current collapse?

CURRENT COLLAPSE?
You see it every once in a while, the breathless proclamation that The Collapse Has Already Started.  I have stated the same thing.  The collapse isn’t some far away event you can safely ignore, it is already here.  Yet, nobody elaborates on that statement.  You are left either to panic madly or to just ignore, once again, and return to your hedonistic lifestyle jabbering on your cell phone, drinking extra mega-big size Slurpee’s in your soccer mom SUV and eating Popeye’s chicken by the bucket as a Netflix movie snack.  Damn, I’m hungry now, and it is only five in the morning.
*
The thing is, all our lives we have heard that The End Is Nigh.  One almost has to think that this was deliberately encouraged on the part of the social engineers ( who, after all, have plenty of extra money from their global drug running or their printing press ).  Like conspiracy theories, over saturated to completely eliminate their validity ( to the point no one wants to see the complete impossibility of the third tower being anything but rigged to pancake), constantly chanting the mantra of Collapse has made the charge largely impotent.
*
No, that isn’t Ebonics for “important”.  And, aside from the easy cop-out of “the powers that be did it”, it could be as simple as most people confusing Decline with Collapse.  Or, worse, using them interchangeably.  We have been in a decline, resources running out as population explodes.  I won’t talk much about resources, except in the context of economics.  Economics can influence resources and resources determine economics.  So what determines the difference between decline and collapse?  Really, nothing, except that when you’ve reached the state of collapse, you cannot decline any further.  Perhaps that accounts for the confusion.
*
We’ve been in decline headed towards collapse, but we use “collapse” as a Really, Really Super Bad Part Of The Decline.  Yes, it is semantics.  Some might even disagree with me on the definitions.  Which is fine-tomato, tomahtoe.  I’ve even used different definitions.   Regardless, indiscriminately using the word collapse for the entire roller coaster of imperial and energy decline has ruined the meaning for most of us.  Am I mangling the meaning again, by declaring “we are already in the collapse”?  Of course I am.  One might be excused for expecting more from someone who caresses words for a living.
*
What I mean, but am not adequately saying, is that the edge of the waterfall is in sight.  The imagery of the decline has included Greer’s stairsteps.  I disagree with this on many levels, including the impossibility of feeding seven billion people on declining petroleum.  But being a Druid Dude, his lens might be too nature orientated and to him a collapse really means an ecological collapse.  Probably the most infamous image of collapse is Hubbert’s bell curve.  Which later morphed into “the bumpy plateau”.  Myself, I’ve always preferred the Waterfall Collapse.  Very slow downhill journey until a sudden plunging fall.
*
But we still circle around to WHY I think the collapse is right in front of us.  Why?  Prophets of doom have been wrong so many times Greer uses that as an excuse we will never Fast Collapse.  You know, because, sure, a religious dude screwing up the day of rapture invalidates the possibility that Yellowstone will blow, an asteroid hits or those raghead sheep molesting Muzzies in Pakistan start the process towards global thermonuclear war ( I’m not sure who to cheer for.  Dudes who refuse to eat steak or dudes who refuse to eat Communion wafers ).
*
Sorry, it is just the Druids day for mocking and discontent.  I’ve favored Rawles far too many times lately.  Again, why collapse now?  We can all feel it.  Something major is amiss.  Just like in 2007.  We had no idea what was in store for us, but we felt a disturbance in the fabric of the universe.  And why did we?  Because economics.  We knew something was seriously screwed up.  I can’t remember the order of events, so I won’t list all the unease with events such as mortgage company failings and etcetera-we just knew it was past time for badness.
*
What is different this time?  Not a whole lot, because nothing got fixed in the last ten years and every time something was amiss it once more set off our panic button.  Suddenly gold surges or suddenly there is the LIBOR scandal, or the Chicago Exchange scandal, or England refuses to give Venezuela the gold it owns.  Whatever.  It never stopped for ten years.  Eight years ago Portugal almost went bankrupt, this week there is a border hot engagement between the Paki’s and Indians.  Everything and nothing seemed to be the moment of impending collapse.
