the ass.  Tribes are necessary as it is a beneficially self supporting mechanism.  One person obviously cannot breed and fight and manufacture and guard and everything else a group can do.  So, how do we fix that?

First, you have to know that if you’ve done something as drastic as constructed a hermitage, you obviously understand that this die-off will be unlike any other die off in the history of forever.  No other civilization, no matter how rich or productive in rapine, ever, never, ever came anywhere close to being as overpopulated as we are.  Never.  Not close.  At its peak the entire Roman empire was about 60 million.  That is all of Europe and North Africa and the Levant.  Today, JUST the country of Italy has almost as many people, with Europe itself the equal of the entire globes population back then.

Today, JUST New York City itself has a bigger population that the entire Thirteen Colonies did at independence.  Coal and oil alone are responsible for this population, and they alone feed that many.  How can anyone believe that this die-off at the end of the Oil Age won’t be a 99 point something % die-off is beyond my comprehension.  So if you know every-friggin-body is going to die, overall, you know ONLY a hermitage has a good chance of success.  Obviously, not the ONLY chance.  But if you are resource poor, that is your only realistic one.

Nobody is going to form a tribe with you.  Nobody thinks like you.  They refuse to draw out today to its logical deadly conclusion.  Myself, I’d call the More Than A MRE Case And A Gun level of preppers at around 30k ( old number of American Survival Guide subscribers, old Rawles blog visitor numbers, give or take ).  These are the active, daily participants.  600 read my blog, which for nearly twenty years ( in various incarnations ) has been mostly ignored by all others in this publishing niche.

I’ll give Rawles his due-he did mention me once or twice, more than any other actual survivalist publication ( again, my issue with Rawles is NOT doctrinal. It is squandered opportunity as his blog jumped the shark.  I might have sharp words for his dangerous advice, but I always used to respect him nonetheless ).  But by and large everyone ignores my far too difficult advice.  As readers here, being barely over 1% of the harder core survivalists, your chances of finding anyone serious enough to actually properly prepare approach near zero.  You’ll find others, but you won’t find any truly serious ones.

Which pretty much leaves you all alone.  Hermit or not.  And as if that wasn’t bad enough, not only are you surrounded by posers who have no true interest in any kind of dampening of their luxury lifestyle, you also are surrounded by the scum and villainy of the universe ( was that a Star Wars reference?  I noticed it as I wrote it, although I’m sure I’m off slightly.  Yeah, there was only ever one Star Wars, as far as I’m concerned ).  Who will, with as close to zero additional prompting as possible, want to actually kill you.

As in dead.  Let us put this into perspective.  A women you thought loved you, who had your children, doesn’t care whether you have enough money left over after the divorce so as to be able to eat properly enough to stay healthy, nor does she care if you get run over on the bicycle that was your only transportation.  What makes you think ANYONE, at all, anywhere, will give two craps about killing you for a mere scrap of bread, or for your potential as stew pot fodder?  If your child’s mother doesn’t care if you die, why would anyone else?

This isn’t hyperbole utilized to scare you straight into accepting my personal pet theories on the coming die-off.  This is an honest question, that if you honestly answer, you will see how much danger you are in as civilization collapses.  Absolutely nobody cares if they have to kill you to benefit themselves.  And that includes almost every potential tribal member you could recruit now.  Because if they aren’t serious enough to prep like you ( NO luxuries, five to ten years of food, dozens of cases of ammo rather than boxes, and etcetera ), they will end up killing you for what you have.

THE M-1 FAMILY

I’m not sure what the attrition rate of weapons on the battlefield is today, compared to seventy years ago.  From shrapnel to bullets, from bent barrels from bayonet fighting to the weapon falling prey to gravity and hard surfaces, no firearm is going to be so tough that it doesn’t get banged up.  So I can see where it would be in the governments interests to have weapons that are able to be made much more cheaply.  If you have to replace them anyway, why not make them cheaper to start with?  What started as wartime resource scarcity turned into better mass production.

The Lee-Enfield no4 was far superior to the no1 in every way.  It was meant to save lots of money in production but it also gave the troops a better performing rifle.  The German assault carbine was exactly what the troops needed, AND was much easier to produce, but it was just too little too late as the inferior American and Russian weapons and tactics wore down Germany in cannon fodder fashion.  The AK-47 was just a continuation of old Russian designs, but the German round AND production methods they ripped off was the true innovation.

The AK doesn’t get the respect it deserves from the American survivalist.  A large portion of this is the fault of the American manufactures, NOT the design of the weapon.  It is far too expensive for how cheap it SHOULD be to manufacture, but as American gun manufacturers have been paying off politicians for many decades to restrict imports as a competitive advantage, they get to charge as much as they desire.  Even the “bargain” G-3 here should be much cheaper as the rollerblock design is the cheapest to produce.

