wheat "only" 3 of 3

WHEAT “ONLY” 3

*
There is an article Saturday, but don't get too worked up as it is a book review and we all know how unexcited you all are usually with those.
*
The movie "Temors 5" is out both at Redbox and Netflix.  Reviews at Amazon mostly claim it better than the other sequels.
*
You have your calories, five years worth for $500, plus container cost, would be my recommended minimum because in the great scheme of things two weeks wages are no big deal now but several years of base calories will be very important later.  You have your fat, as many containers as you can afford to buy and have places to store ( replace every five years.  I would think a dollar every two weeks set aside would do nicely to replenish ).  Now you need your protein.  Beans are no longer cheap, at a buck a pound and all the fault of those pricks from California that let every swinging dingus that wished move into areas competing with agriculture irrigation so when things got a little dry we no longer had cheap produce.  Which means that all you can afford is about a quarter pound a day to supplement your grain ( the combo legume and grain advocated by Diet For A Small Planet ) for a complete amino acid delivery system.  Not that this will satisfy your meat graving.  It will not.  Some anthropologists claim that one of the primary drivers behind the extreme violence in the Amazon by those Yamo-whatever tribe dudes stems from the lack of meat in their diet due to environmental conditions, leading to territorial conflict ( of course, that might be false, as others claim it is more about lack of females, due to the self reinforcing feedback loop of selecting males for military dominance.  But even if the meat craving theory is false, we all know how our body desires it, on par with sex and salt ).

*

I would recommend stockpiling Spam.  Just like shortening, it is fake food bordering on licking the sweaty testicles of your boss in taste and of a suspected origin ( vat meat?  ).  But the generic can is $1.29 at Kroger and you can’t beat that deal with a sharp stick.  Get as much beans as you can, then start supplementing with generic Spam ( beans have twice the calories by weight.  Perhaps three times the calories price wise.  They won’t satisfy your meat craving even if they give the body the bare amino acid it needs, but CALORIES COME FIRST ).  You are already covered for vitamins, as I recently wrote about ( $35 gives you five years of a multi-vitamin if taken every other day, supplemented daily with wheat sprouts for the unknown but needed vitamins but more importantly the needed fresh food enzymes ).  Wheat for a calories base.  Shortening for fat.  Beans and a limited amount of Spam for protein.  Wheat for fresh veggies and vitamin pills for any missing nutrients ( I assume you have iodized salt.  The water softener salt, sodium chloride [NOT potassium chloride], is your bulk salt which is not iodized.  That will cure your meat and provide trade salt, but have a large stash of iodized salt to keep you healthy, especially if you lack access to salt water fish ).

*

Wheat, a pound a day for five years ( 400 pounds per year to give you some for sprouts ) $500.  Twenty-five cans of shortening, about $100.  Beans, a quarter pound a day for five years, $500.  One hundred cans of Spam, a paltry amount only giving you one can a week for two years, should be no more than $150.  And with the vitamins, round it out to $1300.  I would imagine about $400 for containers, if that.  $2k is what most of you spend on your semi-auto fetish after magazines.  So is several hundred less than that too much to ask for five years of a complete diet of 1900+ calories a day?

wheat "only" 2 of 3

WHEAT ONLY 2

As I was saying before I interrupted myself both because I just got done working a Monday and I was tired and only had so much energy left with to write, and because I have to stretch out every idea as long as possible least I face a complete and utter vacuum of ideas and vapor lock up, you need calories AND nutrients, but without the former the later won’t help all that much ( the much hyped fad from the Seventies/early Eighties about mega-vitamins with a deficit of calories-the argument being that the less food the body had to convert to fuel the less wear would occur- can only work in a Petroleum Age excess of energy for climate control and a life of leisure ).  You place a premium on calories, but you don’t want empty calories ( which is one reason, besides taste, that I advise against a rice survival stockpile-rice is a worthless storage grain without a heavy fresh vegetable intake.  It is the same as white flour ).  Which, I might add, you really should be wary of when it comes to some commercial survival diet packages.  The more processed the food, the less nutritious it is going to be.  I would pick wheat kernels over textured vegetable protein any day ( or, for that matter, after the first week anyway, over MRE’s ).  Wheat might not have a complete amino acid protein, or fat, but it kicks ass in most other categories ( including fresh veggies, if you sprout some ).  For a calorie source, in other words, it is pretty nutritious.  Not completely, but an all-freeze dried/MRE diet is deficient in enzymes, fiber, a lot of vitamins and probably taste.  No one food is perfect.