*
How can a brother figure all this crap out?  It is a jet fighter spewing chaff all over the radar screen.  They do NOT want us to panic, early or otherwise.  Distractions are endemic.  The Kabuki Theatre is playing both matinee’s AND midnight showings.  Basic institutions have been failing, massively, this entire century.  Why is this year different?  There isn’t one indicator we can point to.  The Baltic Dry Goods Index, King Copper, oil production, GDP, indebtedness.  All have been up and down for over ten years.  Dammit, man, if you are a doctor and not a surgeon, tell me the disease!
*
For me, and perhaps it is just me, once again ( and I’ve written on this before ) I’m at the point I’ve never felt such unease as I am now.  That “disturbance in the Force”.  Damn, why did Disney have to gay up such a great movie ( easy, Lucas did it first and showed the path.  Can you say, Jar-Jar? )?  I’ll elaborate because I think it is important.  Back in 2005, I knew I had to get the hell out of Carson City.  Somewhere, anywhere.  We were rapidly moving towards the Florida Experience, where rent was getting too high to survive.
*
I bought a bunch of land in different places.  We tried to move once, but the land was simply too far from town for a bike commute daily ( once a week would be fine ).  I was temporarily defeated and moved back to Carson.  Financially it just got worse, and then the last year before we moved permanently, the unease over the economy in general intensified.  I had five more years of child support, and the ex was a vicious whore who made a honey badger look mellow.  A job was tied to me NOT being in jail.
*
That was a time of real unease, obviously.  But it was also easily remedied.  Moving to my own junk land and living like a bare assed savage so I could put every possible penny in prep supplies as quickly as possible helped sooth my panic.  In other words, there was no solution but at least I could lessen the impact of a dangerous situation.  This time?  I’m at a complete loss as to what I could possibly do, and my unease this time also comes from economic vulnerability.
*
I know you all look at me and savage jealousy pieces your hearts.  Look at that perfect hair, at his age!  Look at him, self-employed.  Well, every coin has two sides and while I love my freedom from stupid ass moron bosses, working for yourself also means you have to worry about customers.  Working some monkey spanking job, if they close the doors there is always another job even a Mexican won’t do.  Your own business, if that goes under most times you can’t just replace that.  I know, I know, diversify.  The point is, I think there is a higher risk/stress factor.
*
So, previous to the 2008 crash, I was stressed about being unemployed when child support was due.  I know I’m funny that way, not wanting to experience prison sex.  Now I’m stressed about being unemployed, perhaps forever.  Both situations were NOT helpless, as I took precautions in both cases.  It was just that the stress factor climbed high enough that I think my Lizard Brain was particularly motivated and attuned to danger.  That is what the Lizard Brain does.  It collects all data your conscious mind skims over or ignores or forgets, then tabulates the danger you are in.
*
It isn’t woo-woo crap, mystical crystal gazing crap, feeling the power of the universe crap or any other crappy crap.  It is a biological computer built in to save you from yourself and it works really good.  One part of your brain can worry about social danger and the other about actual danger.  That “hair on the back of your neck standing up” or “that feeling in my gut”, or the “something just told me” feeling, that is your lizard brain alerting you to the possibility of real danger.  It is just calling for a moment of alertness.
*
I wasn’t feeling this kind of unease two years ago when I started working for myself.  I had just spent a year saving almost all my take home pay, so there was that security net, but we all know how fast money can go.  I think that all the subtle clues I would lately subconsciously put together as a danger puzzle simply were not there then.  This is the lizard brain warning, not just everyday worry or stress or psychosis.  You may not know the difference but your lizard brain does.  And I think he is squealing in fright right now.  Continued tomorrow.