But at least with the AK, you get Old School reliability with the weapon.  It was cheaper to produce, and boy did they produce the heck out of them, but they also made them very rugged on the battlefield.  But after the AK, unfortunately, most other cheap to produce rifles were NOT anywhere close to as rugged.  The G-3, the FN-FAL and the M-16 are much more fragile even though they are relatively cheap to manufacture.  The frugality went too far.  Again, this is RELATIVE.  The G-3 has that receiver dent issue, the FAL had problems jamming with dirt and while the M-16 is accurate as hell, it is delicate and fragile.

The M-1 family of weapons is manufactured like hundred year old guns were.  They were far sturdier because they were pre-Nazi design produced.  The Garand was a huge beast, but it was built like a tank.  The M-14 was essentially nothing more than a Garand with a detachable magazine.  And the Mini-14 was the same design but with the changes needed to produce them much cheaper.  An Every Man’s M-1 for the mass market.

( fun filled fact-the same guy who redesigned the AR-10 to chamber a 5.56 rather than 308 also designed the Mini-14 from the M-14. He was an industrial production efficiency expert, not a gun designer per se ).  The reason that M-14’s are so much more expensive is because they are much more expensive to manufacture.  They are designed and manufactured as if they were a 1890’s bolt action but in semi-automatic.  You are getting, by design, a weapon far less fragile for its end user.  So, yes, an M-14 is a hurtful $1500.  And the Mini cost twice as much as an AR-15.  And it is insane what they want for a NON-Century Arms AK-47.

But they all deliver something for their price.  Battlefield reliability ( the problems a Mini is associated with are from the manufacturer, NOT the design ).  This is why I’m no where near as happy with the FN-FAL as I should be.  Just as with the Galil, for what it costs to make, you are spending WAY too much for it ( even if American manufacturers spend a lot more to make the AK’s and FAL’s, that is, again, a problem of leadership and incompetence, not that of the guns design ), and hence NOT a contender here.

Is an AK worth seven or eight hundred bucks?  A M-14 worth twice that?  Personally I do not think so.  But at least you get SOME compensation for that price with dependability ( again, RELATIVELY ).  You are buying pre-1950’s design ruggedness ( the M-14 is 1930’s design ).  I’d even say that the M-16 is compensated for its frailness by its accuracy.  You are getting SOMETHING in the trade-off.  But the Galil, FAL and even the G3 are all overpriced for what they deliver.  They are Nike shoe prices on a Converse pair of sneakers.

If you are going to accept a battle rifle that is fragile, just go with the cheap AR-10.  One half to one third the price.  Or go with a bolt action.  Don’t JUST pay for semi-auto, which is what you are really doing on the overpriced fragile gun choices.  I won’t depart on a tangent over semi verses manual actions.  Here I am trying to focus on value.  ANYTHING semi-auto is going to cost a metric butt ton more money.  That is a given.  But don’t get ripped off.  Get the most for your money.  The Galil and the FAL are NOT it.

The M-16 is an inherently VERY accurate weapon, and THAT pays for its fragility ( along with really low prices ).  The M-14 is VERY expensive but no where near as fragile in the field ( it IS expensive to maintain if you are going for accuracy, due to its production design ) because it is blocks of metal, NOT sheet metal ( the AK uses sheet metal to its advantage, not deterrent ).  The G3 BARELY passes muster, as it is overpriced for what it SHOULD cost to make and was poorly designed for field use, but at least it is relatively affordable in comparison and the rest of its parts are bomb proof.

The Galil is just a better fitted and better feeling AK.  No way is it worth its price.  The FAL would be a superior weapon to almost anything else on the list ( superior to the AK because of its cartridge ) if the damn thing came down at least half its price.  But it isn’t going to happen, and for its price you’re much better off with the M-14.  And, it wasn’t as near jam-proof as the G3 or the AK.

Ruger seems to make either really good, or really crap weapons.  From everything I’ve heard, you still must be wary of the Mini, even if they are improved, or LESS evil than they were.  At this point I can’t say they are a better AR replacement, and you all know my reservations of the AR.  ONLY the AR’s cheap price keeps them in the running.  We all need to have a very cheap option, as we all deserve to be armed, even those of us rather poor or loath to use credit.

The AR’s are fragile and the Mini’s have a superior design that is executed poorly.  The AK’s have gotten into the G3 price range, but only have a 200 yard REAL effective range, EXCEPT they are THE most rugged and dependable.  The G3 would be as dependable as an AK, having figured out how to be much more accurate while still not jamming or breaking, yet STILL have that pesky receiver dent issue ( and, are overpriced.  But so is the AK, so I call that a wash ).  The M-14 is only suitable for the upper middle class, but you get your monies worth.  With a FAL, you do NOT.

That covers all the different weapons.  There is certainly no clear winner.  Every single one has flaws and strong points ( except the M1-overpriced for severely overused and not so accurate.  Really, OVER powerful for its slop-factory pass was 4 MOA.  And the Galil, a Yuppie luxury.  And the FAL, simply too overpriced for what you get, which is nostalgia.  Pass on all three ).  From here on I’ll be covering the less sexy aspects.  Scope verses iron.  How many rounds.  How many magazines.  And the immediacy of procurement.  Same bat channel.