*

I think now is a good time to introduce my second easy to remember, incredibly wise nugget:

IT ISN’T ABOUT ELIMINATING NUTRITIONAL DEFICITS BUT ABOUT MINIMIZING THEM.

Once you have your calorie source, THEN you add on to the wheat only diet.  Remember, wheat is about affordably providing calories, in the least nutrient deficient manner.  Now you need to go up the priority ladder.  I would next add fat.  Not protein.  You will be needing fat for keeping alive in winter, and you won’t need all that much to do the job.  As a container of shortening is still only around $4, it would be criminal to not stock up with several years of fat ( I am not sure how much you need to do the job.  I felt comfortable after I had about 30 containers, but I don‘t know if that will last two years or seven ).  Shortening is a vile, wretched concoction following better living through chemistry, one molecule away from plastic, but it is fat and fat you must have and after the Apocalypse is NOT the time to be worrying about the best kind of fat to eat, but simply whether you have enough of any fat to eat.  Fat is fuel for cold weather ( and you need some, even in Southern Cali or The South, just not buckets of the stuff like the Eskimos need ).  I am NOT discounting the need for protein.  You WILL feel the Siren call of dead animal flesh while eating off your storage wheat.  But we are prioritizing for your stockpile on a budget.  More next article.

wheat "only" 1 of 3

WHEAT “ONLY”

I find myself defending my views far too often, which might seem like a pain in the ass but really is good filler on a slow prepper news day ( until we are actually seeing rioting in the streets, perhaps even “mad coupling on the sidewalk as in the movie Miracle Mile as the citizenry becomes aware the nukes are about to hit”, every day is a slow collapse news day because all the old Panic Now indicators have already happened and only divine intervention seems to keep the ass from falling out of civilization-nothing short of the first two actions seems to stir us ).  I’ve seemingly covered all there is to cover for Trailer Trash Irregulars, and so while I attempt to keep it fresh, a lot of it is rinse and repeat instructions.  It helps me with the writing, it helps the new schmucks who are as yet unaware they shall soon be running away from this blog with unseemly haste, and it helps the regular minions as a gentle reminder why I am always right and the rest of the population on this planet are both unblessed by Baby Jesus and always struggling to have as nice of hair as I do.  Whenever I push wheat above all else for a cheap near ideal food storage, I know what a lot of you are thinking.  “Taste fatigue” and “I’m going to die a horrible elongated death from malnutrition from ONLY eating wheat“.  Of course, you are assuming I am full of crap, which is really just an excuse to ignore me so you can ignore all my pearls of wisdom such as NOT buying a semi-auto carbine.

*

Just to spite me, so you can have an AK-47, live in the suburbs and still own a car and trophy wife, you ignore my screeching about buying wheat now, or better yet yesterday, and buying the crap out of it because the low, low prices from America’s heartland are going to end about like they did for rimfire ammunition ( which I’ve been hollering about for over three years or so and everyone is running out of excuses and one day will be forced into admitting I was right about copper depletion [ then, I’ll still be fighting everyone to acknowledge silver depletion, etc. ]).  So, let me once again sum up my wheat stash strategy by given you an easy to remember nugget:

*

WITHOUT CALORIES YOU DIE.  WITHOUT NUTRIANTS YOU DIE SLOWER.