  1. Correct. I have stopped bothering to confer about the impending dangers and scenarios with others at all as none others possess or know how to be attuned to the lizard brain reflexive behaviors and thinking. I am very much seeing and experiencing THE DECLINE AND COLLAPSE in progress, as a member minionite with 50+ years of life experiences as a reference measurement tool. Even a short bus special ed inbred dolt can sense a pending rain storm coming by half assed using remaining functional animal senses to detect change and take protective measures from instinctive and learned experiences. Jeez, a dumpster fire outside their residence, or fresh graffitti painted large, spelling it out in good grammar would still not budge folks out of complacency napping. Keep at it anyway Jim. (It's all for the Minions, that matters)

Not that it really matters. As you say, if a burning dumpster fire doesn't wake them up, nothing will. We either have The Faith, or we don't. Wheat? Ammo?

  2. “So what determines the difference between decline and collapse?”

That’s easy. In the decline, when you go to the supermarket, the shelves are empty.

In the collapse, on your way to fuel up the car, you have to wear a chastity belt, and fight off Wez and the golden boy, by shooting Wez in the arm with a crossbow bolt :D

  3. We’ve been playing Russian roulette for quite a while now with major economic depression. Kind of like the chances of a European war from 1900 to 1914. Look at the series of marginal leaders we’ve had, and again the same problem before WWI: low skill level for managing big national issues. Optimistic people stink at considering the low probability every day of a really bad event. Sooner or later that day comes. The collapse will only be understood after the fact, when you can see the forces that unfolded over many decades. I just strive to not be in the eye of the storm.

    2. I'm appalled at the quality of leadership throughout the world. Government & private sector.

Something wicked comes this way and as Nikola Tesla said "You may live to see man-made horrors beyond your comprehension.". Just like in WWI, nobody foresaw the horrors of first world nation states going to war with industrial revolution production and modern weaponry. To go from 20 pound artillery to being surprised at being on the receiving end of 2,000 pound shells (and that's on day 2 or 3).

I came across the concept of the Great Filter. My understanding of the theory is that alien civilisations basically wipe themselves out because they build stuff that destroys them. Like our nukes. Idiots provided them to Pakistan and India. Not that those two nations are the only idiot nations. How many times did the Soviet Union *nearly* launch against the US? More than a couple. Now we have Western Powers falling to, hold on, I have to surpress a laugh, Western Powers are falling to UNARMED 3rd worlders who, if they gain the reigns of power control Nukes.

  4. Question for you orienteering types. Total newbie here, but wanting to get a compass to practice with. It’s my understanding that most topo maps today are printed in the 1:24000 scale, but I’ve noticed that quite a few baseplate (The clear kind that you place on a map) compasses do not come with this scale printed on the edges.

    Here’s my question:

If I get a compass that does not have 1:24000 scale, will it still be fairly easy to use a map that is printed in this scale?

I’d prefer not to spend a lot of money up front, so I’m thinking of getting the compass linked below, to start.

    1. Couple ideas. Learn how to do scale conversions. It's not hard once you get your head around the basic concept.

Then, if you can download topo maps you can scale them up or down as needed. Take the file to the UPS store and they can print out large format documents in the scale you want.

Also, take a look at pocket sized "architects and mechanical engineers scales" for real time scaling and conversion on the spot. Course, they have a small learning curve too.

Regarding that compass. It is made for reading maps only, not for orienteering. Get the one with the hinge and site wire. Look up online orienteering instruction for reference. You need a compass you can hold in your hand and sight through to get to your next point in the journey that you have outlined on your map.

I can thank the army for my basic understanding of how this stuff works.

      Delete
    2. Exactly , just go get an old school surplus military engineers compass which is made for orienteering. They are accurate enough used in conjunction with decent topo maps.
I've used the same one from when doing LRRP missions forty some years ago and still is reliable.
In fact get two of them. My wife and I each have one in our expedition packs we use while hunting.

She and I both love to spot and staulk bow hunt. We each have the same topo map and will circle around meeting at a predetermined point. Good practice for finding your way around a map in the woods.
Only had to find her lost ass once about ten years ago. After that episode she learned how to use her hand held Garmin better to secure base points and plot. With practice you can duplicate GPS accuracy ( somewhat) using only the compass and set of beads.

    3. Thanks GS. I’ve been watching a lot of videos, and many are suggesting that the mirror compass (That’s the one with the sighting wire) is not necessary under most conditions. You can still aim a baseplate compass with reasonable accuracy. But apparently, the only advantage that the wire sighting compass offers is for areas with wide open spaces, and few, or distant land marks. I am also thinking about getting one of the wire sighting compasses as well however.

      Delete
    4. Sorry. It appears that I’ve confused the mirror compass, which has a sighting hole, with the wire sighting or lensatic compass. I’ve looked at the lensatic compasses before, and it’s my understanding that they are somewhat complicated, and unnecessary for civilian use.

    "The end is nigh!"

Good grief. In the 1870s, Wilhelm Marr snibbled about the destruction of the Germanic tribes because of infiltration by the semites. He identified the semites as 'lustful and deceitful and and and selfish, too!'.

Worsely, Marr went around telling everybody the semites are 'liberals!'. I think we can all agree this's == liberals == a lot of worsely.

Well. If that's the case, I want nothing to do with them. I might, as Marr saw Germans a century-and-a-half ago, get 'judaized'. Time for a shower.

  6. Posted this earlier as one but it hasn't shown so I'll break it into two.

    I

    "...worry about customers."

That part never goes away. The very first merchant on this planet worried about customers and so will the last. Don't dwell on it being a downer, rather, use it as a source of inspiration. Constantly try to come up with new and fresh ideas on how to attract more customers.