As I said yesterday, I could be wrong on the general trend of food prices rising.  I just doubt it.  The only reason I throw the caveat in is because between store competition, selling below cost as Loss Leaders, rising interest rates effecting old acquisition loans and corporate desperation over financial markets, there is a LOT of noise out there that could be queering my analysis.  So, let me put it this way.  While prices might not rise as I’m forecasting, what prices probably WON’T do is decrease further.  Prices on White Foods are artificially low.  Buy now.

You know that 3.5 cent rimfire ammunition you just bought?  My guess is that it was at or below cost.  If you wait for it to go down again in price, I would probably call you a damn fool.  You buy it NOW, because life offers few guarantees ( although two are death and taxes and inflation is a tax ).  Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.  Buy on the dip ( NOT on Bitcoin, you sorry specimen of a minion! ).  If Wal-Mart is giving away White Food, striking at Kroger at a vulnerable moment trying to lure away business, BUY!

Remember awhile ago, when I was yelling at you at the top of my lungs to run down to Kroger and buy up cans of shortening ( a bit after I had yelled at you to buy their generic SPAM )?  They were some ridiculously low price like $2.  That was a clearance sale.  What is Kroger oil now?  Something like $4.  Wal-Mart is still at $3.  Selling below cost is as fragile and unsustainable of a trend as that Kroger clearance sale was.  Buy the holy living crap out of honky foods-NOW!

You might have my attitude on a lot of sales.  As in, no big deal.  I don’t need that much and I’m not spending that much extra per year.  If you eat chili once a month, a case sale taking cans from $1.36 down to .99cents might not be a powerful motivator, even if that is a huge savings.  So if sugar is regularly $1.79 and Wally sells it for $1.39, since you don’t use much you fail to be impressed.  If you use two bags a year, you save under a buck stocking up.  This is understandable since you can only overstock so much.

But how much White Food do you really think you’ll stock?  Even if you have a ton of wheat ( literally ), you need a LOT less white flour than that.  You are only using white foods as SUPPLEMENTS, not as substitutions, if you are smart.  You cannot suddenly shift the family to an all whole wheat diet, so you start out with more white than wheat and slowly reverse that.  But we are not just talking about the collapse here.  Most likely there will be a period of extreme decline where you live off of more storage foods, but not exclusively.

A lot of your white foods can be in the regular pantry.  That is where most of my noodles and all of my oatmeal are.  The Mac & Cheese only takes up half of one shelf, since I only store about thirty boxes ( we only eat a few a year ), as one For Instance.  But sugar?  I have totes and plastic bottles everywhere in the basement.  No idea how much, either.  Perhaps 250 pounds?  Maybe more.  I know of one tote with fifty pounds and probably four buckets for another hundred, but I’m unsure how many two liter bottles or old coffee cans.

Hey, what can I say?  I single mindedly stock one item until I stop panicking.  My point is that I probably go overboard and it still doesn’t take all that much in containers or space.  I like the 18 gallon totes.  Wally USED to sell them for $4, then $5, but lately I’ve only seen the affordable ones as 15 gallons.  Don’t use those for 25 bags in storage.  There isn’t enough room for four bags, at 25 pounds each.  With the 18 gallon totes four bags, 100 pounds, fits in nicely.  I don’t have bug issues.

Your mileage might vary, being in a wetter and hotter climate.  Then your storage costs go up.  That is why I stock much more sugar than white flour.  First, I don’t need to mix any with my whole wheat ( just enough to “train” the NOL to eat wheat ) and second, white flour is “poofy”.  Sugar stores far more compactly.  So I need less containers.  I also will be using more sugar than white flour, since I have a LOT of coffee and with my heartburn I need sugar in it.  Plus, it helps in wheat recipes.

As I said, this is condiment food.  All white foods have All Calories, No Nutrition.  Empty calories.  You don’t want to JUST eat them, but rather use them to increase your calorie count with real food.  The example I like to use is that if you cannot find whole wheat locally and must buy it from Wally, it is very expensive ( although not as bad as mail order ).  So you buy white flour to replace a lot of whole wheat.  $1 a pound whole kernel wheat and 27 cent white flour combined 50/50 is more affordable.

White rice is empty calories.  The beans you eat with it are the only nutrition.  The rice are just calories.  Pasta?  Empty calories.  If you aren’t eating all that nasty fresh tomato sauce and zucchini and other slop Lucifer cursed the Wops with, you are in trouble with your diet.  I wouldn’t eat shortening at all, unless forced to under extreme poverty.  That crap works post-apocalypse only because NO fat is less healthy than eating the shortening, and it has a very long shelf life ( do NOT store lard, even though it is hydrogenated.  It barely squeaks out a five year shelf life ).

White Foods should only comprise as much of your diet as you are forced to accept if you cannot get real food.  The Ornamentals get away with it as they eat plenty of fresh veggies.  You got away with eating all that Ramen in college only because of youth, SOME other types of food and perhaps all that yeast in beer J.  But it will probably comprise more of your diet, shortly, as the economy worsens.  You might as well buy it while it is so cheap.