*

Easy enough, yes?  First and foremost above anything else, you need calories.  Calorie deficit plus nutrient loss is relatively quick death by disease as your body can’t fight bugs, heat itself or run itself.  Nutrient loss alone, without calorie loss, kills you a lot slower.  Look at how long Americans last on extra calories containing zero nutrients.  LOOOOOOK!!!!  Now, you can’t just suckle at the sweet teet, eating nothing but candy bars and soda and expect to live to eighty.  When I speak of zero nutrients I speak of relative loss.  Vegetables grown in denuded soil have some nutrients, if only a few percent of those grown in much healthier soil.  It is still better for you than sipping from a can of corn syrup.

the possibility of probability 2 of 2

THE POSSIBILITY OF A PROBABILITY 2

What got my little pea brain churning on this subject was the argument “you won’t survive that many firefights to need that much ammunition”.  In other words, you might think you need ten thousand rounds of ammunition but if each bout of conflict uses two hundred rounds, what makes you think you will be victorious through fifty battles?  Chuck Norris or a Ninja Turtle you ain’t.  A valid point, even if it presupposes standard modern combat using assault weapon tactics.  So, in this case you are acknowledging the probability of the odds against you in combat and making logistical assumptions based on that reality.  Which, as we all know, is how actual logical thinking and decision making is done, even if most of us try to avoid doing it.  Unfortunately, this completely ignores a very real problem.  The Fickle Finger Of Fate.  That Syphilitic Whore  Lady Luck.  When The Fates conspire against you, when The Gods disfavor you, all the mathematical certainty you used to be able to count on goes running away, jumping out the window and saying Sayonara Bitch!  When that second Five Hundred Year Storm hits you three years after the first one, that is simply Bad Luck.  When The Perfect Storm brews, that is Ill Boding, especially when the convergent parts are in themselves supposed to never happen.  Going back to the 1990’s with some of the first Derivatives failures ( if I’m not mistaken, Orange County was the first, although I’ve heard rumors the late 80’s market crash might have been the embryonic case ), when those idiots went tits up when Russia defaulted on its bonds, the Nobel Prize winners had calculated the odds of what befell them to be trillions to one-i.e. impossible.  First, we should have know way before the White House Negro got his that they pass these things out like bubble gum comics , and second, pointy egg professors are not very good about discounting probability.

*

What over-educated idiots suffer from ( and, yes, that includes you if you are informally very educated in your field of interest ) is too much learning, especially specialized learning.  Once they know everything there is to know on a subject, they become biased in their own favor, believing they are as technological gods.  They think they know how something works, and are hence privy to knowing how it shall perform.  Luck?  They are oblivious.  They didn’t need luck, but hard work and brains ( ignoring the fact they were lucky to be born to parents enriched in the global imperial headquarters ).  Bad luck?  Pish, posh!  They were smart and educated, and bad luck steered clear of such Beautiful People.  But ask any High School drop out who finished Hard Knocks School for his diploma.  Sometimes, you just have crappy luck, when improbably things turn against you.  I have ten thousand rounds for my bolt action rifles, if I can reload my brass the maximum times, and I don’t expect to use but a few dozen to a few hundred of them.  Then I’m killed or injured fatally.  Why do I stockpile so many?  Because, as my luck might have it, despite the love of Baby Jesus, I might need them all.  If I have the bad luck of surviving the die-off, despite the odds and the probabilities, I need to be prepared.  Which is the same reason I have years and years of food.  Not because I expect to live that long, but in case I do.  Don’t fall for probability hype.  The possible can always bite you in the ass.

the possibility of probability 1 of 2

THE POSSIBILITY OF A PROBABILITY

As we all know, just because something is possible does not mean it is very probable.  We all read Lucifer’s Hammer and thought it great fun to visualize an asteroid making Earth its bitch.  Of course, we all realized the probability of that happening was really quite low and so the danger was not something we had to worry about.  An asteroid impact was kind of the zombie apocalypse of the Seventies.  Just with better writers ( actually, they are getting a LOT better.  Check out Joshua Guess and “The Fall”.  Not only a talented author, a story that isn’t boring or repetitious ).  Now in modern times, way after the hip and grooving disco era, it might added that I for one, after the recent Russian strike, place a lot more credibility in the idea of an asteroid hitting us.  I think the possibility is as real as ever and the probability is far greater than we have been led to believe ( if I’m remembering correctly, our space agency spending billions had no idea the above mentioned space rock was going to hit.  That, or they knew and were told to tell no one because it was initially believed it was going to be a lot bigger, perhaps on the dinosaur killer level.  So, NASA was either a bunch of incompetents, a bunch of liars or a bunch of civil servants suckling at the taxpayer teet and not even paying attention ).  I mean, I have a very personal problem with ANY official statistic.  I believe them to be at the Mark Twain level of damn lies.