You're always going to lose customers and mostly because of reasons you can't control. Death for example. When a customer dies, is that you're fault? Of course not, but that reason doesn't help your wallet. There are many reasons for losing customers. So you shouldn't let that part even enter the lexicon - you can't do anything about it. Only think about attracting more and new customers. Always. Every waking minute. Think of how to improve your product line in all ways.

Remember the article you wrote, about 2 or 3 days ago, where I commended you on it? That article cause ME to think about your business model. I've been thinking of my own business model for more than 3 decades and the routine is so ingrained now that I even think about YOURS!!! LOL I do my best thinking in my morning shower. No shit. I solve world problems in the shower all the time. A few times I solved them while sleeping. I'll wake up with an amazing solution to a problem on a complex project. It happens.

So I was thinking that you should be collecting these "stellar" articles that I have commended you on, and there have been quite a few in the 2-3 years or so that I have been reading you, and clean them up and collate them into one big article broken into common sense articles. A book. That people will buy. Think big.

Thing is, your writing topics are unique and cannot be found anywhere else without extreme searching and even then they mostly fail. I'm not necessarily talking about the wheat stuff. Or the living in a hole stuff. A chapter can be done on that stuff and let the reader figure out the rest. But the bigger picture, the part that will crack readers up against the head are reasons WHY things are developing the way they are, from a historical reference. I'm only skimming here, because I don't think in the same vein that you do, but maybe you know what I'm saying.

My architecture business has been very successful because I worked for other firms for 14 years and payed attention to what they were doing wrong. When I started by own business I didn't do those wrong things AND I made up all new things to focus on and sell my clients on. See, you can never win by lowering your price, you can only win by upping your quality. Nobody wants cheaper, less expensive maybe, but everybody wants better. Thats the way we are. Ever hear someone say they're gonna go into a store and by the cheapest junk they have? No sane person would do that.

So gather the best you have, and continue to add only your best stuff to it, and create a product that can be marketed to salivating customers. You do that, and you'll find you don't have time for this blog. You'll be too busy counting coins and coming up with ideas for your 2nd book.

Easy stuff is never worthwhile but the hardest stuff always is.
You can do this. If you want to. Think big.

Partly "free" is the only way to gain readers these days. I could always try free on YouTube, and selling books. If I did videos, they would be the still screen with me droning on in the background. I'd just be reading from what I wrote. I don't know. Part of me just wants to hide behind a printed page as I've always down, another part is worried about the old income stream. Part of me doesn't care and just wants to write and ignore the reality of readers :) Always possibilities swirling away in my abused brain.

    4. You just made my point. Your current thinking is, "Nobody buys my books so why bother making more books?"

      Wrong.

You should be asking yourself, "Why aren't people buying my books and what can I do about that?"

There are 2 basic kinds of books out there. Entertainment. Learning. Some authors are clever, like Crichton for example, and can combine the two.

I think of your writing as learning. And therefore reference. Suppose you made a blog post about 18 months ago that intrigued me and now I want to read it again, how can I quickly do that? I can't. No human being is going to waist the time and effort to even try to search back through this blog like that. But, if all of the things you have written throughout the years was gathered into an easily searchable database, online or on paper, I might pay money for that.

What about people that are just now coming aboard to your writings? How are they to get up to speed? Remember, you have a unique perspective and there is a learning curve. How many people happen upon this blog and dismiss it because they don't "get" what you're talking about?

It's easy to get tunnel vision from doing the same thing every day and ideas on what to write next become more difficult. It's also human nature to become complacent with a little bit of financial reward or success. A catalog of your writings could be, for you, what is referred to in the writing industry as, a morgue file. A way to go back over past writings in order to spark new writings or to expand on earlier writings because of new information.

This mental block thing is not new to me and I've had it thousands of times. I also have an enormous morgue file, not just of my own previous building designs but those of others, in an effort to come up with new and fresh ideas.

You could think of it as a tool to help you out in the future AND it could be of interest to others.

Just a thought....and I'll not mention it again.

But I sure would like to read past writings, easily, again.

      Delete
    5. I appreciate the help. I had tried to do a version of your Morgue File, at one time. I went back seven years and started re-reading each day hoping to expand or renew ideas. After several months in, I gave up on it. I think my mind is wired differently. I think I mentioned before I don't do regular research in an organized way but rather allow the stew subconsciously to peculate new connections. If I force the process I get nothing-it needs to be organic. But I hear what you are saying about condensing ideas to a readable and accessible level, etc. I always just looked at the blog as a throw away daily newspaper type of thing. I was never one to clip articles. I thought the books would be the reference material. Okay, lots to think on. Again, thanks.

    6. Considering the sinister direction that Amazon is taking with regards to book bannings, if you had wanted to sell books, you’d want to look towards a different platform to peddle your product. We already know where youtube stands, so that’s not an option that I would consider if I were you (You would be demonetized 5 minutes into your 1st video).

As you’ve mentioned, you’re probably better off concentrating on your blog, as your style would not appeal to the greater masses, and is limited to a niche audience. This is not meant as a put down, it’s just that the majority of society are not independent thinkers, and think along rigid party lines. The far left ideologues will not frequent this blog, nor will the neo-conservative, fox news watching right. Sadly, any appeal outside of these two groups, would be very limited.

You might try increasing your ads (Yes, I know that’s not much help. But I can’t think of anything else at the moment).

    7. Use notecards, one notecard per post.

Then see what subjects you've covered, and which ones you think are best. Then you can arrange the notecards and see if you've got missing spots, and edit 'em all for flow.

That's my theory, at least. Pick the very best, the gems, on a particular theme for this. You can sort out practical advice from big picture from just fun.

Intensely curious, I searched for their networth. According to the WorldWideWeb, the fellow is worth:

With her bikini endorsements, Elayna might be worth more. All from a few years of galavanting around the ocean while having a grand time, and showing us all about it on YouTube.

    3. I'd imagine that the western blocks nukes are inoperative. Russian and Chinese I would imagine are up to date and working wonderfully. When NORK tests its nukes and we run a computer simulation, you have to even wonder if we are a actual nuclear power any more. Oh, sure, we have nukes! And gold in Ft Knox!

    Nice turn of phrase.
    Keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks, I will. Think of me as the written version of the Titanic band. I'll still be publishing as the ship goes under. Of course, some days will be good-er than others

  11. I'm with GS on this one Lord Bison. I've bought many of your books on Amazon and read you here more-or-less daily, but I would love (and gladly pay for) a collection of your "greatest hits". You sell yourself short a lot, and I think you're more talented and insightful than you give yourself credit for. You should give this some serious consideration.

    1. No matter how much I joke, I am actually a rather humble fellow. I don't process praise well ( and I try to let criticism effect me less, but I'm sure I'm less successful than I think ). I guess that is good. Who wants another insufferably arrogant prick hanging around the place? Believe me, I'm considering. The problem isn't lack of confidence. It is lack of interest in editorial tasks. Just as working at a day job robbed me of some focus on my creativity, editing does also. It takes different frames of mind, editing and creative writing. Hell, I haven't even gotten together the last book on semi's. And that is just copy and paste. I'd much rather spend an extra 30 minutes that day adding to already too long article than put together another book collection. But, no, I don't disregard the need for such things. I only am trying to minimize the necessary admin work. Even with the new computer screens, my brain does get fuzzy staring at them for too many hours a day. I also know I need to keep working at forcing myself to do more non-writing work. Like exercise or eating properly, which I-usually-won't allow myself to slack on too much. You have given me the idea of at least at a minimum re-doing the top ten all time articles as booklets.

    2. What about the nol helping to put it together?

    3. NOL grew up in a French speaking family ( in Maine ). English is her second language. She doesn't care for that type of work as she can be self-conscious about vocabulary and such.

    4. I did not know that. I too have French Ancestry. I remember that my great grandmother had a French accent. I had always assumed that she was born in France, but my father informed me that she was born in Baton Rouge.

Even though western Europe is rather liberalized these days, it seems to me that European women are friendlier and less bitchy than their American counterparts. Your NOL being from an older generation, I’m sure helps. We have the worst of both worlds in the US: Feminism on steroids, and really entitled, and bitchy women, that will never be happy. Worst yet, a society of mangina’s that enable it, and help to feed it.

I can remember (And it didn’t seem that long ago) when German men were still real men, and wouldn’t tolerate any feminist BS. It seems like overnight that rabid, US style feminism, infected the other western nations, and changed them overnight, for the absolute worst.

    5. Hell, EVERYONE changed after the 80's. I was there, and I understand it as little as I do the Hippie Era when I was still crapping my diapers. Makes me wonder if I understand a damn thing happening today. And yes, I recommend older gals. One, they can't run away quickly. Two, they are old school. This is my first relationship I'm a partner rather than a peon. Of course, they do tend to die off quicker...:D