*

You want a laugh?  Watch any episode of NatGeo’s Doomsday Preppers.  Any issue a prepper might be getting ready for, the narrator is quick to point out how silly it is by pronouncing that all is well and “proves” it with statistics showing how improbable the event actually transpiring is.  Like, “oh, no worries, Peak Oil won’t hit until 2030, all experts agree”.  I imagine if I paid an expert to consult for me, by carefully leading them in the direction I desired, I could get those rosy predictions also.  I’m not saying that National Geographic TV producers are a bunch of weasel pukes, suckling up to the government and its handlers.  Why would I?  Headquartered in Washington DC doesn’t always mean you are contaminated by association.  All I’m saying is that I can’t think of a more optimistic bunch, and hence they should have no business portraying preppers.  But back to probabilities.  Doomsday Preppers lowballs all disaster probabilities and purposely picks preppers with a propensity towards possibilities.  Again, lies by statistics.  Sure, it is stupid to think a magnetic pole switch is going to happen.  Probably right up there with the Mayan 2012 scare.  But picking your prepper poison is a minor thought crime.  I don’t think it is stupid at all to prepare for the possible rather than the probable.  As long as you are not single cause specific, and let your preps generalize to a certain degree.  Even if you do focus on one event ( which we all do, whether you realize it not ), as long as you have bleed over to other events you should do fine.  Tomorrow, let’s talk about prepping for the possible.

tent or van?

TENT OR VAN?

Let’s face it, most of you are reading along every day, praising Baby Jesus himself for gracing you with my presence, nodding along at all the wisdom I disseminate, and then doing very little about it.  The wife watching your prepping like a hawk, hyperaware of any possible deviation.  You would love to leave your job but are seven to ten years away from retirement and as much as it blows to suck the corn out of your bosses ass, doing the shucking and jiving po’ ol’ negro routine, since I ain’t giving you a money back guarantee on my Collapse Imminent prediction you are going to do the safe thing and keep your present employment.  You have kids living nearby and while the ingrate Spawn Of The Milkman only ever want money from you it is still nice to be around them on a regular basis.  In short, you have just decided to roll the dice on the collapse timing.  Hey, I don’t judge- I did the exact same thing myself for a few years.  I mean, I have Baby Jesus on my side so I kind of had an unfair advantage, but I understand.  So, you make do with where you are now and one of your considerations is bugging out since your suburban home is a sauna in the summer and an icebox in the winter, once the electricity goes out.  I don’t know if that is the best choice, but I don’t know your circumstances.  You might be right downwind from a nuke plant or next door to a super maximum prison.  As we were just talking about vans being metal tents, after I did an article on Apocalypse Camping, I got to thinking on the issue.

*

Vans are indeed a wonderful improvement over a fabric tent.  They keep out predators, they are mobile and more likely than not they are already being used as transportation to work so it is “free” in one regard.  When I was living in Oklahoma renting a mobile home lot I felt safe and secure with my old  $500 Chevy truck with shell and a gym membership.  I had a place to live and bath if I was ever unemployed.  Another great thing with vans is that since the full size V-8 types were gas pigs you can usually buy them dirt cheap.  Even ones with shot engines that you can drop the engine and tow behind another car as a small RV living space.  If you don’t drive it but once a week to the store, it can be a driveway storage shed.  Of course, they also come with their own issues.  They are expensive compared to tents, if you don’t already own one.  They are expensive on a monthly basis with insurance and tags.  They are limited to the road.  And most importantly, you can’t count on the past in our future.  Imported oil can always stop.  TSA can always close down any road.

*

Yet despite that, I’d still advocate a van.  I wouldn’t sleep at night knowing a set of claws or a small Wal-Mart $1 folding knife can remove the tent wall barrier.  A tent keeps out some rain and keeps in heat when you don’t need it.  It is barely more than a room to escape most insects and change in privacy.  Yes, I’m a bit prejudiced, disliking the things from my military days.  But they offer little if anything as shelter.  They are psychological more than anything else.  The van has its issues ( I wouldn’t recommend a passenger car which is much sadder and pathetic as shelter ) but it is also somewhat camouflage.  Everyone is used to seeing cars.  Hikers, not so much.  You’ll just need to plan your early escape prior to road closures and gas shortages more intelligently.  If you can’t go with a van, don’t rely on a tent.  Construct primitive shelters with materials on hand, with some plastic sheeting to help with waterproofing.  It is cheaper, blends in, has insulation and can be abandoned immediately and replaced easily.

deflating expectations 3

DEFLATING EXPECTATIONS 3
*
It's that time again, ye loyal minions.  Malthusian Survivalist Newsletter #3 is unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.  October issue: AR verses AK, Stock It Cheap And Deep, Wheat Worthy? Who Is Worth Saving.
Link To MSN #3
*
Now, you could disagree with me on food deflation.  I certainly wouldn’t hold it against you.  You might think up and down swings is simply the regular day to day historical norm as one food is in a glut and another scarce, plus seasonal factors, plus others ( for instance, if “we”- and by we I mean them because most waste is from marketing forces and has nothing to do with customers leaving their asparagus too long in the refrigerator- can cut back on the Waste For Profit Paradigm ).  But no matter.  You buy on the dips and deepen your pantry and stockpile to smooth out and lessen the impact of rising prices.  It isn’t like you can do too much more ( if, and I can’t imagine this is true as this is the Redneck Survivalist Channel, you can actually afford stocks, I’d steer clear of any company processing food ).  And prices will remain as low as possible here in the US because while we are not by any stretch of the imagination a country of surplus resources anymore, our economic system is built up around more consumerism for lowest priced goods.  But what about rent and cars and medical and every friggin thing else?  If oil is going down in price, but nothing else is, what is to be made of our future expectations?  Deflation makes sense as petroleum is cheap, plus demand destruction, yet inflation makes sense as our own eyes clearly see prices of everything else rising ( even gas isn’t down all that much now with oil at $50 compared to when oil was at $80 ).

*

Demand destruction, as fewer and fewer folks can’t just cut back as when wages are lost temporarily but completely are removed from being a consumer of anything other than food-another reason food isn’t cheaper is the monetary inflation from Food Stamp increased rolls, is conflicting with resource depletion.  Neither are temporary forces but the new normal.  But, after a moments reflection, you can bet that demand destruction is going to be the predominant source.  There are a lot of people that can decrease demand, and they have been forced into that for the last seven years, and that continues and is ongoing, which at the same time decreases the pressure on resources.  I think we are seeing that with oil.  Demand has fallen so fast due to economic crashes that all the excess capacity from Fake Oil ( tar sands, fracking oil, ethanol ) from when oil was $100 a barrel is sending prices below production costs as companies struggle with survival.  And oil should have everything else following in price.  Or at least, that is the historical norm.  But now the dwindling Rich class ( the Mega Rich class is dwindling, but at the expense of the mere Rich, as well as all other economic classes.  Consolidation is happening )  is desperately trying to prop up their cash cows, and government bail outs queer prices.  As with automobiles and medical care.  When, and it WILL happen, the economic crash comes to those industries, even the bankers jacking up rent by removing the ownership option, those prices will join the rollercoaster up and down.  When a service can’t be had at any price because a former customer is in the poor house, and the provider is in debt, prices WILL be lowered as necessary.  Even to below costs.  We will see both inflation AND deflation, and you can NOT tell which one or when.
